I'm often passing MEX and see their colorful awning and decor from the street and have been wanting to try it for awhile now and finally did on Cinco de Mayo. For Cinco de Mayo, MEX offered a limited smaller menu than usual that didn't include all their offerings like Sunday brunch and certain varieties of tacos like chorizo. They still had most tacos, quesadillas, salads, fajitas, and desserts. Most restaurants were offering drink and food specials for Cinco de Mayo and I expected some sort of drink special on margaritas for the holiday but was surprised to find that there were no specials and everything was full price.
The major pro and selling point of MEX is the fun and festive decor and atmosphere, with lots of colorful skulls and a giant colorful sugar skull as tall as a person, when you first enter the restaurant. The restaurant is very decorative and atmospheric throughout with crystal chandeliers, colorful papeles picados, salsa wall, hanging lights, colorful painted tin cans to the ceiling, sunny open roof and patio in spring and summer, and a long table for parties where chairs at the end of the table are almost throne-like. Decor is classsy elegance meets traditional Mexican restaurant.
The food was only ok and didn't thrill me, chill me, and fulfill me. Tacos were average and pretty small portions with sparse toppings but the price tag didn't really match. Most tacos are around $14-$15 and you get only two tacos with pretty sparse toppings served with rice and beans. The rice and beans were very tasty and well seasoned though. I had the snapper tacos, which were small and had a small amount of meat and were lightly garnished with pineapple salsa and avocado cream and cost $15. For that price, I would expect a hardier more filling taco loaded with toppings. The tacos were average but really nothing special. You do have the option to mix and match different varieties of tacos and can add a third taco for an additional charge. We also ordered chips and guacamole. The chips were warm and tasty but many chips were kind of chewy and the serving of guacamole was very tiny compared to most competing restaurants. It looked more like a side of guacamole for a taco, not a $10 appetizer to be shared among a few people. I would have thought that salsa was complimentary but that was an additional charge too. Drinks were ok but not phenomenal. They don't have frozen margaritas but had a new limited time menu item, a frose. The frose was good but not amazing. I ordered a Starburst margarita too and I liked it a lot better than the frose. The Starburst margarita had flavors of peach, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon. It was well balanced and the grapefruit wasn't overwhelming. Margaritas and cocktails are $12 a piece but again they aren't anything special. I might have expected a large margarita in a festive glass but they're served in a plastic cup with no garnishing and no sugar or salt rim and honestly I've had equivalent tasting margaritas in a dive bar for a lot cheaper. Service was just ok. Our server was very warm and friendly but seemed very busy and really didn't check back on us much even though the restaurant wasn't very busy since we came for lunch at noon. Our server had a hard time applying a gift card and separating checks and it took three attempts and help from the manager before it was finally done which made us late to our movie. However, the server and manager were very friendly and helpful throughout the lengthy process. Overall, the food isn't anything I'm dreaming about or rushing back for. There was nothing really special about it that stood out. I don't mind paying for a great meal but the price really exceeds the quality and quantity of product here. The real selling point here is the atmosphere which is so cute, festive, and fun. I might dine here like once a year for the atmosphere but if I have a hankering for tacos and margs, Bakersfield or Imperial has better quality food and drinks for the price and still a very nice fun comparable atmosphere. read more
