I booked Mex two months ago for catering an event in June. We communicated a few times as we added people and planned the menu. Four days before the event I get a call from them cancelling our catering order due to being short staffed. While I understand that many businesses are going through staffing issues, this was extremely unprofessional. I could have been informed a few weeks before or even forewarned that they even had an idea they would be short staffed. Instead I was told four days before and was left in a difficult situation for my event. Do not plan to use this business for personal or event needs again. read more

Service was excellent! Portions were decent (as they should be with increased prices). But...please bring back your old fajita recipe! "If it ain't broke don't fix it" as the saying goes. Before MEX closed for their renovation we were obsessed with driving way out of our way for the fajitas. The fajitas were unlike most other restaurants. Third time here- came on a Monday after happy hour was over. Sadly, this didn't meet our previous experience. The chips that came with our guacamole were a bit stale-boo. It is a bummer they charge for the chips in addition to the guacamole. I don't know if it was because they weren't busy, but the food was disappointing. Too bad. This place has a fun and nice decor, but this experience was a let down. This was the second time we've come and it was a great experience overall (first time was also a good experience). We had a party of 8- everything was delicious, the ambience is fun and festive. We don't know why the ratings are so low so we felt we needed to write a review because the service was good & the food was good. Our waiter Josh was helpful in his suggestions of what to eat, and you could tell he wanted to make sure everyone was happy. My dad enjoyed the shrimp and chorizo dish, the fiesta bowl is enough to share between 2 (or 3 people), the tamale dish was good, and the chicken enchilada casserole was huge! The hot salsa isn't very hot but you can add hot sauce to the level you want from the salsa shelf or as recommended by your waiter. We were seated at a bad table near the kitchen and where incoming patrons walk by to enter the open dining area-we did ask to move to a more well lit area. The menu looks nice, but the actual food is not very good nor is it spicy-leans more to the salty, overcooked side-think rubbery shrimp, bland salsa and guacamole. We ordered the churros with Mexican hot chocolate and honey caramel. The hot churros arrived on top of a large bowl of ice cream and a thin drizzle of caramel (seemed odd to serve hot churros on top of ice cream, as there is no mention of this on the menu description). No Mexican hot chocolate in sight. When we asked, the waitress said it was only offered seasonally, despite this being on the menu-I have eaten the churros earlier this year. My girlfriend picked this place and insisted we try it for our girls day out. We started off with chips and 3 different kinds of salsa (pico, Verde, spicy) and guacamole. This was by far the best thing we had. My girlfriend got an original margarita which was just way too tart for me, even with the salted rim. For our entrées I got the Cuban tacos, and my girls they got the crispy cod tacos and a chicken quesadilla. The Cuban tacos were so dang salty I sent them back after taking 2 bites, they were inedible. The cod tacos were good, but nothing special, and the quesadilla was a hot mess. I've been to this restaurant many times before. It used to have a unique flavor, exciting atmosphere, and great service. Tonight was not that way at all. Many of things we ordered were out of stock. The server was pushy, and offered extra food or the next scale of food every time --we declined. When he brought the extra items, he made it seem like it was complementary... BUT CHARGED US. We also ordered a very simple beer (miller lite) and never revived it. The server was accommodating when we brought up the discrepancy, but it was frustrating to know that we had to ask for an edit of the receipt. Some of lines he had clearly rehearsed and made us uncomfortable. The food all was fine, but lacked flavor. However, the margaritas were strong. Visited on a Friday with sister, arrived around 7:45. We were promptly seated in a patio(?) area with these weird zipper plastic windows, and a couple were open and it was pretty cold. It took several minutes for server #1 to come over for a drink order, we both got margaritas. It took about 15 minutes to get the drinks. We also ordered chips and salsa, which weren't complimentary, like at most Mexican restaurants. If them took several minutes for a server to come back, server #2, who delivered our chips, to take our food order. I ordered soyrizo tacos with rice and skinny beans, sister got a chicken nacho. It took about 25-30 minutes and 2 margaritas for the food to arrive, brought by server #3. Sister loved the nacho, said the queso was great. The soyrizo tacos were ok, different. The skinny beans were good, but I didn't feel like anything was great about the experience. There were empty plates and glasses cluttering our small table that could have been cleared by one of our 3 servers. At the end, I wasn't sure who the server I would be tipping was. I ordered the chicken fajitas where the rice was chewy, the beans tasted a lot like cumin, and the quantity & quality of the fajitas were sub par. My dad ordered the tacos where the flavor was also just cumin and pricy for 2 tacos. Would I come here again? No. Would I recommend it to a friend? Only if I hate them secretly. The server was really attentive and nice. Chips,salsa, and guacamole were all good. That will end all of the positives. Now to start the negatives: 1. My glass was dirty and there were floating pieces of who knows what in my water. 2. I ordered the carnitas and the meat was extremely dry. Never have I had such a dry piece of meat in my life. 3. The corn tortillas were soggy and tasted stale. 4. One of the waiters and or owner opened the doors they have in the back which let in cold air and was very cold throughout my meal. I need to start off by saying that this place looks AWESOME! The food was really good we loved the guacamole (super lemony). The fish tacos were superb and the alambre was great too. But the real reason to come is because the decorations are AMAZING! Inside and out you can clearly see that these people know about decor and design! The first time I came in for a lunch and got myself a mex corn, chicken lettuce wrap, kale salad- everything 5 star. Ambience is contemporary and full of life. Staff courteous. Food is top notch. Last few times I came in for a drink. Happy hour is the best 3-6. Bottles beers are 2 usd, drafts 3, cocktails 6, shots 3/6 ( based upon which one you choose). We come here for lunch often and we absolutely love their salads. The portion is great and I struggle to eat all of it at once. Although my colleague, who's a vegetarian, chows down the whole thing very easily. Their cumin salad dressing is amazing and usually the waiters are kind enough to give more than one of the salad dressing. And if you ask them to pack any remaining salad, they pack your favorite salad dressing too. The salad has incredible amount of stuff you can add. Their happy hour had me pleased too. We came here on my birthday and we had a few margaritas and appetizers and they were all good went inexpensive. We will definitely come back for more! read more

I wasn't very impressed. Interesting concept... Mexican-Asian infusion. I can picture the hearty elements of the Mexican cuisine with fresh rustic ingredients combined with an Asian peanut-sauce and fresh Slaw vision. Although, the bright flavors and bold combinations can be imagined... this is where they stopped. Let's start at the beginning: Hostess. When I walked in for lunch, a few small groups had just left, so I figured seating would be open. However, after standing in front of the hostess for a solid 45 seconds, she finally looked up and said, "WHAT?". I asked if she was seating for lunch, and in a huff she grabbed a menu and walked off. I stood still because I didn't know if I was supposed to follow her, or if she was going to go check to see if the tables were cleared... from 30 feet away, she turned and said, "are you coming?". STRIKE 1. This girls should be re-trained or fired. The table I sat at was a tight fit, and they are definitely maximizing space with the tables next to it. I now know all the intricate details of some stranger's child's potty training struggles, and all of her opinions on breastfeeding. Way too close! The waiter was okay, but not very attentive. He seemed very much overwhelmed with his 3 tables he was working on. I guess whatever was going on in the kitchen was MUCH more important than the tables. BTW... tap water in fancy bottles, refrigerated and left on tables is NOT impressive. Stop it! As for the food... I order the fish tacos. Heavy on the cabbage, with a super sweet barbecue-type sauce. The sauce had such an overwhelming taste of burnt garlic, it stayed with me for the next 5 hours... no brushing of the teeth, gum or breath mints were going to save the office after this lunch! Refried beans made from red beans were lacking... the only flavor was the lime thrown on top! I've got to say... it's a beautiful restaurant... w/ a mustache on the front door like a Bat Signal to all hipsters! However... food: meh... service: poor... cost: they are very proud... Summary: Lunch menu had 20 items, plus 50+ alcoholic drinks... this place wants to be a bar. I ordered a nacho pickup over the telephone on one of those snowy days and paid for it over the the'phone. When I arrived the girl told me I needed to pay $2.12 more for the guacamole. Back out in the snow I went to get $2.12 that no one had told me about.i gave her $3.00 she rang it and called for change because there was not any money in that register. She got the change and a guacamole, gave me receipt, guacamole and I left. When I arrived home I had 2 guacamole. Called the manager to report this strange going on and he said he would credit me my $2.12. Since I already had the guacamole and she should not have charged me. I'm still waiting for my credit. On a beautiful August evening, we were on our way to DTE with another couple to see Jim Gaffigan perform, and unfortunately this place caught our eye. Upon entering the establishment, the decor harkened us back to a restaurant experience a year prior that was way below par, but we couldn't put our finger on it...immediately that is. Simply put, the food is just not very good...at all. The chips and salsa, a staple of any decent Mexican eatery, was nearly inedible. The chips were incredibly soggy (with grease) and not crunchy at all. The salsa had little character and seemed heavy on the cilantro, not a good thing for those who are overly sensitive to its soapy flavor. I ordered the Carnitas, which were really, really dry. Now I love Carnitas, and I know you're supposed to cook them for hours and hours, but for goodness sake, quit cooking them before they turn into leather. There went $42 that me and the wife of the other couple will never get back. My wife didn't enjoy anything here, including the Margarita, which, by the way was the thing that ultimately jogged her memory on why this place felt so familiar. She checked with the waitress and sure enough, their other location is at the Great Lakes Crossing Mall, where we had eaten, and greatly regretted doing so, just one year earlier. I'm not saying that some folks might not like this place, the setting and ambience are quite nice, and the food isn't the worst Mexican I've ever had (Oaxaca), but it was a huge letdown for the four of us...twice so for my wife and me. If it weren't for the classy owner/manager, who stopped by to see how we were doing, I'd definitely give this place one star. In the end, it was our fault to eat at a place we didn't like...again. A new edition to the Farmington, Telegraph food scene, which is deeply needed. The food scene in this area is dominated either by chains or the lack of restaurants. It's refreshing to have a unique place for drinks and decent food. The fact that they make an effort with vegetarian options and an knowledgeable staff for these dietary restrictions, they deserve an extra start bringing them to four. Their food will score them three. I found several times when ordering with vegetarian substitutions, the servers asked specifically if we were vegetarian or vegan. This indicated they know the difference, consequently the entrée should include dairy or not. I should further add that they offer a soy based chorizo called soyrizo for a protein substitute. One thing that the server was not knowledgeable about was their sourcing of their meats. She couldn't tell me where the chicken was raised. Start with their in house made chips and guacamole. It's an excellent starter, creamy and delicious guac. I would have to say my least favorite entrée has been the chorizo tacos that comes with refried beans and rice. Even though the tacos are double layered corn tortillas, the oil soaked right through and the tacos fell apart. The beans are very delicious, which I ate them all until they were gone. The rice is another story. I left almost all of it. It just didn't have much flavor. On the other hand, the puffy taco is another way to go. It is delicious, crunchy, and can hold up against the oil. My most frequently ordered dishes are the burrito and nachos. The burrito is huge, which you probably won't finish in one sitting. It's packed with meat, rice, and beans. It is topped with their delicious sauce that has a tiny bit of spiciness to it. The nachos are just huge, wait, massive is what I mean. One order will feed two people, I promise. What's also unique is that is not traditional style chips. They are more like several tostadas severed with all the toppings. Great food, fun atmosphere, and solid drinks. Though I've never tried personally, their cocktails are a crowd favorite, and they have fun names to boot. My first time here was actually for a company gathering, and during that time, I got a chance to sample a pretty wide range of food. Tried the kale salad, fish tacos, fajita bowl, chicken quesadilla, and the two desserts: tres leches cake, and fried ice cream. During that time, I liked everything, but felt the kale salad was a little too heavily dressed for my liking. Since Husband and I have similar taste buds and we had been wanting to try Mex for the longest time together, we returned shortly after my first visit. It was on New Year's Eve, and we were with two other friends who were skeptical with this modern take on Mexican food. Because of that, we didn't come here for dinner, but instead, just had dessert (which I don't have a problem with because they are DELICIOUS). Husband couldn't resist trying their fish taco because I raved about them, so he ordered one and was super happy. Subsequent visits were a mixture of lunch and brunch, and we really enjoyed their brunch. The Huevos Rancheros plate is very beautifully composed with the salsa arbol and beans and cilantro-lime rice. It is a very large portion for one person, and very good. For those who are apprehensive about spice, Mex's food is not spicy at all, but just the right amount of heat to bring out the flavors. We prefer a bolder spice level, so we add on top of it, but the existing sauce mixture is manageable for everybody.. So, after all these repeated visits, here is what i recommend you to get: 1. Chips and salsa (Arbol XX and salsa verde) 2. Guacamole 3. Fish tacos (if you're sensitive to spicy peanuts, ask your server to omit them, but please don't omit the slaw out; it pairs wonderfully with the grilled mahi mahi fish) 4. Huevos Rancheros 5. Tres Leches cake 6. Fried Ice Cream We haven't been here for happy hour, but I am guessing that it is a fun time. They also offer low tops and high tops. We love the high tops, and the covered patio area is nice and roomy. Bottom line - if you're into a more refined and upscale version of Mexican food, you will enjoy Mex. I went to Mex with my boyfriend after visiting an area cider mill. Neither of us are very familiar with the area, so I went on my phone and checked what was nearby. Mexican food sounded good, so we checked out Mex. It was about 7pm on a Friday night, and the place looked pretty busy, so a good sign to start. We were seated quickly at a two-top near the bar, and we noticed the...somewhat strange...taste in decoration. To each their own, but it wasn't exactly our idea of a Mexican restaurant. We glanced through the menu and everything sounded good. Our server (unfortunately I do not remember his name) gave us some good recommendations. We each started off with a beer, and placed our orders. Turns out that chips and salsa are an upcharge here, too. Oh well, we did without. Our food took awhile, which is understandable given the time period that we ordered. When it did come, though, we were fairly underwhelmed with our portion sizes. I received three tamales and the Elote (Mexican street corn) on the side, and my boyfriend ordered chicken enchiladas. My tamales were warm-ish inside but not hot, and the corn was very good, but $15 for the plate was pretty steep. The tamales weren't very large, either. My boyfriend liked his enchiladas and that came with a side of black beans and rice, and also ordered an Elote per our server's recommendation. His portion size was a bit bigger than mine, but still seemed kind of small for the price. One thing that I did notice from our table was the peculiar layout of the kitchen. I did notice a few instances of the chefs in the kitchen taking bowls with blue lids (seriously, it looked like Gladware) out of what I am guessing was a microwave and setting them under a heat lamp. A lot of dishes sat there for quite awhile, which leads me to wonder how often this happens, Gladware or not. Overall, the flavors were fairly good, but not exemplary. Our service was good, but the portions were small, and a nearly $45 bill before tax and tip for two small entrees and two beers seems steep. I have to admit I was rather disappointed by Mex, but I would be willing to give it a shot again sometime in the future. Mex is delicious. Hands down some of the best chorizo tacos around. I'm not sure why most reviews lean negatively, but in my carry out lunch menu only experiences I've had excellent food. The bartenders and hostesses are always very friendly and have offered really yummy suggestions on things I've asked about. The hot salsa is a hit and that's my fav. The Verde is also super flavorful. Tacos are just outstanding. Black bean soup is really great too. Just full of spices and good texture. Maybe it does get a bit more pricey at dinner, but from what I've witnessed it is worth it for the atmosphere. Always see all hands on deck and people busting it to help their tables. This was our first visit to Mex and we will definitely be back many times in the future. The atmosphere is creative casual, with clustered chandeliers, rope accents and flooring that was reclaimed from abandoned houses in Detroit. I learned that fact from the manager, who stopped by our table for the obligatory check-in and ended up staying for a brief conversation. This was representative of the staff as a whole- they were warm & friendly to a fault. The personality carries over into the food. High quality cocktails, an extensive tequila selection, and a menu that's both traditional and modern with lovely presentation. I had chicken enchiladas which were yummy, although had a bit too much sauce- a minor quibble overall. The accompanying cilantro-lime rice actually TASTES like cilantro and lime! I also had the Mexican street corn salad, which was shared with my spouse. It was a very creative (hot sauce vinaigrette!), very yummy dish...although a bit heavy on the slaw sauce. Mex is a really cool place to go and get some drinks with your friends and have a good meal. I love the decor of the place. It's very laid back atmosphere and very friendly. I got the Nacho salad which was an excellent choice. I recommend you share with someone if you are not too hungry because it is a huge portion. The Nacho salad was very tasty and different. I also got a white Sangria which was fantastic! I am a huge fan of Sangria and it was definitely excellent. They have a wall full of different hot sauces which is really cool because you can pick any kind of hot sauce to fit your taste buds! Driving by this place makes you excited to stop! It's a gorgeous, well decorated building. It felt very Alice in Wonderland and I couldn't stop looking around at all of the unique things on the walls and ceilings. The drinks were good - I had a classic margarita and my friend had the one with ghost pepper jam. Both were made with fresh juices which makes all the difference for me. The ghost pepper jam was not too spicy at all - more or less just added an interesting flavor. This food though. YUM. We started with the baked chips and four different salsas. It's nice to have a bit of a healthier choice when it comes to tortilla chips, especially because I usually have no problem eating the entire basket. These were so exception, each salsa was awesome. The hot was my personal favorite. For dinner, we each ordered three tacos (Cuban, mahi, and the Gogi) and a side (Elote & Spaghetti Squash). All were packed with flavors that blew my mind. Like seriously a Cuban sandwich in a taco. SO good. The spaghetti squash may take the cake for most outstanding though. Twice roasted with brown jalapeño butter (I asked). Don't leave without trying it! My only complaint was that my food was a little cold. I'm not sure why, but it didn't seem to impact my experience much, which should say something about the food. A hip colorful place I love their twist on Mexican food by adding a modern flair! From the moment you pull up to the scene it screams "I'm different!" So I was instantly excited about seeing what they had to offer. We arrived during the hour in between brunch and dinner so the kitchen was closed. Deciding to stay we ate chips and salsa until we could have our food prepared. I really wanted to try the Sin-Gin margarita but there was no more cinnamon tequila . So instead I ordered the..... Florita! Which I loved. Started with chips, salsa, and guacamole and they had an "everything guac" and I like to be extra so I order that one! But had them hold the bacon since I don't eat pork! It was cool very different basically slightly smashed avocado with the ingredients on top. Kinda had to mix everything together myself. But I also didn't mind that since it resulted in a super chunky guacamole. For my meal I ordered the veggie quinoa bowl and because I was trying to order something healthy but still not feel too deprived it was perfect. I added soyrizo which was a good decision! My friend who eats meat all the time didn't even know it wasn't real beef! I only wish it was a bit more flavorful..The portion size was enough for two people but this was all mine which I loved for leftovers! read more
