A fantastic little climbing gym. I was only able to take advantage of the bouldering but they had a does section too. The setting was very well done. In fact, I was lucky enough to stop by right after they had a competition so there were both regular and comp climbs up. The community was also very welcoming (as the climbing community should be) with people encouraging and supporting each other. It's located close to a live poultry shop. Basic Brooklyn vibes. I would 100% come back. Finally the staff were super kind to me. I've been to metro rock multiple times and I just want to say although the gym isn't huge they have everything you need. They have multiple auto belays all around the gym and bouldering as well as belays with partners. I love love this gym because I like to go alone and having the auto belays at this gym make it easy for me to enjoy rock climbing alone. They have multiple levels and for the auto belays and bouldering. They also have a little store for chalk and shoes and other needs but also rentals are inexpensive. I truly love this place and have bought many friends here they run special promotions on different days. read more

Came here fairly recent for a introduction to ropes class. It's conveniently located a few blocks away from the Jefferson L train station. The class with Instructor Kelly was really good and informative. I needed a refresher from climbing top rope and he's really great. Small class size, we went around introducing ourselves prior to the class. After the class, we were allowed to stay in the gym to practice what we learned and have fun. There was many walls to either boulder, auto belay, top rope climb and lead climb (can be distinguished). I put one star down just because of front desk. It was my first time coming here and the guy behind the computer came off a bit rude and impatient because I asked him to repeat where I can find the bathrooms to change in. read more

This is where I started my climbing journey with an intro class! We learned how to boulder here, and it was a lot of fun (though scary at first!). The community was great, and I loved that everyone knew each other and was super encouraging. Our instructor also made sure to point that out as a big plus to climbing--getting to know everyone from seeing the same few people in the gym over and over. I also thought the value that MetroRock provided was really great: after the intro class, they gave us a week's worth of membership. I really appreciated the generosity, and that really encouraged us to keep climbing. We would definitely come back more often if we lived nearer, but overall would still recommend this location if you're looking for a climbing gym and live in the area! read more

This is a middle of the road gym for me, not bad, not great. Seems like it has a good community but can't gauge that from the limited time I spent climbing. Two rope climbing walls and a bouldering area in the middle. The ropes near the entry hang on a short wall with about five autos. These climbs stay in the 5.7ish range and seem like the kitty area. For climbers this area will get boring very quickly. Bouldering area in the center features two islands one of which you can top out on, and opposing walls. Plenty to climb. Setting seemed okay, they did have some nicer volume problems on lower grades. Grading might be leaning towards soft. The walls down the stairs feature much taller top rope, 3 autos and lead routes. I climbed the autos and had the most fun there. Nothing too memorable but the walls are tall so you'll get pumped quickly. Grading seemed pretty accurate and I liked the setting, nice traversing 5.9s on jugs. Staff was friendly, rented gear which was fine - madrock rental shoes is a plus. Pricey for a day pass with gear but it's nyc so expected. Definitely better gyms in nyc bit I would return if in the area. read more

This was over a year ago now but I wanted to add my experience. I visited town, and after a long flight took the belay test with my climbing partner of several years -- I tiredly answered a question wrong and failed the test, no worries but the employee wouldn't give the answer she was looking for. Once I accepted failure, and agreed we wouldn't top rope, but she still would not explain the correct answer she was looking for. She said we could take a ($150+) belay class to learn, and again, we were just traveling and checking out a local gym. It was stressful to say the least, and for as friendly and safety oriented as the climbing community has been to me, gatekeeping necessary safety pointers seems irresponsible -- especially trying to charge for it. My partner and I ended up using their small bouldering area that wasn't being reset, and were definitely overcharged for the length and quality of the visit. read more

Came here for a friends birthday gathering. It was my first time indoor rock climbing. It's definitely much smaller than other ones I've seen. For a Saturday afternoon it was not very crowded. It was reasonably priced for a day pass and were given harnesses and shoes. The guy there gave us a quick tutorial however for a first timer like myself, I could have used a more in-depth tutorial especially on how to land and use the harness and cable. There were walls and boulders of all difficulty range. Definitely a fun place to get your inner child out and challenge yourself. Some pretty tough boulders at the best price in the city, worth checking out. People who work there all super nice and they've cultivated a really supportive and friendly community. It's been my go to after clifs shut down. Been going for about a year and two of my friends have picked up climbing after climbing at metro-rock. Came here for a lead class on a Friday! The instructor Miguel is amazing he's funny, informative and super patient! I'm so afraid of falls but he let me learn falling at my own pace! Super nice gym, lots of bouldering options and lead options! Staff was very friendly and courteous, checked temperatures, offered a tour of the place but my friends have been there before so declined gracefully (: Lots of people bouldering, they have lockers inside the bathroom where you can lock and cubbies outside (more spacious than the inside lockers, couldn't fit my gym bag inside only on the outside), love the pit where there's a shape of a big star for the auto belays! How unique! The whole pit section is derived mostly of leading, looks intense but would love to be able to try them once lead certified! They have discounts for students on Fridays and ladies night during the week, love the varieties! Can't wait to come back to work on lead clipping with top roping :) see you guys soon! read more

Can you smell what the Rock is cooking??? The answer is MetroRock, LOL. When I first came in here everything smelled new: the freshly painted walls, the freshly built bathroom, the fresh smell of plastic lingering at the facility, the fresh smell of the boulders, etc... The holds were new, the walls were new, the ropes were new. Everything was brand new!!! Having said that, the holds were like sand paper. They hurt the flesh of my hands and at the end of the night I had so many calluses on my hands. The features were new. There are two sections in the middle of the facility where you need to top out to complete the boulder problem. Topping out can be a bit scary... For the top roping and lead climbing part there are three sections: The Sun, The Tree, and I forgot the name of the third one. The wall are way longer than the other climbing gyms in NYC. I felt very pumped when I was 2/3 of the wall length. The Tree looks very challenging as it is uneven and long. I have yet to try it out with lead climbing. I tried the 5.9 route and it was pumping, I guess I am not used to its long length yet... The sun section seems cool and eye appealing as the sun is clearly in the middle and protruding... The other section of the wall was challenging as well and the problems were a bit tricky as it went traverse. Perhaps it is setup this way at the beginning as when this gym gets busier it will become more straightforward... This place is definitely a cool place to exercise and to relax. I went to MetroRock recently and had a blast. I liked that their auto belays were scattered throughout the gym so you got to experience the whole facility. They also had the auto belays on the sun wall, which was really challenging for me (in a good way). I liked the bouldering too and the problems seemed interesting. They went through a through orientation of the facility and how to use the auto belay which I also appreciated. The facility was also very clean and well lit. Having gone to both the Cliffs and Brooklyn Boulders, MetroRock is definitely a welcomed addition. I thought the grades seemed consistent with what I'd expect from a climbing gym. The belay test is BYOB, bring your own belayer (or buddy?) Unfortunately I don't have any friends so I couldn't take the belay test. Women Crush Wednesdays are also fantastic! read more

I came back for round two on a Friday evening to use my free day pass and I had a great time! Practice does make perfect..I definitely felt more confident this time around to try the higher level climbs and jump down. The place was really packed but everyone is respectful of space and no one hogged the rocks. The staff were also attentive as always, constantly chalking up the rocks. I used the locker room this time and love that they actually provide tampons for the ladies who need it. Overall, I would stop by again when I have a chance! read more

This review is pertaining to the management refusing to refund almost $500 that was mistakenly charged as a result of their employee's mistake. This review was originally posted for MetroRock Bushwick but also pertains to MetroRock Williamsburg which is managed by the same manager. I discovered this issue after several months of charges and while initial communication was good, I was ghosted for a month by the manager Kasia who was supposedly inquiring with the owner. After a month of follow ups via email, calling the business and following up via text, I receive one last communication denying my request. I intend to file with small claims to sue for the money owed but I want to warn others so they can avoid going through this stress--do not open a membership here and if you do, make sure you fill out their new cancellation form (implemented after this issue occurred) and confirm your account is in the correct status and you aren't getting charged. The original mistake was that the employee used an incorrect billing status when I asked to pause my account after injuring my ankle in the gym read more

This place was so much fun and good for groups. However my only issue was one of the front desk people. The guy with the beanie was helpful until we were waiting for the harnesses. He gave us our shoes but we just stood there awkwardly for 10 mins wondering why we didn't get our harnesses so my brother checks in with him and he goes. "Yeah you're getting them" but he goes back on his computer. So we wait for another 15 idly.. and then I asked the other guy at the front desk to help us. He finally hands them over and doesn't ask if we need help putting them on, so we proceed to put them on and then he tells us it's on the wrong way. Which is fine whatever but at-least tell us ahead of time instead of watching us struggle. The one with the beanie, not sure what the issue was and why he had us wait when he could've passed it altogether? read more

FYI- this gym only uses ATC belay devices and requires you to take a 1.5 hour belay class if you've previously only climbed with a grigri device and not an ATC device. Additionally the mandatory belay class is only offered every other day that must be scheduled 48 hours in advance. If you arrive at the gym not knowing this you're out of luck. I completely understand the mandatory class for safety reasons but the ATC only device nature of the gym should be clearly advertised and told to all patrons before they pay for their day pass and equipment. The only section of Metrorock's website that references the ATC devices is the intro to climbing class description. No one at the front desk bothered to tell me about the ATC devices until after I paid. If you do not take the ATC belay class you are limited to 7 over crowded auto belay machines (which are further limiting because they don't allow you to take a break halfway up; as soon as you let go of the wall they automatically lower you down) and bouldering. Other than that the gym was fine (except for the old rental equipment)...hopefully management sees this and updates training for staff and the website. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experience here. I've never climbed before, but because I like hiking and rock scrambling, I thought it would be fun to take an introduction to rock climbing course here (it's 2 blocks from my apt.) to see if it's something I might be interested in exploring more. The instructor was knowledgable and good at making newcomers feel comfortable. I didn't expect to climb too far up the walls because I'm not in shape like I used to be, so I was mostly there to learn the ropes so I could continue climbing in the future if I decided I liked it. I did however plan on practicing on the bouldering walls after the course, but I decided not to, and I left not really knowing if It's something I want to continue. Unfortunately, there were loud screaming kids running and climbing around us (they weren't part of the group of us being instructed), and their parents (like most Brooklyn parents) don't have a concept of discipline and didn't tell them not to run into people, not to step on their feet, or even not to climb on the wall where we were being instructed (the instructor had to ask one of the young girls not to climb there). This very well might be my ignorance when it comes to climbing gyms, but I assumed we would be in an area away from others so we could concentrate. I'm totally new to this, so I didn't know what to expect, but maybe I need to go to an adult only climbing gym if such a thing exists? I didn't expect to feel like I was at Chuck E. Cheese's! The price of the class includes a 10 day membership, but I probably won't use it. read more

I was pretty stoked about the Walltopia walls so you can actually smear. The holds were extremely fresh and offered great friction which helped significantly on the overhung routes. Speaking of which, the lead cave is incredible! Its super aggressive and overhung to begin with which provides some really cool moves before you move above the roof. The gym provides more draws than you could possibly need, allowing for flexibility with your clipping position. The walls appear to be 50 to 60 feet tall easily which, as predominantly a boulderer, really wore me out in a good way. In the top roping area there is an star feature which provides for incredibly unique and interesting setting opportunities. I was generally impressed with the setting throughout the gym, particularly in the bouldering area, where there were a plethora of climbs for all ability groups. The bouldering area was moderately sized, but the setters made the most of the space and really packed the problems in. The facilities were super clean and well maintained. While the lockers were a little on the small side, the remainder of the locker room exceeded expectations. While I did not shower, they did offer towel service which I thought was a refreshing change from most gyms I have climbed at. I had climbed BKB and found the atmosphere at Metrorock to be much more welcoming. Overall, it was a great experience and I plan on climbing here again the next time I am in New York! read more

My favorite NYC climbing gym thus far. Pros: fun roped routes setting at a variety of grades, routes flow well and have thoughtful moves, and appear to be about 40-60 feet. not just a combination of random bouldering moves. decent variety of lead climbs including a tall, overhanging lead cave that builds endurance. lots of friction on new holds and walltopia walls allows for smearing (none of that wooden wall nonsense). some interesting features such as large volumes and slabs, although i don't think i saw any crack features. friendly staff (at least for me today- felt like much more of a welcoming community than at LIC cliffs). good number of autobelays. super clean and new. Cons: smaller bouldering area (not something i care much about, but if you primarily boulder several times a week, agree this may not be the gym for you). tiny lockers (for ants, like Zoolander would say)-- it's going to stink trying to store coats come winter. costly (but on par with the rest of NYC gyms). a pain in the butt to get to from manhattan in general, but especially when the L train is down... almost docked a star for this alone, but the other pros outweighed it :) read more

I really enjoyed the few times I've been to metro rock. I am not a climber or boulderer but my introductory lesson by Alex was great and thorough. I have gone both early on in the day and later on in the evening and it hasn't been too crowded or overwhelming. They change up the holds frequenty to keep things new and interesting and the other people who patronize metrorock are so nice and supportive. I should also mention that everytime I enter and leave I am greeted by the front desk person, which is nice and unfortunately hard to find in many other businesses. read more

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because it's a bit small and it has a bit of an odor around the whole gym. From the moment I opened the door into their facility I smelled it and ever since I got COVID, it somehow gave me superhuman sense of smell so I could smell things very strongly and faster than others. It's been a while since I last went to MetroRock, but my experiences here have always been pleasant! I think its one of the nicest, and safest feeling bouldering gyms in the NYC area. Facilities are clean and super nice, the staff is friendly, and the events are pretty unique! My one criticism is the membership prices! The student membership is still pretty outrageous and unaffordable to the average college student. I would love it if they could tweak that a bit so it could be somewhere I could climb often! read more

New gym so it's clean. It's a small size gym, smaller than the cliffs & Bkb. However the price is the same as the other two which really doesn't justify the cost. I think if you go a couple of times a week there just aren't enough routes on bouldering walls to work on. One of the rope walls is very tall but the rest are just the same height as the cliffs/Bkb. Staff are friendly except a tall young man at the front desk seems a bit obnoxious like he is more superior. He was referencing repeatedly the gym tries to foster important of outdoor safety. The way he said it made us feel like he thinks we are such idiots gym climbers. There aren't enough staff to supervise the gym. In fact there were no staff walking around inside the gym to make sure safety of new climbers. To be fair front desk was very busy. Anyway, glad we checked it out but don't think we will be back any time soon. read more

After being a member at this gym for about a year I can say it was the right choice for someone who had barely any climbing experience beforehand. The staff is helpful when it comes to recommending gear, knowledgeable about climbing technique and emit a great deal positivity. Which can be huge when you feel like you've been working on V3's for 4 months and not getting anywhere. The facilities have always been clean and well maintained. The space can become rather chaotic during busy hours or when large groups of children come in, but it has never interfered with my climbing. Weight room and yoga space are great places to stretch and allow a person to perform most workout regimens. Highly recommend this gym to anyone wishing to delve into climbing and have a great time while doing it. read more

I've been a member here since right after it opened. As a whole...just ok. I only boulder. The routes are great and always being refreshed. Along with location, that's my favorite thing about this place. The staff is nice and helpful. Locker rooms are fine. It gets crowded like any other gym at peak times. Pricing is decent, a bit less than other NYC climbing gyms, which is why I don't complain too much. Now the bad, the gym/training/lifting area is laughable. Very basic, VERY small. Two people max can fit, if you're actually trying to work out. Cardio equipment consists of 3 busted ass spin bikes. That's it, no treadmill, no elliptical. It's a shame too...the commercial space used for this entire place is huge. Also a massive outdoor roof deck, which is used only a few times in the summer. They could have put in a top notch gym/training area, but someone dropped the ball on that. Competitions, bday, other stuff that causes closures. When there's a competition 2/3 of the place could be unusable due to resets. This causes significant crowding, borderline dangerous. Sometimes can last for 4-5 days. (resets, then the competition itself). If you live close and/or want one of the cheaper options. Try it out. If you want to venture out, pay a bit more and get a better total package...look elsewhere. read more

I mainly boulder, and I've been a member everywhere, Cliffs, BKB, GP81, here. Never got too crowded here, good mix of people from beginners to seasoned, and friendly staff. I'm still pretty much a beginner so I don't know much about routesetting, but I felt like there were more problems requiring a wholesome mix of techniques here, whereas I remember BKB having a lot of jugs and overgenerous holds and Cliffs having flashy and fun but kind of weirdly focused or contrived themes, at least it seemed to me. All the gyms may have evolved over the years though, so I don't know. This one's my favorite. read more

If you are climbing with other experienced climbers then this place works. But let's say if you wanted to belay a friend who's a newbie just to give them the experience then this place is not it. They require both belayer and climber to be certified. Which sucked for taking a new person along to get into the sport (auto belays limit what routes you can do). Second is forcing people to ATC belay during tests versus using a device they are more comfortable with. Not a big issue for most but i can see where it can make people nervous. They say you can use a gri gri after but how do they know you don't have a death grip on your gri gri because you Took the lead test with an ATC? Overall could be better. I wouldn't say it's a beginner friendly gym like the cliffs or bkb. read more

They say that not all gyms are created equal. I believe them. Aside from the superb, thoughtful routes and their setters, aside from the amenities (yoga, cardio/weight room, ample locker space and shower room) aside from the flexible hours of operation....the team and community here have been a life-line and passive support system. The crew is thoughtful, friendly, helpful, encouraging, positive, and encouraging. Some gyms have a less-than-great staff where condescension and intimidation set the tone for the culture of the entire gym...not here. Prepare to be challenged and raised up. read more

Tallest walls out of all the gyms in the city, for sure. Bouldering is less than BKB but theres still a lot of variety that should satisfy most climbers. They use ATC devices for top rope, which Ive never used, but the staffer testing me gave me a quick rundown while I was getting certified. The walls are nice, tacky and not made of wood. If you're into bouldering, there's a few fun overhangs but for the most part, the sets leave a lot to be desired. Definitely a better spot for lead/top roping with a ton of auto-belays. Depends on your preference, but if you're looking for a lot of interesting/dynamic bouldering problems and a good space to lift weights/take classes, then IMO you're better off going to GP81/BKB (for bouldering) or Cliffs (for top roping/lead). I found the staff to be not the most friendly on average. I recall vividly being stared/glared at for extended periods of time, which I found strange/borderline rude and made me feel uncomfortable at times. Gym's usually pretty dead, even during evenings - which is great b/c you don't have to wait on problems, but not good if you prefer to see/interact with other climbers. Yoga/Core classes weren't available the entire summer while I was a member. My climbing shoes were also stolen from my gym bag on one of the busier nights. Something which I never thought would happen at a climbing gym, but hey they do have lockers so would just advise to be extra careful here. I really did want to like this place, given it's the local climbing gym in the neighborhood. But after a few months and my shoes got stolen, realized it wasn't the gym for me. I'd say it's worth a one month trial run and see for yourself. But sign up when they're waiving the $100 activation fee which is definitely a jip for what you're getting here. read more

We've lived in this neighborhood for 13 years --and were SO excited about having this climbing facility just a block from our home! We were sadly disappointed in the horrible customer service and the fact that it's $460/mo for a family membership. Really? It's a nice facility, but not worth that. We were also interested in their after school program, but it ended up being $61/day, and didn't even include pickups from school. We'd gladly pay $2K upfront for a year membership right now! At these prices, and with how we and other families in our neighborhood were treated, this place won't last. (They'd do well to consider becoming more budget-friendly since parking is already scarce and the L train will be decommissioned soon for the next couple years.) read more
