My friends and I come here regularly to boulder. It's a smaller gym but quiet and the trainers are super helpful. The trainers are experienced climbers who give great tips and techniques to help you progress as a climber. The routes here are set a little harder than other places but if you can master the techniques they're highlighting it does help you get better faster. The crowd that comes here is also local and super friendly. It's a nice departure from Brooklyn boulders as its pretty quiet and much less crowded. The package for a 10 pack is also quite reasonable if you want to really concentrate and get better at climbing. I guess the only real detractor here is that the climbing gym isn't open for open climb all day. It usually has after school classes and individual training sessions earlier on and open climb starts between 630 and 7 depending on the day. read more

I'm sorry to see that management has taken my review rather personally rather than constructively. I'm equally disappointed to be effectively called a liar. While I don't doubt they have their own perspective, this was an accurate description of my experience. Communication from management was very ad-hoc (no one ever 'sat me down' to explain anything) and as mentioned in the original review, they even connected me to a random stranger in a different country instead of one of their own employees. Also sad to see management didn't address the other issues in my review which made me want to cancel my membership. The owner cited me 'moving' as the source of problems. I actually cancelled my membership months before I even knew I was going to move, because of the quality of the sessions declining due to the summer camp set-up, which I mentioned in my original review. This would have given me around three months to make-up the last two sessions of the month I had paid for, which proved impossible to schedule with the new trainer. Around a month before I moved I brought up that I would like to be refunded since I hadn't been able to schedule a session with the new trainer and wouldn't be able to after moving. The owner said they would never have offered me a New Year deal they offer everyone if they had known I was moving... but it's pretty common in New York City to move or change leases after one year. It's not like I moved after six months. I also take issue with the characterization of my schedule as erratic. My schedule is about as normal as anyone who works a typical 9-5 office job. If they had availability earlier in the morning for me, I would have taken that slot but all they had was 8-9. Sometimes, like a normal person, I have to travel for work. Sometimes I have to go in for an early meeting. These things are normal and if they're intolerable than maybe this gym isn't a good fit for anyone with a full-time job. As if my trainers did not need to reschedule just as often for personal reasons. It feels like EA employs a double standard where their trainers are absolved for scheduling conflicts but customers are not. That's not a lie, that's based on the new trainer cancelling on me 4 times, which I still have texts and emails from. I'm not the type to use Yelp solely for bashing on a company (most of the reviews I leave are positive) but I am going to use it for it's intended purpose of describing my experience. read more

Had a poor experience here recently. I've been climbing here for over a year now. Every once in a while the open climbing schedule changes and I get an explanation as to why. No big deal. This time I show up for open climb and the place is not ready for climbing, so I ask the owner, who happened to be there, what is going on. He says no one really shows up for open climb Tuesday, so we are going to have to make some decisions. In the middle of our conversation he walks back behind the wall and ignores me as I ask him what that means. He didn't have the decency to explain anything he just hid from view as I was trying to talk with him. I wanted to ask why don't you email your customers when you are going to close? Because I get emails all the time about their new products and services... It felt like because I was a climbing member and not one of his training clients paying him big bucks, I didn't deserve a response. Last I checked my payments have cleared for the last year and I paid for a service he is not delivering on, the least I can get is an explanation. What a prick. read more

Everyday Athlete's Brooklyn Heights location features a bouldering wall and full range of training equipement (kettlebells, olympic rings, hangboards, medicine balls, ect...). It specializes in small classes that allow you to get a personal attention for less than half the cost of a personal training session. At times you don't get as much attention as I would like, however I try to keep this in perspective since it's not a personal training session. I've been going there off and on for over a year, so I know the trainers pretty well. I find them to be friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Also, since it's a small and friendly environment, the trainers tend to go out of their way to help you after class if you have questions or just want to hang out. Recently I've been going to their new class, called "Kettlebells for Climbers". It's a lot of full body/core movements. Joe, who teaches the class, is an awesome trainer/muah thai fighter and is whipping my lazy butt into shape. Overall I highly recommend this spot. -Brian read more

A friend told us about this spot awhile ago, and I finally pulled myself from my couch on a Saturday afternoon. I was new to "bouldering" so I wasn't sure what to expect, until Saturday my only experience was in my 6th grade gym. We called in advance to make sure they accepted walk-ins and it was only $25 bucks for each of us! They even sent out waiver in advance to make everything easier for us. The environment was mixed-there was a family, a few couples, and kids but everyone respected each others space. Everyone at this location was SO nice. The women at the front desk was laid-back and her sales technique was excellent. One of biggest pet-peeves is going to a gym and being pushed for a higher sale because "it makes sense." She casually mentioned each of their specials (which were awesome) and gave us the rundown. The instructors themselves were extremely nice- we got in a little late (around 4:10) so we walked in after the 4pm intro speech. They took the extra time to make sure our shoes fit properly and gave us a few climbing tips. The experience itself was awesome! I thought I would kill it, and be able to climb without a problem-let me tell you.. it's more difficult than you think! After 45 minutes I was pretty tired! I definitely felt it in my hands the next day! Needless to say we will definitely be returning- it's not a huge course but the people and experience make up for what they lack in space. read more

I'm emerging from my long Yelp hibernation to write a glowing review for one of my favorite businesses, because they deserve it. I've been climbing here every week for about 1.5 years. The staff is fantastic and the wall is flexible enough to provide pretty much limitless bouldering routes. The vibe of the space is friendly, which has gone a long ways towards keeping me there. And if you're new to climbing (as I am), I cannot recommend it enough. It is one of the few exercise activities I've found to be genuinely fun and sustainable. read more

What great fun! I came here with a friend for an introductory rock climbing session. You get a pair of shoes (that are very tight), an time to practice up against the huge rock walls they have. Its quite technical, and I'd say you need to be fairly fit to enjoy, but overall, a fun activity. read more

I used EA for many years for my children and loved it, but it has really gone downhill in the last couple of years. Instructors and programs are nowhere near as good as they used to be. The camps for the last two years have been terrible: children hated it, inadequate supervision of children (one of my kids wondered out the door without them noticing, lucky I was just a few doors up), my children got terribly sunburned (even though I put on sunblock in the morning and provided hats and more sunblock - they left them in the sun without shirts, hats or sunblock on for hours!). I used to love EA but it is not the same place I am disappointed to say. read more

Do not work at this place, they are shifting around money not to pay employees properly. Sometimes they don't have the Money until 4 days later. Checks bounce and the employees who work there for a while are people who have nothing else to go to they are comfortable with life. read more

My 5 year old son (Milo) just finished summer camp at EA and he could not have had a better experience. He was excited every morning and had great stories to tell every evening. But most importantly, his confidence and self-awareness really blossomed throughout the summer as his coaches taught him how to use his body to expertly jump, climb and run. I can't recommend EA enough -- we could not have been more happy with the experience. BTW, I would like to thank one coach in particular. Milo spoke endlessly about how Mason spent time with him and it was obvious that not only did Mason care for Milo, but that Milo had a great affinity for Mason. When I met him, it all made sense. So thanks Mason -- and Milo says what's up! Take your kid here -- you will be happy that you did. read more

I love Everyday Athlete! I'm recovering from a broken foot and have only recently been cleared for exercise. I've been working one-on-one with Clare a couple of times a week for the last month, and my strength and stability have both improved so much in a short time. Clare is great about steadily increasing the difficulty and giving me new challenges, and the exercises are more fun than a traditional boot camp workout. I've also joined her Saturday class, and she makes alterations based on my needs. I just signed up for another month of training, and I look forward to graduating to some of the high intensity classes on weekday mornings. I highly recommend them for fitness classes and personal training, not just for climbing! read more

I am a HUGE fan of Everyday Athlete!!! I have been working with Emily since Sept. and not only have my shoulder aches and pains disappeared, but my tennis game has greatly improved since I'm so much stronger. I have never in my 20 years of strength training classes had an instructor pay such close attention to my movements and make proper corrections, and I only wish I had found this gym sooner!! They are very flexible and after a recent injury, Emily was able to customize the movements within a class so I could still participate. Absolutely the best gym around!! read more

Everyday Athlete is a friendly, absolutely wonderful local business, and I would give it my highest recommendation for its kids' classes. My middle-school-aged daughter was enrolled in the parkour classes at Everyday Athlete (Bk Heights location), and I cannot wait to enroll her again this year. The coaches were not only super fun and supportive, but they also really know their stuff. Unlike many kids' exercise classes, this was not just about getting her to run and jump around. It is actually a serious athletic training program, in the guise of a fun hour and a half of doing what kids love to do (running and jumping and climbing). I was so impressed with the coaches ability to keep he kids moving, and their interest in imparting an understanding of what they were doing as part of the class. (They dedicated some of the cool-down portion of the class to a discussion of what parkour is all about, some of its key terms, its basic history, and so on.) I should also add that unlike many of the other kids' exercise classes that are in large corporate gyms, this is a small, locally owed and run business that very clearly treats all of its employees well and fosters a sense of community. I have only experienced their kids' casses but imagine that their personal training and other classes are great as well. read more

I had all three of my boys, ages 4, 11 and 12 in summer camp last year at Everyday Athlete last summer and it was awesome. The staff is all super friendly and engaged, it never felt like they were "phone-ing it in." My boys had never rock climbed before and quickly became avid climbers. I really loved how much they were outside, in the gorgeous parks on the waterfront, really getting to know the neighborhood and take advantage of all our amazing brooklyn parks and playgrounds. The inside time was just as rich- obstacle courses were different every day, creative, challenging and super fun, dance parties and climbing...the kids never wanted to stop. The best part for me was knowing how active my kids were all day, being outside, getting to run and play their hearts out, and how relaxed and calm they were in the evenings because of it. My youngest son said he wanted "go to school at EA." Sounds like a good idea to me! read more
