Metropolitan Van and Storage was the ONLY company we contacted that actually had experience in moving to Orinda,CA. They knew the rules of the town, the special area designated for moving vans and that the small windy roads needed special consideration. Art Murray was our coordinator. He came 2x to evaluate the time and amount of boxes needed for our move. He explained what we needed to pack and what his crew would pack. Art showed up on the day of the move and coordinated the team. Art even split the team into indoor and outdoor movers so as not to bring dirt into our new home. The team was efficient and worked very hard. Jimmy and his crew, Melvin, Marco, and Chewy were such hard workers. they showed up on time. They took great care with my things. Everything made it safely including my sculptures. They went out of their way to place my furniture where I wanted it in my new apartment. They worked fast. Also, leading up to the actual move, I always was able to get a hold of my point person at Metropolitan to ask questions. As I was packing .... I would have more and more things to ask. Jimmy and his crew did most of the packing. I probably should've let them do all of it because they worked much faster than my friends and I did. My plants also made it perfectly. Moving around the holiday season is always a stressful task, but the Metropolitan made the move stress free, fast and the team was very efficient! They moved my 1bd 1bath apartment within and 90 minutes and this included going down two flights of stairs because my apartment was on the third floor with no elevator. Communication with the Sales Manager, Rob and the moving team was great. Rob answered all my questions and even adjusted the original moving plan to include a second stop to move my storage unit with no problem! The moving team called when they were on their way to give us time to get everything ready for their arrival, once they arrived they started to get to work. In all, it took them 5 hours to move all my belongings, apartment and storage unit, and had a great attitude the entire time. I couldn't recommend this company more! Had an in-state move with these guys as well as an out-of-state move and it was a HUGE relief. Moving can be daunting trying to figure out all of the logistics but luckily Metropolitan helped us with one of the most important parts. They scheduled in advance and kept in contact with us right up until they pulled into the driveway. The professionalism of Matt and his crew was top notch. This company really does deserve the 5 stars given. Were a military family whose stuff got caught in the port strikes so it took right at 6 months to receive our household goods. Every so often I would call metropolitan van and storage to see if there were any updates, even though there wasn't they were always very friendly and professional. As soon as our stuff was unloaded at the port they called me immediately to schedule delivery. We knew about it before our transportation office did. James who delivered the stuff also deserves 5 stars. He called me a few days before delivery to say he was on the way and told me when to expect the delivery. He was right on time and ready to go upon arrival. During delivery James did a good job protecting the floor and door frames to prevent damage, and had all of the necessary paperwork available to sign. Everything was very organized and moved smoothly! The biggest win is the only things broken we're some ceramic flowerpots, and dishes that were probably broken before they even left the coast of Korea, so I'm very pleased with how well our stuff was cared for during its time with metropolitan van and storage! Military families know that sometimes moving companies can be crappy, so if you're reading this as a military family rest assured that you were assigned a really good company. Without question, Matt and his crew are the most professional, efficient, and reliable moving crew that I have had the pleasure of working with during 4 military moves. From the first phone call I received from Matt more than a week out from my moving date to begin open dialogue, to the final signature on his tablet to complete my move, Matt set the standard in every facet of his job. Matt and his crew showed up to my house 15-20 minutes early solely to shake my hand individually and introduce themselves, walk through my house to get an idea of the layout, and spend time explaining to me the process of how they were going to pack/load and answered any and all questions I had. They all had positive attitudes and were eager to work hard and you could tell they were passionate about giving world class customer service. It is obvious that Matt has spent thousands of his own dollars on moving equipment ranging from thick/durable drop cloths/blankets, floor pads, furniture wrapping, and large elastic bands to secure cloths and covers to all of your belongings. They put up protective material on door frames, floors, walls, stairwells etc resulting in not a single scratch or dent to the 2 story property. I have hand built a good amount of my furniture and I did not worry once about Matt and his crew mishandling or damaging any of it. Matt, Shane, and the rest of the crew are extremely hardworking, respectful, skilled, and reliable. I would feel completely comfortable having them move my house from point A to point B without me even being at the pickup or delivery site. Horrible experience. Got an estimate, "not to exceed" for our move from Bay Area to Colorado. After that...nothing. My rep went AWOL and no one else had any follow up and I was the one making calls/emails checking in on things. The movers at the pickup were great. Delivery, not so much as they were hurrying to get to another move--constantly dropping boxes. Things went relatively smoothly at the pickup until they ran out of room on the truck and had to call for a second truck, (bobtail). We were told the smalller truck would follow the larger truck to CO. Yeah right. They took our stuff back to the yard and completely re-packed/stuffed the larger truck. No regard to Fragile stickers, (used 4 for each box), no regard to "do not stack". They opened larger boxes that were closed and stuffed other items inside and re-tapped. Dissasembled furnature and didn't put back together at destination. Also dissasembled other items, (golf organizer, etc) and delivered them in pieces for me to put back together. Essentially, they did everything they could to stuff our stuff in a too-small truck with no regard to our belongings. Simply, this company does not care. 2 months ago we Moved (see previous yelp) a few days ago the Owner reached out to me and apologized for the overestimation and promptly returned $1200 (see pic) Previously, I gave 1 star for movers zero for company, I would now like to give back 3 stars for the ownership, in honoring their deal. I hold back one star for the entire experience. But, ANYONE reading this can see that the one sore spot was addressed and that the ownership did not just let this slide by, which they could've easily done. Instead, they went back 2 months later and fixed it!! We recently used Atlas Van Lins/Metropolitan Van & Storage for our move from San Francisco to Denver. From the initial walkthrough by the Atlas representative who prepared our quote, we felt more confident in the service Atlas would provide than the three other van lines we spoke to. They provided us with the most competitive pricing and took the time to explain the process to us. When it came time for the actual move, the team showed up promptly, took the time to properly prep our home with floor protection, and efficiently packed and cataloged all of our belongings. The next day they once again arrive on time and spent the day loading the boxes and furniture onto the truck. The Metropolitan Van & Storage driver, James Saraiva, kept me informed of his driving progress via text and arrived on the other side at the agreed upon date/time with an equally qualified team of helpers. They unloaded the boxes and reassembled furniture and had completed the job within 3 hours. Everything arrived safely and intact. They were even kind enough to take the packing paper and boxes that we had emptied by that time to recycle, to help minimize the amount we would need to dispose of. Hire these guys! On time, on-budget, and all the 'surprises' were HAPPY ONES! I came across Metropolitan Van & Storage when they were unloading a family who was moving into my apartment complex in Vacaville. I struck up a brief conversation with one of the workers who was unloading household items, and was impressed by the guy's warm manner and friendly smile. So when it came time to say 'adios' to my apartment of 13 years, I was immediately thinking of getting a quote from Metropolitan. I contacted them and Jeff Pauley rang me back and came to my apartment to do the estimate for my local 'in-town' move, which occured today 8/29/19. In brief, I was stunned by how great the service was. The team showed up with a plenty-big-enough moving van 15 minutes EARLY. They introduced themselves, and were quite concerned they weren't 'blocking anyone in' who might need to get out of a parking place in my complex. They set about shrink-wrapping my ancient furniture as if my gear was precious cargo (it was 'happy meal' furniture from el-cheapo local store, and plenty old as well). That didn't deter Mono and Kell from being super careful not to damage my stuff. IMPRESSiVE. While I had moved many of my lighter items myself, the heavy furniture was not an issue for the 'dynamic duo from Metro' - they moved me into an upstairs unit at my new location and never ONCE complained about the 12-stairs they had to negotiate or the 90-degree entrance into my apartment at the top of those same steps! The weather was heading for a hot one, but they got me done by 11:30 am so they beat the clock and the heat! 3 hours from start to finish, my move was completed, and these two fine gentlemen explained everything step-by-step. They did an initial walk-through of the facilities at both ends of the move to look for pre-existing wall damage, etc. I initialled the pre- and post- move inspections. Many people don't know but tipping your movers is a thing. They get hourly wages, but the tips are very much a part of their earnings. I did some research on the web to find out the method used to calculate a tip for each mover in your team. It's much appreciated, my guys were very happy to receive the tip I gave each of them. The tip is separate from the moving charges - and should be given in cash to the workers. I paid by cashier's check, which I had made up about a week before the planned move date. These guys rate 5 stars, and I'd give them a higher rating if there was one available. As I signed my final delivery receipt, I told Mono (the 'foreman') that i was 100% satisfied, God knows when I'm NOT happy I will say so as well. I shopped one other mover also from Martinez, but this firm beat its competitor by about $500 (because Metropolitan has a FAIRFIELD location they can source trucks and workers from. The 'other guy' wanted about $300+ EXTRA $$ for 'drive time' from their warehouse in Martinez. Nice if you can get it, but I couldn't see the value added. FYI- bought myself 10 of those Black and Yellow snap-on lid moving tubs that Costco sells for about $8 each. Far more than I needed, it turned out. Again, my guys had no issue dollying 3 or 4 of those tubs at a time. They worked quickly but very very carefully, and helped me place my furniture in optimal locations. I am so impressed by this company, they made moving after 13 years at my old location pain-free and FAST! NO DAMAGE to any of my gear! It may get better in some way, but I'm darned if I can imagine how it could! Jeff Pauley answered all my (many) questions and concerns, and he was even flexible when PG&E pulled a surprise 'planned power outage' on my initial move out date! Jeff got me the following day scheduled at MY urgent request (i was afraid of 100 degree heat with no A/C power). What impressed me most was no one at Metro EVER acted put out of 'tweaked' if I asked questions, even if I asked the same question in multiple emails. Yes, I am a bit on the anal side! Their business office called me on each of the two days prior to my scheduled move to 'confirm' the date and time. Very reassuring and professional. During March 18-20, 2019, my in-laws moved within California from Saratoga to Nipomo. We were totally impressed with Matt and his crew. They were prompt, efficient, and professional during all phases of packing, loading, and unloading. We just completed our move from Texas to Arizona using Atlas Moving company who utilized Matt as our driver from Metropolitan Van & Storage. I only have great things to say! We had a hiccup in Dallas, our house moved to the warehouse first and then loaded to Matt's truck. Matt took the time to re-inventory every item, having the warehouse crew unwrap each item so he could check for any damage prior to loading our goods on his truck and taking responsibility for them. We were loaded on Tuesday and delivered on Thursday. Matt and his crew did a great job bringing our 2200 sq ft home into our now 1700 sq ft home, needless to say it was a tight squeeze. We are very happy with our move! As a military family with kids and pets, we've got a lot going on. We met with Matt, at our Pleasant Hill location. Matt and his crew got there on a Monday and packed our whole place in 8 hours. I was so surprised! I didn't put anything in boxes, because I knew they would do it carefully and be liable if anything broke. As Matt's crew packed, I was able to talk to them and get to know them a bit. Which was great, after all they were packing our belongings. Our things were delicately wrapped in lots of paper. We decided to drive across our beautiful country, which took us 11 days. Knowing that Matt was driving our belongings from The Bay Area all the way to South Carolina, was a relief. Fast forward three weeks, yes it took three weeks, but honestly we were able to enjoy our trip without rushing and think about what would go where in our new house. When Matt showed up, I was so ecstatic. When the boxes were brought into our new place, I immediately started unwrapping and putting my kitchen stuff away, it felt like Christmas! I am so glad everything went smoothly, from the beginning with the surveyor, to the day of packing with Matt and his crew, and all the way to the other side of the country. I moved from California to Texas and this company did a great job. Art was the sales rep who met me at my home and went over everything with me and gave me my quote. Art was very friendly and did a great job. He was easy to get in contact with throughout the whole process and even after I was already moved in. Matt was in charge of the moving and he did a fantastic job. He was very friendly and professional and his moving crew was very nice and did a fast and great job accommodating my moving needs. The greatest part of working with this company was that due to my own poor planning, I had a few additional boxes to move and Matt so generously met me at the truck yard on his own time and let me load the additional couple boxes into the truck. All my stuff got to my new home and nothing was damaged. Matt drove it there himself and met with me in my new home and even gave me some local recommendations as he knew the Dallas area a bit. I'd like to give them 5 starts, but, sadly, when moving, communication is a key component. The packers and haulers were awesome - but communication from this company is sorely lacking. Moving is very stressful to begin with, and when communication fails, even more so. I feel our moving coordinator's communication was poor. I was contacted to say delivery would be May 18 or 19. We were taking possession of our new home on May 19, so I said the 19th would be perfect. Not sure what changed but in an instant the delivery date became May 22 - ONE DAY PAST contract due date. Additionally, our "not to exceed estimate" came in $10 over (which, btw, is a violation of law) which really isn't much, but when I mentioned what our contact said, the comment was ignored. I mentioned it again when she called me to get my credit card number to pay, and it was again ignored. When I mentioned our contract said "delivery on or before May 21" and you are delivering May 22, my comment was ignored. Also - we paid almost $1,300 to crate four pieces of artwork to be transported and uncrated upon arrival - which they contracted out to a third party - the crating was perfect. However, 10 days after delivery I still hadn't heard from our move coordinator to get these pieces uncrated so I emailed her. Basically she said she was done with the move - and I had to remind her of the uncrating. NO RESPONSE TO THAT EMAIL. One day later I get a call from a contractor to schedule the uncrating - they informed me they were just asked to do this the day before - of course because I had to remind our coordinator that it needed to be done - and NOTHING from our coordinator apologizing for the oversight or even letting me know I would be contacted to schedule the uncrating....fortunately, I was home. I contracted with Atlas Moving & Storage/Metro Van to move my belongings from California to Florida. My items were in Atlas storage for 6 months, then transferred to Metro Van for 4 months until my home was built. Two months after I opened the majority of my boxes, I discovered a damaged piece of furniture and missing boxes. I had 180 days from delivery within which to file a claim for damage/loss. I chose to file the claim immediately rather than wait because I thought Metro Van would have an easier time locating my missing boxes. However, they were very quick to tell me my belongings could not be found and paid my claim. I truly believe that it was easier for them to pay a nuisance claim than to waste employee time searching for missing boxes which would have had to have been identified and cross checked against customers who filed claims as well. I complained several times and requested they check their storage facility again because I was convinced my belongings were somewhere in their warehouse -- misplaced when my items were moved from Atlas to Metro Van. By the end of September, all my newly ordered furniture had arrived and I was able to organize my pantry and closets, and put away the remainder of my items. However, I discovered additional missing items. I contacted the claims department and advised them of this and was told I could file a claim but it would no doubt be denied. My 180 days had not yet expired. The customer service rep then sent me an email instructing me to file a new claim under a new order number. A few days after filing that claim, she phoned saying my claim was denied because I did not report these items missing at the time of delivery. How I asked could I have opened each box upon delivery when I had over 275 boxes to open. She dismissed me and stated I could file an arbitration claim. Needless to say, I am very angry and am 200% convinced my belongings still remain somewhere in their warehouse. I have no idea what happens when missing boxes surface. It is doubtful they will waste employee time trying to match them to their owners, especially since a claim has been processed and paid. Be careful especially if your items must remain in storage. I have only great things to say about Metropolitan Van and Storage. OMG, they saved our lives! Very organized, went above and beyond in all areas. Guided us to make good decisions regarding the number of packers on our main packing day, as well as how many and what types of boxes to order. After 15 years of living here we had a lot of stuff. Plus 30 years of inherited items, all kinds of items stored here by family members. We thought we had most of our things packed but left our most precious items for last. We saw what a careful but efficient job our packers and movers  were doing on all of our other things and finally cried "uncle" about the special items. So glad we did. Rob Rivera made sure that we understood the estimate and what would happen on which days. Rob was spot on. Matt Stockett took care of making sure our packers knew ahead of time what we needed. The best move we have ever had! The communication was spot on! From Shawn, our first contact with the company, to Matt our driver, they were in constant touch with us in our move from California back home to Texas. Movers lost multiple boxes and damaged furniture! My company contracted Metropolitan to cover the SF leg of my cross-country move. I had thought the move had gone smoothly until the good arrived at the destination and multiple items (painting, nightstand, speaker stand) had experienced significant damage during transport. Worse, multiple pieces of furniture were missing (only 2 of my 4 dining chairs arrived) and a significant chunk of my kitchen was missing. Strangely enough, a rug that I had never seen was delivered with the rest of my goods. You'd think that Metropolitan would be quick to fix this bizarre situation, but it just got worse from here. It took them weeks to confirm that they had accidentally shipped some of my items to New Jersey (to the owner of the rug). Communication was delayed, and I had to consistently pursue them to make sure they were making progress on returning my stuff. More than a month later, I still don't have my chairs or boxes. If you're looking for disposal, I think they'd do a great job, but I suggest you look elsewhere for movers. read more

I was extremely pleased with my move start to finish. I had a small move from San Jose to South Lake Tahoe. I had gotten quite a few estimates from other companies and they were all very expensive. Not only did they come in at a much more reasonable cost, they were efficient, timely and responsive to my needs, time schedule and took the care to pack my items carefully. Don't let the negative reviews influence you. I am a small business owner and understand the value of Yelp reviews. It is important to look at more recent ones vs. the older, less applicable reviews. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE! I had scheduled a month in advance a cross-country move from California to Chicago with Metropolitan Van and Storage. A few weeks ago, we did a walk through of my apartment so the moving coordinator could see all of my belongings and get an idea of how much support we would need. I showed him how heavy my furniture was, what I had, etc. I had told the moving coordinator that it would take at least 3 people to help move my stuff cross-country considering it took 5 people to move my stuff across town 2 years ago. We were on the same page. Fast forward to today, the day we had scheduled to move, two movers showed up to my door. They took a look at everything I had and told me that the move was not possible because I did not "package" everything correctly. They told me that they were going to charge me thousands of dollars more for them to re-package everything... Where were the instructions on how to package everything in the beginning? Everything was in boxes, and completely taped up. Keep in mind, I've moved a lot in the past few years and I know how to package everything. Moments later, the two men that had shown up had left my apartment with no notice. I called the manager and asked him what had happened and he told me: "we're not going to do the move for you. This seems too difficult." Too difficult? If it was too difficult couldn't he had told me this on the day we did the walk around? This company is completely unprofessional and not reliable. AWFUL...DO NOT USE. We hired these guys to move one piano, we even purchased the "Full value protection" they offer. These guys dragged the piano down our porch stairs ruining each one as they went along. The management and owner, Rob, Jeff and Dennis, acknowledged they ruined our porch stairs, and stated they would have only their contractor fix it, as he was the "cheapest guy". Owner, Jeff said they would provide a quote. The quote provided was just a dollar amount with no scope of work attached. We reached out to them via, phone, email and certified mail. No response. I have moved way too many times in my life. For a myriad of reasons this was the most stressful and emotional. I could not have asked for an overall better experience These guys kicked serious ass. Believe me, I've seen a lot of crappy movers in my life. These guys exceeded my expectations They were incredibly respectful. And put up with me and my rather emotional state of the move. I received 3 Moving quotes. 2 local and one from the Bay Area. The other 2 quoted me $1,000 more than this company so I decided to go with the less expensive movers since I was tight on cash. The movers came earlier than scheduled, which I totally appreciated. They came in to the old house and hustled the entire time. The van was loaded in less than 3 hours! I wish I would've pack everything so that everything could've gone on the truck. That was my bad. The guys were so quick and very careful with my stuff. We drove to the new house and they did the same thing. They were non-stop and very polite. When I asked for something to be placed somewhere and my husband changed his mind (or vise versa) they had no problem rearranging things for us. At the end, the move was done in less time than quoted and (as promised) more money was deducted from my quote. Honesty, excellent customer service! I'd use them again, but I'm going to live the rest of my life in this house. So all I can do is very highly recommend this company for all your moving needs. Just make sure to pack everything yourself if you're not using their packing service. Lesson learned. read more

They did come recommended, but I can't figure out why. They tried to over charge us even though we had an agreed upon price. We ended up moving a third of the stuff ourselves just to get previous house cleaned out to better show. They did not put everything away as promised. They quickly just dumped everything and left boxes hidden in garage that were supposed to be placed in bedrooms. They ignored the damaged items that we pointed out. We are still finding damaged furniture that is not able to be repaired as we unpack the rest of our boxes left in garage. I would not recommend this moving company to anyone. read more

I would hire them again any time. We were moving my mom as she was down sizing from a 4bd to a 2bd. Mark was amazing helping her through the process, its never easy to leave your family home.
