I've been here a few times. They have BBQ on Sundays at five. The DJ (DJ Madonnavon) is awesome. I love the black walls sprinkled with glitter. They have a big back yard for chillin. Great air conditioning and WiFi. But my big problem is the bathrooms. They have separate men's and women's rooms but there are no locks on the doors and so you have to hold the door shut while doing your thing and guys won't even check to see if there is anyone in the stall, they will just push the door open. I know no locks on doors is fairly common in gay bars but for some reason these bathrooms are more difficult to handle. read more

Well, what can I say? It was a very fun evening, a departure from the usual Stern-und-Drunk rigmarole of a night out in Chelsea. People smile in Williamsburg-- they even smile at you. And keep smiling. And keep smiling, until you introduce yourself. And then they make out with you. And invite you home for a game of touchy-touchy. Sweet, drunk hipsters. Thank you for helping me rebound. That being said, there are elements of Chelsea everywhere. The looks of the boys are no less constructed and some of them definitely have active gym memberships (oh yes, he did). And there were moments when the bar felt as poser-ish as Barracuda on a Saturday night. But it's a fun bar overall and, yes, a nice departure from The Usual Night Out In the Manhattan Gay Ghetto. I was a bit bothered by the lack of a coat check, especially as the friend of the hottie I got to know pretty well told us that someone's scarf had been stolen earlier. (Minus one star. I think this place is worth checking out because of the layout and the ratio of crowd to the allocated space. As mentioned with the reviews below, this seems to be a good meeting spot for hipsters of all kinds (yes, kids there are variations). Don't worry though, this place is welcoming and offers Galaga near the door, a pool table, and an outdoor patio for you smokers. Not many people can say an agnostic friend introduced them to Church. Only in New York... We went here after the Pride parade for free barbecue, and arived just in time for that. The place was packed with a rowdy yet polite crowd, mostly locals who were very welcoming to the nonlocals in our group. Prices were fair on drinks, and service was efficient. As we were finishing our food, the feaux-stained-glass windows went up and I experienced the weekly event known as Church. I'm definitely going back soon. read more

Of the many bars I went to on my frigid December visit to New York last year, Metropolitan was definitely my favorite. Turned off by the unbelievably high prices and snootiness of Manhattan gay bars, I held out hope that Brooklyn would prove more suitable for a broke and modest homo such as myself. These beliefs were affirmed at Metropolitan. The music was fun, the guys were nice and actually held conversations, and the prices were more reasonable (although still way too much...I think I paid $5 for a PBR...and they don't carry Miller Lite). Apparently there is an outdoor patio, but it was hovering around 10 degrees when I was there, so I did not get to experience this, but I would bet it's great in the summer. The only downfall was the presence of obnoxious hipsters. I saw someone draped in the typical hoodie/skull cap hipster apparel reading Homer's Iliad at the bar. I wanted to punch him in the face. I've only been here once, and it was a fun once. That might have a little something to do with the sweet karaoke on Tuesday nights (not sure if they do it any other nights), but I'm willing to bet it's a good time any night of the week. It's super chill and laid back, a cool place for the gay & lesbian crowd in Williamsburg and their friends. Stopped by The Metropolitan on a Saturday night to see what was up. Its a cute dark little place. There is the bar and a pool table set up in the front room. As you walk towards the back area, there is a small lounge area with seating and Galaga. Further back is a large smoke filled outside area where everyone seemed to be congregated. The crowd consisted of 20-30 year old, and I hate to use the word, "hipsters"; mostly men, a few hags, and a couple of lesbian couples sprinkled in. While we sat and sipped our drinks, the music was comprised of rock and a few r&b hits, no one was dancing. Nice place to stop by for a drink, but not my cup of a tea when it comes to gay bars. read more

This place is so fun! As a a fruit fly to a slew of gay men, my boys always take me here for fun filled hangouts. Everyone is really welcoming and it's a mixed crowd of gay/straight people. Their Sunday "BBQ" (which I would moreso call "cookout", because as someone who grew up in the south, there is no smoking of meat or BBQ sauce involved so it does not get to be called a BBQ) is always great in the summer. They taper those off to end in early fall. Used to be completely free, now you have to buy a drink and get a token in order to partake of the food (which is understandable). Metropolitan reminds me of The Tube in Portland, OR: jammed packed with hipsters of all shapes, sizes and orientations and great music to shake your stuff to. I'm only subletting in Williamsburg for less than a month, but I am totally returning to Metropolitan no matter where I end up. Tuesday was Karaoke night with a KJ that looks like a shorter version of Marissa Tomei. She is so adorable with her nonchalant way of introducing singers. Her style is impeccable and you gotta love a girl that isn't afraid to sing some Britney. Wednesday was girls/lesbian night and was still fun. There were lots of boys to dance and flirt with, although my group was stuck with a cockblocker. Good thing he's out of the picture now. Cocktails are served in thimbles, I swear, which was why I stuck to beer. My rommate said the mixed drinks were strong regardless of the size of the glasses, and I'll have to take his word for it. The pluses include an outdoor patio and relatively cheap drinks . Unfortunately the patio is overrun with smokers even in the non smoking section so it's not enjoyable at all. The place needs some help in the bartending department, although nice guys, I think they need maybe a barback or something or a bartender that can do the job so to speak. The bar itself needs to be wiped down and have glasses cleared as do the tables. Not good when bartender is texting and chilling when the place looks a mess and the customers elbows get wet from spilled drinks on the bar. honestly should be rated lower but extra star is for gaydom. Taking away a star because the place smells like piss and the last time I was there the asshole bartender overcharged me and put drinks on my tab that weren't mine. I think he thought I was drunk but I was sober and buying drinks for my friends. Let me start by saying that I LOVE Brooklyn, and love this little places here and there, but Metropolitan is for the the hipsters even-though is in such not good-looking area... Like most places in Brooklyn, decor is not their main thing. This place looks like most dive bars in the whole NYC; but its charming outdoors and the Brooklynites gays is what make this place fun and/or special... oh, and lets not forget the cheap food and drinks! Metropolitan is definitely a locals bar in Brooklyn. It reminds of a place in Puerto Rico where they have a juke box for music. For a Thursday night, it seems to be quite crowded. However, the crowd seemed to be very hippie, but also very mixed too (gay and straight). Lots of the men were wearing tight jeans. There was a pool table in the front that was dominated by this straight couple. The fat bouncer was very merry swaying side to side to the bumping music. It was very amusing! read more

Metropolitan, you are THE ONE. I purposefully waited until warmer weather was upon us to write this review--because I am a sucker for a large outdoor patio--but Metropolitan is great year-round. I hate crowded bars, which, welcome to New York, is almost every bar. But with the opening of their patio, the place doubles in size, which means you don't have to be worried about being shut out on weekends. I love their 2-for-1 happy hour, but this place gains most of my respect for not being completely cruise-y. Finally. Minus 1 star, however, for perhaps one of the scariest bathrooms. And sometimes I either have really strong drinks, or totally weak ones. I've been to Metropolitan before. But it's in Brooklyn, so I put the review off on purpose. The first time I was here, it was a really weird date. But the outdoor patio? Actually helped to make it less weird. It really is disarming how cozy and non gay bar-sy it is out there. This past weekend, since it was right next to the L train (really, very convenient) Alex P. wanted to stop in for a drink (that become two). A little bummed out that once you're not drinking beer, they charge Manhattan prices. But... I guess that's Brooklyn for ya. If you are going to drink here, beer all the way. It's really quite affordable. They also get bonus points for having both a pool table (really, they are much harder to find in gay bars than you think) and a working photo booth (making this the only other one besides 9th Avenue, I believe). The choice of music on a Saturday bordered on bizarre, but the crowd is not super concerned about leaving the house and not looking tragic, so it made my night kind of low key. Came hear trashed and ready to party. Was my first time at a gay bar since I'm one of those gays who's "just not gay enough". It was disappointing. 2am on a Saturday night should have a place thumping. The music was drab. The crowd was pretty drab. Really clausterphobic type space in the backyard. The loud buzzing of people speaking in unison was frightening. I had to get outta there quick! Lots of gay boys but it didn't seem like the crowd differed in any way. Hipsters. Scum bags. I love going to Metropolitan anyway, but I recently experienced my first Sunday BBQ out back. I felt like I was at summer camp. SO much going on - the grills running with hot dogs and hamburgers (which they were out of when I got there at 7ish), so much eye candy, neighborhood friends, music, it was a lot to take in. I much prefer it to a normal night there. That, combined with $2 beer - I'm sold. I agree with Phillip L. though - the sign that says tip accordingly, kind of off putting. We all get it. We know. Not that the bartender was EVER paying attention to us past 'whaddayahavin'. And the poker chips? I'm still a little confused. So first off, the only reason that I'm giving them 4 stars is because the lack of anything remotely close to a gay bar in a 10 block radius. Otherwise I would have just given them a modest 3. The place is cool. Fireplaces, four little loungy sections, huge outdoor patio, Jukebox and arcade games. Stopped by last night after dinner. My first impression is that there was an odor in the main room - not great. Modest crowd (Tuesday night) with most bellying up to the bar. Furniture sorta scattered about and there was spills on the floor. No real place to sit. Good music playing kept us there - had 2 rounds. Karaoke started and the first guy up was god awful so we left and went to Sugarland. The hostesses of the karaoke were sorta funny - in a good way.
