Disappointing and Overpriced..... I was anticipating the opportunity to eat here for over three weeks. This morning I finally had an opportunity to do so. To start with, the facility was clean and inviting. Seating was quick, as was the time between ordering and delivery of food to our table. So far, so good. Then reality. With regards to my order, I started with the favored coffee - French vanilla. The coffee tasted burnt and the vanilla flavoring did not come out until after the addition of 3 creams and a sugar. Although offered a refill during the meal, I declined. The corned beef hash seemed fresh, not out of a can. However, the corned beef was dry and over grilled. Then on to the "cheesiest grits." To start with, I think someone spilled the pepper shaker into the grits. Please allow us customers to season our own food. Also, if I am paying an upcharge for "cheesiest grits", that is what is expected. I received a bowl of white, over-peppered grits, with a dusting - not even enough to qualify as a sprinkling - of cheese on top - less than 1/2 teaspoon. Not blended or folded in; rather, more of a garnish. Actually, the best part of the meal was a sip of Coke from my dining partner's beverage. The price for my dining partner's and my breakfast was over $24.00 before tip. The coffee alone was $2.59!! For this level of price I certainly expect more. Would I go back? Probably not at that price for the value received, and not before I tried a lot of other places in town. read more

I had the beef tips and mashed potatoes! So good! My husband got the Mac & cheese & BBQ. It was pretty tasty-not as good as mine. My mom had shrimp and grits. Grits are fried in cake form- FYI. Very good, little on the spicy side but not overwhelming. Father got chicken and waffles and never slowed down eating. He said it was the best chicken he's ever had (which is saying ALOT). Was in Dothan for work, checked out Yelp for today's lunch place and came across Metro Diner. I always clarify with my sales people I'll pick a place but take no responsibility if they don't like it. We drove over to Metro and it was packed (good sign!). It was prime time for lunch and had a 10-15 wait, but it was worth it. While waiting, we were asked 3-4 times if we'd been helped (another good sign) and got our table for 2. It was explained that everything is made from scratch, looking at the dishes as they were coming out, portions are VERY generous and everything on the menu looked good. I got the chicken salad salad (although the Reuben sandwich was tempting and the chicken and waffles going by looked awesome!) and my cohort got the meatloaf plate. The chicken salad was delicious, couldn't finish it all, and it's a salad! My friend almost got through his lunch and while the desserts were tempting (apple cobbler! Come on...), has to pass. Stoped for lunch with my bride. She had the eggs Benedict and I ordered the chicken pot pie. Both were excellent. Couple next to us swore you cannot go wrong with the chicken and waffles or the Charleston shrimp and grits. Some many items on the menu look amazing. We just had lunch here...AMAZING SERVICE! I had a peach ya halla (or something like that) and I did not care for it. I did not say anything as to not complain. Our wonderful server told the manager. The interior space is clean, but not as warm and inviting as the outside gave me the impression it would be. I had the chicken pot pie and iced tea. The tea was good, but the pot pie fell short of the mark. The pot pie was served in an open faced oval dish. There was no bottom crust, just a top crust made of biscuit. This was okay, the biscuit topping had a good flavor. The vegetables in the pot pie filling were okay, but the filling was thin and overly salty. Was looking for a warm comforting pot pie, but got a half attempt. Seemed like something they do quickly rather than take the time to build the overall dish. I saw several breakfast items that looked good, so I'd recommend more for breakfast food, think of a nicer Waffle House. read more

Just moved to the area. I've visited one time before with my daughter and the food was great. Brought my husband for his first visit today. First: our waitress (Ondresha) was spectacular and deserves 10 stars. The pot pie my husband ordered was only the small size. It was huge! Great crust and filling! I had the avocado toast and mimosa. Should have asked for a smaller order of the avocado toast and if anything had cayenne pepper or spicy. I'm allergic to capsaicin and something had it. My mouth was on fire. I have eaten there 3 times. The first time it was amazing so a few weeks later we tried them again but the Ruben I ordered was nothing to write home about. Tonight I experienced the worse fried chicken I have ever eaten. It must have sat in salt water for a week and then they fried it to a dark brown on the verge of burning it. The older waiter with white hair was good but he served it. He got a tip but my tip to others is if you are a gambler eat at the Metro Diner. We weren't sure where to eat so we came to Yelp to find the highest rated places. Since it was right across the way we decided to try it out. We ordered the Mac Stack, the Bold Burger, and the Monti Christo. AND EVERYTHING we touched was delicious!! From the crisp onion rings to the mac-n-cheese to the burgers themselves. Metro Diner is incredible. The service is good, the food is excellent. It is a little expensive, so if you are expecting something comparable to waffle house or IHOP, this is not it. I Love Metro Diner. The chicken and waffles with the signature hot sauce and strawberry butter is my favorite. They give you so much chicken, and it's perfectly cooked. The staff is friendly and attentive. I love the hustle and bustle and cozy atmosphere. I think if I had to mention one think I wasn't fond of, it'd be the staff waiting to bus tables just standing about 2ft behind you the whole time. Accidents happen, but it still sucks walking in to the smell of burning food. The staff was awesome, super friendly! I ordered a Coke, the Monte Cristo sandwich and subbed the fries for a side salad. The sandwich was okay, but you could really taste the oil it was fried in. My coworkers ordered the Chicken Salad Salad and the Chicken Pot Pie. Loved the initial aesthetic of the restaurant, it has this sort of New York Diner feel. The wait time to be seated was brief and once we were seated we were helped immediately. The overall table experience was decent, though my group was seated outside. Food brought to our table was excellently presented and tasted like heaven. Absolutely fantastic! Went there for brunch after a friend of mine had been telling me how good it was for a while. We were very impressed with the food, atmosphere, portions, price, service, and overall dining experience. One of the best bloody Mary's I've ever had. Mimosa was also great. Ordered the shrimp and grits and it was unlike any shrimp and grits I've ever had. Grits are fried which sounded odd at first but I really wanted shrimp and grits so I gave it a try. I did not regret my decision. They were AMAZING. Portions were huge and it was so filling I could barely finish 1/3 of entree. Service was also impeccable. I had high hopes. All the food online looks great, the food that was up on the hot plate looked great, and the place was packed. I ordered a crab cake Benedict Florentine from the specials board. When it arrived it looked so blah. Just two Benedict's on a huge plate. No side of potatoes or anything. Plain English muffins. The crab tasted somewhat like canned crab. The hollandaise was watery and the menu said it had spinach. I had one spinach leaf between the two eggs. I ordered a side of bacon since I had zero sides just this sad looking plate. And a coffee. $26.50 after a 18% tip. Way over priced for what was on that plate. I don't mind paying the money but please dress that plate up. Add some spinach. Put a side on it. Very disappointed.
