Wanted to catch up with a friend over burgers, they chose this spot as their go-to for the neighborhood. No frills, just food. Not my favorite cheeseburger, but it's definitely a solid one and even better with bacon. They make their bacon crispy so it's almost like biting into a chip when you bite into your burger. Found this little gem in lower Haight through some local recommendations on the best food this side of the Bay. Wasn't disappointed! Fiance and I walked into this little eatery and were greeted with a smile from the gentleman and his son manning the till and grill. We ordered the fish n'chips and the mushroom steak sandwich. We sat down on a small table to the side of the entrance where we could feel the Bay breeze while we waited. Our food was brought to our table with the fixings very shortly after ordering. The food was fresh, hot and extremely flavorful. We enjoyed every morsel! The tartar sauce was fresh and tangy, fish was crispy and fluffy while the old English vinegar was delectably chilled and tart; the perfect accompaniment to fish n'chips. The mushroom steak sandwich was also a delight. It was served on warm toasted bread with melted cheese and quality cuts of mushrooms and steak. It's no mistake this place has been around for thirty years. We will be back to try more of the menu - wishing we could take a time machine back to when everything was served on fresh Amoroso rolls containing the original recipe of Randy Brewer. My wife and I were surprised when we walked it- it was quite small- but they had exactly what I wanted on the menu. I made a quick visit to meet a client in the Haight. And thanks to her and showing my fatigueness on my body, she suggested this small burger place along that busy intersection of Haight and Fillmore St. As small as this place, lack of any signs and the dark and nasty Saturday afternoon weather, I had trouble finding this place. Even with my company's cruiser, parking was also a nightmare too. Eventually, I did find parking after numerous trips around the neighborhood. This place is indeed small, with four indoor tables and two outdoors. With the nasty rain, who would want to eat outside? Looking at the menu posted on the board above the cashier and kitchen, the prices are quite reasonable; with all burgers, cheesesteaks and other sandwiches slightly priced under $7.00. The small restaurant also serve Garden and Boca Burgers for all you vegetarians. I had the #6, which is the "Blue Burger". My burger has Bacon, melted Blue Cheese and the usual condiment on your typical burger. All burgers including mine are made from Niman Ranch. Let me preface by saying I wasn't in the mood for a greasy cheesesteak after recently weighing myself, but I figured I'd find something on the menu that would work for me. The shop itself is easy to miss with a very small storefront and street presence. The shop has little room inside and is mostly kitchen with two tables and one high top table near the window. Luckily if you're eating in, there's additional tables out front great for people watching. The menu is simple and has five main sections: burgers, cheesesteaks, vegetarian options, hot dogs, fries and sides and appetizers. I went with the Hogi Cheesesteak which is grilled with onions, hot and sweet peppers, mayo, lettuce and tomato. Every cheesesteak comes with the option of steak or chicken. I chose the chicken option with a side of small fries. The cheesesteak cost me $8.95 for a small while the larger option runs for $13.95 and the side of fries cost $2.75. Considering it was the lunch hour, we were surprised at how empty the shop was and within 10 minutes I had my order. I have to admit that as soon as I was given my cheesesteak and fries, my mouth was watering. As I waited for my co-worker's sandwich to come out, I nibbled on the fries which were fried nicely and had a good crisp to them. Once I took a bite of my chicken cheesesteak, I was instantly hooked. The sandwich was piled high with chicken, grilled onions, hot and sweet peppers and plenty of lettuce and tomato. I'll admit that the sandwich was great, easily the best cheesesteak I've had in the city, but if I could change anything, I'd simply ask for no mayo. I was pretty skeptical about Metro Caffe but after giving it a chance, I can definitely say I'll be coming back on a regular basis. The menu has enough options that you don't need to be in the mood for a cheesesteak and their prices don't kill your wallet. Additionally, if you can split a large sandwich with someone, you'll save a few bucks and have more than enough food. I got a mushroom cheesesteak and tator tots. They friend their tators really well, perfectly crispy on the outside, yum! They were out of a frozen bag, nothing special but good. The actual restaurant doesn't have great seating options for big groups, 6 of us had to squeeze in two small tables and steal chairs from outside. They have a minimum of $10 charge on the credit card so remember to bring cash. I had the metro burger. The cook asks how you want the burger, and I had it well done. It comes with fresh lettuce, tomatoes between 2 buns. Pretty average but filling. However I didn't like paying $7.34 (with tax) for an average burger. I would give it a 4 stars but the burger was just alright. The cheese steaks looked really delicious. A regular cheese steak would be about ~$7.50-8 while a large cheese steak is ~$11.25. The large is definitely worth the money. A large gets you 2 regular cheese steaks. It's hidden at the bottom of the menu. Just order one large and split it with someone else!!! The allure of cheese-steaks was too much for him to pass up so he begged me to oblige. I'm not usually the hugest fan of cheese-teaks- I find the meat to usually be tough and don't get much thrill from peppers and onions. But, I am a good wife who compromises so we went in. I ordered the bacon and steak with cheese and no peppers or onions. The counter employee was friendly and helped us with our suggestions. He did not give me any grief for not wanting the peppers and onions either. My husband got a classic cheese-steak and we split an order of fries. The second the food was dropped I knew I was in for a treat. The sandwich was spectacular. The meat was finely chopped, which meant I didn't have to gnaw on dry, tough steak. The cheese melted perfectly and I loved the additional fat and smoky flavor the bacon added- which was finely chopped as well- perfectly. I gobbled down the entire thing and declared that if all cheeses-teaks were that good, I would eat them all the time.
