My friend and I took a leisurely walk and ended up here. I got the Metro Cheesesteak ($7.88). It was really good. The bread was fresh and delicious. The meat was perfect with great gooey cheese. The peppers were really spicy, but the onions and peppers were great. The only odd thing was that they were letting people behind the counter in the kitchen. They let one guy go back to wash his hands and another went back to talk. It was a little odd but who knows. We're talking deep fried tater tots and when I softly whispered my request for cheese to be added on top, the guy at the register shot me a knowing smile. I'm sure I couldn't have been the first to make such a request but after living in this city of organic goodness, I felt like I was entering into a processed cheese speakeasy. The burger was also tasty. I've walked down Church and eaten at Burgermeister and Metro Caffe is so much better. They asked me how I wanted my burger cooked and then they actually did it. This is a good place for a solid burger and fries. I liked the jalapeño burger. Had a nice kick to it and a goo crunch with the pickles. It's a pretty large size, about 5inches in diameter and 2 inches thick. The cheesesteak was good flavor. Wish the buns were a little more crunchy. Fries were lackluster but all around a good combo with any burger or cheesesteak. Their covid setup is really smart. They put the reader right next to the door and stand in the kitchen. Walked in here for the first time looking for a quick bite in a rush, and found myself sitting back and really enjoying a fantastic sandwich. I got a garden cheese steak (vegetarian), and it's easily one the best vegetarian sandwiches I've had in years - super cheesy and fresh veggie mix. Our noses told us there was something good in this neighborhood. Saturday, we were catching the scent while we waited for the 22. Looking around, we noticed that this neighborhood had a dozen restaurants. We couldn't figure out where that delicious smell was coming from. Sunday we returned to the corner, and started a door-to-door search. Metro Caffe came out the winner, and we took a seat at an outside table. I went up to the register and ordered a burger, medium rare, a cheeseburger, medium, two orders of fries and two fountain Cokes for $17.52. The cook/cashier/waiter brought a bottle of ketchup, and I went inside and fetched a bottle of mustard. It turned out the Niman ranch burgers were heavier than we thought -- they took the whole day to digest. It looked like there was a brisk business in take-out here, and the dining area inside looked limited. I think there were about 5 tables in all, counting the 2 on the sidewalk. So, the menu had tater tots on it, and My Lady was disappointed that I did not mention them. Their cheesesteak sandwiches seem to be as popular as the burgers. They have something called a boca burger, which is vegetarian if you don't count the fact that the grill is completely saturated with Mr. Beef. That's where the yummy smell comes from! read more

Metro is tiny. You can squeeze maybe 7-8 bodies inside before it starts getting.. weird? fun? It's in the lower haight after all. It's also kind of like a clown car now that I think about it.. nah. Metro is tasty. If you get a cheesesteak, to go, it's wrapped like a burrito. Some tin foil, a little paper wrapped around it with twirled ends and such. So, you're thinking, what the hell does this have to do with it being tasty? What, you don't like foil? Ok ok fine. There's plenty of melty cheese, yummy bread, good steak and veggies too. Watch out for the "hot" peppers in a few of them. This just means they load it with jalapenos. So what about the burgers? How should I know? A lot of other reviewers have vetoed them and I know plenty of other great burger places. So why blow off a great cheesesteak for a possibly not-so-great burger? Tater Tots. Potato parts mixed in with God knows what to create something magical. Even when they are baked in the oven, they are greased up and delicious. One time, in Humboldt, CA, for some reason I ate a whole bag at 4 in the morning. I guess people just get hungry there for some reason. Metro Caffe is a pretty teeny spot, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in flavor, specifically in the sandwich department. I personally love getting the mushroom variety of the cheesesteak. It's packed full of meat, melt-y cheese, and mushrooms. Normally it also comes with onions, but I'm not a fan so they leave them off for me. You can also get cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches. Plus they have tater tots on the side. And Welch's grape soda in the glass bottles! Since it is so small (I believe there are 3 or 4 tables that each hold 2 - 3 people) you are much better off ordering your food to go and eating elsewhere. After a hard workout of spin that resulted in raging hunger pangs, a couple of us wandered in to Metro Caffe for a big burger and fries. I was told to order the tater tots as a side but instead ordered the french fries which was a huge mistake. Don't get me wrong, the fries were great but the tots blew them out of their deep fryer oil! My friend ordered them and I couldn't help but snatching a few (or 10) off her plate; they were golden brown and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The turkey burger didn't disappoint either. It was the perfect size for my normally small appetite. Normally when I order a burger it's a battle of epic proportions to keep it all together; ketchup is dripping on to my fingers and arms, the burger is flailing about in the bun, and/or all the accouterments work there way out on to the table. Not last night. Last night my burger stayed neatly where it should be, only having to use my napkin for the corners of my mouth. The customer service definitely lacked something to be desired, though. When the cashier asked me if I wanted everything on it, I naturally asked what that entailed. One of the most entertaining parts about moving to a city like San Francisco is realizing how close things actually are to me. Before I moved here, I used to come up for a week of work and then stay the extended weekends to hang with friends and we'd pop all over town and honestly, I never really caught which way was up or down. As a result, when my friend and I both were hit with insane cravings for a Philly Cheesesteak, we walked up Fillmore and I suddenly realized that I'd had some super fun nights right along Haight and Fillmore and had no idea how close they all were to where I am living now! Sweet! Which brings me to Metro. Until yesterday, I'd never been there, but now knowing how close it is to some other favorites and my house for that matter, oh I will be back. We ordered the mushroom and cheesesteak and it is super tasty and definitely one of the better cheesesteaks I've had in SF. Trust me, there are some terrible knock offs out there in this city that aren't even digestible (*cough, Orphan Andy's*). Of course, it's not nearly as tasty as an authentic Philly Cheesesteak with the Cheese Whiz that I am still day dreaming about after eating several months ago, but for a within 4 block dining experience, it's some good grub. Not to be confused with the Metro Cafe on Divis (a nice French place), this is a straight-up solid grill joint. I personally am a huge fan of the turkey burger here -- it's healthy and delicious. Also, they do tater tots, which were not exactly my idea of a delicacy growing up, but absence maketh the heart grow fonder. Good, fresh ingredients grilled up nice. Just recently changed owners. I live right around the corner from here, and I am in here probably more than I should be. I am not a big fan of their burgers, to be honest-- the meat is just ok. However, I do enjoy their chicken club, with bacon and cheddar. They aren't stingy with the chicken. It's YUMMY. They also have tater tots, which sets them apart from other burger joints. How often do places serve tater tots anymore? MMMMM tater tots!! I also like their chicken tenders. Mmmm deep-fried foods. hahaha. Beyond that, I haven't tried their other things... Fantastic cheeseburgers. Perfectly crafted so I can actually eat them with my hands instead of having to go all Atkins & eat it with a knife and fork. Worlds away from the overrated Burgermeister & cheaper, too. They also use Niman Ranch beef but never get any attention for it. Oh, and also, their veggie burgers are also excellently prepared. Those of us who have eaten one too many poorly cooked gardenburgers will appreciate this. It's served on a heartier bun than the meat and if you add avocado, you have yourself a yummy corpse-free meal. The space is tiny but they pack the to-go food really well so the bag is actually not dripping with grease by the time you get to your destination. The best part? Crinkly fries. You heard me. Diet coke has been a serious love in my life for as long as I can recall. I HATE regular coke- get that crap away from me. I can't remember a time in my life before the good ol DC was king. True, it's not eeexactly the healthiest, most natural beverage one could choose. But JESUS CHRIST. IT IS THE ONE EDIBLE THING IN MY LIFE THAT I TRULY LOVE THAT ISN'T FATTENING SO LAY OFF. I blame my mother. As I've consumed a ridiculous amount of Diet Coke in my life and as result (besides probable future brain tumor) I've become a bit of a connoisseur of the beverage. Similar to wine fiends, I have a heightened perception of the varieties of flavor that can be found in my beloved artificially sweetened beverage. I say this as an expert- the best diet coke comes from a fountain. Yes, the FOUNTAIN Diet Coke is Lord over the can and (blech) the bottle. So, while I love San Francisco, its crippling flaw is that most of the restaurants here do not have soda fountains. I've grown accustomed to the can and cup of ice, but not fond. Metro Caffe gets an automatic 5 stars from me because they have a soda fountain dispensing the most delicious Diet Coke blend I've tasted on this coast, just down the street from me. In big cups and free refills. All the better for washing down a seriously yum chicken cheesesteak. Or should it be cheesechicken? Whatever. This place is good. You can get a burger (niman ranch!) and fries here for ~$6.50, which is pretty good considering that Burger Joint two blocks down the street won't let you get away with that for anything less than $8. And I like Metro's fries better. They also have turkey burgers that are ok and cheesesteaks that are totally mediocre in my opinion. I'd say stick to the burgers and you'll be happy. read more

I've eaten here twice now. Once, on my own, on my way to class, I deviated from the norm, took the 71L and risked life and limb on the bus among a bunch of punks just to get at the sandwich. Oh wait, no I lied. I actually took the 21, got off at Filmore, ran down here, ordered and then ran back to the 21. because if I'm going to be eating a whole chunk of tube steak, I better get some ex-er-cize in my legs. Hot sauce + mushroom Cheesesteak = reason to live. For now. I have learned, through the years, and after many feeling sick afternoons, that I cannot eat a whole order of fries by myself. So I didn't have that until I tricked the BF to agreeing to cheesesteak for dinner. It was actually a trick so I could order some mozzarella sticks and eat them all before the bus arrive. I nearly succeeded but it was not the same as THE fried cheese. The one that makes my heart beat. The orders of cheesesteak are huge. brimming. Terrific.
