I called to get a refund before the trip because I did feel safe being dropped off there. I was told they would get back to me in 3 to 5 days regarding a refund. No surprise no refund. I decided to fly into Omaha and rent a car to drive up to Yankton [great call on my Budget Rent A Car who suggested I upgrade to a hybrid. My gas bill was under $25 and drove over 300 miles]. Anyways, I need to get to Chicago where a I was getting a ride into Fort Wayne IN with one of my fellow meeting attendants. I found that the MegaBus was the cheapest way to get there. I had read a lot about the service and had once sent my son from Riverside CA to Las Vegas to catch his flight to school. For $20 I had a very comfortable run [I took the redeye which leaves Omaha at 10 pm and gets to Chicago at 7 am]. The ride is comfortable, there are plug ins, WiFi [although very slow] and clean bathrooms on board. The drivers were OK and I was glad I spent the extra $3 bucks on getting a premium down stairs seat. I actually picked a table seat so I had my iPad and iPhone hooked up and charging. Most people around me slept and snored away for most of the drive. I could not sleep but that was more me than the ride. There were a few oddballs on board but most of them were in the cheaper upstairs seats. If I had one complaint is that the pick up area has no signage or info to let you know where to pick up the bus. Luckily, while I was returning my rental car an hour earlier, I saw another MegaBus stop at a very nondescript bench so I knew where to go. Otherwise, I could have been walking around a mall, all night long. I tried looking online but I could get anything more than the Mall. Not, the southbound side of whatever near the parking lot. They should invest in a few signs!!! I would definitely ride this again.

We took it on a Saturday morning to get our haircuts. There was some planning involved as the barber shop is in Little Bohemia. Looking at the ORBT schedule and bringing our bikes, I timed it so we didn't have to wait long at the 42nd street stop. The bus was right on time! There are real time touchscreens at the bus stops, indicating where your bus is enroute. Also, it shows how many people are on the bus approaching. How cool is that? The bike racks are convenient and can be accessed through the last door on the platform (look for the bike symbol). There are 6 racks where the bikes are stood on end.

When we asked the bus driver why we couldn't pay for two rides with the app he started being very gruff and told us to get off the bus or he'd call 911. Very unnecessary. The ORBT kiosks never accept credit cards; I assume it's because of constant network issues. Speaking of network issues, their wifi is abysmal. You'd be lucky to load their homepage, let alone use the wifi for anything useful. all in all just awful And disappointing.

I saw video reviews so I decided to try Coach because of the reclining seats and room they provide. I think it would be great for a day trip but if you are going farther like we did, spend the extra money and get a room. It was pretty tough to sleep in the reclining seats for 24 hours. The nice thing is you can get up and move around the train. We went to the observation car and the café car. We didn't get a chance to try the dining car because you have to have a reservation . Those with a room get first choice. The view was gorgeous when we got to the mountains. It was also cool to see the little towns. The lady down in the café, was super sweet and very informative the rest of the staff was fair on the train. The people in the station were very friendly. If you're not able to eat at the dining cart, I suggest bring your own food. Our train ran two hours late and I only bought snacks and drinks. The food in the café is all bagged microwave food. It's good for something fast but if you want a real meal and you're not able to get off it, it gets old. We were able to stop in Denver for about 30 minutes and go to the Whole Foods, which was great. But other than that because our train was running late we didn't have very many stops to get a quality meal. All in all if you have the time and the money, the train is a really fun option. We do plan on taking a day trip and getting a room for our next long trip.

I did prefer the Chicago trip, because the dining car and snack car are available during the trip, and the view from the train is beautiful. There is a sightseeing car but even just in the coach seats - the windows are so big. The train is a little shabby but the seats, legroom, overhead storage - all this is SO MUCH better here than on a plane. The nighttime trip to Denver was kind of a drag since you just need to go sit down and try to sleep. Dining and snack cars closed for most of that trip. We only traveled coach, I hear the sleeper cars are nice, but they are expensive. Meals are included for sleeper cars. For coach, you can pay to eat in the dining car. It's a little expensive but it's fun and I liked the food and LOVED the staff there. Amtrak is notorious for not running on time. The issue is that they don't have their own tracks. Therefore they don't have priority usage of the tracks if there are any problems with the freight trains. We just don't have a passenger rail infrastructure in the US anymore, which is too bad. So the routes and schedules for Amtrak are very limited. I haven't been in the Omaha station. The hours are weird, because the schedules of the trains in Omaha are around 11pm and around 5am. We didn't need to go in the station because we had bought tickets online and we could just get on the train. There's no security line, and you can bring food and drinks etc with you. Or pretty much anything, but check to make sure because some things (like electric skateboards) are not allowed. And other things (like bikes) might require an extra fee. The train does not seem to be accessible in regard to mobility issues, but maybe accommodations can be made. I don't know how parking at the station works. We live in the Old Market so we just walk to the station. I loved both our trips, but definitely preferred the daytime one to Chicago. The nice thing about the nighttime trip to Denver is that it was like having an extra day of vacation, since night travel wasn't stressful and we kind of dozed off and on during the journey. And it's great to arrive at the station in the city downtown rather than at an airport far away. We just got off the train and walked to our hotel.
