Gene is one of the best bodyworkers (THE best actually) I've come across in my 30 years as a tennis player and coach. I've been training with Gene of Methodology for 18 months. I highly recommend him. I originally went to Gene for physical therapy due to quadricep tendinopathy (a micro tear in the tendon where the quad meets the knee). This was caused by overuse and by poor form in a variety of activities that I was doing at the time. I came to Gene after several years in CrossFit. I enjoyed a lot about CrossFit (and may go back to it) but I wasn't a natural at some of the weight lifting moves. First Gene created a custom training plan for me that was "functional". He created an exercise, massage, and stretching program that was targeted at improving activities I did day to day. In my case running, skiing, tennis, and weight-lifting. Upon embarking on this Gene saw right away is that my form wasn't great with weights - especially in deadlift, squat, and kettlebell swings. I sort of knew this from feedback from my CrossFit coaches, but there is only so much they can do in that group setting. Getting personalized instruction from Gene really helped me break through this. After 18 months I'm happy to say that this has been a great success. I feel overall much stronger in all of my activities. The micro-tears are still there in my quads, but I now understand that poor form, lack of flexibility in certain muscles, and a weak core were large contributing factors in my situation. Gene diagnosed these things with me and has given me a variety of tools to address issues as they come up in my daily activities. I now understand how to stretch and warm-up, and how to use the right set of muscles. In addition to training Gene is also a great sports massage therapist. Inevitable I have still had aches and pains from long runs, big ski days, or intense work-outs. In these cases having Gene address things through massage has yielded much faster recovery times than I would have otherwise had. And again it has also taught me a set of tools that I can use myself - eg knowing how to use a roller, lacrosse ball, or even park bench to work out muscle tightnesses. Gene is the best massage practitioner I have ever had. That's the reason I've stayed with him for more than 10 years. Because he is a personal trainer and dancer, as well as a licensed massage therapist, he understands muscles, ligaments, joints, and how things are connected and how the body moves in a way that most masseuses don't. Gene's intuition and touch ended pain I had been living with for 17 years. When I was pregnant with my first child, I injured my hip while creating a backyard garden. I've always been quite active, going to the gym and eating healthy, but for all these years the pain would come and go. It got worse with each of my pregnancies. I saw personal trainers to try to strengthen my muscles and massage therapists to relieve the pain, but nothing seemed to work. While working a very physical job at an animal shelter, I tore and re-tore my meniscus every day for three months, causing the cartilage to become frayed. Over the next two years, I had two knee surgeries, countless cortisone and glucosamine shots, and two rounds of physical therapy. Though my surgeons were excellent and solved the problems in my meniscus, during recovery I developed severe pain in three separate areas of my knee. Not wanting to put me through a third surgery, they recommended going to a pain management center. However, I was in my mid-twenties and enjoyed a very physical career and lifestyle, and the idea of being on heavy pain medication for the rest of my life was not a path I wished to go down. A week later, my sister in Seattle told me about her incredible experience with Gene: after one visit, two decades of her chronic pain had been fixed. She was so effusive in her praise that I flew literally across the country, from Eastern North Carolina to Seattle, to seek out his help. His help started before we even met face to face. The day before I flew out, we talked over Facetime so he could view my movements in order to understand what he was dealing with and start preparing a plan for me. Within a single visit, he had pinpointed the causes of each kind of pain I was feeling and told me this was a fixable problem. He even thought out of the box and came up with the idea of protecting my knee with a hard knee pad (like the kind you use for roller skating) so I couldn't hit it while I slept -- something that had been a huge problem and had kept me awake at night for months. He showed me how to move in my daily routine so I could sit, stand, bend, and walk without pain. After only about two weeks of the exercises he showed me, I have already begun to feel my severely atrophied quad muscle growing stronger, relieving much of the pain. His dedication to solving the problem, creativity in coming up with solutions, and knowledge of how the body should move changed my life.
