It's been 4 days and I am STILL not over this burger. Long live smash burgers! First of all, Mess Hall does such an amazing job with presentation - I mean just LOOK at these pictures. It just takes one bite to believe in true miracles. The juicy burger patties, buttery buns, creamy sauce, and the crunchy onions all marry together in your mouth while also somehow keeping their individual identity. The experience is overall truly incredible. Each burger/sandwich comes with a side of tots and I really went crazy here ya'll - I ordered my tots "Scott's style". Picture this - crispy tater tots topped with cheddar, pickled onions, chipotle mayo, green onions. You can also order Scott's style tots as an individual item with bacon and a chopped patty or fried chicken. I set out with all intents and purposes to only eat half of this cheeseburger but I must admit, I failed miserably and I have a feeling you will too. Mess Hall is a must try! read more

RUDE! I ordered Tater Tots. TOTS! And it took nearly 40 minutes during a non-busy afternoon. FORTY MINUTES! An individual at the window basically threw my order at me. I asked why it took so long and he scowled and said they were busy and then slammed the window shut at me. Hate to see this place if it was busy. So rude! read more

It's an interesting spot. Lots of picnic tables outside! Craft beer. Limited menu and only tots as side, but food is good. Breakfast stuff till 11am. Only open till 9pm, it's Wilmington... *they need to explain it's "come to counter and order" type of place to newcomers read more

Mess Hall will forever be my favorite burger joint here in Wilmington! I love their burgers so much and love the fact that their new location is right next to a dog bar! I am always surprised on how fast the food comes out even on a busy night. My mom and I both got a burger with some tots and my dog got a plan patty. The service is a little slow for not being very busy when we went, but the burgers are really good. The tots are great, Im so glad they were not over-salted like many tots tend to be. The ambiance is cute, I didnt care for the flimsy plastic chairs however. Worth a trip though, for sure! read more

We love a great smash burger and have heard great things so decided to give Mess a try. Overall our meal was good but didn't quite live up to the hype. A few things that surprised me were they don't have ranch or onions which are two common components of a burger joint. My cheeseburger had onion straws when I ordered raw onions and I found that to be odd. Also, the kids chicken 'tendies' were good but definitely a lot for kids to manage and the breading just flaked off. The tots were fried just right but if you want fries or another side you're out of luck. That didn't bother us because we all love tots but if you're not a fan you'll be disappointed. read more

First off know that this isn't a self standing restaurant location. It's apart of a neat idea concept which has multiple different locations inside of the building all sharing one common space. The food is always decent but the chicken and vegan sandwich are both major standouts among the menu. There is not one complaint I could say against my chicken sandwich and definitely make sure you order some of the secret sauce on the side! What's cool about the common area is it does have a mini bar which you can grab a quick drink to enjoy along with your food. There's also a coffee shop located on the property as well! The reason I rated it only four out of five is because even though the concept is nice...the dining hall feels like a high school and the noise became unbearable due to it being a small space. Outside seating is not much better either. Food is good, drink situation is interesting but atmosphere could be much better. read more

I am not sure there are words would do it justice. The food was amazing. The burger... wow. I see why on some sights they are in the top 3 for NC. The atmosphere was great. Parking was tricky, because so many were going in and out. The staff were friendly and cheerful. There is grassy areas to sit when they have entertainment. I would go back in a heart beat. read more

By far one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. If this is your first time, this space is similar to a little food hall, quite awesome and IG-worthy! The Burger Place is located in the back, quite hard to find if it's your first time. The only reason I knew was because of a neon sign that said, "burger". I asked for their most popular burger and decided to go with that one. It took a little while to receive my food but the burger came out super hot! 1-Star off for the cold tater tots. That was the only disappointing part. It was crispy but cold. Other than that, the burger was a hit! It was so juicy and flavorful -- my type of burger! read more

wait was a bit long, but we did go on a friday night. food was pricey for the portions served, ambiance is very millennial (not in a bad way). the "chicken sandy" was pretty good but needs more hot honey. the smash burger was good also but needed pickles. overall service was good and we enjoyed our time! read more

My wife and I visited the Mess Hall today for National Cheeseburger day. It was our second visit to the new location. We had previously dined at the old location on 16th street a number of times. I'm not sure what motivated the change of location, but I think a great deal was loss in the change of venues. The old place was a much more comfortable dining experience (inside or outside). The ordering routine and order pick up process is not a smooth operation and adds to the sense of longing for the way things used to be. The burgers are a greasy, gooey, pile of goodness, but something is missing from the old experience. Oh... another thing, we ordered a couple of their new milkshakes. They were great but they were also made and served to us 10 minutes before our food was ready. Disappointing lunch today...sorry. read more

This place lives up to the hype! Great vibe and delicious food. The cargo district is trendy with industrial structures (container structures) and has a open and shared dining. There are multiple seating options, inside and out, upstairs and down. The food is really good... fresh made orders. We tried the Samburger, Scott's tots w chicken, and the kids tender meal. All were freshly made and came out hot. The burger had two thin patties with crispy edges that were delicious! The mess sauce had horseradish and was really good. This burger was a tad on the salty side, with the beef patties, bacon and both caramelized and fried onion, but the flavors were delicious. I would probably split it next time. The tots were yummy... the sauce w Scott's tots was really good, and the pickled onions really brightened it and added texture. The tenders were seasoned and cooked to perfection. Overall, a great addition to the downtown Wilmington food scene! Will be back! read more

Incredible food, I have come here multiple times but in my last visit they were celebrating an anniversary. They were doing a promotion where every 25th customer gets their meal for free and me and my friends were the 150th order. They always have fun things like that going on and the service is incredible. The bartender with a bunch of old fashioned tattoos was so disrespectful. I simply asked what type of beers are light and he gave me so much attitude. He left me at the bar and skipped me for 20 minutes. He is not one to be in costumer service. Do not come here for a chill beer at the bar. read more

OMG, I wish I could give this place 6 stars. Their food is AB-SO-LUTE-LY AM-A-ZING! I was skeptical at first because they really don't have much on their menu, but what they do have, they knock it out of the park. The inside is cool and they have a nice seating area outside that is great on days where the weather is nice. The service was friendly. There was a bit of a wait but they were busy and the food tasted so fresh. Hands down, one of the best burger places in town. read more

I was driving into our Wilmington office this morning and saw the flags for Mess Hall. I had already asked coworkers about lunch so we decided to give it a try. It's like two food trucks joined by a common seating area. The ambience was fun. Some covered seating, some partially covered and some seating in full sun. We ordered - think food truck menu and went to sit with group. It took 15 minutes for the first group to get their food. We ordered at 12:17 and 40 minutes later we received our food. They weren't that busy, it was steady. It's burgers, tots or chicken. I just don't understand 40 minutes. And tge burger was meh. Nothing special. Tator tots I can get from the grocery store with ketchup out of a packet. Hopefully it was a fluke. I'll try it again and update my review. read more

We used to give Mess Hall 5 stars in its old location. What's changed? Prior location - more ambient space isolated from the road and cars. New space - open, little to no ambiance, right on the street prior location - music and entertainment. New space - none There's much more they could have done here. The food and drink are good. I'm hoping they do something to improve the overall experience. read more

Located smack dab in the new / old hipster district. A burger joint with a twist. A big twist. Which makes it a fun place to stuff your face. Tater tots, pickled grilled onions and a high quality smash burger unite on one paper tray, smothered in a secret sauce look alike. Bring a friend. Because if you care about your svwelte figure. You are going to need help. It took me two days. Yes leftovers. Yes, still good and definitely yummy. I cannot see going there once a week. Oh the scales....and possible heart palpatations, but if you are sick of the venerable and also awesome P.T.s Burger...take Mess Hall for a spin. read more

Totally worth the wait - came in at noon on a Saturday so there was a long line. But we grabbed a beer from Alcove and waited in the socially distanced line with our masks. The waitress warned us that it would be 30 minutes for our food even before we ordered. When the food came everything was delicious. We got the Scott's tots and old fashioned burger. I loved the flavor of the burger with the crunchy burger ends. Super flavorful and I loved the tots! Great spot if you're not in a rush and want to relax with good food. read more

This was my 1st time here...The food was delicious and the mixed drinks were amazing. The Mess Hall was crowded/busy. Probably would be a good idea to get a bigger grill bcuz' this place is off the hook/chain....GAS! The food is Lit Whatever the term that people use to say ...it is amazingly delicious!!!! I'm the St. Louis visitor in the group, here to be educated on what Southern cooking is supposed to taste like. The verdict by the end of the night was mixed. The space itself is cute and clean, with an industrial-chic, open feel inside, but it gets very loud once it fills up, like hard to hear your side neighbor loud. We lucked into a set of club chairs in a corner away from the main dining area, which knocked the noise down enough that we could hear each other. Without that, I'm honestly not sure we would have stayed. The host didn't blink at seating us over there, and the wait staff throughout the night was friendly. Drinks were fine across the table. My grilled peach old fashioned was the only one I tried, and I was hoping for a sharper, smokier profile, what I got leaned peachy without much else going on. The clams my friend ordered had a little grit in them, so not perfectly cleaned, but the flavor was there. The six-hour baby back ribs was a great start, great sauce, not smothered, fall-off-the-bone tender, the kind of thing I'd come back for. I didn't get a photo because we tore into them too fast, which tells you most of what you need to know. After that, things got uneven. The pork empanadas are listed with an ancho chili jam, but no jam or sauce came with ours. The pastry was crisp and tasty, but the pork inside was under-seasoned, and we left a whole empanada on the plate. The crab cakes was the bigger letdown, my friend, who grew up in Maryland and knows what a crab cake should be, said hers tasted more like a flat, minced patty (possibly with fish filler) than actual crab. She didn't finish it. My gumbo ya-ya had chicken, shrimp, and andouille, but the sauce was thin and tomato-forward where I was hoping for, and a richer sauce. Spice was fine; the whole thing just landed middle-of-the-road. Desserts split the difference. The key lime crème brûlée was genuinely excellent, I'd order it again on its own. The North Carolina blueberry bread pudding was beautifully plated but a little dry in execution for use. We left half of it. One thing worth flagging: the restaurant closes at 8:30, and at 8:30 sharp, with us still finishing dessert, the music came on with the unmistakable "we're closed" energy, even though we'd arrived at 7 and no one else was wandering in late. It made the end of the meal feel rushed in a way that didn't match the otherwise warm service. 3.4 starts out of 5. To be fair: we didn't leave feeling the food was bad, just that we'd ordered into the weaker half of the menu. Our server highly recommended the skillet mac and cheese and the quesadillas, and the skillet cornbread looked great online - we just didn't pull the triggers. We have generous optimism a version of this meal that goes much better than ours did, and on a second visit I'd lean into those recommendations. For now, though, with friends in town and a list of places I haven't tried yet, I probably won't be steering people here for your one night in Wilmington. I'd come back to give it a fairer second shot if I lived here.
