I'm a cheesesteak snob. I didn't think that I was until I got a cheesesteak from Merritt Sub last night. For a couple of years, Jeremy and I have been going to Philly and trying some of their more famous sandwich shops. It's been great fun and I'm not going to stop, but I didn't expect that my local shops would fail so horribly when I needed something meaty, cheesy, oniony, quick. I've been eating Merritt Subs for a decade. Though, yeah, I lean more towards Captain Harvey's. Merritt has always been a solid second choice. I should have noticed something was up when all the older gentlemen customers leaving with their orders in hand were carrying pizza boxes and nothing else. I should have taken my gut instinct seriously when Jeremy put our order in the passenger seat and it didn't smell right. It didn't make me salivate. It made me wonder why I couldn't smell the onions or anything else that would have made my stomach start instantly growling. But it's a cheesesteak, how could it possibly not satisfy? I got a cheesesteak, American cheese, grilled onions and mayo. It took me at least 20 minutes of fixing up my sandwich, reheating it, etc before I got it to taste like anything. My first issue is that the roll is too soft. By the time we got our meal home, which is like 7 minutes away, the bottom of the roll was a soggy mess. Yet somehow, the mayo didn't help the moisture or the flavor of the meat. Do they not season the meat? They clearly do not season the onions, which are all smashed to one side of the sandwich, instead of being mixed in with the meat. This gives the meat additional sweetness and a juicier texture. I couldn't even tell that there was cheese on it. I added more mayo, sandwich hots, mixed the meat with the onions and then microwaved it to harden the bread (and warm the meat). Then, for the first time, I understood why some of my friends get ketchup on their cheesesteaks. I have always thought that was so gauche, so juvenile. But it was necessary in this case. And if people grow up their entire life eating sandwiches like these, that don't have any flavor unless you add something aggressive like ketchup, then how do they know properly made cheesesteaks (sandwiches that shops are proud of) don't need it? Jeremy struggled to eat his and he's the biggest carnivore I have ever met. However, the chicken wings were fried to perfection and delicious without any sauce, which was great because Merritt Sub didn't provide any sauce (even though we ordered buffalo wings), left the wings naked, and didn't even give a bleu cheese or ranch packet. I also got an order of fried mushrooms that were neither here nor there, but the reason I had ketchup (and horseradish sauce, both from my own fridge) nearby to adjust my sandwich. Thing is, I'm sad. I love cheesesteaks. I don't want to have to travel several hours to get one that satisfies. I don't want to give up on my local shops. But I just can't afford to spend $50 on a meal that takes that much effort on my part to make enjoyable. Please, Merritt, step up your game. Toast the rolls. Mix the onions in with the meat. I went here for a late lunch and I was not disappointed. Truly your typical hole-in-the wall spot. I do recommend calling your order in ahead of time if you are able as my meal took about 20min to prepare after ordering in person. While I was waiting for my food, this place got busy very quickly. This place is run by 2-3 people at a time and all of the staff were friendly as well as welcoming. I appreciate that the woman who was running the grill and preparing orders would wash her hands after handling money. I ordered a cheesesteak with American cheese and everything on it as well as the chicken wings and fries combo. The sandwich was delicious and overstuffed with meat/toppings. The chicken wings were extra crispy just the way I like and the fries were your standard French fry. I did put hot sauce on my wings when I got home as they did provide me with ranch dipping sauce to go with the wings. All in all, I'll definitely stop by again when I am in the mood for food. This place has great food, but there are too many times you try to place an order and the phones are off the hook busy! Then it takes longer for them to make the food than they say. Holy cross contamination!! Workers touching raw meat then lettuce. Wiping their gloved hands on their dirty clothes then touching food. Watched a lady pick up raw mushrooms with her hands and put it on the grill. She then picked up raw bacon and threw it in the fryer. I ended up here by mistake when ordering a pizza from Filetti's, it turns out they are kinda the same. They are all Filetti's family and the Merrit Sub is the original. They have been in business at the same location for over 40 years. you don't enjoy that kind of longevity without doing it right. I tried the pizza, the crust has a buttery crunch with a moist soft dough. The ingredients are always fresh and tasty. I love the pizza. The subs are pretty damn good here too. The cheeseburger sub is thick and juicy, the roll is quality. Quality indeed. They always have the O's game on the radio and the old man always says hi. I like this place. read more

First time ordering cheese steak subs from Merritt. After receiving a ridiculously small Ch Stk subs from Tony's pizza's new ownership, hardly any meat to where the roll was sunken in. Small roll with zero meat showing from the sides. Tony's pizza use to be our go to for subs and pizza. Not anymore since we found our new go to place. Deliciously seasoned packed overflowing with meat cheesesteak subs from Merritt Sub shop. Their cheesesteak subs are in comparison to the way Capt Harvey's "USE" to be. This is my absolute favorite pizza place. I've been going here since I moved to Dundalk in middle school about 10 years ago. I used to go to the library after school and I'd pick up a pizza for me and my sister, we would sit outside to wat it before hanging out at the library for a couple hours. Everything I've ever gotten here is fantastic. Merritt sub's pizza is my favorite pizza and their prices are fantastic as well, if you're in Dundalk and want pizza forget those silly chain restaurants and stop by here. Not only is the food phenomenal but the customer service is the best I've ever experienced both over the phone and in person. The owner always says hi and will ask how I've been or mention that it's been a while if I haven't been in a while haha. Everyone else is just as friendly, I've even been told to be safe when I come to pick up while ordering over the phone while its nasty weather outside.... Who else is that kind? No one, lol all other places just rush through your order, total you and hang up. Its impossible not to feel welcome when you walk through the door. My favorite things here are their pizza and mozzarella sticks, they've got the best marinara sauce I've ever tasted. So yea if you're ever in Dundalk and are craving pizza check this place out! Even if you're not craving pizza they've got stubs, burgers, and finger foods to just die for. Oh and their brownies are phenomenal as well. Consistency matters to me when ordering takeout, and Merritt Sub is consistent to a fault. The cheesesteak subs are, dare I say, almost too full; the brown gravy is typical but delicious; marinara served with mozzarella sticks is on point. I have also never received an incorrect or incomplete order. The biggest and only disappointment so far has been the consistently bad rice pudding. I'm not sure if it's always old, the recipe is just not good, or they need to change the canned brand, but should this one aspect of my consistent order inprove, Merritt could easily be a 5-star takeout joint. read more

The fries were burnt, the fish on all the subs was over cooked, the cheese was thick and not melted, the bread was toasted and the sub in general lacked flavor.
