I stopped in to get an oil change based on the coupon I received in the mail - my regular mechanic is typically very busy, a good sign for a mechanic. The vehicle has a leak and my mechanic, knowing that I don't plan on keeping the vehicle for much longer, suggested an unorthodox treatment. The guys at Merlin, after putting the vehicle on the rack, called me into the shop to tell me that they will not perform an oil change without fixing the leak their way - this after I told them I do not intend on keeping the vehicle long enough to even need another oil change. I told them to take the vehicle down and I left. Funny thing is, after I left, the vehicle is leaking more than it ever has and my check engine light came on. Having gone to Merlin in McHenry several times in the past two years I can say without doubt that Brad and his crew are fantastic to deal with. Brad is a working owner who takes an interest in his customers and explains every detail of their work and pricing. His staff make sure you actually see what the problem is, what they are doing, and the results so you know you're getting what you pay for. And if they can't handle something they admit it and will refer you to people who can. Of the mechanics I've had to deal with this is the first one in many years that I can say I never feel ripped off and that actually seem to care about the work they're doing. Service was fine but no one working wore a mask. Not wearing a mask in the shop if the others working don't care is one thing but at a time when new Covid cases are at an all time high, not to wear a mask in the lobby when dealing with customers or when in a customer's car is irresponsible. This is a special thank you to Eric G. at the McHenry IL location. He has helped me and my wife time and time again with our car. The overwhelming issues we had with our newly bought used car was set to nickel and dime us to death. However, with his exceptional level of knowledge, Eric was able to place a list of what was needed for our vehicle in a priority basis, thus allowing us to get the more important repairs done first, while keeping things on a very tight budget. There was a point that we even had a small issue with this location, but Eric was able to contact us personally, and go well over that of what i think any other shop would have done. He did everything in his power to make things right by us, the customer.... Went here today for a simple oil change. Manager came to me after about 20 minutes. Said I needed a new oil pan cause the plug was stripped and couldn't hold oil. To the tune of $600 plus labor I could get my cars oil changed. Called my normal mechanic. Said an oversized plug would work. Not according to Merlin. They even put the blame on my mechanic. BS. So after 100 tow. I got my oil changed at my normal place for about 30 bucks. No one should give the thieves at Merlin. 1 red cent. Highway robbery would be cheaper. Then to boot, with no oil in the car they drove it from the lift to a parking spot. Very bad. Even toe driver was a gassed read more

After trusting Merlin's for my car service for most of my adult life, they have finally given in to corporate greed. I had a oil change coupon that had the statement "standard oil filter. " I guess my car has a non standard cartridge type filter. So my coupon covered the cost of the standard one, but then I had to pay full price for my special filter. Nothing like paying twice for the same part and using 1. How can you trust a car service with costly repairs when they hit you up for $12.63 since you used a coupon. So long Merlin's, I guess I will be going to Midas since they honor coupons and not try to nickel and dime their customers. read more

I'm writing this review to warn customers about the service I received at Merlin in Mchenry. John the manager expressed how he would take care of my car and in returning my car, there was a dent and he said he would not fix it. My mustang is a show car and in pristine condition I barely drive it and I am literally disgusted and outraged that he would not take responsibility for their action! This establishment is a joke ! the mechanics don't know what they're doing and they're overpriced! Went to Merlin's muffler yesterday for an oil change on my truck.while I was waiting I noticed the technician adding fluid to my radiator and it was not the color that belongs in there. After questioning the manager what he had added to my radiator he replied it was a anti-freeze that mixes with any color anti-freeze. My truck takes a Motorcraft red in color from ford and they had added green that is not recommended . I question what they had done to the manager and he assured me that it could be mixed together. I felt uncomfortable so I called the ford dealer after I left and told them what they had put in there and they informed me Absolutely Not .what they had done was totally wrong and it can ruin my motor and cause major problems by mixing the two different chemicals together. I immediately called the manager and informed him what Ford had told me and he apologized and said bring it back they will flush it out. He also said he called the dealer and they formed him as well it could cause major major problems.I did return and they flushed it out and hopefully no damage has been done. Now I am wondering how many other customers cars they have done this to and they don't even know it.. I am sure there's other people out there that are going to have problems down the road with their vehicles if they are doing this to other vehicles. Lesson learned stay away from cheap oil changes where the technicians do not know what they are doing. From now on I'm only going to the dealer. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. I went to fix my brakes. A week later I went back because my brakes were bad again. They bled the brakes and few weeks later, went back again cause I almost had an accident cause I had no brakes AGAIN. Then they said that it might be brake hose and they wanted to charge me $194 after I paid $640, I said no thank you and I left. So I went to this mechanic and he said that whoever fix my brakes did a faulty job cause they just fixed just the driver side. Plus they charged me for rotors and they never put new rotors. Whether it be a standard oil change or something complex, these guys definitely take care of you and treat every customer as their best. I wish I could give zero stars because I would. The "techs" there couldn't align a grocery cart. I paid for a four wheel alignment and all they did was adjust front toe angle. I had just replaced a lot of alignment components including front inner and outer tie rods as well as toe adjustment bushings in the rear of vehicle. The rear toe adjustment was never brought into spec let alone even touched. This caused my rear tires to completely wear down to the steel belts within 2000 miles. Don't let these guys touch your car. True definition of HACK auto repair. read more

I dropped my vehicle off on 10-06-2015 before the shop was open. I left my keys in the drop box. I called them at 8:00 am when they opened and requested for an alignment to be performed. I got a phone call from charles the manager on duty to inform me the vehicle was ready for pickup but the Tech that did the alignment said the power steering fluid, as well as the transmission fluid needed to be flushed and replaced due to the color and age of the fluids. I told the manager that the fluids was replaced in the last 6 months for all three fluids by myself. I was then informed that my truck was ready when ever i was ready to come pick it up. I got off the phone and went to the shop to pick the truck up shortly after the call around 10:00 am. When I arrived at the shop charles was behind the counter with another person that had a blue shirt on. I asked the person with the blue shirt if he was a manager, his reply was yes. I then asked charles to excuse us for a minute which he did. I then informed Marshall Stitt the person with the blue shirt on of my issues being told the fluids need to be replaced when i had done them myself and had proof of this. I was then informed the tech may have made a mistake as well as the manager was new that the manager should have checked the fluids as well. I told him I felt I shouldnt have to pay the 49.00 for the alignment on the vehicle. I was then told that the alignment had nothing to do with the fluids why should he give it to me free. I said because your people are being unethical. I was then asked if it would be ok to pull the truck back in so we could look at the fluids. I agreed to this so Mr. Stitt pulled in my vehicle and at that time check all three fluids in my presence. I was then told by Mr. stitt that all three fluids were fine. We then went back into the office and he said he was sorry and told me he would not charge me for the service. I thanked him waited for my copy of all the paperwork. Mr. Stitt failed to give me records of the wheels specs for the alignment based on what they found. I was informed by Mr. Stitt at that time the toe on the alignment was good but the vehicle needed to have shims put in for the alignment to be 100%. I then asked him why I was called and told the vehicle was ready for pick up and about the fluids but failed to mention the shims at the time they called me to tell em it was ready for pickup. I was then informed by Mr. Stitt that he could not give me a reason why I was not told about the shims. I then thanked him and told him I was taking my vehicle some other place. read more
