They originally helped me out big time by finding a refurbished motor for my Subaru '18 Outback, and got it installed quickly for 40% of what the dealer wanted. Since then, I've had various minor issues with the vehicle including a tire pressure gauge, which required several visits before the problem was actually diagnosed and addressed. It was my first time here, what a great experience! Mark the owner was super friendly. I needed a bulb changed for my turn signal. I offered to go buy the bulb and asked what the charge was to replace it (this was all over the phone). He told me to just bring it in. The wiring housing came loose so they fixed that, put a new bulb in and sent me on my way-NO CHARGE! I would never expect free service anywhere and would not expect it from them again BUT, come on! I love this place as much as you can love getting car repairs done lol. Seriously though they are honest and fair pricing for repairs and even simple oil changes. Before Covid hot I was waiting for my cars oil change and heard many calls where they said it was only a slight adjustment so it's done no charge. This review is in regards to service performed in February 2016. As of now, this place seems to have overwhelmingly positive reviews. Although they are indeed nice at this place, I was ultimately not happy with them, however. The reason for going into John's was that several of the dash warning lights were on. Tire pressure was one of them, and they were able to diagnose that it was the spare tire pressure. Ok, no issues there. Other than that, they determined that the rest of the lights (ABS, etc.) were due to an issue with the mass air flow sensor. After determining this, they insisted upon performing additional services and tests to the vehicle in regards to the air flow because they "wanted to be sure the problem was truly the air flow sensor and there wasn't anything else going on with the vehicle." In hindsight, I should have pushed against that and simply had them replace the sensor, so that is on me. What makes this a two star review is that John's then proceeded to tell me that they had inspected the brakes, and that they needed to be replaced because they were at less than 25% life. I have a regular brake and muffler place that I use and trust, so I told John's absolutely not since they had already done so much work in regards to the air flow and that I was looking at a high enough bill for the day already, and that I would take it to my regular brake place. They didn't push too hard on this, but I thought it was odd that they recommended this brake work since I did not come in for brakes whatsoever, and they were not making any noise or tcausing any issues. Sure enough, I went into my regular brake place a week later, and they advised that the brakes were at least at 50% and did not need to be replaced at this time. So I am giving John's 2 stars because they are, indeed, nice. That "niceness" comes at a price, however, since they obviously just see dollar signs when you come in for other issues. When I was waiting in the lobby, I heard the employee talk to someone on the phone about their service and he literally said "well, I honestly couldn't feel good about having you leave without performing those extra services." Between this and the brake issue, it really left a bad impression that this place is really not honest, and is only looking to make as much money off of you when you step in the door as possible. I understand it's a business, of course, but if you are planning on using John's just beware of this be prepared to specifically indicate what services you want, and be ready to say "no" to all the extra stuff they will inevitably try to tack onto your bill. John's is the best. You can call them up over the phone and they will help you figure out what's wrong with your car. Just by the stupid car sounds you try making to explain why your car isn't working. You can tell them Johnny's down the road wants to charge you $XXX and they will beat it with a great price. I've also noticed that they still use higher quality products in their low quotes. You call them up at 7:30am on a Monday morning cause your car is on fire and they say "No problem! Bring it in!" Their customer service is like no other, their work is solid and actually lasts. If something breaks after they fix it, they fix it again, no charge. I have and old 1964 mower deck that needed some welding done. Called up asked if they weld and they said they could fit me in. The did a quick weld saving a 50 year old attachment. When I asked how much they said free. I came to pick it up talked to them and they outlined what they fixed. Knowing a bit about welding i know they did it the right way not the quick way. I worked in Wauconda for a number of years and heard of Johns Auto from some of the locals. I trusted my beloved Prius to these guys and I'll only be going back to the dealer for recalls. These guys did a hybrid inverter flush and traditional radiator flush for a fraction of the price of the dealer. He called within 15 minutes of dropping off my Silverado and told me the brakes were fine! My first time here. Had an emergency kind of situation with an awful grinding sound & truck not driving or stopping right. Nail bitting experience just getting here. I was a rattled mess to say the least! The guy at the counter (who I later found out was the owner Mark) was super nice, had my truck pulled in immediately to diagnose. Brought me in to show me what was going on & why. Mark was very thorough and explained everything that was wrong. It was a lot...siezed brakes, axel seals, etc.. needed tires BADLY. It was EXPENSIVE...but I did a quick check on-line & everything he was saying & his prices made sense. He explained what needed to be adressed NOW & what could be scheduled for another day. He had both guys working on it at once to get it done by the end of the day so I would be able to pick my son up from school & offered a free loaner for the repairs that still need to get scheduled. What impressed me most was how patiently he explained everything & how hard & fast they worked to get me back on the road. PLUS..he discovered another problem while working on the truck that he fixed at no charge! I will be coming here to get more work done & definitely if I need a mechanic in the future!
