Genuinely good coffee. Just moved here from out of state and was hoping to find a good replacement coffee shop, and Merit doesn't disappoint. I worked in third wave coffee for seven years, and my husband is pretty picky, and we both really love the coffee here. I'm gluten free and their hippie bar is good, and my husband liked their ham and cheese cruffin. This particular location has easy parking and is in a great neighborhood. Merit is a solid choice, and because of proximity has become one of my go-tos recently for a quick morning pit stop. I like their vanilla latte, even though it is definitely on the sweeter/sugary side compared to others I've had--it has been consistent across multiple visits which is something I always look for in a coffee shop. The baristas here know what they're doing! The only drawback is that the drinks get pretty expensive here compared to other comparable coffee shops ($7.25 for a large latte with tax and tip and all, can't say it's necessarily worth that price). They do serve Tacodeli tacos which is a win in my book! Seating at this location gets pretty tight at peak hours and it's often hard to find outdoor seating as they only have a few tables outside, but it's usually pretty empty in the early mornings. read more

Excellent coffee and fabulous barista/owners. I had the oat milk latte and my boyfriend had a cafe mocha. Beautifully prepared and the cups were delightful. Superp coffee! Clean modern design inside. The only downside was all the college kids on laptops camping out hogging multiple seats and tables whilst their dried up empty coffee cups sit never to be touched again (picture one kid, laptop, a table & 3 chairs occupied with that one persons books, bag & personal snacks - yes, personal snack, not bought at this coffee shop!!!!!). We ordered 3 coffees as we chatted for about half an hour. We were respectful of the coffee shop & other patrons. These laptop seat hoggers never once budged and it was unfair to all the non laptop patrons standing around. read more

This coffee shop was worth the hype everyone had been giving me about it. During Covid they have their indoor area closed and responsibly distanced tables in the outdoors you can use. The place looks like a great hangout spot for when the inside it open and not to mention they had a 90s playlist going on that puts you in a great mood right away. I ordered their cold brew and iced mocha latte. The cold brew was great - little bitterness and strong floral flavors but what "brew" my mind was the iced mocha latte. I ordered it after asking the barista what his favorite cold drink was, and he didn't disappoint. Mixing in their home made chocolate syrup and a shot of expresso it was one of the best iced lattes I've had in a long time! I'm more of a strong black coffee drinker but this was sugar worth every calorie. Will definitely come back for that drink and try some of their hot coffees on a cooler day. read more

I really like the Mexican coffee and the chocolate donut here. I came in to try the pop tart which was pretty good as well but I preferred the donut. My husband loved their iced matcha and we love that they carry oat milk. Their atmosphere is really great to work in and they have ample seating which is WONDERFUL! A major plus. GREAT oat milk latte! The next time I'm over in the this area I am getting coffee beans and one of their super soft long sleeve shirts to take home with me because I can't stop thinking about how good that coffee was and how soft that shirt is hahaha! Everyone in there was so kind. My daughter also thoroughly enjoyed her their pop-tarts! They reminded me of the ones from back home from a bakery that would make them from scratch and deliver them around town to the local shops. Bakeries and pastries like that are THE BEST! Some of these reviews have mentioned their seating options since COVID but the day we went (towards the end of October) we were able sit at some spaced apart tables inside. They also have some seating outside in the walk way which is covered! It was actually pretty steady when we went in and it was a great spot for me to meet up with a mom friend. The inside of this place reminds me a bit of Weekend Coffee; minimalist, white with natural wood accents, streamlined and thoughtful menu. The tables, if you were in groups of 3+, were maybe a bit tight if you planned to work and enjoy refreshments, but outlets were plentiful and WiFi was quick, so I've enjoyed my beverage The matcha latte with oat milk was creamy, earthy and had just the right amount of sweetness. The hot chocolate I had maybe could have been a tad hotter but the overall flavor was good. Honestly, thought, it was the pop tart that blew my mind. I don't normally gravitate towards pop tarts, but the cashier highly recommended it and they were low on options since it was past midday. It was flavorful, actual berry tasting filling wrapped in buttery crust; just the perfect size without going overboard. *drool* Come here for the pop tart, stay for the ambiance... and a second pop tart. read more

I often go to the different Merit's in the Dallas area as I Love merit's coffee. Unfortunately this is the location I try to avoid as their staff is so rude in this location. I wouldn't recommend this location as the staff makes you feel like it's a bother to ask questions about their drinks or even as simple as asking for a napkin. read more

What a great addition to Dallas! I love the feel inside of this coffee shop. There is ample space for working/studying, great coffee and seasonal flavors. The barista was great and told us all about the flavors they make and the best was the vanilla which has a touch of honey flavor. The chocolate flavor was dark and a little more bitter than I was expecting. The reason is they make the flavors themselves so the dark richness comes through. Would pair great with a pasty. I love that they have taco deli options as well as homemade pastries - next time I'm definitely getting the pop tarts! The inside space is great, parking is easy and out front, and the people who work there are very kind. Would love to go back and sit and work and get some coffee. They have some seasonal flavors and options in the works as I was told - so next visit will have different flavor options and I will update on what they have! read more

This San Antonio-based coffee chain, with two locations in Dallas, might be able to compete with some of my Dallas favorites. I love coffee shops that roast their own beans. It really gives a sense to me that the coffee I buy is 100% a product of that company. Some of my favorite shops in Dallas, such as Ascension and White Rock, roast their own beans, and their coffee is leagues ahead of their competitors. Merit roasts its own beans, and it roasts them well. The quality of beans isn't everything--you can easily get the grind or brewing method wrong and make lackluster coffee with incredible beans--but you can't save low quality beans with high quality everything else. Merit's refusal to compromise on bean quality carries over to the rest of the shop. The Highland Park branch features glass doors and walls. Each booth has its own outlets. Beyond the door by the counter you can find a seating in a shaded alleyway decorated with hanging lights--perfect for the early summer. If you're flying solo, you'll have ample space on the round tables for your books, computer, writing pad and repast. Merit's menu is fairly standard for DFW coffee shops. Of course you have your coffee, both drip and pour-over, and coffee-esque beverages--macchiatos, cortados, cappuccinos and lattes. Sweet treats are available, as well as juice, soda, and Topo Chico. I had the Cesar Espinoza pour-over. This coffee was well worth the $4 I paid for it. It's dry, the way wine can be dry. I normally prefer light-roasted sweeter coffees. Most smokier dark roasts I've had are too flat and bitter, like the beans have no real flavor beyond the roast. The Cesar Espinoza managed to lack sweetness without being abrasive. I would happily order it again, especially since it came in such a charming little karafe. Although the atmosphere of the Highland Park store was pleasant and calm, I wish there had been more color and character in the store. Merit was mostly wood, metal and glass. There were no decorations on the walls. I'm glad it didn't have the commercial-washed feel I've gotten from other shops in DFW, but it could still use more personality. I've since visited the Deep Ellum store, which has much more personality. It's a really cool, modern vibe. I would still highly recommend Merit to anyone in Dallas, San Antonio or Austin--the only three cities with Merit. It's a high-quality chain that Texans should be proud of. read more

This used to be my favorite coffee shop in Dallas, but I've been really disappointed with my drinks my last few visits, and going to start going elsewhere when a good, hot drink is what I'm after. Overall, the ambiance is great. I have never had an issue with finding a place to sit if I was coming to work on my laptop for a bit. There are sufficient outlets which is not always easy to come by, which is probably why I've continued to come back so frequently despite my cold drinks and stares from the baristas. Where they have really disappointed is that all the drinks I have recently ordered that are intended to be hot, are tepid at best. And this problem is pervasive across the menu from a London Fog to a chai latte to a black coffee. To top it all off, when confronted about their cold beverages, they will not remake the drink, nor have anyway of heating it up. They do offer the helpful advice that 'reheating coffee makes it taste worse', to which I would counter that I'd take hot mediocre coffee over cold coffee any day. I hope they take the time to read the motto on their cups which ends "...and the name 'Merit' on a label is a representation of purity and quality" and consider what the product inside the cup represents. read more

Merit has become one of my favorite coffee places since I moved to TX. The coffee and syrups are excellent and the shops (those located within Dallas, at least) have a wonderful ambiance. The Deep Ellum location was my favorite study spot when I lived in that location. The Oak Lawn location is great too (but good luck getting a seat there on weekends!:). The only negative thing about the Deep Ellum location is they put up any vacant chairs/tables often over an hour before closing, and insist you sit elsewhere (even though it takes 15 seconds at most to wipe a table and put the chairs up). It kinda makes you feel like a nuisance--often guests huddle awkwardly on whatever they can find to sit on and if you're already there at a table you get surrounded by all these chairs on tables like a subtle hint to leave. Other than that, they're awesome! read more

I stopped by in the midst of the pandemic so I didn't actually go inside but they had safety measures in place for their customers. I ordered ahead online, went to pick it up and they even waited to put the ice in my coffee until I got there! I tried their banana walnut muffin and strawberry pop tart - it was all good! Great coffee....good luck getting them to sell some to you if they don't find it convenient to brew you some. I drove quite a distance from the exurbs for a cup. I arrived more than 45 minutes before closing, and they told me it was too late.....for coffee....at an establishment entitled Merit COFFEE. When I told the person behind the counter I had just driven nearly 40 miles for a cup, she just smiled wanly and said, 'sorry.' Also, someone needs to inform these would-be baristas in their early 20s that an Americano is not a substitute for a cup of coffee....rather, it is watered-down espresso beans. I like Merit Coffee. I've been to their Austin location, so I was happy to stop by this Dallas location while here for the weekend. I got an iced chai with oat milk in my own cup. We went on a Sunday morning and the traffic trying to get to the store and leave were something else. There are a number of churches in the area so there was a lot of people parking and walking to church. Merit is in a shopping center with ample free parking. Inside it was not crowded, I ordered right away and my drink was ready very quickly. Their chai is not too sweet. It's a nice blend of tea and spices with a little bit of sweetness to round out the flavor. The oat milk blended well with the chai mix even when iced. It didn't separate at all. read more

AWFUL! So rude, I ordered my coffee and when the cashier went to go give it to the barista. She said "Jesus" and he goes "I know" it was an iced oat milk latte with a splash of half and half. Not that difficult. They did not know I was right there listening the whole time even after I gave them a nice tip. They then proceeded with "I'm so glad you're cashier today I would scream and claw my eyes out" and he said " oh I do internally and have an existential crisis in the back." I went to grab my order and asked for sugar she scoffed and said "what kind?" If corporate is reading this it was an Asian cashier and a 5'2, white, bigger girl with dark hair. Cute little shop. Stopped by on a Saturday morning. They were only allowing one party at a time to enter the store to order. There was a lying but the weight was minimal. We ordered and got our drinks within a few minutes. there were only three tables outside the store for sitting. I got a regular latte and it had the perfect amount of coffee taste to it. This coffee shop is located off of Oak Lawn Ave. next to Drybar and Tulum restaurant. Parking was not bad - people come and go frequently so you can usually find a spot. When you enter, there is a wall of tables to the right and some seating on the left (bar-type and two small tables/chairs). I went on a Monday and it was pretty packed. I sat on one of the smaller tables on the left. It's a fairly small place. The bathroom is not inside the restaurant. You have to walk outside and go into another door to the indoor bathroom, which is kept pretty clean. I ordered a hot chai latte with oat milk. It was a large cup and it was more of the muted flavored chai, more spices than sweet. I also bought some strawberry lemonade juice which was expensive but oh so good (believe they source it from Pressed juicery). The guy at checkout was pretty cool and friendly so I appreciated that. I was hoping for some more food options - it was primarily pastries that were available. I actually wouldn't mind going back and trying something different to see if I like it better than the chai. The vibe was not chill, but it was a Monday and maybe people were stressed. A lot of them seemed to be working remotely. I measure all coffee shops to Ascension Coffee off of Oak Lawn because I feel they have the best mixture of coffee/food/chill vibes/cool staff. read more

Coffee was ok but what really bothered me was the service. I had ordered an almond croissant and when my coffee was ready to pick up I asked them for my almond croissant which they forgot. The barista then got me a croissant which I asked her to heat but when I looked in the bag it was a regular croissant. I went back and explained she had given me the wrong order and she started sighing and very rudely got an almond croissant heated for me and practically just threw it on the counter. Originally from San Antonio, I am familiar with Local coffee, aka Merit Coffee, which started in SA. Vanilla and chocolate lattes are solid and not overly sweet. I usually get my lattes with almond milk. They also have caramel flavored. I only wish they had more flavors. The hubby always gets the cold brew which is solid. The matcha lattes are also really good here. Prices are reasonable. Space is smaller than the San Antonio locations, but there are a few outlets and outdoor tables. Overall, one of my favorite places for coffee in Dallas. read more
