Purchased large flooring order for in home delivery but delivery company was instructed to curb side deliver. I called and spoke with Chris the General Manager. He instructed the delivery driver to unload the product and he would send people to load it into the house. He showed up 15 minutes later with a helper and loaded 76 cartons of flooring into my house. This guy understands Customer Service and is a credit to the Menards organization. I am grateful to him for his personal effort and will always be a Menards customer. read more

It's okay, lots of choices, the place is really huge and you have a choice of 5 or 6 of any specific thing you need or want. However, because of the size, it is a workout to find things, and it will take more than you think even if you know specifically what you want. Each and every time I've been there, I've either always been able to find what I came for or have been pointed in the right direction by one of the many employees on the floor of this rather huge, warehouse location. You'll never see empty shelves or items in disarray here. We often buy our kitchen and bathroom cleaning supplies here. The pricing is always good. This is also one of the two locations we buy bird feed/seed and supplies/accoutrements (the other location being Mills Fleet Farm). At this time (and I believe all year), they have their special mail-in rebate promotion of 11% that can be used for your next purchase. Such a deal! My home theater was experiencing some issues and after I determined that it was not my speakers and the receiver was recently replaced, pretty much new I thought that maybe the old wires should get replaced. This store has a pretty extensive isle with all kinds of goodies to build and repair home theatre systems. I just needed some odds and ends like new wire, new connectors and small wire ties to run all new modern speaker wires. The home theater isle had all my needs and more so I left with all that I needed. After installing all new wires and fresh/new connectors at the receiver my system worked flawlessly and maybe I didn't need to replace that receiver after all. I guess speaker wire can degrade or older wires don't work well with today's new receivers. I can't complain because this store had everything I needed to fix my little project today and I happy with the outcome. read more

It turns out purchasing a home built in 1915 requires frequent trips to the home improvement store. Outlets need to be replaced, shelves built, and appropriate dryer venting established. And, that was just the first few days. Enter Menards. Menards is unlike any other home improvement store I've been to. The sheer expanse of the place is astounding--never mind the volume and variety of stock. They have everything from flooring, power tools, lumber, sinks, window coverings, lawn furniture, fire places, appliances of all kinds (small and large), air conditioners, pet food, an odd assortment of groceries, and, fortunately for my living room walls--simple hammers and nails for hanging art. It's almost just a little overkill. And, makes finding what you need (or even the section that you think you might need to be in) difficult. But, hey, I typically put a serious dent in my fitbit's daily step goals with every trip to Menards. So, there's that. The service is adequate (nothing more, nothing less) and perhaps a bit compartmentalized. Ie: workers from one area won't necessarily be able to help you with something from another area. I have two examples of this: 1) Found lawn furniture I wanted and try as I might, I couldn't find a worker in order to discover if they had any in stock. So, I went to the service desk in the front of the store with a picture on my phone of the barcode and stock description of the item. Though, she had a computer, she directed me to the hardware department in order to have them look up if there were any in stock. Weird, no? 2) Later, upon purchasing the lawn furniture, I found that it wouldn't fit in my vehicle in its box. But, removed from the box it fit fine. So, I removed the item from the box. Then, of course, I had this huge box to deal with. I asked a worker if there was any way they could recycle if for me. "Absolutely," she replied before proceeding to give me instructions on which area to bring it to and who to tell I'd like to have it recycled. Once there? I'm pretty sure they picked it up and brought it not far from where I was originally standing with it. It just seems like a lot of running around to get one thing done. However, when you do need help and you find the appropriate person from the appropriate department, they are quite friendly and will walk you straight to the item you seek and readily answer any questions you have. Called ahead and asked for a generator. They said they had 1 in stock. Only had the floor display which could have told us that over the phone. Took 10 minutes to find someone working there. Said ok we'll take the floor model but where are the parts for it. Took another 10 minutes looking for the parts and couldn't find a piece to it. Asked for a discount because who wants to buy something that's dirty, with scuffs, and missing pieces for full price $600. The manager said he will see and after another 10 minutes go by we see them walking away from us and never told us anything. All around horrible customer service. Menards must be the oddest big box hardware store I have ever encountered. They sell everything from home repair items to pet food and off brand food products. If you want to find an off brand then this is your store! Normal stores put the branded items at eye level...not Menards. They put their own bizarre private label brands at eye level and put national brands on the bottom shelf. They also have items like Larry the Cable Guy potato chips if you are interested. If you need to shop for a Mother's Day card they also sell cards there....just so odd compared to Home Depot. My two biggest issues with this company are product quality and ethics. If you buy an off label great deal you might have issues with replacement parts. We purchased expensive landscape lights and the company that made them is no longer in business so be warned! Also, having been a vendor for this company I saw them do some very shady things at a corporate level. Those two things made me lose respect for this company. I purchased a dining room chandelier from this location back in June. About a week after I installed it, I knocked into it with my head and one of the glass balls shattered all over the floor. I then began my hunt for replacements - but to no avail. Menard's doesn't sell the replacements, nor did the lighting store on St. Paul. Estrella in the lighting department helped me get replacements that would work, plus a couple of extras for the future. Very clean and better stocked than I expected. While they didn't have what we needed(70's era bathroom fan) the gentlemen were all very polite and helpful. They got us on the right track. Very adequate selection of products, like all Menards. But this West Milwaukee location seems to have disinterested and unfriendly associates working on the floor. Found one female employee leaning against some shelves and staring intensely at her nails. Couldn't tell me exactly where a certain item was located. Found another guy on the ground stocking a low shelf, asked him where the product was, and he never even looked up, just pointed and said "straight down there." There are surly security guards at both entrance and exit, which tells you something about the customers they must get at this location. Never saw this at Menards in West Allis or Waukesha. One guard was talking on his phone and just pointed in a direction when I asked where the customer service desk was. Menards seems to be designed so that dudes never need to shop anywhere else. In addition to all of the hardware-y, building type stuff (mostly junk quality) they have groceries (like Dinty Moore Beef Stew, frozen pizza and jerky), toiletries, work clothing and even greeting cards. So if you're in grabbing some fittings you can pick up a birthday card & a cheap scented candle for the wife. Reasons Why Menards is Worse than Home Depot: *Junky merchandise - very little is made to last. You're "saving money" because everything is made in China and will break shortly. *Worthless staff - there's never anyone to assist and even if you can find a staffer, they don't know the answer *The store is disorganized - requiring you to walk every inch of this massive floor to find the thing you need *Can we stop with that annoying jingle already? They play it like every 10 seconds in the store too We rarely come here because even the Mister gets irritated with Menards. The thing is, if you're looking for that one weird thing that Home Depot doesn't have, Menards probably carries it. You'll eventually find it after walking six miles, passing 5 teenage employees texting on their phones and ignoring you & you'll hear that stupid "Save Big Money at Menards" about 15,000 times. MENARD'S: It's a hardware superstore with hit-or-miss service. Yes, you can find pretty much everything you need here but you're really rolling the dice depending on which staff member "assists" you. One of my biggest gripes about Menard's (as a whole) over the years has been what seems to be a lack of training or customer service knowledge amongst their employees and management. In my high school days, Menard's employed a TON of people I grew up with or went to school with. Cheap labor, but without proper training, it is an ineffective developmental model. When folks go to a hardware store, whether they are an experienced contractor/handyperson, they want to encounter staff who know what they are talking about. They don't want to be passed off to another employee or have to track someone down! I cannot in good conscience rate this particular Menard's higher than 2 stars as my experiences at this location have either been great or awful. Sometimes I get someone who can help me find exactly what I am looking for and will walk with me to the aisle and provide suggestions. Other times, I receive a vague nod/point and a mumbled "ehhh...it's in that direction, man," A few positives: their selection of landscaping needs, outdoor patio furniture, grills, and gardening department. I'd probably do my research first before making a major purchase here, but if I am picking up a few small items (most recent visit: drain stop, sink strainer, batteries, potting soil) I'd be OK venturing on my own into the store. Ultimately, I'd rather visit a local ACE branch (see previous review) or a True Value (Do those exist anymore? My go-to location on 76th closed last summer) where I know I'll get trusted and dedicated service and won't leave with more questions than answers. Wow what can I say other than to tell the world to never order cabinets from these guys. Absolute incompetence on each level. I ordered custom cabinets for a small kitchen. When I picked up my first pallet of items from the special order pickup the guy was a jerk and made faces as to say "my coworkers are idiots." I went later to pick up my second pallet and nobody said a word to me for at least 10 minutes. Finally a guy asked me if I needed help and 20 minutes later someone brought me the rest. He assured me this was my whole order. I got them home and 3 cabinets were smashed when I opened the box. One was still usable. So I return the two smashed units and they swapped them out. I get back to unpack and find I'm missing 20 items. So I call them and they say most are still sitting in the pickup area. I come back to pick up my items and the clearly new worker found 8 of my items in the first hour she was looking. Then she tells me my toe kicks are there but "the guys broke them." They eventually found a few more items but had to order the rest a second time. My time is valuable and this is for a rental property. So the day I was going to install them was a wash, I wasted hours returning items, I wasted 2 hours waiting for the girl to find some items or figure it out. And finally I have to wait an extra week at least because they had to special order the parts again. So I'm missing out on a month of rent because I wont get my place rented when planned. I lost out on a month of rent plus all the wasted time running back and forth because of incompetence at this location. And the best part is that they did nothing to make this up to me. I just love Menards. Not only do they provide you with all the DIY needs, but their staff is helpful and the selection is vast. I love their food section as you can find typically more expensive dry goods like peanuts, jerky and soup for significantly less than the supermarket. The pet section is reasonably priced as well. He spent time with us going through the various cabinet vendors, colors, styles ,etc - especially when I can be a little picky about what I want. He was very nice and gave us different prices for some small modifications that we wanted after he had done our original design on the computer. This is my second Menards review! I have just started coming to his one as it is closer to my house. The other Menards I've been going to for a while since I can go during my lunch break at work. This one is set up like every other Menards there is so you won't have to learn a new store format in here. There is plenty of parking in the private, large lot. The staff isn't the most helpful. I had to ask 3 people to finally find what I was looking for after going to both sides of the stores since 2 said the wrong thing instead of just checking with someone. The person in the appliance department was very helpful and definitely was eager for a sell. Overall, they have a good clearance section, good damaged wood section for discount, and if you're looking for some inexpensive items to DIY this is your place. Don't expect too much help with explaining how to perform certain DIY items. read more

Amazing incompetence. We had pre-ordered a 34 sheets of a wall paneling. Easy enough. My employee called on the day of the pick up to confirm the order. Everything's fine. Upon getting there, they couldn't find the product. "It could take half an hour or three hours." That's unacceptable. So he leaves. He calls the next day. They claimed they tried to call him and tell him they found it. They had not. He went back. They loaded 16 sheets into the truck. When he asked where the rest was, the employee and manager were confused as they couldn't tell the number 16 from 34. They didn't even have half the order. They honestly didn't understand why this was a problem. I mean come on. Just incredible incompetence. Good luck if you venture there. read more

Not really digging this location and I should be. It's the closest Menard's to me, along with being the biggest Menard's within 5 miles of my house. I much rather shop at the smaller Highway 100 location and if they don't carry something, I order it or travel out to the much bigger South 27th street in Franklin location. There is a reason for this- customer service. Admittedly, I'm pretty new at this home improvement stuff. I've only been a homeowner for 4 years now, but I'm always have projects going on and I always need tools and supplies, most of which I haven't bought before. This trip had me buying odds and ends with one exception, I needed a sliding door track kit for a closet. This is where my problems began. I hunted and hunted and I couldn't find this, so I started to look for an employee. This was in the middle of the afternoon, you'd think I'd find someone quick, but that wasn't the case. After a good 10 minutes of circling the store twice, I find a guy talking to some other employees. When a customer walks up and looks at you, the proper thing to do is to take a break from yapping and help the customer. Yet these employees kept going on until I interrupted. I asked the guy where I could find the kit, his response? "I don't know, you got to ask the guy in doors." So I head over to the doors section to find 3 employees talking to one customer. I pull one of the employees to the side and ask, he says "I don't know, you have to ask that guy" as he points to an older gentleman. So I go to grab the older gentleman and ask if he knows where they keep the kits. He says "Sure, follow me!". Finally, someone is willing to help after a half hour of trying. Then this old man proceeds to run off so damn quick I had trouble keeping up with him since I was pushing a wide cart and he was squeezing in between people. He showed me exactly what I was looking for, so I guess I'm thankful for that considering I was about to leave the cart there, give up and go to a different hardware store. I live close to HomeDepot on P. Wash., but I drive to this Menard's location, because it is so much better. I went looking for a reciprocating saw and was helped by a young man named Jacob. He was very knowledgable and FRIENDLY. He spent at least 15 minutes with me finding the right saw and blades. I will never spend a penny at the Home Depot on P. Wash. again. The development on Miller Parkway has been quite welcome. This Menards, though not super new, has been around for about 5 years now. The staff here is helpful, not overly in your face - and available when you need them. The overall place is nice, they will generally have what you are looking for - and typically more for the budget conscious. If you are looking for general home repair - DIY stuff - it gets the job done. If you are a contractor, this isn't the place you will go often. For my projects, it serves me well because it is close/convenient. Not for high end projects, though. For those things, you may want to look somewhere else. But the staff is nice here! read more

I'm here, I must be repelling the workers because they're either busy or fast walking/running. I just had a worker cover his badge after I tried to get his attention. Never again will I shop at Menards. I was approached by a security guard as I entered and told I had to either get a mask out of my car or buy on at the service counter before I could shop at their store. I refused explaining that I am not sick, nor have I been sick and I that they were just being opportunists by trying to sell masks to everyone entering their store. With severe allergies this time of year masks make me claustrophobic and I have difficulties breathing resulting in panic breathing when I wear them. This feels like discrimination forcing people to wear masks. What will they force us to do in the future, wear chains? read more

Menards is a weird kind of place. I hate walking through the turnstiles on the way in so I enter through the exit. They carry all sorts of crap from A to Z. Their special deals on clothes and household items aren't that special. The prices are good but the items are junky quality. It's usually difficult to find an employee when you need help. The lines are usually long. The rebates are kind of a rip off. You don't actually get cash back. You get a store voucher to force you to come back to the store to use it. I now purchase online and pick up. Today I purchased a toilet, caulk and a wax ring online. It was ready to pick up in 15 minutes from when I placed the order. Picked it up in back by lumber at the special order desk. Easy process. Employee didn't ask for ID or anything. Not especially safe. Online ordering is your best bet for an easy time at menards. read more

Needed a 40 gallon, short water heater. Before purchasing, both the kid on the floor and I confirmed they had 12 in stock. I paid for it and was told to pick it up from their dock. Drove around and followed the signs, calling into the desk, gave them our order number and was told they'd pull it shortly. After waiting 15 minutes, I walked in and again gave them my purchase order. Another 40 minutes went by and two other people asked for my purchase order. At about 90 minutes of waiting someone new came up and informed us that they couldn't find any of the 12 listed units. The only option was to take a refund and drive across town to buy it at another store. When asked how their inventory could be that far off online and internally, I never got a straight answer. If you buy anything here, don't waste your time online checking inventory. Only doing a physical inventory when you're there is your safe option. read more

Why do I ever come here? Force of habit perhaps. My dad was a "Menards Guy", so I've been dragged to everyone of them in the 414 and 262, and apart from size (they range from huge to ginormous), they are all pretty much the same. This just happens to be the closest one to my house, so therefore, I keep trying to find reasons to make this store useful. Here are my general observations: 1. Menards shoppers are not Home Depot shoppers. I'm one of the later. 2. Menards have their entrances just about as far from their exits as possible. Sure, you found a nice spot by the entrance, but you'll be hiking it back to your car later with your full cart of stuff. 3. Menards stuff is cheap; in both price and quality. Great if you have rental property, or if you don't care how long the stuff lasts. 4. As others have noted, the "help" is spotty. Mostly teenagers. The lumberyard guys aren't bad though, I'll give them that. 5. It is generally a cluster-fuck trying to get out of the store. Be prepared for a pat-down. 6. This store is very bilingual, meaning the teenage help can ignore you in two languages. 7. It's almost too big. While great for selection (of mostly cheap crap), things could be laid out better. You'll wish you had brought grammy's scooter to get around the store. 8. In my opinion, the only redeeming department is the outdoor lumbar yard. If you have a large project, it is great to be able to pull right up to the supplies you need and load them right in your truck. Other than this, just go to Home Depot. read more
