I have been shopping at the Elm Grove store for 35 years. Everyone working there has always been polite, knowledgeable, and helpful. I recently purchased a Ego $1300.00 mower. Opening it at home the inside packaging was damaged with the battery and spare blade loose. The outside of the box was taped heavily that was not normal. My gripe is that this carton should have been caught by someone along the way. The mower does have some damage and it is going to be replaced in FOUR DAYS. I get free delivery and pickup, WOW. After watching unboxing videos I realize this mower had been returned. I guess they do not check the product just sell it again. That why the battery and blade were loose and the mower was rolling in the box. read more

This store had used to be better when Stew Elliott was the chief owner. Under his leadership it was much better customer service, period. Now you walk in and they'll still try to help you, but it's much less than it had used to be. i.e. The cashier's rarely pay attention OR don't care as much to what they're doing. Their price matching is a hassle depending on who you ask in that store. You end up doing "their" thinking for them. I've been going here since 1995, living nearby. I am a rewards member. My first ever review anywhere. I have shopped at Elliot's Ace for 35 of their 60 years. A true hardware store in it's day. Spent thousands of dollars over time. Today I went in to get four pieces of glass cut for a damaged outdoor post lamp. I created a template for them. I was asked by the service desk to return later in the day when their glass cutter came in. I asked if I could leave the template for him with the order. No different than what I had done several times over the years. Apparently there is a newer policy of needing to be in the store while they cut as some people do not return for their glass nor pay. I indicated OK, I will call next time 1st so assure I can have glass cut not to waste a trip. Note: often in the past I was asked to leave my template and return later as they needed time to cut the glass. When checking out the woman attendant asked if I found everything. I replied yes except I found the new glass cutting policy unfriendly to customers. The return desk woman stepped in annoyed at the service desk and called back to them and got them to agree to taking the template. These women were wonderful and appreciated this customer. I asked them not to fuss & I would come back later. They insisted. As I approached the service desk the service individual I dealt with was retreating to the back of the service area complaining about me to another service person. This 2nd service person came forward and was less than friendly and began to defend the new policy. I asked if he could help me or not as the ladies had sent me back again. No no clear response, as I then asked for the Store Manager and I was awkwardly informed he was on his way. I spoke to the store manager (who I recognized & had kindly assisted me over the years) and shared the series of events. He was unaware of the new policy of needing to be in the store to have glass cut. He gladly took my template and contact information. They will call when it is done. First, it is disappointing & inconvenient to be turned away by the service desk, although I accepted it. Unfortunate trust has been lost by Elliot's based on some customers actions. Being a rewards member, long time customer, leaving a template.... make me a risk? Or is the bigger risk losing a long time customer for $25 of glass. My issue is not so much being asked to come back at their convenience, but very much hearing the disrespect as I returned back to the service desk. My recommendation to Stu Elliot is to take the two women, give them a raise, & put them back in the service area. They know what service means. I will give Elliot's 5 stars over 35 years and 1 start today, only salvaged by the store manager and the checkout/returns staff. read more

I've worked with them for 30 plus years. They're very good when you play stump the salesman.... With 100 year old plumbing or electrical. I also appreciate the honesty if they don't have a solution, they recommend someone who might. While sometimes more expensive than the box stores, I found paying a bit more and getting right answers up front better than several return trips because the kid working in the big box knew less about the subject than you did. Gigantic locally-owned two floor ACE just on the edge of Elm Grove. Stupendous service, outstanding selection of lawn and garden items and fairly-priced items. I thought the ACE store of my childhood was the best, but I've been proven wrong -- Elliott's is top notch. Everyone working at this store is incredibly helpful and all have provided useful advice and recommendations. Pro tip: park in the "back" lot away from Bluemound/Watertown Plank. Given its busy retail location, you might not be thinking "hardware" and "lawn fertilizer", but this store is surprisingly well stocked and extremely well-staffed. With TWO floors - that's right, two - they have lots of space. They do indeed carry all the items in the lot outside like mulch and dirt. There's a whole back section for paint. The staff are really what makes this Ace Hardware shine, though. The guys behind the counter downstairs are INCREDIBLY helpful, providing solutions even if they themselves can't help. This store does electric chip car key replacement/duplication, but they can't do it for the keys that are double-chip/proximity chip start, but they'll tell you who can! (It's Whitlow Locksmith, and they're cheaper than the dealership generally.) I normally shop at the Ace near Oklahoma/National in West Allis, but I've been finding myself coming to this one more and more often. One drawback is the upper parking lot - a little tricky to get in and out of. But there's lots of parking in the back, too! read more

I suppose the best way to describe this store is "better than cheesecake, and Menard's, and Da' Bears, and comfortable shoes, and having your hair blown out, or a nap in a hammock on a beautiful summer day. They are so helpful and courteous to their customers. They are always willing to help you find what you need, or try to decipher that "interestingly described" item that you do not know the name of.....heck, they will find it, tell you what it's called for real, and then tell you how to install it...and make sure you have the tools required to install it. It's as if every employee, in every department, is a specialist in that particular "genre" of hardware music. Do you want to match some paint perfectly? Do you need a plumbing valve? Do you need keys made? Do you want to find a bird feeder that Will keep the bleepity- bleeping squirrels out of it, but allow the birds access, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE???!! Would you like someone else to carry the heavy bags of salt and put them in your car for you?? If so, then this is the store for you. Not to mention they have a discount/reward program! Elliott's in Elm Grove is home store for the Elliott's Ace chain in the area. You know that great cool hardware store you remember as a kid? Here it is, it hasn't been eaten up by Home Depot yet. Experienced and knowledgeable staff who have made a career out of the business, rather than kids working their way through college, make a head-and-shoulders-above-the-rest difference here. Not only are the staff helpful, but you can tell from the selections offered that these guys are really in touch with what a hardware store ought to be, and what their customers need. Unfortunately, Elliott's is not a home improvement store. If you need lots of wood, or drywall, etc., you might be better off at Menard's. However, you have an unusual fastener need, or an odd switch in a lamp that needs to be replaced, Ace will probably have what you need. This Ace is more or less on the tail end of my search list because of its distance, which is unfortunate because it is extremely comprehensive. Our local store is, I think, the smallest of the Elliott's. read more

My favorite hardware store for decades! I greatly prefer the smaller layout than the football field size aisles and parking lots of big box stores. You can find just about anything you're looking for and if you can't, there are people available to help. Need a piece of glass? Paint or varnish? Sandpaper or tools? Keys duplicated? Light bulbs? Been to a few other Ace hardware stores and Elliott's is the best one in the area. As mentioned in another Ace review, I miss the true hardware stores as they are usually staples in most towns but have been driven out by big box stores with better buying power. What sets Elliot's apart from other Ace or the big box? Well they are not a small store. They are at least twice the size of most average Ace stores. So finding what you need you will most likely find it here. Service is very good but not as good as Tomchek Ace in Waukesha.... sorry Elliot's. Price is of course can be more for certain products but I have found most items to be not that much more or comparable. Perhaps because they are near Home Depot and Menards. Ample parking up on top and down below. Only drawback is the location and so much traffic around Brookfield Square. I love that they Carrie products that Big Boxes don't such as Traeger supplies and wood pellets and recently found out they carry most anything you need for pinewood derby for your son! In the end it is worth it for consumers to visit hardware stores such as Elliot's to keep them in the area especially when they are so big and provides wonderful customer service. read more

I have been coming to the Elm Grove Elliots for decades, and their selection of harder to find nuts and bolts hardware (like stainless metric hardware which I buy here often) is excellent. They are also my go to source for odd things like Nordicware cake pans and wood pellets for my Traeger smoker (which I bought there also). Ohhh my goodness. I have never been to a hardware store so friendly and helpful. Doug (I think he's one of the managers or he's the store manager....) is so awesome it's beyond belief. If anything is out of stock, he would call me to let me know when it's back in stock. I mean, what a customer service!!!! He's very knowledgeable of everything in the store and gives me excellent recommendations. There are many items I can buy elsewhere but if I can find them at ACE then I'll make a point to buy from them. That's how much I love this store. A shout out to Elliott's Ace Hardware. I already adored this store, for always having what I need, and what I don't need but makes me happy. I recently had some issues with their reward program, like not actually getting rewards and being unable to look up my account in store. The staff there gave me the corporate number so I could find out what was going on. I called and the woman who used to handle these issues wasn't there so I was given Stew Elliott Jr.(local owner) who listened to my issue and took it upon himself to find out the problem. He found out that the service they use for the rewards program data entry made some mistakes on my phone number and my zip code, placing me in Froid, Montana! He fixed my account and then sent me a letter apologizing for the inconvenience with a gift card. On top of that he will be looking into any lost rewards over the last two years. This is what customer service. At the store level, where I have never been disappointed with their prompt and friendly service and all the way up the ladder where it is not beneath the owner to handle my rewards account issue. So if you aren't a fan of the big box home improvement store, then your local Ace Hardware store is the place to go. I love this place! The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. I hate walking into one of the big box stores looking for some "how to" advise, only to be met by a blank stare. This is never the case at Elliott's. If the salesperson you ask doesn't have the answer you seek, they go find another employee that does. The prices may not be the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. I would rather have friendly and helpful staff than rock bottom prices with no one to help any day of the week. read more

My review is based on my being in a wheelchair. My Father LOVED the place, and rightly so. They do have pretty much anything you would need, especially when it comes to nuts & bolts. Also, their employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. However... Three years ago, I had an acute spinal cord injury and I am wheelchair bound. There is no upside to it. So I am at the end of an isle, looking for some bolts. So an Ace employee was helping another customer needed to get past me and asked me if I would move. Really? Ask the customer in a wheelchair to MOVE..."because the have to get past me"? WTF!!?? There are many people that go out of their way to help, when I actually don't need it. But it is very touching that they are willing. Then there are people like those two idiots. Lastly, the store, especially the upper level of the store, is NOT WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY. The isles are too narrow, and it is hard to maneuver around them. It really is a good store, probably the best of the Elliot group. They need to educate their employees and floor layout. read more

Do you want to find a sump pump? They have them here, I know that for a fact. This is a 2-story hardware store. They carry anything a normal household might need, in addition to the not-so-normal, or hard-to find items. The staff is awesome. I remember I had to make an 'emergency run' here, and the staff answered all my questions (you know.... the "new homeowner"-type questions) and helped me pick out everything I need, in addition to some good tips. All in all, very helpful staff, and I wouldn't hesitate to come here again vs. Home Cheap-ot. read more

Every time I go to my local ace hardware there's a problem. One time I called to see if they had a certain brand of deck stain in stock. I was told no. I was also told they don't even carry that brand. I know they carry that brand because I seen it there, I showed up GuessWhat? It was right on the shelf! Another time I went in and asked if they had a certain hinge for my door. The gentleman looked at it and said no. So I began to look around he got cocky with me and told me I said we don't have that! Well I found it and I purchase it with no apology. Today I went in to get a key made after standing there staring at the floor for five minutes this gentleman tells me that they don't have it. I mean really there's 10,000 keys in this place and they can't cut me one! These people are complete idiots.The only business that they get is local business but they run us all away.
