We called about 10 days ago and asked about Belkin surge protectors. We were told yes they have Belkin surge protectors and many other kinds. Of course they did not. My wife goes into the store. She had on a long winter coat. She's always cold. It's a medical condition. There are no inside pockets in that long winter coat that she wore open because then she started getting hot. She was overdressed, which happens to her when she goes into stores they don't have the air-conditioning set to 60. This was literally yesterday. She went out the day before and was freezing to death because of the windchill. She did not feel the need to explain this to the men that worked there. Unbelievable! She bought some batteries and was carrying them around the store. A man whose name we remember, we don't need to mention his name takes them away from her and says why don't you leave them on the counter? She she knew for sure that he thought she was some kind of thief because she was wearing a long winter coat. We all have weather whiplash. This man would not admit that he thought my wife was going to shop lift these batteries. She said she didn't see any sign saying do not carry merchandise around the store. She also did not notice any baskets one can carry the merchandise around it. Then the man continued to argue with my wife about how long the surge protector cord should be, and my wife kept saying what she wanted, and he kept arguing with her manslaining to her that she needed a long cord when she did not need a longer cord and we have very good reasons that we do not need a longer cord! My goodness! Prices are not cheap, they did not tell us the truth over the phone and then this happens. So not so happy;will avoid in future. Then she had to ask for a receipt. I had a simple project. I wanted to put a real platform on my bed. Today's beds come with slates. Not great for your back. Basic math told me that if plywood comes in 48x96" sheets that I'd need two cut down to 40x60 to make this work. Called Home Depot, they hung up on me. Called Ace, they claimed those size sheets don't exist anymore. Got in contact with Melrose Lumber through Yelp. Their responses were quick and kind. I was just looking on yelp for their hours, but had to stop a moment and give 5 stars for all their help over the 15 years I've been a homeowner in this town. I only write maybe one review a year- and it's usually to warn people away from a place, or give a tip about how to not have a bad experience, so just the fact that I am taking a few minutes to do this should tell you that this place is special. Chip, his daughter, and the rest of the staff have always been very friendly, helpful and patient- whether I know exactly what I'm looking for or am clueless what I need. They've cut lumber to size perfectly, helped me load heavy items into my car, and even stayed open a few extra minutes when I've arrived as they were locking up. They are closed now so I will work on something else and wait until they open tomorrow rather than waste more than an hour driving all the way to Home Depot and then have to search for what I need! First time in here although I've passed it many times. This is a big-box store in a space a third of the big box size. Stocked to the rafters with everything you'd expect from a hardware store. I went for the Benjamin Moore paint samples, and it had a large selection. What sold me, however, was the person walking past asking me what I was looking for. Wouldn't happen in the big box. Also I noted customers, clearly in the construction industry, chatting with the guy behind the register, to me a good sign that this place is the real deal. In the future, I think I'll try here rather than wandering aimlessly down the aisles of the big box, unable to find what I'm looking for. read more

A local hardware store, it has a very large selection and inventory of home related items: BM paint, tools, plumbing, lumber, sheetrock, gravel..whatever you need, they have it or can get it! Melrose Lumber is best hardware store out there. I live all the way in Mount Kisco, but I alway drive out of my way to go to Melrose. Not only does the store have a huge selection - at fair prices nonetheless - but if they don't have something in stock they will order it right away. They also stay open past their business hours to help their customers. The entire staff at Melrose is professional and very friendly. The minute you walk through the door they greet you with a smile and ask if you are being help. They embody the spirit of a Ma & Pop store, and every reason why you should shop locally! read more

I only have the best things to say about Melrose Lumber. As an artist, I often need help with supplies for my paintings and Chip and his staff are always so incredibly helpful and accommodating. They really care about helping their costumers. In the past, I have had a very difficult time getting help at hardware and lumber shops. I am not a contractor, or experienced with any hardware, and many other places will not give you the time of day if you aren't already extremely knowledgeable about the materials. The employees at Melrose Lumber are so patient and willing to work with me; they answer all of my questions and always help me problem-solve with thoughtful solutions. I drive-by Melrose Lumber because of their poor customer service. The people who work there are usually too busy on their cell phones to help. I was just down there and was given a bad time for pulling in the service area (out of the sun). There was no other customer in the whole store. I do not go there often and did not know their procedures for picking up wood. The lumber yard man walked off so I had to wait several minutes. I was told to move my truck, and then told to move it back in the shade. The lumber I was given was of poor quality. I try not to shop there. read more

When I moved to Ossining 5 years ago, one of my first missions was to find a good local hardware store. This is it and thank goodness there are still stores like this around. Melrose Lumber has been my "go-to" hardware store for various items and services over the years. It is practically "around the block" from me and provides more personal service than Home Depot which is much further away. I always get friendly and helpful service from Melrose's people, and I find their prices reasonable. They always have had in stock whatever I needed with instructions on how to use various items. Recently, with my having a compromising medical condition in this Carona virus environment, and not wanting to chance going into their shop, I called them from their parking lot, and Cathy promptly came out to my car to give me the small items I needed in addition to making the payment process easy. I visited Melrose Lumber today to get 2 keys cut. They were fast, efficient, courteous and inexpensive. Did exactly wanted I wanted and I was in and out within a few minutes -- on a Saturday! My husband also bought a tool that was in a "bargain" box that cost a fraction of what it would have cost if it hadn't been on sale. Highly recommend them. read more

How much do we love Melrose? They are the antidote to H.D, the horrible big box place. The owner and staff have been there forever, (or at least for the 20 + years I have lived nearby) know everything, give helpful, courteous advice with a great sense of humor thrown in. Not just a lumberyard, but a well-stocked hardware store. And guess what - today, I walked over there (Black Friday,cabin fever in 20 degree weather) and arrived just as they were walking out to the parking lot at closing time. The owner turned around, opened up, and got me my three dinky items just - because. Now that is personal, and that is what we need in this world!
