On multiple visits, he stepped in and interrupted conversations I was having with staff, often in a dismissive and unhelpful way. It disrupted the interaction and made the experience unnecessarily uncomfortable. For example, I was asking about a hex key for my fridge handle. A staff member was explaining that the connection was worn out, and I was clarifying whether I could still get a key that fits the socket. At that point, Mr. Goldberg stepped in and said, "we're not doing repairs," which wasn't what I was asking. I'm just visiting and was quite unprepared for the amount of snow that was dumped on Tarrytown. I didn't want to drive far but found the most helpful hardware store right in downtown Tarrytown, Goldberg Hardware. I was able to park right in front of the store. Kudos to the Department of Public Works for EXCELLENT snow removal on the side streets -- enabling parking. I called the day before to make sure I could pick up all the things that I would need to bring back home. I live in Maryland and we were hit with 6 inches of snow with a 4 inch layer of ICE on top. I will need to break the ice before I can clean my parking spot and front walk way. The guys at Goldbergs gave me advice on what i might need. As I browsed the store, I found extra gloves and that weird adapter that I've been looking everywhere for. Sorry -- Amazon, I would rather buy local! They even helped me get my things to the car. I could have spent 2 hours looking around Home Depot and not finding what I need --- instead I was in and out in 11 minutes and couldn't be happier. Really good hardware stores, are more than a nice-to-have, they're a necessity. Located on Main St, parking can be difficult at times but that's the biggest drawback. Goldberg's has just about every hardware necessity you could need; paint, tools, keys, wood glue, they got it all. Service is great as everyone working here is family and this actually cares about what they're doing. I didn't have any big questions when I was there, but I heard them helping others and they clearly know what they're talking about. Prices are reasonable. Don't waste your time here (or the store's time) if you plan on asking a question or if you aren't spending over a hundred dollars, especially if you're female. If you make repeat purchases for small items like crazy glue, hand tools, cleaning products, screws, etc., they label you as a problem customer behind your back, even if you've cumulatively spent hundreds and probably thousands at their store over several years. Even though they pretend to be friendly, helpful and nice to your face, they can't stand customers that frequently make smaller purchases and say nasty things about these customers behind their back. I understand that small businesses have high overhead, but the employees there never seem to be so busy, or engaged in tasks like restocking or pricing, that might make ringing up a smaller purchase a huge imposition - but apparently this is how they see it. I used to purposefully shop at Goldberg's, because I thought it was important to support small businesses, but then I learned how they really feel about their local customers, who aren't professional contractors buying in bulk; although I also don't understand why contractors would ever restock at Goldberg's, because they are so overpriced. They also don't carry that wide a selection of products and most of the higher quality or specialized tools and hardware that I've purchased have been from Amazon or at Home Depot or Lowe's. I hope the community learns the truth about how mean, arrogant, and seemingly sexist the men who work there are - i.e. they also seem to think women are unintelligent, vapid beings that should go nowhere near the tools and hardware they sell. For all their arrogance, they also don't always give complete or correct information about their products and have sold me tools that didn't work in the way they said they would. Came in looking for an Allen wrench for my boyfriends bike (urgently needed to get home) and they refused to show us singular allen wrenches even though they had full stock. They refused service for an individual wrench. I went in after my boyfriend came out disappointed and told them the issue and they said they can not help us because they don't know the size even though the bike was right out front. A man then tried to mansplain to me that i cant see the difference between two allen wrench sizes and when I said of course you can see the difference in size, i then told him I will pay you whatever for just one can you just show us please. finally one man told me to bring in my bike and while i bought it in the other told me to take it out and I had to assure him his partner told me to bring it in. He then told me to not bring the bike in further, im not allowed. All that for a $3 purchase which I was reminded I had to pay for multiple times. ‍‍And yes they were individually barcoded so they were intended for individual purchase they just didnt want to sell to us, not to mention we were watched like hawks. I don't understand how some people are getting money in a meter (which sounds amazing) and me and my partner were treated like this. Maybe a terrible day I caught them? Fyi Ive never left a bad review before and I feel awful doing it but it was a bad experience and its been weighing heavy on how I feel in this community. Was not impressed with the gentleman behind the register. Went in looking for screws for hinge plates and when I asked where they were located he said "over there by the screws". Instead of walking over and helping me (like any proud employee or business owner would do) he proceeded to tell me to "go left, keep going left, more left" in a very snobby condescending tone. I LOVE THIS STORE!!!!!!! This store is incredible. When I first went into this store I had memories of of my childhood, it smells like an old time hardware store. That smell is so nostalgic, it brings me back and I rememeber going to the local hardware store with my grandfather, and my father, and it makes me smile. It is amazing what smells do for you. They have a little bit of EVERYTHING. I bought a grill and they not only got to my house before I got home BUT they delivered it for FREE and assembled it too. They have a guzillion colors from Benjamin Moore and I finally started my own garden, they had basil, rosemary, dill, cilantro.............you name it, they have it! When I called to find out what they could do about this, they told me I had to buy NEW bulbs since these were months old! Imagine that! I am very disappointed in their response. I recently moved to this area and needed a drain for my bathtub and special light bulb. After not having much success with the drains purchased online on Amazon, I decided to give this hardware store a try. When I was at the store, I needed to know the size of my drain and called my roommate twice to ask her for a photo of the drain and for her input after looking at my options. When I was checking out, the total was under $10, and the other man working at the store made a nasty, uncalled for comment saying "that's a lot of thought for such a small purchase." He's really lucky I left my ghetto side back in the city or he would have gotten hurt. Sorry I rather not waste anymore time and money on drains that don't fit. I HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO TAKE CARE OF LIKE A GRADUATE EDUCATION TO MAKE MYSELF MORE OPEN MINDED AND UNDERSTANDING. Something this guy clearly would have benefited from.
