The salesperson I talked to wouldn't even look at it, or even ask another associate to look at it, and told me that I should find a Toro store to have it fixed. When I mentioned that I bought it there and that I was told to bring any item I had a problem with back to the store, the associate just shrugged his shoulders as if to say "so what." Later that day, I spoke to the store manager, Paul, who said that I could bring the weed trimmer in the following week and he'd be happy to exchange it for a new one. Paul even told me that the associate I talked to did not follow store policy and that's not how handle those situations are supposed to be handled at the store. When I went back to the store on the pre-arranged day, Paul brought out the owner of the store, Chris, who told me that I do have to take it to a Toro store and that he wouldn't exchange it as I was promised by the store manager. Why would I buy a product from Berger if they are just going to wash their hands of it when it malfunctions? If I buy a car from a dealership, that dealership deals with the problem car and tries to help the customer with the vehicle. I have bought a lot of stuff from Berger because I wanted to buy local. Now I'm going to tell everyone I know about this and urge them to go to Home Depot.

Foley's had BETTER PRICE than the Supermarket!…read more I decided to buy a Fix-A-Flat tire repair product for my son (who had a flat the week before) I went to my local supermarket, found Fix-A-Flat priced at $14, but figured Foley's might have it...and I like to patronize local businesses when possible. Turned out it was $12, two dollars cheaper, at Foley's, but I realized something else: Auto care, tools, and garden supplies are bread-and-butter to a hardware store, while they're just convenience items for a supermarket: stores like Foley's have to be well-stocked, and have knowledgeable staff who can answer questions. So now I will make Foley's my first choice for tools, because they know them best. But don't worry, supermarkets in Larchmont and Mamaroneck: If Foley's starts selling carrots and cauliflowers, I'll still buy them from you.

Powell has always been our first line of defense for all things Lamps and knew we'd get a brand new and rewired Moroccan lamp. Located a few doors down from Apple Farm and SAKS Off 5th, the husband and wife team here- have always delivered exceptional lamp service. Plus there's so much lighting eye candy. Powell's process is a bit off I think- but somehow it works and they do come through. I visited 2 weeks ago and explained my issue to Fran and asked how much wire I needed, length, on/off switch placement, etc. She fills out order receipt with basic name and # info. Powell Accessories will not give you prices on the spot and even though I asked, she just couldn't give me a ballpark estimate. Lamps stay with them while they access the situation. And between the time I dropped off my lamp and the time we got a quote was 2 weeks. Although I love my Moroccan lamp, my fear was without a price quote sooner- I didn't want to be slapped with a $500 bill afterwards! Goes to show you I'm not the lamp expert and all we paid was just $48!

I love quality tools and secretly wished I had the training and experience to be able to use everything in renovation/ construction. Here, the owner has spent years learning what his community needs and he offers wonderful variety and choice in many hardware product areas. He is especially attentive hardworking gracious and accommodating -- service is outstanding. AND if he doesn't have it, he offers to try to find it! I really avoid Home Depot..... Lowes is not as bad, but these old fashioned neighborhood hardware stores may not be the least expensive alternative , but the friendship relationship hands on practical advice and wonderful help create an always pleasant experience. And, GREATLY add to a comfortable bond to one's neighborhood.
