As much as we have loved this local eating joint Melitos, they recently changed the menu and a few favorites are no longer being offered. Melitos has a great community feel, with a lot of regulars and a cozy atmosphere. They have a very active full bar, and a small private room for larger groups or overflow. It's a pretty fast-paced restaurant and service is pretty good. One of the best things about Melitos is their daily specials, which include food items and great prices on drinks and beer. The parking lot is almost always jammed full but rarely is there a wait. Be sure and check out the white board specials for locally sourced desserts and ice cream. read more

Our first time here, nice hometown bar feel and the food is awesome! Happy hour not so good. I had the salmon avocado wrap and fries - both were excellent husband had the Caesar salad with grilled salmon -portions were very nice and the salmon cooked perfectly. Service was excellent!!! I just love stumbling upon some random delicious spots! Like this hotdog place! So one Monday night, my boyfriend and I watched MNR (Monday Night Raw) live at the Richmond Coliseum, and didn't want to spend/waste money on the "food" there. We figured we'd get so much more food for the money we would have spent there, and we totally did here! The place was nice and the bar reminds me of "CHEERS!" We arrived late, I forget what time exactly, but late enough that all they were serving from that menu at the time was just hot dogs. Fine by us! We both got the meal with 2 hot dogs and fries. Great neighborhood restaurant with a bar/bistro feel. Their menu offers more than their tagline of "famous hot dogs" would have you think. My new favorite item on their menu is their Reuben. I recently had the opportunity to check out this great restaurant that my mom raved about. when i walked in i was a bit turned off because there seem to be numerous employees walking around but nobody was acknowledging us. After about 3 mins we where told someone would be right with us. After about another minute we where seated. Our waitress was friendly,kind and attentive. I ordered the Richmond Cheesesteak. The sub is served with marina,which i'm sure is good on it but i dint try it with that on it. The sub had good flavor and had nice thick cuts of meat on it. I like Melito's. I have been there four or five times since moving to the Richmond area in January of 2015. I've been there several times for lunch and at least once for dinner. So far I have not been disappointed. I have found the staff friendly, attentive and professional. The setting is classic pub/restaurant and hasn't been too noisy so that it's possible to hear what others are saying in your party. There is plenty of parking, too. The food is very tasty. Today I had a "French Onion Dip" burger, which was very good and cooked just the way I asked; medium well. The fries were nice and crunchy, too. I had a dark beer I had not had (that I remember, anyway); "Legend Brown", which was on tap. Very good! I have not tried their desserts, as I am not usually in the habit of having them, unless it's a special occasion, but they sure sound good! The prices are reasonable. Today's lunch set me back just under $15.00 before tax and tip. If I can think of anything to add in subsequent visits, I will. I highly recommend Melito's! read more

Always great. Love the balsamic salad dressing. Salads are always fresh without any wilted lettuce. Been coming here since it opened and look forward to eating here for another 30 years! However, I do have a question about the flier posted in the front window announcing that someone named George Yarid is banned from eating here? I asked one of the waitresses if it was a joke and she said 'oh no he is banned because he is very fat'. Then another waitress added 'and he's stupid!' Then a cook shouted 'and he's broke!' Though we invariably stay downtown near Shockoe Bottom, we frequently trek out here to the West End for the chili dogs. This is a locally owned restaurant/sports bar/diner, that has full bar service - and the bar and booths are nice, dark, woody. The chili dog is among my favorites - the chili is thick and meaty, with excellent flavoe. They use a decent wiener and a nice bun. This is just a great dog. The burgers are nice,as are the fries. It seems recently the quality of Melito's has gone down quite a lot. I ordered a burger today (ordered medium - which was over cooked) and the meat was tough and was evidently pre-seasoned, and had an odd flavor, which was not good. The raw onions on the burger were shaved, limp, and had not a bit of crispness. My husband ordered the prime rib sandwich (medium-rare, which was also over cooked and tough) and it tasted as though it had been heavily seasoned with Montreal Steak Seasoning. The bread seemed stale and the bottom bun was soggy. Lately, both meat and fish seem to be quite overcooked, and one doesn't get the flavor of the entree itself, but merely that of the seasonings. The Karen's Coconut Cake (baked by a woman locally) is very good, and has a similar flavor/texture to a Tres Leches Cake. It is something I typically get to take home to eat later. I do not think they ever dust the fake plants above the booths - they are always covered with dust (which is above the diner's heads and food). There is currently Christmas garland on the ledge in front of these fake plants, so one would think they could have at least dusted the plants while putting it up. We had a very good waitress (Jen), who was very busy, but was attentive and timely. We have always had good waitstaff at Melito's. That's the only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 2 stars. read more

Was in Richmond for Thanksgiving and the topic of hot dogs came up (you know, just like every Thanksgiving). My Aunt who lives in the West End suggested Melito's. When our party arrived we were placed in the back room that only has two tables. To me it seemed odd, but we were told it was warmer. It actually worked out well because it was quieter. Naturally, I ordered two hot dogs with chili, slaw, mustard and a side of fries. I really liked the hot dog. It had like a tang to it. . . might have been the slaw. There was a vinegar taste that was unusual. . but good! The fries were super crispy which was nice. A touch more seasoning and they would have been perfect, imho. Service was certainly acceptable. I wouldn't rave about the service but there was nothing wrong with it either. The restaurant is all dark woods and reminds of a pub. Certainly comfortable but a little dark inside (even during the day). For me there was a bit of a disconnect between the ambiance and ordering a good hot dog. I didn't expect it. I've got lots of Richmond restaurants still to try but Melito's was certainly a hit with our group. read more

I went to school by Melito's, my friends all seemed to work at Melito's, and I always feel like someone is mentioning Melito's. I was also here to see the old Melito's before the huge renovation. It's so pretty now and they're in their bigger space! First of all, I came here to celebrate and didn't know what to expect. It was late in the night so I didn't expect the kitchen to have everything so perhaps next time, I'll make it there earlier. Anyway, it was very cold when I got in there but I quickly warmed up when I grabbed a beer. We had a salad, soup, and salmon with veggies. After a couple of the soups that were originally chosen were determined to be out of stock, the beef and veggie soup was up. I was hoping it'd be richer but it tasted a little greasy and a little chemically, sort of like that metallic taste from a can soup. But the potatoes were nice and chunky. The salmon was a nice portion and the veggies were good, but I have to say, it's my fault for ordering a fish dish in a place not known for seafood. The salmon was dry and the sauce didn't really seem to go well with the fish. It was a creamy sauce and I would have rather preferred something lighter and not as heavy. Usually when one orders salmon, we're looking for something that really won't weigh us down. The bar was extensive and there were quite a few people that walked in after we did. They seemed to enjoy the casual atmosphere where the music is supplied by the staff. THAT was a nice personal touch. I did notice their prices are on the high side and the little chalkboard menu on the wall above the kitchen didn't do much for me. But I might be back later on to try out some of their other dishes! They are known for their hot dogs (which of course are great!) but, everytime I go I always get the tortellini Alfredo! It is an appetizer but, I get it as my meal and can never eat the entire thing! Not a bad little spot, tucked away in a strip mall, and the hours are good. There are more things I need to explore on the menu, but so far, the food has been pretty satisfying. The pretzel in particular turned out to be exactly what I wanted, which is a pity since the stingy individual who ordered it wasn't really prepared to share. Next time, we'll get two. Lets start with the positives - Atmosphere - really nice. Big, dark wood bar and booths with a very classic pub feel. Plenty of tvs for watching the game without sacrificing a cozy intimacy. My Rueben - it was fine, not spectacular and not bad. Negatives - The french fries were pretty clearly the cheapest, frozen, 100 pound bag that the distributor carries. If this is the way you are going to go, fine, but sprinkle some sea salt on them for a little flavor, maybe. The service - when we were seated we were handed what we thought were the menus and were disappointed with the lack of selection. Turns out it was only the specials for the night - would have been nice to see a full menu before we ordered. Then our drinks sat on the bar for more than 5 minutes as our waitress, who was not busy, ignored them and us. I finally went up and got them myself. I don't think she ever made eye contact with us and never said more than was absolutely necessary. Not that I need a super-happy-smiley waitress or anything but this was definitely an instance where the attitude negatively impacted what was otherwise a perfectly fine night out. This. Place. Is. A. Gem. Been twice now, both on a Saturday afternoon. As a party of 2 and a party of 5, each time we had great, friendly service that can't beat! Similar to other reviewers, I love their Caesar salads. The one time I also had their special chicken and dumpling soup, and talk about comfort! I was so sad when we went the second time and it wasn't on the menu. In this cold weather, I could eat that soup every day. I did try their hot dog platter the second time there - $8.95 for one of their famous hot dogs, fries, and a salad? Sign me up! Melitos is one of the few family owned restaurants left after sprawl and chain restaurants took over the West End. In fact, there are very few that I can think of in this general area that are comparable. This place feels like it should be in the Church Hill, The Fan, or Carytown. The dark wood walls, bar and booths lend a level of comfort upon entering the restaurant. This place is usually pretty busy at lunch and dinner so I would prepare for a wait just to be on the safe side. Melito's has always been known for it's hot dogs, specifically it's chili dogs which are really good, I must say. They say it is a family recipe and I am all about keeping up traditions. For those of you with stomachs of iron, go crazy and get the Junkyard Dog which adds to the chili, onions, cheddar cheese, bacon, coleslaw and relish. A little too aggressive for me, but let me know what you think. Get a cold beer to finish it off while you are at it. If you are a Key Lime Pie fan, you might want to stay for dessert as there's is homemade and delicious, but a little goes a LONG way. read more

I love Melito's. It has that Cheers kind of atmosphere to it that makes you want to become a regular. The staff is friendly and warm and the food is very consistent and good. The food will probably not wow you, but it is genuinely good and they have a wide selection. I've never had anything I didn't like. My favorite is the junkyard dog. What is best that can be said about Melito's--- it's a good thing somethings don't change!! Melito's has not succumbed to trendy as so many restaurants have. This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants on the west end. When I used to live over here I would come often but not so much anymore. Consistently for the 15 years I have come to Melitos they always serve quality meats on on all of their sandwiches. And good size portions too. I had the sailor sandwich today and it was completely loaded down with pastrami and what they call their "famous" hot dog. My wife had a turkey club, which I sampled of course, and the turkey was high-quality meat it was not pressed cheap meat. I have never ordered anything here that I did not like and was not served fresh. The service is always consistently good here too, you are always greeted as soon as you come into the door. I was in Richmond for work with my new VP, and he mentioned he wanted to go somewhere "American" (when I offered up all of the Vietnamese restaurants in the area) so that he can watch the football game as well. Checked on Yelp, and Melito's was it! It's a bar/restaurant with a nice neighborhood feel to it, which I loved (thank you for saving us from TGIFriday's!). I must look like another girl who comes here because the bartender said that she knew me which I went along with. Anyway, the service was great, the food was excellent (I ordered the junkyard dog, a cup of chili, and a large greek salad... it was way too much food but SO GOOD). Boss got the prime rib which he quickly devoured. Thanks for steering us in the right direction again Yelp! I friggin' love Melito's! Been trying to head here for lunch whenever I'm in the area but since I work downtown, it makes that trek a little bit difficult. Recently, was in the west end for a meeting and instantly delegated that we all go to Melito's....always the best decision. Both times I've been here in the past month I always order the special hot dog because hot dogs are awesome and I kind of am in love with their awesomeness...if that's even possible. The hot dog was covered in chili, coleslaw, cheese and little bit of mustard....heaven...on a bun. The waitresses are my favorite....lucky to have many of them as friends. While Melitos offers a nice dog, there is nothing in my opinion that makes it stand out from the crowd. It's basic blocking and tackling. Soft traditional bun and thin dog covered in toppings like cole slaw, mustard or chili. If you like a traditional dog you'd probably love it. It's just not my taste. On the other hand, the taco special was awesome. Two Smoked boston butt tacos, topped with pickled red onion corn relish and cilantro cream with sides of both rice and beans. A wonderful mix of flavor and texture. And for $5 the price was hard to believe. So the next time I come back I'll probably skip the dog, but I will come back. read more
