I stumbled into Melba's on a Friday evening around 6:30 PM, not long after they had opened. The music wasn't even playing yet when I walked in, but the place already felt welcoming. I sat at the bar and quickly realized it was cash only, so I stepped upfront to use the ATM. The fee was $3, so I definitely recommend bringing cash ahead of time. I ordered an $8 drink, which was strong and very much needed--and shoutout to my bartender Tiffany, because she definitely took care of me. That drink was good, okay? After the first one, the drinks kept flowing, and the night really picked up. For food, I had the lemon pepper wings with fries and ranch. Even though I was already a little tipsy by that point, the wings were really good--flavorful, perfectly cooked, and hit the spot. And somehow, I even ended up with free food, which made the night even better. Just to be clear for anyone planning to come: they charge at the door after 8 PM daily, so make sure you have cash if you're arriving after that time. They also have happy hour, though I can't remember the exact hours--it may be 5-7 or 6-7--but they offer $2 off drinks, which explains the $8 price during happy hour. Also, while the bar is cash only, the food is separate and you can pay for food with a card. As the night went on, the music was on point--a great mix of old school and new school--and the vibes were just right. I made my way to the back where the dance floor is and fully immersed myself in the club/lounge atmosphere. I came around 6:30 and stayed until about 12:30, and honestly, I didn't want to leave. I had other plans later, but if I didn't, I probably would have stayed and danced all night. Even if you come by yourself, you won't feel alone for long. As long as you have an open personality and good energy, people will talk to you, dance with you, and make you feel right at home. I haven't been on a Monday yet, which is what they advertise for my age range (I'm 28), but I'm definitely planning to check it out. I also heard Sundays are house music, so if that's your vibe, it's worth stopping by. Will I be back to Melba's? Hell yeah. Did I have a great time at Melba's? Absolutely. It was a whole vibe. I do not recommend this business. Very ghetto and unprofessional... they lie to customers to get entry fee money and do not have any shame about it. They had us pay to enter for the dance area in the back and within 1 minute, they closed the back and made everyone move to the front and didneven have a dj. I am not a regular club goer, but love coming here. They owner always go out the way to make sure every patron is having a good time. You can celebrate your birthday here. The bar is fully stocked with high end brands. This place also has the best bartenders. Thursday nights is karaoke night. They also have tvs for entertainment, and kitchen that serves some good hot platters or sides. There is street parking, free after 6. Happy hour is ftom 5-7. read more

The drinks are definitely the best around. They're very strong so one or two is totally enough! People I know state they are tore up after the drinks so tread lightly. What I have a problem with is the owner! She really has a stink attitude and says whatever out her mouth clearly without thinking twice. So I was asked to leave after I spent my money on food and drinks "Infraction to the "dress code." If you have a dress code, that should be clearly posted for the public at least on your website. The food is overpriced but I can expect that. I am very saddened and annoyed because as a woman of color, we constantly hear negative. We let our hair down look, our best and try to unwind for another woman to tear us down with such a statement as "You can't dress like that in a crowded club?" My response was "What crowd?" It was like 20 people in there and four of them were me and my friends. I have never been so humiliated , when my best friend and I went to celebrate New Year's eve at Melba's Place. We arrived early around 8'clock in the evening, so that we would be able to get a table and seating to enjoy a good meal because my friend was famish. We went directly to order food and then our drinks. We waited for our food order for about 45 minutes. When asked how much longer would it be for food order, the cook said "15 more minutes. My friend continued to ask about her food. All out the blue, a large female security bouncer, came over to my friend and said " Miss come on miss, you have to go." They escorted her out the club without her coat. They allowed me to get our coats, while she waited outside in the cold. They did not refund our money. After an unexpected adjustment in my traveling plans this past week I landed it Baltimore MD, literally. I flew into DC and after spending a day there trained into Bmore to see what this city had to offer for a solo girl vaca. I crashed Airbnb style with a whole house to myself and set out to eat great Vegan food, meet locals and see what activities I could get into. This spot nailed it! Super friendly locals suggested Melba's Place for a mature, safe place to go out dancing solo. I trusted their referral and couldn't be happier. I called mid day to check Saturday hours and cover charge. Spoke to a friendly long time bartender named Will who gave me the low down and said he'd look out for me there. And he did. They open at 5:00 and it slowly fills up throughout the night. After 9 is a $5 cover, after 11pm is $10. I paid $10 and it was worth it for the great music selection, strong drinks and outgoing crowd. There are two separate rooms with Djs spinning, bars and dance floors. The front is more R&B and smooth soul with some funk. You can chair dance at the bar or get up and hit a modest sized dance floor. The back bar has a larger dance floor, is darker lit and Dj is playing house music and old school jams. I'd say a more energetic, louder crowd in the back. So you can go back and forth or chill depending on your mood. I met some very sweet woman there who were regulars (plenty of those) and they were welcoming to this new young face. You can tell many people know each other but I was welcomed by all with no issues. The crowd was "grown and sexy " as they like to describe it. It'd agree. I sat in the front room and hung out barside with Will most of the time until I got up to dance. One I hit the floor I never sat back down. The Dj was on point. I promised them all I'd definitely be back when I visit Baltimore again. If you're looking for a nice chill bar with great throwback jams or house/old school with a mature vibe (no young ruffians) this is a good spot. Dress to impress. Take cash. No cards accepted. But when you sit at the bar and see several people walking to the back where the music is playing you will follow them and realize that it opens up to a HUGE dance floor. My brother had been telling about Melba's for a few months. We gotta go to Melba's, I'm telling you! He'd say. Now, i'm not too much into driving 45 minutes for just anything, so even with his recommendation, it took me another two months to try it. I'm glad I did! The front bar is decent, a neighborhood bar vibe, but walk down the aisle pass the front bar, turn and whallah! You will be pleasently suprised. No! It's not H20 or Dream. It's Melba's. There are nice tables setups, two bars, enough bar stools to seat 100, a generous dance floor, a DJ playing a good mix of r&b, hip hop and house and the lighting is inviting. Let's talk clientelle. The ages, 25+. A good mix of ladies and gents. The bouncers are not like look at me, I'm a bouncer! The dress code is casual, no athletic wear. A collar shirt and no sneakers isn't too much to ask. If you get there early, there's no cover. Show up later, it's only $10! What more can you ask for? I can't judge the food, as we've only had the wings far, but the weren't bad at all. To sum it up, Meba's is a cool spot to just let loose and have a good time. This isn't the spot for being seen, or putting on airs. This is a spot for checking your DC/MD ego at the door and remembering why you used to go out back in the day: To have a good time with friends and talk about the fine lady you honey you danced with on the ride back home. Theres not a bad thing I can say about melbas. Ever since I was introduced to it I loved it and still do. Its on the other side of town from where I live but ill take that trip to guarantee a good night. The music is a mix of old and new school, the drinks are the best ive had in Baltimore and the crowd is 25 and older which Is always a plus. Ive witnessed one scuffle on a Saturday night but it didn't get too out of hand and I don't even think many people noticed. They do have a dress code that some say is strict but if youre grown and sexy than the dress code isn't a problem. Looking for a good grown and sexy Baltimore spot. It has been a while since i have been to Balitmore and was craving some good old school house, club and and r&b music. This place on the outside is pretty unassuming. I actually drove past it and had to turn around. There is plenty of parking as well all along greenmount avenue. Once inside, the bar area is in front and where you order food, the back the dance floor and two more bars. Very nice place! Security very tight, music good! I danced so much I didn't even order the lake trout or the fried chicken platter! The drinks were stiff and good and I had fun! I was at Melba's to celebrate two family members birthdays. It was located on a "questionable" stretch of Greenmount Ave. and l was reluctant to get out my car let alone enter this place, but decided to give it a try (after saying my prayers and making the sign of the cross). Upon entering Melba's, we were met by a tall, heavy man with a "security" shirt on, a heavy woman with the same shirt on and a lady sitting at a table with a metal cash box. The lady with the "security" shirt had a metal wand that she used to scan us ladies up and down and our purses (which we had to open for her to inspect and she wand those too). We had to pay $5 because we got there after 9, before that time it was free. As we made our way towards the back, where our party was, you went pass a massive bar area in the front that was well lite with numerous bar stools surrounding it. There was a small, what looked like a dance floor in one corner. The music was blasting, as you could hear it before you even got inside. The music was a mix of R&B, Club, house, rap and old school. If this is your taste in music, you will not be disappointed. As we made our way past the first bar area, we went through a narrow hallway, which housed a men and ladies restroom, and entered the rear of the establishment, which was huge. From the outside you would not think Melba's was this large. The rear area housed two nice sized bar areas, a large dance floor with a DJ booth, and additional restrooms. There were chairs and tables scattered towards one side of the area in addition to a counter that ran the entire length of the wall opposite the 1st bar area with bar stools. There were numerous security people in the rear area as well, which made me breath a sigh of relief. The bartenders were identically dressed in white shirts with black vests, pants and bowtie, which was impressive. I didn't get a chance to order any drinks, but judging from the crowd, almost everyone had something to drink from exotic mixed drinks to beers and bottles of wine/ liquor. Melba's also serves food and l hear the lake trout is good. The music had me on my feet the entire time l was there and all in all, l had a nice time. If this place wasn't so far from where l lived, l would have visited it a while ago, but l may give it another chance. read more

Word to the wise: Will. Remembers. Everything. And everyone. Seriously man, this guy has got to have one of the sharpest memories that I've ever witnessed. At one point, I hadn't visited Melba's in close to two years. Walked in one day and asked if I was the guy singing "A Change Is Gonna Come", on the night Obama was elected. Needless to say, it's easy to remember someone that remembers you so effortlessly. Nothing but First Class service from Will and the rest of the bartenders there. Melba's has been a favorite of mine for some time. Good music, mature and unpretentious crowd (25+) and Lake Trout made to order is what kept me coming back. As someone said below, don't let the surroundings fool you. It's on the main Greenmount Ave. strip, true. But, you'll definitely be missing a diamond in a rough [spot], if you let that keep you away. I never miss an opportunity to put my friends on to this joint. Tuesdays are my favorite night, by far. It's also the cheapest. Not that Melba's is expensive, but Tuesday's are just ridiculously cheap. Make plans to call in sick one Wednesday morning and give it a look.
