Mel-O-Cream Donuts are a great find in Springfield. This location is the best as it's open later than the other locations and stays well stocked with a variety of donuts. They have plenty of parking right off the main road. There's plenty of spacious seating inside. We had to get a dozen as they all looked really good. Our favorites were: glazed raised, cream buttercrunch, old fashioned and iced Bavarian cream. Honestly any flavor you pick will be delicious. I loved the butter cream and wish I had thier recipe. Glazes were smooth and delicious. Taj was super friendly and made me a fresh brewed iced coffee that hit the spot. NOTABLE: There was not a bit of oil residue in the box from any of the donuts after bringing them home. Donuts were nicely sized and I'd pick up a dozen every visit to Springfield. read more

The service here is always great but I keep giving this donut place a chance and I am not all that impressed. The 3 times I have been, the donuts do not taste fresh and I don't know why. This is supposedly Springfield's premiere donut place and I am never blown away. I have had much better donuts other places. Buy hey, maybe it is a Springfield thing. Every time I stop by there are people dining in with coffee and donuts, but maybe that is just the senior retiree crowd. We are searching for best donuts in Springfield. These were very good, so fresh. Service was quick and friendly. I purchased a dozen with variety to go. The cookies and cream were popular with my family. Looked like a nice spot to sit and have leisurely coffee and donut on weekend. Menu board said $19.95 for dozen but ours was $33 total so not sure what caused ours to run so much higher. We were pleased with choices and would recommend this shop. read more

I really wanted to love this local favorite on Route 66! It was noted as a 'place to go' on our Ultimate Route 66 APP. We try to support local businesses and we also understand that local favorites are exactly that - catered to local tastes. Here is what worked for us: Drive though, even though we didn't use it. That's a nice to have one The employee that worked there on the day we went was very pleasant and friendly. He was also there the day before we we arrived about 10 minutes until closing time. What did not work: The donuts ....they don't look fresh. They didn't taste fresh. The apple fritter was one of the worst I've ever had I took a bite of one of the cake donuts and it didn't taste good either. They have some secret ingredient in them...not sure what it was, but it didn't really help the flavor. These were just not good at all. The drive through location just off 6th, is open until noon every day, but if you come at 10 minutes to close there are ZERO donuts in the case. They have packed them all up into the "Mel-O' transport van and are taking them somewhere... who knows. So they are open for other items I supposed, like coffee, MERCH....but no donuts from the case. I threw the rest of the ones I purchased in the trash. Just not worth the calories. We are full time RVers and we travel around the country always looking for the hidden gems in the towns and cities we frequent. Too bad, this just wasn't a gem at all. And sadly there aren't a lot of donut options around town, so that's all you get. Even being catered to local taste, I'd imagine they would still look fresh and taste fresh...even if they weren't that that good. These were not... They make their donuts from scratch and they are fresh every morning. You definitely have to get to the shop early to get the best selection of donuts, or else they will be gone! The ladies are wonderful behind the counter and offer excellent customer service. The chocolate creme filled donuts are a piece of heaven! The maple glazed donuts are simply amazing! The jelly donuts are the best!! I miss Mel-O Cream and it was one of the best places I enjoyed while living in Springfield IL. Growing up in Springfield, we were spoiled at a young age by having Mel-O-Cream donuts. Made fresh daily, these donuts make it very clear that you'll never want to buy a box of Entenmann's from the end of the grocery store aisle. I mean never! Mel O Cream is Fresh. Gourmet. Delicious! So now that I don't live in town it's always on my "must eat b/c I already know I'm going to gain 10 pounds while in SPI" list. Sure, prices have increased. A box of 6 cost over $6 now. I remember paying 35, 45, or 55 cents per donuts, but hey, the donuts are still made fresh daily and oh so so good. If you're undecided on what to get, the cream filled crunchy bun is the best. We ordered at 6 AM and they were delivered quickly. Unfortunately, the donuts tasted like day-old donuts. And the filled donuts were seriously under filled and dry. Mel-O-Cream has essentially bullied all competition out of town due to nothing more than the misguided blind faith of its loyal Springfield customers. First off, NO LOCATIONS make the doughnuts that they sell. ALL Mel-O-Cream doughnuts are made the day before at the main factory and trucked in for sale. Alternately, if you go to a grocery store in town, you get Mel-O-Cream Prefried doughnuts, out of the freezer and into the oven to bake 'fresh' every day. None of the sales locations are company owned. The result is that Franchise owners are forced to sell an inferior product. It is easy to confirm all of this by the fact that none of the Mel-O-Cream retail locations have fryers, and the corporate Mel-O-Cream website proudly describes the production process. Mel-O-Cream donuts are improved by being microwaved before being eaten, but I recommend going to a bakery for something else entirely rather than paying fresh donut prices for day old donuts. read more

Been eating a Springfield staple for decades as an ex-trucker and someone whose traveled around this country on vacation I've yet to encounter any donut shop that has the variety of donuts that mel-o-cream has my favorites are the chocolate longjohns and cinnamon you can get two dozen donuts and probably not get the same donut twice. The chain shops have a store here like dunkin donuts and Krispy Kreme also l've tried both and they have good donuts also but their no better or worse than mel-o-cream I just like them better and i like to stay with local businesses when I can. read more
