Since 1932! Ok, these donuts are 90 years old and they are still making it greater and grander each time you make a stop in! Keeping up with history, the Depression this was when Mel O Cream began . Now they have not one store but around a half a dozen here in Springfield only. This local flavor speaks volumes. We have enjoyed this place on the two occasions we were in Springfield. The best is the oldest. Have an OG Glazed! You cannot go wrong. The best way to have these donuts is just warmed up. They have the best service with all smiles always. The yellow of the company makes the ambiance feel like sunshine. Now make sure and have some local donuts and coffee. Il'll see you here! read more

Mel-O-Cream Donuts are a great find in Springfield. This location is the best as it's open later than the other locations and stays well stocked with a variety of donuts. They have plenty of parking right off the main road. There's plenty of spacious seating inside. We had to get a dozen as they all looked really good. Our favorites were: glazed raised, cream buttercrunch, old fashioned and iced Bavarian cream. Honestly any flavor you pick will be delicious. I loved the butter cream and wish I had thier recipe. Glazes were smooth and delicious. Taj was super friendly and made me a fresh brewed iced coffee that hit the spot. NOTABLE: There was not a bit of oil residue in the box from any of the donuts after bringing them home. Donuts were nicely sized and I'd pick up a dozen every visit to Springfield. read more

The service here is always great but I keep giving this donut place a chance and I am not all that impressed. The 3 times I have been, the donuts do not taste fresh and I don't know why. This is supposedly Springfield's premiere donut place and I am never blown away. I have had much better donuts other places. Buy hey, maybe it is a Springfield thing. Every time I stop by there are people dining in with coffee and donuts, but maybe that is just the senior retiree crowd. If there is another donut shop in Springfield that has fresh pillowy donuts that don't taste day old please let me know where I am missing out! read more

We are searching for best donuts in Springfield. These were very good, so fresh. Service was quick and friendly. I purchased a dozen with variety to go. The cookies and cream were popular with my family. Looked like a nice spot to sit and have leisurely coffee and donut on weekend. Menu board said $19.95 for dozen but ours was $33 total so not sure what caused ours to run so much higher. We were pleased with choices and would recommend this shop. read more

I really wanted to love this local favorite on Route 66! It was noted as a 'place to go' on our Ultimate Route 66 APP. We try to support local businesses and we also understand that local favorites are exactly that - catered to local tastes. Here is what worked for us: Drive though, even though we didn't use it. That's a nice to have one The employee that worked there on the day we went was very pleasant and friendly. He was also there the day before we we arrived about 10 minutes until closing time. What did not work: The donuts ....they don't look fresh. They didn't taste fresh. The apple fritter was one of the worst I've ever had I took a bite of one of the cake donuts and it didn't taste good either. They have some secret ingredient in them...not sure what it was, but it didn't really help the flavor. These were just not good at all. The drive through location just off 6th, is open until noon every day, but if you come at 10 minutes to close there are ZERO donuts in the case. They have packed them all up into the "Mel-O' transport van and are taking them somewhere... who knows. So they are open for other items I supposed, like coffee, MERCH....but no donuts from the case. I threw the rest of the ones I purchased in the trash. Just not worth the calories. We are full time RVers and we travel around the country always looking for the hidden gems in the towns and cities we frequent. Too bad, this just wasn't a gem at all. And sadly there aren't a lot of donut options around town, so that's all you get. Even being catered to local taste, I'd imagine they would still look fresh and taste fresh...even if they weren't that that good. These were not... Oh, I'll have to wait until the next city and find a better option! read more

Save your money....the donuts are horrible, they were sitting out in boxes, on top of the counter. I knew we should've just walked out. the girl behind the counter was the most unfriendly person ever. I think she said 2 words to us....don't waste your time like we did. We ended up throwing our 3 donuts away they were so bad! read more

Mel-o Cream is my favorite donut place in Springfield IL. This donut shop is a legend in Springfield IL and has been around for many years. They make their donuts from scratch and they are fresh every morning. You definitely have to get to the shop early to get the best selection of donuts, or else they will be gone! The ladies are wonderful behind the counter and offer excellent customer service. The chocolate creme filled donuts are a piece of heaven! The maple glazed donuts are simply amazing! The jelly donuts are the best!! I miss Mel-O Cream and it was one of the best places I enjoyed while living in Springfield IL. I would recommend this donut shop to anyone passing through Springfield IL because it is worth the price and the visit. You will leave with a smile on your face! read more

I love that this donut shop offers a drive-thru window - because picking donuts isn't a time consuming choice so it makes it very convenient! We drove through and ordered an assortment of donuts as we had a large group and every one got what they wanted! I'm a sucker for jelly filled donuts and this one did not disappoint - filled to where it was leaking out! read more

This place is always great, and staff is kind. I have loved their donuts since I was a child. Quality is consistent.

Growing up in Springfield, we were spoiled at a young age by having Mel-O-Cream donuts. Made fresh daily, these donuts make it very clear that you'll never want to buy a box of Entenmann's from the end of the grocery store aisle. I mean never! Mel O Cream is Fresh. Gourmet. Delicious! So now that I don't live in town it's always on my "must eat b/c I already know I'm going to gain 10 pounds while in SPI" list. Sure, prices have increased. A box of 6 cost over $6 now. I remember paying 35, 45, or 55 cents per donuts, but hey, the donuts are still made fresh daily and oh so so good. If you're undecided on what to get, the cream filled crunchy bun is the best. Get there early though, those go quick! read more

The drive-thru was super convenient and staff were friendly and had masks on. The spiced donut holes were my favorite. Perfect bite and not too sweet. Would definitely recommend! I also tried just a glazed donut, but I'm partial to Krispy Kreme for those tbh. Sorry... will for sure be back when in the area!! read more

Mel-O-Cream Donuts - 1 Dozen apple and spice donut holes! ($2.49) delicious! - Donuts Near Me - Springfield, Illinois

I loved Mel-O-Cream donuts when I was a kid. I raved about them to my husband so when we were in town visiting family so we ordered a dozen glazed, some old fashioned and Bavarian cream. We ordered at 6 AM and they were delivered quickly. Unfortunately, the donuts tasted like day-old donuts. And the filled donuts were seriously under filled and dry. The price was reasonable and they were ok for the price but not anything I would ever get again. We took the rest to a family function for the kids to eat. read more

Traveling out of Springfield & wanted to try this donut business. Super nice woman helped us at the drive thru. She was patient with us as we figured out what we wanted & made some good recommendations. Donuts & coffee were very good - better than chains - but the service and friendliness really made our morning. Thank you read more

Mel-O-Cream has essentially bullied all competition out of town due to nothing more than the misguided blind faith of its loyal Springfield customers. First off, NO LOCATIONS make the doughnuts that they sell. ALL Mel-O-Cream doughnuts are made the day before at the main factory and trucked in for sale. Alternately, if you go to a grocery store in town, you get Mel-O-Cream Prefried doughnuts, out of the freezer and into the oven to bake 'fresh' every day. None of the sales locations are company owned. The result is that Franchise owners are forced to sell an inferior product. It is easy to confirm all of this by the fact that none of the Mel-O-Cream retail locations have fryers, and the corporate Mel-O-Cream website proudly describes the production process. Mel-O-Cream donuts are improved by being microwaved before being eaten, but I recommend going to a bakery for something else entirely rather than paying fresh donut prices for day old donuts. read more

We stopped here on our way out of town. They were all out of donuts except for powdered donut holes. The lady working gave them to my daughter for free. 10/10 on the taste and texture of the donuts. Would definitely recommend the donuts and the service! read more

Great donuts! Horrible management? If you're craving your favorite mel-O-cream donut, you had better be up early. Even on the weekends. I love an iced long john, but apparently I have to go get a second class one at Duncan donuts every week, because 8:30am is just too late to get one here. read more

Been eating a Springfield staple for decades as an ex-trucker and someone whose traveled around this country on vacation I've yet to encounter any donut shop that has the variety of donuts that mel-o-cream has my favorites are the chocolate longjohns and cinnamon you can get two dozen donuts and probably not get the same donut twice. The chain shops have a store here like dunkin donuts and Krispy Kreme also l've tried both and they have good donuts also but their no better or worse than mel-o-cream I just like them better and i like to stay with local businesses when I can. read more

Very good donuts at a reasonable price. Not as fancy as some of the new donut shops you find in Chicago. Straight forward selection of traditional donuts. I brought some in for my coworkers and I was the most popular person at work for one day. read more

I suppose it's really just a matter of taste and preferences but, personally I love these. The chocolate is better than any other. I read on one review site about how the people were unfriendly and found this to be completely untrue. Took 3 dozen home for a large group and the lady working was patient and helpful. read more

Highly recommend long johns. Great and friendly service. Not amazing doughnuts but pretty tasty! Would go back if I'm passing through.

I am not a fan of Mel-O Cream. The donuts are not of high quality. They have been the only donut shop in Springfield for more than 20 years and the lack of competition shows. The service is good and that can make up for the quality some what. read more

Dounts keep getting smaller but tastes good great coffee good .Always cleaning smells like a.hospital. Service is great.

Same building and decor for at least 30 years. Came back into town for a family reunion and ordered a dozen doughnuts. Taste exactly the same as they did when I was a kid. Now I am hardening my children's arteries with my childhood favorite. Great food as long as you only eat it once in a while. read more

Though skeptical at first, I must say they not only make good traditional doughnuts, but often have interesting and tasty one off batches. Do recommend! read more
