The donuts were okay. Nothing very special. Of course there were no jelly donuts when I went so I just tried the regular ones.

Every time I visit our Springfield office, they have donuts and coffee waiting on us. I love it. Thought about eating these while on the Amtrak headed to Springfield. Delish!!! read more

Mel-O-Cream Donuts - Bakeries Near Me - Springfield, Illinois

Mel-O-Cream had a bad run a few years back, but they have gotten their S- - - together and are back with a vengeance. Theses are classic donuts done right. Their Glazed Old Fashion is about as perfect as a donut can get. read more

Best donuts anywhere in town! Don't drive all the way to other stores and wait to know when donuts are done, Mel-O-Cream is perfect all day!

Mel-O-Cream has essentially bullied all competition out of town due to nothing more than the misguided blind faith of its loyal Springfield customers. First off, NO LOCATIONS make the doughnuts that they sell. ALL Mel-O-Cream doughnuts are made the day before at the main factory and trucked in for sale. Alternately, if you go to a grocery store in town, you get Mel-O-Cream Prefried doughnuts, out of the freezer and into the oven to bake 'fresh' every day. None of the sales locations are company owned. The result is that Franchise owners are forced to sell an inferior product. It is easy to confirm all of this by the fact that none of the Mel-O-Cream retail locations have fryers, and the corporate Mel-O-Cream website proudly describes the production process. read more

I like the concept of this local donut chain with a long history of being in Springfield -- I'm temporally residing in Springfield and have stopped in a few times on my way to work when I have a morning sweet tooth. The staff is always friendly and the donuts are pretty good...Better than Krispy Kreme (which are always greasy), yet not as good as Duncan. But it's a local business and the mom and pop shops will always get my patronage over some big commercial national chain. My favorites are the chocolate covered cake donuts. Their cake donuts are in my opinion better than the yeast glazed donuts. The chocolate covered yeast donut is just fine. Maybe I just like the chocolate frosting, it tasted homemade and was just about perfect. It would have been five stars but I really don't like the coffee - I prefer a little more of a robust and darker blend, but it is palatable standard donut shop coffee. I recommend this donut shop for the nice folks working behind the counter and chocolate covered anything they have in the old-school glass fronted display counters. Thanks for the sweet morning treat -- I'll most certainly be back again. read more

Deeply disappointed. Stopped in today for a chocolate iced cream filled. It was dry and quite obviously not fresh. In fact, I have had day old donuts that were fresher. The icing on top was even flaking off, it was so dried out. If this is what Mel-O-Cream has become I will find other options. Shame on them. read more

If you are in Springfield and need donuts, well, this is THE place. They have history behind them, have been around since the 30's, enough said..If a place can stay in business for 5 years, it is usually pretty good. This place has been here for generations now. Wasn't wild about the coffee I had, it was lacking flavor. But the donuts were good. The staff was super nice, and despite a small crowd, the line moved fast. read more

We love doughnuts and it's hard to find good ones, so Mel-o-Cream was a find! The old fashioned was crisp on the outside and moist inside, just the way it should be, with a glaze that isn't too sweet. Caramel longjohn- yum! And the glaze is made there, not out of a purchased tub. Try it, you'll like it. read more

Mel-O-Cream has pretty much kept Krispy Kream and all other competitors out of town. This is not just the blind faith of tradition that gets Saputo's its high ratings. Mel-O-Cream deserves 6 or 7 stars. Honestly, I grew up on Mel-O-Cream. There is a location 2 blocks from my house and I pass it whenever I go somewhere. I have been spoiled. I cannot consume any other donut because it simply would not measure up. They have tons of variety. There are dozens of donuts to choose from. Despite the abundant choices, you can't go wrong with the humble glazed donut. It is light as it needs to be, but unlike Krispy Kream, you actually feel like you are something after two or three Mel-O-Cream donuts. I prefer the Chocolate Old Fashion. To get an idea of how good this place is here's a little anecdote: My godfather grew up in Springfield. He moved to Texas. Every time he comes home, he'll get several dozen donuts of all varieties to share with his coworkers. Needless to say, his Mel-O-Cream supply rarely lasts more than a few minutes. read more

Okay, I'm sorry to write the bad review for this place. I came here due to the great reviews it got on yelp and I came here super excited about trying this place out - wow any doughnut shop that can top krisy kreme is pretty amazing in my book. Boy was I in for an immense disappointment. Okay, i loved the motif they had going and i really loved the Mel-o-cream t-shirts the staff was wearing. i woulda bought one if i saw that they had em on sale. Anyways......When I walked in the staff was pretty surly. i thought this was surprising considering that Springfielders are usually a really nice and friendly bunch. So I decided to order my doughnuts: I went for an original mel-o-cream. I avoided the cake doughnuts even those are my absolute fave due to another yelpers review, and I got a sugar twist. oh yeah! and a milk to wash the goodness down. I eagerly got back to my ride, ripped open the bag and chomped into the mel-o-cream....and ugh. It was awful. It was old and the icing was all soggy and wet. So i finished that off since i didnt want to throw it out and moved onto my sugar twist. it was a tough doughnut that was dry with little flavor besides its dusting of sugar. I've honestly had better doughnuts anywhere else - even those krisy kremes that are delivered to the store and start getting stale were better than these beauties I bought today. *sigh* read more

I heart Mel-O-Cream Donuts! Move over Krispy Kreme. You ain't got nutin' on these donuts. These donuts really are better than the rest. They don't leave that "lard-layer" of grease on the roof of your mouth like other donuts do. They come in many styles , shapes and centers/toppings. My ultimate favorite are the french donuts-yummy!Whenever I am back home I get some to eat now and always a couple dozen to go. If you are ever in Springfield and see Mel-O-Cream STOP THE CAR-you won't be sorry. read more

This place has been around forever! I am not from here and I wanted to bring doughnuts to a customer. You know it has to be good if its right next to a dunkin doughnuts and stays in biz. You can tell there were a ton of locals in the place. The staff was nice and quick and the prices were good. I wish my cinnamon roll was larger but I am just being a pain! Come here! read more

Really liked their doughnuts which we tried while visiting Springfield - the chocolate icing was my favorite. The long johns were very good too. The dough part was perfect. 96/365 read more

Mel-O-Cream Donuts - ows a half eaten donut - Bakeries Near Me - Springfield, Illinois

The original Mel-O-Cream of Springfield, many generations of my family have got doughnuts from here for over 50 years. I definitely suggest making this a stop on any trip through or to Springfield. Especially while you're on the Northside next to the original. By the way ask for the Blueberry Fritter read more

On our way to the Lincoln Tomb, this place looked great. I am always in search of the best donuts. This place is good. Cake donuts, I didn't dig. I like mine overly moist. They were too dry for me. The glazed was better. But what really saved it was the French Cruller. Light, airy goodness. Really good with the chocolate glaze. There's a line outside this place, and the drive thru line was crazy. My mom really loved her Bismark with pastry cream. read more

This review is for my dad. Mel-O-Cream was founded in 1932, in Springfield, Illinois. Which is exactly where my dad was born in 1935. So, you can say he's been going there for his whole life! He loves their donuts, and he keeps going back! read more

MMMMMM Doughnuts. Best doughnuts in the world. plain glazed and a glass of milk. You have to try this place. The one on ash is my personal favorite and the same people have been working there since I was born read more

Let's cut to the chase, I love this place. I grew up in Springfield and grew up eating Mel-O-Cream donuts. I absolutely love their vanilla and caramel long johns. Those are my favorites. You cannot go wrong here. Maybe part of my love for Mel-O-Cream is the nostalgia of my youth but my husband did not grow up in Springfield and these are his favorites as well. read more

Cream donuts with the chocolate icing are amazing. The chocolate wasn't a super sugary gritty coating, but a rich more like dark chocolate. Great history, decent selection when i went. Looks old, simple inside, nothing fancy, but very good. read more

Tasty doughnut business here. I'm a fan of their chocolate-frosted cake doughnuts - goof texture and the frosting is nice and chocolatey. Also, the staff at this location are absolutely hilarious and they were kind enough to sing Happy Birthday to a little girl who was turning 6! read more

Springfield strikes me as a donut kind of town and Mel-O-Cream is the best local spot to get your fix. They've got locations all over the city and their donuts are consistently excellent, which is helpful when the wind picks up and you need some relief in the wintertime. Warm coffee and generously proportioned donuts are sure-fire antidotes to brutal February mornings. My favorite in their line-up is the Oreo cream donut: a vanilla glazed and cream filled donut with Oreo crumbs on top. read more

Most fresh and delicious donuts in town! You know it's good when friends from out of town still talk about this place

Great little place but only gets three stars because when we got there at 9:30 they had few selections and very few donuts left.

Walked in at 9:30, so selection was pretty thin. I'll know better for next time. Blueberry fritter and pudding-filled with powdered sugar we're great. Staff very friendly. read more

The best donuts I have ever had. LOVE the cream filled. All are delicious. My family has been eating her for decades.

When we first moved to Springfield, I couldn't believe there wasn't a single Krispy Kreme in the area. Then I found out why... all the Mel-O-Cream fans would run them out of town! This place has a very loyal fan base, and for good reason. The donuts are good, honest sugary fried traditional donuts. Their "old-fashioned" donuts are what other shops call "sour cream" donuts, and definitely my favorite. And if all you want is a good and cheap sugar rush, pick up a box of day-olds or their donut holes. The employees are very patient (for those of us that just can't choose) and very friendly - like everyone else has said, they have probably been working the same shifts since the dawn of time, but they are happy to help you! Better than Krispy Kreme any day. read more

Born and raised in Springfield Illinois. Last 6 years I have lived in NYC the city that never sleeps. All I can say is I'm flying home for the 4th of July tomorrow and all I can think of is Mel-O-Cream white cinnamons. It is true that if you don't get up early you will never get your favorite doughnut, which makes little sense not to make more. Please don't read this review and get up early to get mine since I haven't had one in 6 years! read more

Out of towners, had to try it out due to reviews. Donuts are ok. Slightly over hyped. NOT best donuts in Midwest or the world. But I guess that's all opinion. Staff seemed very annoyed and not friendly. Prefer Daylight donuts read more
