There are so many Chinese skewer carts floating around Flushing that it's hard to keep track of them all. Some are distinctly different from each other, while others are simply additional carts by the same owner. Mei Wei (美味烧烤) has a generic name ("beautiful taste") but usually finds itself in front of Queens Crossing serving the bus crowd with skewers that sell between $2.00 to $2.50 each. (#1)
The brightly printed menu stands out since the rest of the cart is caked in grease and stains (#2) and a pillowy smokey aroma of coals and cooked meats make this hard to ignore. The additional side table of condiments, sauces are a nice addition and the guy doing the skewer flipping is efficient and quick.
Lamb is an easy go-to for any cart and they have done a good job in marinating the meat. Beef and chicken skin are also quite good and the fish ball + tofu are also underrated. While the Taiwan sausage, beef tendon, and roast pork are the more premium choices at $2.50 each, I found them to be less impressive than the initial ones.
I also appreciate the extensive vegetarian options, which include gluten, mushroom, leek, eggplant, and rice cake. The priciest choices are the lamb kidneys ($3.50), along with the squid at a cool $5. I have many other must-tries on my hitlist for next time, such as chicken wings, intestine, and their clay over rolls (i.e. 烧饼).
As always, these carts are cash only and practically Mandarin speaking only. I believe there is a QR code on the menu that allows for online ordering, but I prefer to do all of my ordering directly at the cart.
