$268.00 for a contact lens exam…read more That is not a medical bill. That is a ransom note written in optometry ink. Two hundred and sixty-five dollars to look into my skull windows and tell me what shape of plastic disc belongs on my eyeballs. I did not walk into your office expecting a luxury spa treatment for my corneas. I expected a routine contact lens exam -- the same basic exercise I have had before, including through this same business, at roughly a quarter of the price. So when the bill came back at $268, I had the distinct feeling of being mugged in broad daylight by a phoropter. If this exam was going to cost $268, that number should have been made clear before the appointment began. Not whispered through paperwork. Not hidden in a fog of billing codes. Not revealed at the end like the final twist in a bad carnival scam. It should have been stated plainly, directly, and unmistakably: "Before we begin, this contact lens exam will cost $268." Had I heard that sentence, I would have stood up, thanked everyone for their time, and walked directly out the door in search of a business operating somewhere closer to reality. This charge is outrageous. It is excessive, poorly disclosed, and completely unacceptable. No reasonable person would expect a routine contact lens exam to cost $268 unless that price was made brutally clear in advance. I am asking you to review this charge and provide a fair adjustment or refund. And I want to be very clear about what happens if this is brushed off. I will not slink away quietly and absorb this nonsense like a beaten insurance animal. I will share an accurate account of this experience everywhere people look before choosing an eye care provider -- Google, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, neighborhood groups, local forums, and any other digital town square where people still value being warned before they are financially body-slammed over an eye exam. Call it social media shaming if you want. I call it consumer hygiene. I will not lie. I will not exaggerate. I will not invent a single detail. I will simply tell people the truth: I was charged $268 for a contact lens exam, the price was not made clear enough before the appointment, my prior exam through the same business was roughly a quarter of that amount, and I would never have agreed to proceed had I known the cost. This is exactly the kind of customer experience that deserves sunlight, noise, and a long paper trail. Review the charge. Correct it. Explain how a contact lens exam became a $268 ambush.

I had fears of an eye infection, and sought out an ophthalmologist. Based solely on Michelle's…read morereview I checked out the training of Dr. Lindsey and found we both attended the same med school. That was enough for me. I scheduled an appointment (I was able to be seen the next day) and the visit went smoothly. The office staff was friendly and efficient, and Dr. Lindsey was delightful. Every good thing Michelle said about Dr. Lindsey was true for me, too. We had a good time chatting about faculty we knew in common. My fears of an eye infection were groundless (my discomfort was most likely due to allergies so she gave me some eyedrops). I had her do a full refraction and eye exam since I was already there. She found my current eyeglass prescription was fine and didn't need to be changed, and that my eyes were perfectly healthy (she said they were likely the healthiest she'd see all day). I'll see her again in a year, and look forward to it. If you need an ophthalmologist who is well-trained in diseases of the eye as well as the normal eyeglass and contact lens fitting, then I recommend Dr. Lindsey. Other physicians who are members of the group practice (The Eye Institute of Austin) appear to be equally stellar in their pedigrees.

She listens well and proposes workable solutions for every little complaint - like loading me up with samples of various eye drops to try with my finicky gas permeable lenses. Her staff is excellent, as well, and for as long as I've been seeing her, she's had the same assistant, the same optometrist, the same contact lens expert - the longevity in this office just says something. Also, she hates waiting at the doctor's office, so she works hard to stay on schedule, which I so appreciate. Doctors who realize that their patients' time is valuable, too, are much too rare. I'd recommend Dr. Lindsey without reservation.

She told me Dr Wong was very good at spending time with his patients. She was right. He explained very thoroughly my options and what he suggested based upon my situation. This gave me confidence in my decision. Surgery was better than expected, mainly because his pre-op person did a great job explaining what to expect and being coached and encouraged by Dr Wong all thru the procedure. It's not easy going thru this but his consistent encouragement makes it 100% better. All the staff are professional, friendly and on it. I've already recommended them to friends. Come see for yourself.

It was so welcoming which is nice when you're about to have eye surgery. Dr. Wong answered any and all questions I had regarding lasik. He took his time during all of my appointments. When his staff went through the pricing and procedure, she went through it all so clearly I didn't have too many questions after it. I can't say enough about my experience here! During surgery, Dr. Wong narrated every little detail which was comforting so that I didn't have anxiety lying there for 20 minutes not knowing what was going on. Do your research on who you think is best for you but I will say out of all the places I reached out to, this place was by far the best!!!

We saw Dr. Thai for our 10 month old as we had concerns he might have a strabismus. Dr. Thai was friendly and approachable from the get-go. He interacted so patiently with my son as he examined him, was extremely thorough, and took time to explain to us his findings (maybe even too thorough, but I appreciate knowing the full picture when it comes to healthcare). Even though it turns out our son had no eye problems at this time, we got the sense Dr. Thai really cared about our concerns. I've had dismissive doctors in the past, but Dr. Thai is the kind of healthcare provider I always hope to find: he listened, explained every step of his examinations, and he put us at ease. As for the waiting area, yes, it is a bit cluttered with toys, but I found that made for an interesting environment for young children. I'd take some color and clutter that puts my kid at ease over a bland, boring waiting area any day!

I had problems leaving my glowing review on a different website, so I'll try to leave it here…read moreinstead: My first experience at Austin Eye Center was 100 out of 100. Sabrina (the assistant at the front desk) could not have been nicer, so my initial impression was excellent right as I walked inside the practice. She was warm, funny, accommodating, understanding, and professional. And as others have said, the office is immaculate. It's extremely calming and classy. Dr. Makkouk was as amazing as his many, many 5-stars indicate. I have an extremely complex retina and/or neurological issue that several other doctors have, frankly, "passed the buck" on. I just really wanted to be able to tell my story, including the myriad variables that are potentially at play, and have a doctor try to brainstorm with me. Dr. Makkouk was SO patient and did just that - ranked the possibilities in order of likelihood according to his professional opinion. This meant the world to me, and I really could understand his solid thought processes because he explained things so well. He also offered to closely work with my other doctors and confirmed what he thought were the best next steps. For all of his extremely impressive credentials and education, he could have been arrogant and/or dismissive, but he was the opposite. He genuinely wanted to help. I could go on and on about all the positives of his listening skills, demeanor, professionalism, etc. The gentleman who was with Dr. Makkouk before me came out with the doctor and said something to the effect of, "You are a fine young man." I concur, sir!

I highly recommend SharpeVision for lasik surgery!…read more My pre consultation appointment, the surgery, and the follow-up appointment went incredibly smooth. It was overall a great experience. The worst treatment I have ever received…read more First, they didn't tell me they were going to dilate my eyes but did so, without my consensus, and then left me to drive myself home, in broad daylight, after the visit. Needless to say I was basically blind in that bright afternoon sunlight on the drive home almost causing an accident when I couldn't see well enough to avoid swerving into a center median while turning. Second, I was never notified the exorbitant cost of the dilation on checkout and only noticed it on the single bill I finally received several months later. Third, I told them I could not receive postal mail but they insisted I give them a postal mailbox anyway. They never sent me a bill electronically, only through the postal mail, and then they added late fees when I did not pay the bill but I never received. I only received the paper bill by happenstance. Fourth, I was told I would receive a glasses and contact prescription but at check out they only had a glasses prescription and they required me to pay $75 extra if I wanted that. Later, when discussing the exhorbitant bill with the billing department, they only credited me $70 even though my credit card statements showed I paid $75. Fifth, the glasses prescription I was provided was rejected by two different online providers as being an invalid prescription. Moreover, when I went to a brick and mortar shop to get contact and glasses prescriptions they verified that the prescription was nowhere near accurate and was unusable. Sixth, the building department was completely unhelpful. They gladly removed a charge here but then added it over here so the final amount was still the same. They didn't seem to care that the service was poor, the prescription was invalid, my safety was put in jeopardy for really anything else. There is nothing good that I can say about this shop and, personally, I will never go back to them and trust them with my vision.
