I wish there was a "0-star/get-out-while-you-can/booking-that-oh-so-cheap-megabus-ticket-you-cant-resist-will-be-the-worst-decision-you-ever-make" option. But since there isn't, my flagrantly dissatisfied review will have to suffice. Please read to the end. You won't really believe it otherwise.
While I NEVER(!!!) write reviews (too busy, and it's usually just not that serious), I am taking the time to do so this time, because a) Megabus deserves to be berated by every single customer its inconvenienced and whose trip it has ruined, and b) I have HOURS to wait for the next bus to Atlanta, so why not use this time of misery and fatigue to take out my frustrations on the source of said frustration.
I left Atlanta on Thursday evening for NYC. The bus was frigidly cold, so much so that the driver felt sorry for the passengers and tried putting tape over all the vents to block the full-powered AC pumping out of them. But Megabuses are often cold, so no big deal. I'm used to that much discomfort at least. Made it to NYC on time and continued on with my trip.
The return trip back to Atlanta (which is still incomplete as I write) has been the most awful travel experience of my life. I've literally taken buses in third world countries, and this still wins by far as the worst experience yet. We left NYC 2 hours late for reasons unbeknownst to us. We were told that the 2:00 bus had been held up by an accident, but there was no explanation for why our 3:00 bus had arrived and could not depart until pretty close to 5pm. After leaving, we were told by the driver that the restroom door was broken, so we would have to wait until he stopped to give us a potty break (pre-k anyone?). He finally stopped in Delaware, told us we had 15 minutes, and to hurry back, because we were already behind schedule and had now made a non-routine stop to boot. We frantically rushed to the restroom and back and began to depart for the rest of our trip when BOOM, the driver backs out into another PARKED bus next to us. The driver had been offered assistance in backing out, but nope, he refused, and instead cut his turn way too sharp and hit another bus. We then had to wait 2 MORE HOURS for the police to show up to document the accident, after which we continued on our journey. We arrived in DC at 10:45. Those of us continuing to Atlanta originally had a 1.5 hour layover in DC before our connecting bus departed for Atlanta, but since we were now close to 4 hours delayed, we had missed our connecting bus. Some foot the bill for hotels, many called Megabus to tell them a thing or two, but all of us were stuck in DC for the night. I was given a free ticket for the following bus, but that bus did not leave until 9am. Thank god for friends in DC.
So this morning, I get up for my 9am bus to Atlanta and even joked with my friends that literally nothing could top yesterday's experience, so it should be smooth sailing from here. The bus arrived on time. So far, so good. We all got our selves and our luggage loaded. Still good. Then, we hear that the transmission has failed, and we'll have to wait for another bus that we can all transfer to. WTF?! We were told it would only take a few minutes. 3 hours later, we're still there. At some point during that time, one of the Megabus employees told me that he isn't sure why the driver even brought that bus in the first place given that the transmission was already malfunctioning. Anyway, the bus finally pulled up as I was abandoning ship. I literally could not take another second of being given the run around, told 5 million conflicting things about what was happening, and being herded from here to there like cattle. Lots of others did the same. Megabus is literally the most ridiculous service I've ever endorsed, but this will certainly be the last time. I was treated as if I was the one at fault by several customer service reps before finally getting my trip refunded a second ago. At least there's one person within the company with some common sense.
PS: All the "you get what you pay for" comments are nice and all, but when you pay 200+ dollars for a round-trip ticket, which is what I paid, the logic just doesn't hold as well. Still nearly half the price of what a flight would've cost, but I would've gladly paid the difference had I known what I know now. read more
