I had to wait outside in the cold for the Megabus in DC for almost 2 hours without a warning about any delays. Once the bus came and we were about to head to our destination the bus broke down. I tried calling customer service twice and they refused to give me a refund and was told that I still had to take the trip in order to get the refund. How can a take a trip if I am still unable to leave in the first place?! Would not recommend this to anyone. read more

Starting with 0 stars: +3 stars for the super convenient location at 10th and H. - 4 stars for moving the station to North Capitol and K streets. +3 stars for moving the station to Union Station. -3 stars for not alerting riders of the change. +9 stars for regularly getting me to and from Philadelphia for under 20 bucks. -3 stars for allowing smokers to smoke while on the bus, thereby circulating second-hand smoke throughout the bus for the duration of the trip. -1 star for the spotty (aka non-existent) wi-fi. +2 star for the pretty nice guys who work at the station. I'm sure they have to deal with a lot of bullshit, and they've been fairly pleasant in pretty much all of my encounters with them. +1 star for being fairly clean, all things considered. Granted, I've never used the restrooms. -5 stars for forcing us to ride from DC-NY on a 90 degree day with no air conditioning (the bus ended up breaking down on I-95 shortly after departure; we waited on the side of the road for 45 minutes for another bus) and refusing to issue a refund after we were all promised them. This should be zero stars rating . We booked a return trip from NYC to Baltimore on Sunday 5/12 on the 6:30 pm bus. We arrived at 6:10 and as usual the rude unprofessional staff kept yelling at my husband to just go stand in line when he asked if the bus boarding at that time was the bus going to Baltimore. We complied and when I handed our reservation to the person in charge he said that the bus that was boarding at that time was the 5:40 bus and he could put us on that bus if we forfeit our seat reservation and pay $10. Since it was a bitter cold , windy and rainy day, we accepted and boarded the bus . The bus driver was driving aggressively all the way and was going to have an accident on the ramp at the exit . When we finally arrived it wasn't Baltimore it was Boston. It was 11:00 pm in the evening and Megabus counter was closed , no trains going to Baltimore and first bus back with Greyhound was 6:00 AM. I went on the Megabus app and found a bus leaving at 11:30 arriving at 8:30 in Baltimore for $150. We didn't mind since it was our only option on that dreaded day. My husband ran to bay 25 and spoke to the driver of ho asked for $120 in cash to put us on the bus . We paid him and he refused to give us a receipt for the money. The bus was making a horrible noise all the way. When we stopped for a rest, my husband approached the driver again and told him that we needed the receipt to try and get credit from Megabus and again he refused. After a very long 15 hour bus drive since we left NYC, we finally arrived in Baltimore. I received the survey for our trips and I started with the positive survey regarding our trip from Baltimore to NYC but when I tried to take the survey for the trip from NYC to Baltimore it indicated that I already took the survey. Megabus, those are two different trips and you shouldn't deny your passengers a second survey. Isn't it enough that you hire the worst, rudest and aggressive staff in NYC and Boston who pocket money from the passengers. Will we ever consider Megabus specially from NYC ; NEVER. read more

Wish I could leave zero stars. We got her in plenty of time to get on the bus, but were told that there were delays and we should have got an email. We didn't. Even checked our spam folders. Some people have been waiting over two hours. It's not like we're in a cushy lounge. Or even have a chair if any kind to sit in. We are waiting in a damp, dark parking garage. The wifi never works and the drivers aren't equipped to fix it. The driver told me to call Customer Service, but when I called and explained my problem, the representative hung up on me! I'm so glad Megabus is on Yelp so I can tell you all how much I hate it. I have used Megabus nearly a dozen times between 2008 and 2011 (have since switched to the DC2NY bus which is only slightly more expensive and has far better service) and here's what I've experienced on Megabus during my many many trips: 1. None of the buses runs on time, either on the DC side or the NYC side. 2. If you ask anyone questions on the NYC side, they will bark in your face and threaten you. Apparently, every question they get asked is like watching their mother get punched in the stomach. 3. Sometimes buses just don't show up. Not due to weather or anything, but just 'cuz. I have waited on the NYC side for over 3 hours (this was in Feb 2011) in the freezing cold with no one telling the waiting passengers what the h was going on. I got the flu on that trip and had to take off two days of work as a result. 4. The buses have spotty, usually non-existent WiFi, so I'm not sure why they're allowed to claim they have Wi-Fi on buses. I've never been able to use it, and even when it's just something as simple as resetting a router, the driver will not be bothered with helping. 5. There's a general stank that permeates the lower levels of the bus all the time. I just hate you, Megabus. The flu, the rudeness, the ineptitude. There are nearly half a dozen other services that are far superior to this company. I'd rather ride a flying monkey to NYC the next time I go up. read more

I bought two roundtrip tickets from DC to NY, had to change my reservation and after going thru all the steps the website stop working, called the customer service and was told to wait 20 minutes, tried again and make the long story short was not able to use my credit and rebook the trip. Here's the story from the first bus to Charlotte NC last Friday, Aug. 23 A man who appears not to have much money arrives to take the bus to N.C. but the driver won't let him on because his suitcase is 60 lb. (50's the limit). The man starts to cry. He explains he is going to see his young son, can only go once a month, and has no money for a second ticket. A passenger offers to pay any surcharge for the extra weight but the driver refuses, he even threatens to refuse passage to the Samaritan for "interfering." Other passengers offer to take some of the man's belongings into their underweight luggage. The driver refuses. The man, distraught, says he doesn't even care about the luggage; he'll leave it if he can only go see his son. The driver says he's not allowed to leave any luggage at the Union Station bus deck, that the man should have known the weight rule and didn't follow it. The man gets more upset. The driver calls Security to take him away, which three of those men do. Don't patronize this company. read more

Perfectly fine. Really no complaints. Was a bit fearful after reading the reviews on Yelp but, come to think of it, I think I actually prefer Megabus to BoltBus, considering 1) I got a better deal for my particular trip (think it was somefing like $36 roundtrip from DC to NYC including tax) and 2) Megabus didn't make any stops on the way up to NYC (though it did stop and drop folks in Bmore on the return trip to DC). There's a big (ironic) sign that reads "No smoking, drinking, eating". Everyone and their mother is eating everything under the sun...I guess one can develop a good appetite in 4+ hours! Anyhoo - the bus driver was nice enough (couldn't really understand the one message he said at the beginning but that was okay) and the bus was on time... I prefer the bottom level to the top of the bus (but the double-decker bus still looks kinda cool) cuz the bottom level has more space... yup, I'd definitely take Megabus again. read more

DO NOT DO IT PERIOD. Over the years I've taken a number of these types of buses between cities in the north east. Many years ago when I was much younger (and much more tolerant of nonsense) Megabus was always the worst among the bus companies. Consistently late, dirty, and unprofessional. Now as a 30-something my tolerance for this type of foolishness is quite low so I've often opted to take Amtrak. But Amtrak is expensive...So after talking to a colleague who recommended reserving a seat on Megabus (apparently it improves the experience somewhat), I decided to break my long-standing anti-Megabus stance and give it a chance. As I patiently wait in the line to board the bus, well-caffeinated and hydrated ready to handle what the next 4.5 hours could bring, we learn that our bus has been cancelled. It was 3:45pm and the bus was suppose to depart at 4:00pm. I almost threw up my hands in that moment. Of course Megabus manages to screw up yet again. A last minute bus cancellation was the last circumstance that crossed my mind as a possibility. As you can imagine folks were quite frustrated. As we all called customer service I could overhear what sounded like were some exasperating dialogues. One woman exclaimed "how about you have better customer service!". Under these circumstances, the only thing Megabus should've been doing is refunding folks and booking them new trips for at NO charge. But they refused to do that because that just makes too much sense and would suggest they actually give a damn about their customers. Once with Bolt Bus, our bus driver didn't show up. About an hour later, the next shift driver showed up. While it was an annoying inconvenience, Bolt Bus not only put all of us on that next bus, they refunded us no questions asked and the bus driver was profusely apologetic on behalf of the company. That's what customer service looks like. So back to this nonsense. As I spoke with my Mega Bus customer service rep who clearly had no idea what was going on, I decided two things. 1. I would be not haggle these folks to put me another bus bc I didn't have the strength to curse them out and 2. I would NEVER take Megabus again. In all seriousness, there are waaaaayyy too many bus companies out here that are just as affordable as Megabus and will not pull this foolery. While none of them are great, there's a much likelihood that you'll get to where you need to be at the time you expect. Megabus is almost guarantee you'll experience some type of foolishness. They sold me a reserved seat with a table (Baltimore to NYC). When I showed up and showed my ticket, I was told "You're not on the list" and "You have a fake ticket" and told to take any ordinary seat. Clearly, the operators had sold my seat to somebody else and pocketed the cash. I asked why they are letting me board the bus if I have a fake ticket, and I was told that it's "Because I'm a nice guy." The whole experience has left a really bad taste in the mouth. read more

Megabus is terrible. If you have change of schedule, every change costs $12 processing fee and you cannot make the reservations within 3 hours prior to departure time. Take Vamoose bus which allows you to change even just an hour before departure time and there's no change fee. If you don't know your future travel date the money goes back to be credit on your account, you will not lose it. Megabus is horrible. They have horrible rules and just want your money. So two weeks ago I rode the Tripper bus from NYC to DC. The trip was smooth and flawless. Left from a convenient spot, left on time, and in 4 hours and 15 min was in Arlington, right near my home. This weekend, I decided to travel from NYC to DC last minute and Tripper was sold out. I grabbed a seat on Megabus and that was a MISTAKE. The bus arrived to pick up, 35 minutes late, took another 15 min to load and then stopped within an hour of the trip...Not sure why?! It has been comfortable but that is it. We will arrive more than one hour later than scheduled and NOT because of traffic. I will not take Megabus again!!! read more

Rode on this line on my way back from DC to NYC. Instead of the more modern double decker bus that I was used to seeing, they used an old regular Coach USA bus. So needless to say, there was no outlet or wifi which they have advertised on their website. I could have tolerated the ride without those amenities, if at least the bathroom was in a decent condition. I sat close to middle of the bus, and could not bear the stench of the bathroom every time someone opened the bathroom door all the way in the back of the bus. I finally decided to try using the bathroom towards the end of the trip considering that I might not be able to find a bathroom after getting off in Chelsea. However, I found the bathroom to be worse than I had expected not only in aroma but also in appearance; I could not use the bathroom and had to take my chances with McD after getting off the bus. This was my first time riding with Mega bus and would be my last time. My experience with Bolt on the way to DC was consistently good with my previous ride to Philly experience a couple of years back. So I think I will stick with what I know from now on when it comes to long distance buses. read more

Look carefully, even the good reviews mentioned about the unpredictable schedule of the bus. Choose any one over this bus, Chinatown, Greyhound, DC2NY, Deluxe, you name it. I have only taken twice megabus and that would be the only twice in my life. stupid me i didnt pay attentions to previous reviewers. So the first time, i tool the bus from DC to NY. and we were told that the driver would be here in 10 min. we waited and waited, standing in a line in the parking lot. The driver finally stepped in 1 hour later without apologies. I understand some people may just have some bad day, maybe the next time would be fine. So stupid me took the bus back to DC from NY the next day. I was 30 min early. And the bus was 1.5 hours late!!!! Needless to say how bad the waiting location is -- no shelter, no seats, no apologies. All of us were standing in line carrying with bags and luggage. By far the worst experience I have had with megabus in one trip. I was headed to New York and our bus broke down not even an hour out. We waited about two hours for a replacement bus. On the way back from New York we purchased a bus for 5:30 pm we arrived at 4:53 pm to the stop. Our bus never arrived but according to megabus it arrived at 6:09. This was not a megabus it was a coach bus and the employees working at the departure destination told us that they didn't know where the 5:30 bus was but that some of us headed to Philadelphia and Delaware would go on the coach bus that arrived at 6:09 and the ones headed to DC would be put on the next bus as priority, which would departure at 7 pm. I have tried to contact megabus over and over about my inconvenience because not even their own employees knew where the 5:30 bus that was supposed to take everyone was at. One of the gentlemen who worked for megabus was constantly on the phone trying to get in touch with them trying to figure out where our bus was. I keep emailing and calling about the situation, but at this point they are telling me it's my fault that I missed the bus. Also one of the customer service reps even hung up on me after I kept trying to repeat my situation. I don't want another bus ticket, I will no longer be riding with megabus after my horrible experience. At this point I just want my money back. The lack of customer service and understanding is terrible. Especially when I have sent multiple pieces of evidence. The pictures have a time, date, and location. Also the lady who hung up on me, her name is Celia and the supervisors name is Susan, so if you get hung up on don't be surprised. Customer service is clearly not their priority. read more

My younger brother scheduled a bus to leave from NY to DC not only was it more than an hr late we called customer service together twice to either refund the trip money or reschedule for a later time or day the representative was rude and stated megabits would not refund any money until the time of the end of the trip and that the passengers had to wait there even if it took more than 2-4 hours for there bus and when j asked to speak to a supervisor she stated her company policy said the supervisor would not advise me any different and she had to disconnect the line to help other customers the mega bus representatives there at the actual NYC bus stop were rude and did not want to answer any questions regarding there delayed bus schedule the next bus is at 11:30pm and is fully booked so anyone on the 10 pm bus has to wait for the broken down bus to get there even if it comes at 12pm or 1 am what kind of customer service is this megabits is the most expensive of all traveling buses and yet the worst in customer service and providing on time schedule. The only reason I am giving Megabus 1 star is because the service from Union Station to Philly was good. Left on time, the driver was courteous and the ride was smooth. The ride from Philly back to DC (3 PM bus 9443) was horrible. The driver was rude! It started to storm there were children and babies (including an infant) and we were all drenched awaiting the driver to allow boarding. He sat dry on the bus while everyone stood by waiting in the rain, he waited until the rain stopped and the bus left late. He shut the wifi down and piped the a/c. When the gentleman with the infant asked if he wouldn't mind turning down the a/c because we were all wet, he ignored him. He had the audacity to come up at the White Marsh stop and smile as we shivered on the cold bus. I cannot believe someone could be so cruel. read more

I took the bus home from NYC and, for the enitre very bumpy ride, a retired USDA Tysons Chicken Plant inspector was describing the process of killing, cleaning, and preparing chicken. My father was on vacation and wanted to go to New York for the first time. So I bought him Megabus tickets for him, my mom and brother. I was not able to go but wanted him to enjoy himself. Later I was talking to him on the phone and he told me he had a horrible experience going from DC to New York. He explained that the bus driver pulled to a rest stop and went to the bathroom bought snacks etc.My mom and brother (mind you he is 11) gets off too along with some other passengers. There was an announcement made but the speaker was no good and they couldn't hear a thing. The driver gets back on the bus and my dad notice that they weren't back yet, so he asked her politely if she could give him 1 minute to go get his wife and son. She proceeded to go off on him and told him to grab all his bags and basically be left at this rest stop! Mind you it's few hours away from home already and my dad was shocked. He is a very calm and understanding guy but the bus driver made him so stressed and this was supposed to be a good vacation. Luckily my mom and brother came back and she was about to leave others as they are running back. We reached out to customer service they apologized and proceeded to say that once the door close the brake is released and is not allowed to open it again for anyone and she says "we are on a time schedule".I get it but the door was not closed yet and they were 2 hours late anyways. It shows a lack of morals and disrespect. I can't explain how frustrated I am because I trusted them to bring my parents somewhere to have a good time. I will not ride Megabus again and my parents aren't either. If I could this would be a 0 the only thing that saved this was when my dad took the bus coming back the driver was super kind and eased my dad that it was gonna be ok with him. i was travelling from the UK so I planned my trip in advance. I had hired a car to travel from DC to Memphis and back then took the Megabus via New York to Boston - $2.50 all in. Both coaches were on time and kept good time all the way. Ironically my flight home from Boston to London was via Newark and a bit of rain caused such havoc with the flight schedules I was wishing I'd gone back to NYC by Megabus. Not only is as cheap as fries (we say cheap as chips over here) because it goes from center to center it's quicker than flying! read more

The "provided parking" is so insubstantial that you'll probably have trouble finding a designated parking space and YOU WILL GET A TICKET from the MTA (park and ride) police. If i could not give a star I would. So were were suppose to leave out at 10am. The sent a text message that the but was going to be late and it all we to shit after that. When the bus arrived IT was for the 11am people. They removed us from that but added us to another bus, no apologies. And packed the bus with the 10am, 11am and part of the 12 noon people. Needless to say we did not get the seats we selected and paid for. We did not get the comfort of the ride, the driver was slow. And to top it all off the 12noon but passed us along the road along with a couple of others that departed after us and well to say that our 4 hour ride turned into a 6 and 1/2 hour fiasco is an understatement. OUR MEGA BUS experience was a MEGA MESS. But you get what you pay for. We took the express AMTRAK back and it was a much plesant ride. So going forward it will either be an Airplane or the Amtrak. You get what you pay for, which isn't great. Bought a round trip to NYC. Trip up was ok but trip back was terrible. Rude driver told us his shift had ended part way through so we were stuck waiting for another driver to show up for 20 minutes. Ended up being an hour past scheduled arrival time. Called customer service to alert them and complain. Totally useless. Bathrooms not clean and staff doesn't care when asked to replace toilet paper or add more Purell. Wifi doesn't really work. Only positive is the price point and the power plugs that come with each seat. I have taken Megabus before. It is worse than I remember. My wife and I are on vacation from Australia. We have travelled all over the US mostly by planes and cars. We decided to take Megabus from DC to New York for something different. I booked early so we had the front 2 seats at the top and I booked 2 extra seats as we had 4 large bags and it was cheaper than just paying for them. I am 6'5 and my wife is 6' and the legroom was better than some of our flights. The uber from the hotel to the airport in DC was USD25. The total cost for the trip to New York on Megabus was USD32 for the 2 of us. Unbelievable value. The driver was excellent. The check in was simple and on time. My wife, I, and my in-laws did a round-trip from DC to NY and back. Megabus was awesome. They have clear, identifiable spots to catch the bus based on the e-mail confirmation. The bus arrives approximately 10-15 min early. The bus was a double decker with plenty of room with 1 bathroom. The bathroom was pretty clean. We got front seats on the top and the views there were awesome. Everything was so smooth....e-mail confirmation, nice video that showed the safety features of the bus, and professional staff ensuring we got there on time. No complaints what so ever.... read more

I had a good impression of this bus line, based on several positive experiences prior to this weeks trip. However, when I got ready to go to the stop to take my trip this time, I discovered they had moved the stop to a parking lot NOT near any coffee shop etc. where you could wait. No problem until you have a bus not show up... earlier this week, June 30, 2011, Megabus had multiple buses (at least 4) show up over 2 hours late. In one case, a busload of passengers waited in the hot sun (no benches, no shelter or shade at the stop) for almost 5 hours. Our group got off easy - we only waited 2-1/2 hours in the noon day sun. Two people passed out, the fire department came, an ambulance took them to the hospital, and the police showed up to do nothing - but were probably there to keep order!!! The passengers were very civilized, but this company is not... I pray they are sued right down to their socks for putting people in an inhumane situation, waiting for hours in the hot sun - no water, no shelter, and worst of all, no information on when we might expect to leave. I completed my trip - 12 hours for a 5 hour trip - sunburned, humiliated, and exhausted. No amount of savings would make me patronize this line again; and neither will anyone else that I know. The lack of information and organization is appalling - not a business model that can possibly work unless they correct the management part of the equation. Very disappointed. read more

Absolutely awful. I think generally people choose megabus if they are desperate and cannot get home on any other bus service. Last time I had to wait 2 hours after my scheduled leave time to even get on the bus. Not to mention the disorder when they told us they were going to save time to stop only in Washington, DC but ended up stopping in Baltimore to drop of 3 people off a FULL bus. The lack of communication and poor service and disorder will surely make sure they will not have my business again. Id rather pay 75 dollars for a train then deal with them again. read more

I unfortunately found out about this because of an extremely frustrating trip yesterday on a double-decker bus from NYC to DC. This article actually infuriated me, because it means that Megabus is not only knowingly running overweight buses, but they are doing so without a solution in place for when they are caught doing it. Case in point, my 10:30am bus was boarded at 10:14am and we headed off, only to be stopped 5 minutes into our trip by the Port Authority police. Our bus was weighed and after 20-25 min of being stopped, we were told we had to go back and 'redistribute the weight' on the bus. What followed was 2 hours of inactivity, confusion, miscommunication and lost luggage. Our bus had to move out of the way, so the 11:30 bus could leave on time, and were moved to a completely different location as the 12:30 bus left...on time as well. At this other parking lot, there were 2 other buses (3 in total) and 4 Megabus employees. We were initially told to board one of the other double-decker buses...all of us...and our luggage. A few of us explained to the employees that this would not solve the overweight issue, since it would be the same weight. Over the next hour, we were told many different things about who should go on which bus, and that we shouldn't worry about which bus our luggage was on, it would be waiting for us. Not feeling very confident about the Megabus employees, I took my bag to the bus that I ended up on. One man trusted that his luggage would be waiting for him at the Baltimore stop, but it (shockingly!) was not. They were going to send it up on the next bus. Right. I hope he eventually ended up with his luggage. I give them 2 stars, because I've used Megabus before, with nothing more than a few minor issues and because they promptly refunded the value of yesterday's ticket. But that doesn't make up for the fact that 1- they are knowingly running buses that are against the law, and 2- the blatant incompetence of their staff. I will start with one simple word, HORRIBLE. The bus loaded on time and all the passengers were seated ready to go at our scheduled departure time of 5:30. We did not leave until 5:50 with no apparent reason for the delay. We hit some traffic coming out of DC (to be expected) but once the roads cleared our bus driver was still driving at the same speed of about 35-40 on wide open highways. Then we stopped to pick up more passengers which had not been indicated on the website when I purchased the ticket. This process took approximately 40 mins even tho only 10 or 12 people boated the bus. With the addition of the new passengers our bus driver resumed his snails pace drive onwards to NYC. Somewhere is southern jersey we came to a crawl again. It turns out we were stopping at a rest stop, however, the passengers were not allowed off the bus and apparently the bus driver was switching out for a new driver. Was the announced or explained? No. I am writing this review on my way up to NYC not on the alleged wifi on the bus but rather the 3G on my phone 10 minutes after we are due to get in 90 miles away. DO NOT TAKE MEGABUS. I have traveled with boltbus in the past and have had an OK time with them- never anything coming close to this train wreck. I thought I would save 7 dollars and try a new company and I am regretting that decision every second. read more
