GARBAGE (DC to NYC) After 2+ hours of waiting for a bus to arrive, we were told there was no ETA for the next bus. This was after 9:00 p.m. Finally opted to make the drive ourselves and pay the tolls, etc. Asked customer service for a refund. They did not offer to refund even a portion of the cost or even bother apologizing for the lack of communication regarding the extensive delays. They charged extra to sign up for a text message service to communicate delays, etc. and was not sent a single text about the prolonged delays. I will never use this scam again. read more

Wow. I've been a loyal customer for years but Megabus has been getting worse and worse. Recently, I took Megabus from DC to Philly. The transmission blew on the bus (we were already running late) and we were informed we'd have to wait two hours for a new bus. Of course, the delay and waiting on bus #2 was going to make me late for my friend's wedding. Ended up crawling around trying to get my suitcase from the luggage department and sharing an Uber for over an hour with some other passengers. No refund, just a minimal amount of money towards my next ticket. I call to request a refund instead. No dice. No, they won't let me speak to a manager. I asked Megabus why they advertise a service that is consistently unavailable, specifically electrical outlets. The response was that they were sorry to hear their advertised power outlets were not working, but since this is a free service to their customers they don't offer refunds. I did not request a refund -- I asked why they advertise a service they do not consistently provide. Megabus may call it free. Megabus sells it as part of their service and then it just supposed to be fine when they do not provide the service. Following is what they post on their website. Both trips were on a Megabus operated coach, not a substitute. "On Megabus operated trips the motor coaches are equipped with onboard restrooms, power outlets, three-point seatbelts, reclining seats, free Wi-Fi, and free entertainment through Megabus RIDE! Rest stops will be provided on our longer trips." On top of the lack of power in the outlets, the seatbelts did not extend and the seats on the 1st level near the luggage bay did not move. Anything you cannot get if you do not buy a ticket is not free. If they are not going to keep their fleet fully operational as advertised why are they allowed to advertise that they are????? Megabus as a company clearly does not care that its advertising is untruthful. I will simply share this as a reason not to use your service where ever possible. read more

We just got back from a 2 day trip to NYC using the cattle car that they call Megabus. Perfect mode of transport if you do not need any legroom at all and if you butt finds extremely uncomfortable seating acceptable. Add on to it random cancellations, for service in NYC and a totally unacceptable ride riddled with delays from the start on our return. From Baltimore or DC. Do your research. Amtrak can be less expensive, more on time, better service, food enroute for purchase and more than one bathroom. We were a late ride from NYC due to cancellations and delays and the reading light overhead would not turn off. This was my second and last time to use MEGABUS. NEVER AGAIN read more

So this is my 100th review. I was planning on saving it for something epic like Ben's Chili Bowl or Ray's Steaks, but it looks like it is going to be the Megabus which is now taking me to Morgantown West Virginia to pick up the next version of the roadbeast (the name I give all my cars). The last one, The Mach VII, was a noble steed and hopefully the Mach VIII will be just as cherry. So it is the Megabus that now fulfills my dreams of transportation. Cruising down the road with free wifi and a fair amount of space. Another thing which is rather cool about The Megabus is that you have to get your reservations and pay online,which seems to keep the riffraff off the bus. The last time I did the Greyhound thing I had to save some 13 year old from being molested by some parolee/mental patient..definitely not a good day for all concerned. However, there was none of that foolishness this time around. And when 3 nefarious looking dudes tried to get on without reservations, the conductor simply pointed out that they needed to learn how to use a computer. Yes, another reason to stay in school, guys. On the whole, the Megabus made my day. I like to live by the old adage "You get what you pay for". Anyway. My experience with Megabus was great. We caught the bus late one night and sat on the top floor. Plenty of space. Clean. Free Wifi for my iphone. All the tolls were paid as we zipped throught the states. I took a nap and woke up in New York. Concrete jungle where dreams are made of. So as much as as I love the convenience and the business model of this bus service, I absolutely detest the people that run this service. Rude beyond imagination and absolutely in considerate.. The fact that this service is reliable, quick, convenient and safe with free wifi is a HUGE plus - I absolutely agree to that. But the people who run it.. Ugh! Awesome, cheap ticket to Philly! Sign me up! I paid $3.50 for this bus ride so I wasn't expecting much. I was walking towards the bus but they weren't loading it yet and asked me to wait under the covered area. It was pouring rain so I really didn't see the point in that. Someone was waiting with a baby and they should've let her in the bus early!!! I didn't care much for the bus drivers and the service they gave. Also didn't like the bus stop said 10th and H so the taxi driver dropped me off there but the bus was on the other side of the parking lot so I had to drag my 50lb luggage to the bus. They should put on the instructions to go to that street closer to where the buses park. It is especially helpful to people that do not live in the area. It said free wifi but it wasn't on during the entire trip. I don't know if they needed someone to tell them that you were going to use it... No communication. I like the electrical outlets though. I was able to charge my cell phone on the way up to Philadelphia. It did leave on time and arrived close to the estimated time of arrival. They did drop us off in the rainy area and I was confused which building in Philadelphia was the transit station. I don't understand why the drop off couldn't be closer to the building so people wouldn't step out in the rain. I was born and raised in San Diego so I am not used to the pouring hard rain. I don't even know where my umbrella is at so I didn't bring one on my trip or rain type clothes. Disappointed to see so many negative 1-2 star reviews for Megabus. This is one time I am glad I did not check the Yelp reviews prior to riding. I had a great experience this past week. I compared MegaBus Reserved seats to Amtrak and found that Megabus was $45 per person whereas Amtrak wanted $190 per person DC to NY (Round-trip). You cannot beat the price and the bus was actually quiet and comfortable (aka amble leg room and head space). I was glad I reserved seats as I noticed most couples were split up due to no seats together (people love the window seats). Where the bus stops in NY is really "up and coming" and it is nice to get off the bus and head down 9th St and get a real NY bagel. The alert system for changes to the schedule worked as our bus to NY had to change it's drop-off point due to road closures for UN and Pope. The bus stopped a few streets from it's usual location and it was still on time. I love that each seat has a power outlet. I gave 4 stars as I'd say the internet is "questionable" as it either works or it does not work. On the ride from DC to NY, only one hotspot appeared and it was named Hot Potato. Hot Potato was password secured and no one was able to use the internet the entire ride. On the ride from NY to DC, the internet works and was listed as Megabus as described. The bandwidth was very poor (worse than airline WiFi), don't plan on uploading those photos to FB on the trip home. I found the bathroom on the bus to be clean and satisfactory. The other passengers were quiet and seemed non-threatening (no giggles, snores, farts or long convoy's on the cell). All considered, I'd ride Megabus again. As a frequent traveler from DC to NYC, I have taken Megabus countless number of times. After my last two experiences, I can honestly say I will never take Megabus from NYC again. When leaving from DC, the bus has generally left on time, the staff has been friendly and helpful, and the bus itself was in good condition. In NYC the organization is completely lacking. The last few times there were hundreds of people waiting in a parking lot with no direction or idea of when the bus is going to leave. The bus is ALWAYS late, it never seems to be clean, and the staff is incredibly rude. This winter we were coming back to DC and the man checking people in gave our seats away to people paying cash to get on the bus. This resulted in there being no seats for us and others who had reservations. We were told that there was nothing they could do and we should call customer service. We had to wait over an hour in the freezing cold to get onto the next bus and they did not seem apologetic at all. We called customer service and over an hour later we got through to someone. They gave us a voucher for a one way to ticket to use on our next trip. When we tried to redeem the voucher, they had lost our confirmation number and we were on the phone for close to an hour and a half trying to to book our tickets. Then once again when we were coming back to DC, we were redirected to 4 different lines, there was no communication, and our bus left 2 hours late and made an unscheduled stop in Baltimore. After that incident we promised ourselves we would never use Megabus again. At first the cheap tickets were worth a bit of hassle. Now, the tickets are rarely cheaper and the frustration of dealing with their disorganization and lack of customer service has left me no choice but to boycott them. read more

I generally use Megabus to get between DC and NYC. Time: Don't take this bus if you are in a rush or in a hurry. If you "cry" every time you're late, you have bigger issues than the Megabus. There is almost always traffic unless you're traveling at weird hours, so be ready to deal with that. They offer buses like every 30 minutes so take the one that's an hour before you need to be at your destination...it's not rocket science. Value: It's $20 each way which is what you would pay in tolls alone let alone gas. Definitely worth it. If you book far enough in advance, you can get the tickets for $1 each way (I've been able to do that once). Location: For me personally Union Station is more inconvenient than 10th & H, but I'm sure it's better for a lot of people so probably a smart business move. But you really do have to weave your way through Union Station to get to the bus stop. Amenities: You get free Wi-Fi, ample leg room, outlets and fairly comfortable seats...what more do you want for $20? Seriously. If you're looking for a bus equivalent of the Ritz-Carlton, don't book Megabus. I've had fairly good experiences with Megabus, but again, they are not amazing and could use some work, therefore the three stars. read more

Megabus is what it is - really cheap transportation to New York City! My teenagers and I took the bus from DC to NYC and back in one day. We had reserved seats going and coming back - and I can't say enough good things about those. The bus ran out of seats both times (at least I think it did because people had to walk away). On the ride to NYC we sat downstairs at a table. I would recommend that. I liked it much more than being up-top in the front row. One surprising thing to us was how quiet the bus was - going there and coming back. It was quieter than the quiet car on the train. The Wi-Fi is terrible. Don't even bother - but it is nice to have outlets to charge phones. We just used our cellular service for the trips. The really only negative thing I can say is that when we got on in NYC to come back, there were still full trash bags on the upper deck and one of our seats was full of crumbs and trash. I can't say it's worse than what I've seen on an airplane, but it would be nice if they could empty the trash each trip. read more

"Suicide Seats" on the 2nd level front is thrillingly awesome especially when going under bridges and signs. At any moment you feel like you could be off with your head. Bus DID NOT depart on time. So after reading review after review I decided to go with Megabus since they actually had the time available for my trip. On my way to NY I didn't know if I'd get a seat on the bus because the line was SUPER long. However, I was able to get a seat at the top of the double decker bus. The bus arrived on time and made it to NY on time as well. My only complaint with my arrival trip is that the outlet didn't work and I was unable to charge my phone :-( so imagine taking a trip to NY alone and not having service. As I departed NY the lines were longer than they were when I left that morning. Once again I got a seat at the top and this time the outlet worked (happy, happy, joy, joy). The ride both time were smmoth. The bus was clean but I found out the reason why I hate bus bathrooms. I'm not going to say it was gross but just a strong pissy smell. I didn't use the restroom the morning I left but that area smelled lysol fresh. If this is your first time riding Megabus know that there isn't any parking. So you have to be dropped off. Also try not to sit next to the restroom and sit close to an outlet. read more

I only rode the bus once, this weekend and I HATED it. I still feel like crying from my experience. While my eventful weekend was not just due to Megabus, they contributed greatly. Don't plan to get any real sleep. The seats are very uncomfortable and the passengers speak loudly on their phones. They are not mindful of passengers. Depending on the time you leave, you will also find people have alarms on their phones that will go off at various times in the morning. After hearing 30 unique alarms from 5 am to 7 am, you will go bananas. My friend rides Megabus all the time from DC to Charlotte and she swears this stuff only happened this weekend because I was riding. I was against taking the bus because Amtrak would have gotten us there faster with less hassle. I couldn't even write this review on the bus because Wi-fi SUCKS!!! Washington DC to New York City on May 20 2022. Terrible all around experience. Original trip was cancelled the day before my departure, so I had to scramble to find a replacement trip for the same day. Return trip via Megabus, NYC to DC on ma 23 cancelled while I was in route to DC from Christiansburg VA. Megabus driver was dangerous. Speeding, honking at drivers, flashing high beams at drivers, missed her exit in Philadelphia and tacked on another 30+ minutes to the trip. Vehicle was extremely hot and uncomfortable inside. OMG...not sure what I was thinking when I decided to travel from Charlotte to DC on a bus. I am honestly too old for THAT! First, the bus was late arriving to Charlotte. Second, it smelled on there. Third, it wasn't clean enough for me. If you MUST ride the bus, make sure you bring something to cover the seat where your head is, imagine how many different heads of hair and scalp have been touching that area. Fourth, the wi-fi didn't work to or fro. Like, when does it work, exactly? Fifth, on the way back my daughter was with me, and although I warned her not to drink, she did and had to use the bathroom which she said was disgusting. I figured it would be. Now all of the tickets are $25 to $35(each way) and they changed the time leaving Houston, so now I have to leave work TWO hours early to catch the bus at 4:45pm on a flippin' Friday. Every time I have taken a mega bus, I have cried. Most of the time it's from being yelled at by the employees, other times it's just from seeing the sad, scary baby plastered across the back of the bus. One time my Megabus driver stopped on a bridge on a main highway in the middle of the night. From the upper deck I looked out the window to see highway below as we rocked back and forth towards the safety rail of the bridge. I remember feeling relief as the bus leaned towards the edge, thinking I would finally be free from this Megabus hell and that yellow hat wearing baby satan, but the bus started and pulled away before we could all escape. Be warned - Megabus is not for the faint of heart. Even the most thick skinned will be brought to tears. If you can survive the public humiliation of a Megabus driver screaming at you over the intercom, you can survive anything. read more

I'm writing this on a broken down Megabus, it's 3:30 in the morning and we've been on the side of the road for almost 3 hours. What's worse is that this is the 2nd time this has happened on a bus I have taken to Columbia,the last time it was a 5 hour delay due to transmission. I think Megabus is a great concept but not taking the time to make sure a bus is fully serviceable before going into use is unacceptable, and unsafe. It's bad enough when the WiFi doesn't work which is one of the reasons I choose Megabus instead of driving or flying. But these failings are testing even someone who is normally very patient. Right now I feel claustrophobic but we can't open the windows and the air is off while we just wait. A young baby downstairs is crying, and this unacceptable. Some lady is missing her flight. A charter bus could have been arranged locally to avoid this problem, though last time (I'm assuming to save money), the powers that be finally relented to send a bus after 5 hours. I feel bad for the driver being put in this position, she probably has enough to deal with traffic and managing passengers. I rarely write bad reviews, I don't like to criticize a business publicly if there are just small things to fix or my taste is different. But this is different, Megabus needs to fix these problems otherwise competitors are going to come in and do it right, if not better. read more

No way will I ever take this bus line again. I've taken several bus lines NYC/Boston and MegaBus was hands down the worst bus line....even worse than the Lucky Star. There was no plugs to be found for charging and the wifi was super slow (useless). The seats are tiny and uncomfortable and the bus feels just janky. Peter Pan is not great but still far better than MegaBus. Peter Pan had chargers and the seats were a bit more comfortable...and they depart NY out of Port Authority but with MegaBus you have to stand in the rain way on the west side....and a pain to get to. read more

We were driving in the only lane that was green when a mega bus rode up next to our passenger side in the red lane and almost hit our car . Trip: 8/13/10 Washington to Philadelphia Usually I take Amtrak back and forth from DC to Philly/NYC but budget didn't allow it last week. I was more than skeptical about taking Megabus because of the tepid reviews here. I'm also a little socially awkward and don't like disorganization, confusion and milling around which is exactly how previous reviewers described the pickup point downtown. HOWEVER, I must say that is not how I found it at all. The lines were organized according to destination and time. I got right in the 10:15AM line for Philly with no problem. Other passengers as well as the bus staff were courteous and everything from ticket check and loading in DC to arrival in Philly went very smoothly. The bus was clean and somewhat empty - I had my own seat until the pickup point outside Baltimore and the wifi was reliable up until that point as well. The driver was professional and drove safely - we arrived about 10 minutes after our scheduled time and only 45 minutes longer (and $35 cheaper) than by Amtrak. I will def be taking Megabus to Philly again. I will say that the line for NYC looked very crowded so I will probably avoid a trip there but for a quick trip to Philly, why not? read more

Pros: - Organized service - Timely - Fun Design - The Megabuses are brand new buses, featuring an UK-style double decker bus design. If you sit on the top, the sky light is kind of cool! The Megabus yellow bus-man representative logo kind of creeps me out though :) - Wi-Fi & Outlets Cons: - 1 stop in White Marsh (near Baltimore) - Dizziness - This is more of a personal feeling. I get a little car sick, so I'm usually good if I sit in the front of the bus. However, I think due to the fact that this bus is a double decker, it makes the ride extra shaky! The first time I took the bus I sat up top. The second time I figured I'd try the bottom. Both times were a little wobbly in different ways! We didn't pay for arrive two hours laters than we were supposed to. We didn't pay for the driver to almost drop us off at the wrong location. Don't do it. Shell the extra moola to take a more reliable bus. While I'm going to argue everyone here and say that Megabus was quite acceptable on time on my trip, everything else was exactly as they called it--unreliable wiFi if any (Reddit is blocked, FYI), nonworking plugs/lights, inconsistent temperatures, rude drivers, confusing lines. The pickup point is only a short distance from Metro Center, and you'll be able to recognize the area because there is a huge lot, and a green pathway leading up to the lines. However, the signs don't tell you which bus lines are which, so you'll have to do some inquiring to the people who arrive earlier--there is no staff there to help you other than the person who is standing near the bus to shout out "DESTINATION, TIME!" I was frustrated because the customer service lady had confirmed with me that they had plugs and lights on the bus (I didn't want to sleep on the bus... i wanted to surf the web or read so it wouldn't mess with my sleep schedule). I should have known from the fine print...wiFi is not guaranteed, nor is power. We booked a 7:30 DC to NYC bus for New Year's, and I was going into it thinking we were going to miss our Broadway show from a 2 hour delay or some other sort of mishap. I had 4 tickets for a trip DC - NYC. Two hours before the trip, I receive a vague email saying there's been a change of plans and we've been placed on another bus. We did not get reserved seats with extra leg room as planned and paid for. I requested a refund and was abruptly denied. I am traveling with my elderly parents and it's extremely uncomfortable for them and it's not at all what I paid for. I paid extra for better seats and was only given a 2-hour notice so I couldn't not even find an alternative. Mega bus took no responsibility for the last-min change. I have been using Mega bus for years but this is my last trip with them. If the company can't take responsibility, they will not get any more $$$ from me. Ridiculous. Quick, on time, clean and reasonably priced. The bus wasn't overfilled and I actually had two seats to myself but I guess this depends on which route you take. Would use again and recommend. Megabus is the absolute worst service in existence. Do not ever use them. They delayed my bus for several hours and without giving any specifics, required us to "stay within the vicinity." It was 40 degrees out at 3 in the morning, so everyone left to find shelter to come back when they estimated the bus to arrive. After 4 separate emails about 90 or 120 minute delays, the bus arrived an hour earlier than their last stated time, so several of us missed the bus. Customer service blamed us for missing the bus and tried to tell us we had to buy a new ticket. I felt bad bc I was getting angry at the customer reps who really weren't at fault, but HQ should have better procedures for when THEY screw up instead of putting on the customer. Eff that. I bought an amtrak ticket. NEVER AGAIN megabus. They are the absolute worst. read more

WHY I USED THEM - Advertise "$1 Fares" - Free Wifi & Power Outlets THINGS I LEARNED THE HARD WAY - "Free Wifi" only available ON WEEKDAYS. (Huh?!?) - Power Outlets rarely work - Fares are RARELY $1 ANYWHERE - NYC/DC route averages $15 - $30 EACH WAY! - Really poor communication among staff people - Buses delayed on average 30 mins - 1 hour the past two times I've taken Megabus. - DC busstop was MOVED to a parking lot 20 mins walk from Union Station. YUCK. - NYC busstop was MOVED to the west side of 9th Ave. SUPER YUCK. THINGS I LIKED - One bus had a skylight ceiling on the second deck! Really pretty. - Bus drivers were nice. read more

Even though it was a burning hot humid oven on the 2nd floor Union Station Megabus, passengers waited in their seats 30 min early assuming they desired to save and protect their personal items. Some of us were so amazingly, blazingly sweaty that we chatted outside. At departure the driver arrived received a call from what I assume was a supervisor inquiring about the dire situation as well as the brawl upstairs over two people not getting a reserved seat. At the bus roaring to life, you could hear the audible relief of knowing that the A/C would be washing over us momentarily. It never happened. Sitting behind the driver (this was the smallet but best seat), I noticed he kept his own window open. About a 1/2 hour in, a polite young upstairs lady said the air from the vents was barely blowing or possibly not on. The driver was cooperative and gave her directions on how to pop up the two moon roofs. MMMM, warm freeway breeze, yummy. Upon arriving to Richmond, VA, I was praying that an elderly person was not seriously passed out upstairs. I decided to forgo my return ticket and take a $37 train which was similar in schedule and duration. I´m writing from there now and need to go get a sweater because it so wonderfully cold. If Megabus gets responds to me I´m planning on giving them a better rating. You deserve better, dont buy coffee this month and take the train. read more

Do yourself a favor and avoid megabus. On my trip, there was a one hour delay each way because the bus broke down TWICE. So obviously these buses are not well maintained and basically on the verge of breakdown. I will definitely pay more money for a more reliable service or just drive from dc to nyc next time. read more

The ABSOLUTE worst commuting experience of my entire life!!!!!!!!! I would never recommend this bus company to my worst enemy. They are impolite, rude, unprofessional, dismissive and completely unruly. The bus departed 30 min late from NYC to DC on the 5 o'clock 4/9/2018 bus. The employees on-site were not concerned or informative towards the customers. Everyone in line for the bus complained and felt unsafe & uncomfortable. We did not feel secure in our transportation!!! I would highly recommend to use OurBus, clean and comfortable and professional service and arrived in perfect timing. We took OurBus to NYC! read more
