Do not use this as a reliable source for transportation. This company is highly unreliable and highly unproffesional. My last trip was over 2 hrs late due to improper planning on the companies part. The driver got lost and had to ask for directions several times to the point where one passenger came forward and aided him to the bus stop. We stood idle for over an hr because there was some mix up with the drivers needed. When I called the company to ask for a refund they denied me one due to the policy that states all reservations are non refundable, although the company was completely at fault. Your best bet is boltbus, they are far more reliable and professional in regards to cheap and easy transportation (they also have better seating). read more

2.5 maybe. I personally haven't had a bad experience with Mega, but my brother has had a flat with them before. He called to complain and got his money back because he was coming down from NY for an event of mine and ended up missing it because they waited 2 hours to get it fixed/for a new bus to come. But if you read around Yelp, it seems like people like to complain about the buses when they happen to break down. I've used Mega about 8 or so times round trip to NY and Boston, it's been okay, but inconsistent. Sometimes it's on time, sometimes it's late (or leaves late), especially from NY. They usually overbook, so they have contractors that take you to where you need to go (ie: not on the normal, double-decker Megabuses you see). Sometimes there is wifi, sometimes there isn't. Some of the outlets don't work, etc. What I like about it, it's generally cheap, though the cheaper tickets are for off-peak hours (not at later times on Fri. and Sun.), which makes it on par with Bolt and more expensive than Washington Deluxe. Sometimes they contract out to crappier buses, sometimes better (one time I had three movies that had JUST hit theaters playing on small TV screens on the bus, I enjoyed it). So I guess it's your luck. Extra information to help you with your busy decision-making: *Megabus usually has an extra stop or two on the way from DC to NY. The ones I've taken usually stop at White Marsh, MD or Philadelphia (or both). I'm not sure how to distinguish that stop to Philly when selecting the bus... *Compared to Washington Deluxe and even Bolt, Megabus has the widest range of times it runs. *Despite sometimes being contracted out, the yellow-jacket wearers usually will tell you which bus to get on, so it won't be confusing. read more

You get what you pay for. I paid 20 dollars round trip. For that money I got: -To and from New York. -A reservation that didn't include the pickup cross streets around Penn Station. Hmmm....luckly one person in our 4 person party reservation did. -No air conditioning on the ride home---in 85 degree heat. -A driver who was sympathetic to this problem and let us vote to continue on, or sit at the side of the NJ turnpike for 1 hour till a new bus came (we voted to continue on) -A convertible bus (as the driver opened the emergency hatch to let more air in). -Sweat, lots of sweat. -A convenient pick up spot in DC. read more

Having taken Megabus on 9 separate occasions over the last 2 months, I feel compelled to at least present my perspective and balance out some of the rather negative reviews on here (not that some of them aren't warranted). I've made 2 roundtrips from DC to NYC, 2 roundtrips from DC to Philly, as well as another one-way trip from DC to NYC. For DC to NYC, I paid $28.50 and $40.50 roundtrip for each of my two trips, then $16.50 and $24.50 for each of my two Philly roundtrips. I've never managed to keep an accurate count, but I believe there are at least 3 toll booths that charge somewhere in the ballpark of $3 between DC and NYC before you hit the Lincoln Tunnel, which is a $13.00 toll for cars. Therefore, if I were to drive a car from DC to New York, it would cost me roughly $22 each way just in tolls, not to mention at least $20-25 in gas. The fact that you can get to New York from DC for less than half the cost of driving your own car in roughly the same amount of time is an incredible deal if you ask me. As for the service/amenities aboard Megabus, it's been a bit of a mixed bag but that's what makes it a bit interesting. Here are some of my observations: -Free wifi only works about 25% of the time, and it's usually pretty slow. Solution: bring a hotspot or enable your iPhone hotspot. -Outlets work about 75% of the time. Solution: charge up your electronics before you get on the bus. -I've never been on a bus that left more than 25 minutes after the scheduled departure time. Solution: Come prepared to wait alittle while. -I've only once arrived more than 45 minutes after my scheduled arrival time (which turned out to be a good thing, since it was an overnight bus and it meant less waiting time at Union Station until the metro opened). Every other time we've usually arrived within 20-30 minutes of scheduled arrival time. Solution: Plan on being around 30 minutes late. -The bathrooms are usually acceptable, though once the blue stuff leaked out onto the floor and into the aisle. Solution: Sit upstairs, it's a double decker bus! Every time the wifi doesn't work or the outlets don't work, I remind myself of how little I paid for my ticket and I am still content with my choice to ride Megabus. My car doesn't have outlets or free wifi either, so I would have been no better off had I driven my own car. Sure I could have taken Amtrak, but the cheapest roundtrips I've ever seen on Amtrak for DC-PHL and DC-NYC were $70 and $100, respectively. Only once have I ever experienced a somewhat rude/abrasive driver, which I actually found to be a bit comical because I put my backpack on my seat when I first boarded the bus so he wouldn't end up sitting next to me (I saw him standing around outside), and then it turned out he was the driver. Probably the biggest complaint I'd have, ironically, is about some of the other customers. It's always very funny to me that people throw a temper tantrum in front of the driver when the wifi doesn't work, the reading lights don't work, the outlets don't work, etc. Come on people, you paid how much for your ticket? 10 bucks? 20 at most? The way some people react it's as if they paid for a first class ticket and ended up in coach. As long as you know the risks that come along with taking a low-cost bus service, you'll be fine. If you're expecting something where everything works and you get to and from your destination, then take Amtrak and pay $50-60 more for your ticket at a minimum. I'd rather save my money on transportation then have some extra cash to splurge on stuff at my destination! read more

RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE DRIVER COULDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH When I departed the baggage helpers were treating customers as if they just entered a maximum security prison. Yelling at women, using profanities, and having a "thug" attitude. I didn't like the way the baggage helpers were ordering people around in a very intimidating way. This is customer service at it's worst. I also want to add our driver had horrible English. MEGABUS: Learn customer service and teach it to your employees or I will go use another Bus line. For a few dollars more I would prefer to be treated like a human being not a cattle in a herd. read more

I've used Megabus exactly once, so take this review with however many grains of salt you want. I did DC - NYC on a weekday morning at 7am. Pros: The bus left on time (exactly on time, I was looking at my phone). It was clean. Both power outlets worked. The Megabus pickup is not hard to find in Union Station. The bus arrived at the drop-off in NYC one minute before the scheduled arrival time. Cons: The seat could have been comfier. Someone (not me, promise) got stuck for a minute when the bathroom door didn't open. Something on the bus (maybe a GPS?) gave an audible notification relatively frequently. I'm not saying Megabus would be my automatic go-to in the future (I'd compare price and availability with Vamoose, Tripper, Bolt). But if MB was the only option would I take it again? Yes. For half the cost or less of an Amtrak ticket? Yes. read more

I am completely conflicted about my first Megabus experience. I traveled from White Marsh to NYC earlier this month, with reserved seats both directions. When "our" departure bus arrived at the White Marsh MTA pick-up point, the driver announced it was being taken out of service due to mechanical difficulties. Another (regularly-scheduled) bus came within half an hour and picked up passengers scheduled to be on that bus and a few of the passengers on the disabled bus ~ but there was not room for any of us who were booked to be on the earlier out-of-service bus. After a total delay of about an hour (standing outside, no place except the ground to sit) we were boarded on another bus. The drivers, both ways, were excellent. I loved that both buses were only half-filled, so it was easy to spread out. But "communication" was terrible, and I do not think the emergency situation was triaged well at all. So my overall rating really reflects the dramatic difference between corporate customer service (abysmal) and onsite (e.g., drivers) customer service (excellent). I'll have to reeeeeeeeeeally think about ever taking another Megabus.... read more

3-stars for one horrible service and one excellent service. Trip from DC to NY: 1-star. The driver spent the first 5 minutes reciting all the rules of her bus. At first, I was amused that she would run such a tight ship but I could understand that she wanted as much orderly conduct as possible. The problem was the AC. She told us that she cannot change the temperature while she is driving so we need to settle on one NOW or wait until our pitstop in Baltimore. OK - so the passengers settled on 71 degrees. But this was basically like riding in a freezer. Then at Baltimore, we asked her to increase it, but she strongly disagreed and said that that would move into the heater territory. So I spent the entire 5-hour ride frozen and shaking from head to toe!! Lucky my boyfriend was with me and gave me his sweater, otherwise I would have gotten sick for sure. But one redeeming aspect of that trip was that the bus only ran 30 minutes behind schedule, which seemed reasonable considering that it was Friday evening and there was much traffic going into Manhattan. Trip from NY to DC: 5-stars. This time, the driver did not say anything when we departed. Further, our side of the bus didn't get the AC air so my trip was quite pleasant. Plus, the bus had a sunroof that provided warm sunlight throughout the ride. Moreover, the passengers who were directly under the AC were cold and asked the driver if she could turn the temperature up. Guess what happened? She did so promptly AND while driving! So I don't know whether the first bus I took was just not capable of that option and was super old?? What I was amazed at, however, was that we returned to Union Station exactly on time! I was very impressed by the efficiency. Anyway, it's public transportation and it's cheap. So come with a blanket or thick clothes and be prepared to gamble on whether you get a pleasant or terrible ride! read more

Weaknesses: 1. I agree with the other posts that the WIFI on the bus sucks. It's spotty, and weak. During most of the trip, I was unable to access the internet with my laptop. 2. It's a little bit sad that I used my laptop as a lap warmer because it is freezing in that bus! Okay, well I AM from Hawaii and am spoiled with warm tropical weather, but in my defense - I really can't feel my numb fingers, and the guy who lives in D.C. said he was freezing as well! If you dare to ride the MegaBus, I suggest bringing a blanket and/or dressing warmly. The air conditioning is nonadjustable, and I did not feel comfortable with asking the bus driver to turn it down (she was edgy/irritable). 3. To add to that, we got stuck in traffic and something went wrong with the bus. We were stuck outside of Baltimore, and waited for an hour for another bus to rescue us. The bus left at 2:45 PM, and we finally arrived in New York just before 10 PM. The estimated travel time was 4.5 hours... but nope, it was a whopping 7.25 hours. Pro(non-plural): $30 - cheap! Luckily, I was just on the East coast for just for vacation, and was not on a tight schedule. It's no wonder that the rates are so cheap. You can take it and get to your destination, but I hear that Megabus frequently runs late. It's really cheap, about $30 to travel from Washington, D.C. to New York, but I think I'll pay the extra money for the Acela train next time. read more

**Please do not torture yourself* This was the bus ride from Hell. There should be a zero star option on Yelp. This was my first experience taking a bus and will definitely be my last with Megabus for sure. My trip from DC to NYC was suppose to be short and sweet. There was no A/C in the month of July really?? Not only was our ride hot and sweaty, but our bus broke down after dropping off passengers in Baltimore at 10 o clock at night!! No announcements were made as to why we were stopped for such a long period. It wasn't until we saw other passengers running off the bus and realized there was something wrong. Some passengers were lucky enough to get an available seat on another bus that was also doing a drop off and headed to DC. (we found out this is why they were running) The unlucky ones, like myself and couple of friends were left to find our own way home. We negotiated with a Taxi driver on a flat rate fare and included other passengers that was interested in chipping in. We were scheduled to arrive in DC at 9:30, but I did not make it until close to midnight. I called customer service and was told there was no incident reported and they do not issue refunds over the phone. Really MegaBus?? I had a horrible experience between Washington D.C. and Toronto. A journey that was supposed to last 12 hours took 15 hours both ways (I overheard the bus driver and he said that this route was always delayed). On my route from D.C. to Toronto the wifi did not work, the A/C was not working upstairs (it was as double decker bus) so I was boiling the whole trip. There is also only one 30 minute scheduled bus stop at a rest area in upstate NY (near the end of the trip) so if you want to wait to use the bathroom in order to avoid using the one on board the bus you'll have to hold it for a loooong time. On the way back from Toronto to D.C., there was a one hour delay in Buffalo when they had to switch bus drivers and the new bus drivers were late for some reason. Also, this time the A/C on the bus was working great but it became too cold and the bus drivers said the climate control was broken so they couldn't make it warmer. Alas I was shivering the whole ride to D.C. and people ended up buying blankets from the gas station at our rest stop in upstate NY. The wifi did work on the trip back thankfully but I noticed I didn't really need it since the trip is mostly overnight so I was sleeping. This was my first megabus experience and I was sadly disappointed. If the climate control issues and wifi connectivity were solved I would feel a lot better about getting a bus ride for only 48 buck from D.C. to Toronto, but as it was I felt I would have been better off driving myself (which would have only taken me 9-10 hours versus 15 on Megaubs) and paying double that price in gas. read more

I would give this company ZERO stars if I could. I have never had such a horrible experience. First, they charged us $5 to change our reservation even though the bus was nearly empty. The website says it should be only $1. We were jipped $13!!! Second, when we wanted to confirm if we were heading to the right destination, one staff member made a very condescending comment, "Shouldn't you have checked before you got on the bus?" HORRIBLE customer service. Third, their pick up location in NY is like the middle of no where. Freaking far from any metro station and is dark and scary to walk to. A major inconvenience. Fourth, the bus was very shaky and bumpy. The emergency exit had some problems on the way back and the driver had to stop and check on it. Wasted at least 20 minutes of our time. I will NEVER EVER take Megabus again. Vamoose is much better; clean, organized, convenient, and cheaper. read more

So, I guess I don't have any comparison as I've never taken one of the DC to NYC, but I had a great experience with Megabus. I hopped on the bus at Galleryplace near the MLK Library at about 7:15am on New Year's Day (yes, I agree it was early and no, I hadn't been to bed yet!) I just sat back and relaxed, falling asleep even before we hit Maryland. The bus driver was funny cracking jokes for the first few minutes of the trip and then again when we stopped in Baltimore. The seats are comfortable and the buses are new and clean. Overall it was a great experience and I highly recommend it. The $40 round trip can't be beat and they leave DC and NYC six times a day each. Also, you can log in and change your trip up to 24 hours before departure. BC - The only reason I gave Megabus 4 stars and not 5 was the bathroom situation. On the trip to NYC, the bathroom was not properly stocked with the necessary chemicals, still functional if not sanitary(info from the driver, not personal investigation) and on the trip back to DC the bathroom didn't even function! read more

Great as long as you TAKE THE DOUBLE DECKER BLUE BUSES. The single decker white "COACH USA" bus SUCKED. Sorry but it had a wobbly wheel and felt like we were in a washing machine for 4.5hrs to NYC from DC. No wifi, no powerplugs. I would have taken a china town bus over this. Maybe because it was an off time bus (8.15am and not on the hour or half hour). The Blue double decker on the way back was like an airplane...EXCEPT - none of the powerplugs worked. I've been using the service for about three years now, going from DC to NYC, I think it's great! I'm always on time so be sure you are there at least 20 minutes before departure, and they've been most of time very professional, even one time when I was going to NYC and the bus driver wasn't feeling to well, in less than an hour two buses arrived and they solve the problem quickly (It was Labor Day Weekend) overall cheap prices and more than fair service. Is it (sort of) cheap? Yes, though the prices may go up when you hit "book." Are you going to get there on time? Nope. Will the drivers tell you what's going on if you're leaving late, or if you left on time but will arrive over an hour late? No, they will never communicate useful information to you. Ever. Will there be random, unscheduled 30 min stops? Sometimes, yeah. Is the service going to be horrendous? Yes, definitely. A few recent megabus experiences: -The bus broke down before leaving the station. We had to wait over an hour, and the driver did not communicate with us, not even once, to let us know what was going on. When we finally got underway, she literally had to ask passengers for directions to New York. -A bus arrived very late due to inclement weather, and everyone was left standing in the snow/freezing rain waiting for over an hour. This is not megabus's fault... but when they told us the bus was around the corner but we couldn't board for another half hour because the driver needed to take his break? That was hard to take. I was all for him taking his break before driving back to DC, but why couldn't we get on the bus first?? -I'm on a bus now. It's going to get in over an hour late even though we left on time. Talk about inconvenient. Doesn't help that the driver made an unscheduled 30 min stop. Bottom line: It's still the cheapest way to travel between DC and NY, and I'l probably use them again, but it's definitely not reliable, and there will never be any apologies for things going wrong. DO NOT TRAVEL WITH MEGABUS! A ticket does not guarantee you a ride, as buses do not always arrive on time (if at all). You may think you're saving money, but I learned the hard way that it is NOT WORTH THE SAVINGS. Megabus may be more affordable, but it is UNBELIEVABLY UNRELIABLE. If you really need to reach your destination, find another way, even if it costs slightly more. The headache and surges in blood pressure along with the horrible customer service make it unbearable. Please do not make the same mistake I did. I purchased a Megabus ticket from Christiansburg, VA to New York City at 3:35pm on January 9, 2018. After an hour's worth of Megabus Customer Service phone calls (a series of holds, relay of transfers, and "please call back in ten minutes"), I finally learned from a supervisor that the bus had allegedly left. I continued to wait since I knew that couldn't be true because I was on time for the bus. When a bus arrived, the driver told me it was going to Atlanta, not NYC. I told her that the NYC bus never arrived. Much to my surprise, she assured me that it did arrive because she was the driver. She said the bus departed at 3:25. I told her that the bus was scheduled to depart at 3:35, and showed her my ticket for verification. She responded that the ticket time "must be wrong" because she was scheduled to leave at 3:25. I called Megabus to reschedule another departing bus, but the supervisor informed me that there was no way she would be able to exchange/ replace the ticket, and that I would have to repurchase the ticket. Obviously, this is ludicrous to me because it is not my fault that there was an apparent discrepancy between the time on my ticket and the time in the driver's schedule. read more

I don't know what to do about Megabus. It's kind of like a dysfunctional relationship that i'm still in because it's so damn useful. The good: More trips than most other bus companies, less sketchy than Greyhound, pretty cheap even the day before, DOUBLE DECKER! The bad: LATE about 1/2 the time, bizarre stops in the middle of no where to switch drivers, WI-FI that doesn't always work, electricity that doesn't always work, surly employees. The ugly: Non existent customer service, and if you do manage to get someone on the phone, they have no idea what they are talking about. Buses show up late, so a 7:30 bus will show up at 8:30, and even if you have an 8:30 ticket, you'll have to pay 5 dollars to "change" your ticket and get on that bus, which makes no sense... I have taken about 10 round-trip with them, and have never had a major issue, aside from real lateness. So i'll keep taking em, as long as they don't raise their prices. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. HORRIBLE COMPANY. I spent 2 hours on the phone explaining my situation about needing to change my trip to a date in February due to medical reasons and how they don't have dates set up in February yet, only until January. I asked what can be done about this? Can I get a credit? They just kept repeating in a NASTY TONE that there's no refunds, which I didn't even ask for. I asked for a credit or at least one out of the two rescheduling fees waived (because they eventually told me the ONLY THING I could do is reschedule right now before my bus departs for the latest day offered in January and THEN reschedule AGAIN once the february bus schedules come out and pay those two rescheduling fees of $5-$10....RIDICULOUS) They kept NASTILY repeating that "NOTHING CAN BE DONE" and that they "UNDERSTAND THAT I FEEL THIS MAY CAUSE INCONVENIENCES" (can't even apologize for your shitty services megabus?????) So I kept trying to kindly repeat that I don't need them to repeat the policy to me over and over and that I just want to speak to the manager because I don't believe that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING can be done.....and they HUNG UP ON ME. HUNG UP ON ME!!!!!!!! I'm sorry for all of the caps I just cannot believe the horrible treatment they give to a PAYING CUSTOMER!!! I've just never experience THAT KIND of DISRESPECT before! This is the second time I've had an issue with megabus....the first time our bus driver ABANDONED us in NJ. She just got out of the bus and stopped driving in the middle of the highway. I complained for 2 months and FINALLY, only got a 50% credit (not a refund) back for my trip....to then use for other megabus services.... This is a company I will NEVER use again, no matter what. I would give this company zero stars if that was an option. Because I have an uncanny ability to see the silver lining, good things include: clean facilities, kind bus driver, great bus companions. What made this such a bad experience was a two hour stop in Carneys Point, NJ (quaint truck stop) because our bus driver had hit her maximum hours for driving in a week and could not continue to drive the bus. Upon leaving DC, the MegaBus company said that they would have a driver waiting in NJ, but they didn't. 2.5 hours later we were on our way to NY at the expense of many patrons missing the beginning of the Yankee playoff game. Refunds should be coming, but the customer service line isn't very prompt. After all, we're on bus (not a boat). If your time isn't valuable, there's nothing wrong with this company, but if you need a reliable mode of transportation, look elsewhere. read more

However you do have to deal with annoying riders such as these who need to profess their love for one another on transport in the midst of strangers: "You are one of the most amazing people I have ever met. I am an avid Bolt Bus rider, but this time, the times I wanted to travel to NYC were booked, so I went with Megabus since they pick up at the same place. It was awful. 1. I am used to the roomy, leather seats on Bolt Bus, so I was not happy to be cramped in these tiny seats. Also, I sat downstairs and it was incredibly hot. People who came from upstairs to use the bathroom said, "Whoa, it's so hot down here!" That doesn't make sense... 2. Bolt Bus usually stops for a break so people can get food, stretch their legs, use a different bathroom, etc. Yes, it's only 4 hours, so not everyone needs a break, but what about those who do? Especially when our long legs have been cramped up for 3 or more hours. (I'm a tall girl.) 3. They stopped about 15 miles outside of NYC to "switch drivers." What? It was such a tease. I was starving and I noticed we were pulling into a rest stop, and I thought, "Thank you, God!" But the driver told us to keep our seats; they were just switching drivers. What? 4. They stopped in White Marsh, Maryland, but the web site doesn't even mention intermediate stops. A few things I liked... 1. Purell dispenser in the bathroom 2. The fact that it's much cooler upstairs than downstairs. (I sat upstairs on the way back to D.C. because of my awful experience on the way to NY.) 3. They showed two movies. Nice way to pass time when you're sweating and starving. If possible, I'm sticking with Bolt Bus. read more

Worst experience of traveling from NYC to DC. Station attendant could not answer if we had boarded an express bus or not, was told, "look on the side of the bus, thats where you're going tonight". Call center reps are useless to help. ZERO ticket accountability, literally anyone can ride, no one ever checked my reservation. I'd consider any other means of transportation other than megabus. I would give Megabus 5 stars except that I hate the fact that they have to stop in White Marsh. I was so happy because we didn't stop at a rest stop (like one of my Bolt Bus rides did), but instead we have to stop at White Marsh to pick up / drop off passengers, which means wasted time without even the benefit of stretching your legs or using a non-moving bathroom or grabbing a snack. But other than that, my experience was great. Left on time (more or less, and made up the time on the road), loaded early in DC so we didn't have to stand out in the cold (not in NYC, but that's because they have a number of buses loading one after another), doubledecker so lots of room and more possibility of getting your own seat (wait... maybe I shouldn't be writing this recommendation! less seats for me... ), nice cozy seats.... Two issues I see if you have to share a seat (on the way back I had the only empty seat on the bus next to me, so I imagine sharing is a good possibility): 1. There's no overhead space because of the doubledecker, so anything you carry on has to go at your feet - which makes for not much leg room. 2. There's only one plug per row, and it's on the outer wall, so a. only one person can use the plug at a time, and b. the window person may get annoyed with the cord if the aisle person wants to plug something in. Oh, and one other issue - wt*(&(*^ is up with the drivers?? I have never experienced such rude and unprofessional behavior. The driver KICKED my seat and yelled at me to sit up 'cause someone else might need to sit up at the White Marsh stop - AFTER he had already loaded all the new passengers and they were all comfortably seated. This would've been unacceptable behavior even before loading the passengers (for whom I would have of course moved if someone needed the seat), but after?!?! Other than Mr ridiculous driver I had 2 great rides, but I just lowered it another star because of him, and the first because of the stop in White Marsh. read more

Cheap, convenient, computer friendly, and free internet!!!!!!!!! This is the bus not a train or a plane so traffic is always possible, so bring your computer or magazines. Each seat has an outlet so you can plug in your computer or phone etc... and the internet on the bus works well enough to watch a show on hulu without delay. Two stars is the average of my weekend adventure, between incompetence, poor organization, and the new location in DC, I do NOT plan on using Megabus again and do NOT recommend it for others... DC to NYC - 1 star because we arrived at our final destination alive, but there was no toilet paper and the bus driver kept saying he was "driving slow because of all the traffic" .... if by traffic he just meant other cars on the road then sure, but even the grandma in the 88 oldsmobile passed us on the right side of the road. After an hour or so of this other customers complained which the driver got on the PA and announced "Megabus does not allow me to drive faster than the speed limit, they check in and if I speed, I will get fired!" Not an hour later the the 830 and 9am buses passed us.... NYC to DC - I'd say 2-3 stars if only for a goofy personality of the bus driver. He also threw in a movie for all of us. However we were still late to leave and late to arrive. read more

I have a mixed review of Megabus. I just returned from a roundtrip visit between Washington DC and New York City for the Thanksgiving holiday 2012. I departed for NYC on Wednesday afternoon and returned to DC on Saturday afternoon. The trip up to NY was not as good as the return to DC. The outbound bus (Coach USA) was very old and uncomfortable. There were no outlets as in the newer buses, and the Wi-Fi provided only allows for emailing and browsing. Forget streaming! The drivers were good, but I found the staff people rather rude and unprofessional. I had a much better experience with Washington Deluxe and will likely return to them. The costs were comparable, but Washington Deluxe offers a direct ride and a much more convenient drop-off and pick-up location in midtown. Megabus has a stop in Baltimore and the pick-up location is not as convenient. I should also add that the loading process for Megabus in both Washington and NYC was disorganized and frustrating on both ends of the trip. Signage was lacking. There were no clear indications for people at different departure times and the staff were unhelpful and impatient with passengers. By contrast, Washington Deluxe were patients and courteous and provided much better customer service. Just some thoughts for those considering a NY trip and want to compare these two companies. read more

It's cheap. It is what it is. And maybe I'm just a strange, short shape ... but these were the most uncomfortable seats in the world. Wow. Buses are consistently late, so generally expect to get to your final destination at least 30 minutes late, if not an hour or two ... and maps are useful, because there's no forewarning of the bus' arrival time. That said, you can get some cheap deals if you plan far enough ahead ... $1 trips and all that. Still, those seats kill my back! read more

Megabusssss!!! *Shakes fist* Megabus is remarkably disorganized in every possible way. Upon arriving at the bus depot, I found waiting passengers in several unmarked lines with no Megabus workers in sight to ask for clarification. I, and most passengers around me, resorted to trusting the guesses of fellow waiting passengers. This was made more confusing since buses earlier than mine were running late. ("wait is this for the 6:30 bus? but it's already 7...") I should have taken this as a clue for my own wait time. Here's the breakdown: DC to NYC: left 20 minutes late, arrived an hour late NYC to DC: left 45 minutes late, arrived 2 hours late. (We were supposed to arrive at 11, but instead rolled into Union Station at 1am--- just in time to miss the metro. Thanks Megabus. Thanks.) What was extra frustrating was the lack of communication from the staff and generally poor customer service. Despite running constantly late, the staff never offered an apology or explanation. If the bus is going to arrive 2 hours late, it really isn't too much to expect the driver to inform us so that we can make arrangements as necessary. Also, when we were finally loaded onto the bus, passengers were rudely herded like cattle to drop off our luggage and board the bus. Apparently, there is never any time to answer questions from confused or frustrated customers, even with a 20-45 minute delay. True, I spent a few bucks less than I would have on Boltbus (my usual go-to) to take myself from DC to NYC and back, but the extra 3 hours wasted and completely inadequate service wasn't quite worth the $5 saved. read more

This bus was pretty crappy. 6 hour trip from NYC on a Sunday night...bus boarded 20 mins late, stopped at the rest stop, went on a diversion off 95, stopped at the weigh station (what!) and then...the worst part, dropped us off in NAVY YARD instead of the regularly scheduled h Street/Metro Center drop-off point at 1:30 in the morning when there were NO cabs in sight. Even this wouldn't have been so horrible, but they didn't let us know that they were changing the drop off spot until we were 30 minutes from DC and it was already 1:30 AM and super late to call rides, cabs etc. I guess taking the bus from DC to NYC and back is never "fun" but this pretty much sucked. Have had much better luck with Vamoose...and even Greyhound. read more

My email to Megabus: This past Saturday, 12/11/21, I scheduled a day trip to New York City from Baltimore for my mom, sister, and me. Out of the multiple options I had to choose from on what bus company to use, I chose Megabus. Our first trip from Baltimore to New York schedule was scheduled for 6:35 AM and it ended up being an hour late. Not only was this a great inconvenience because it cuts our day in New York shorter, but as a result, we had to miss The Rockettes which we paid for and are not refundable. If we the bus were to have been on time, we would have made it to the show with plenty of time. Each ticket was $100. So for the 3 of us, we are now out of $300 which is a lot of money, especially around the holiday season. I am quite upset regarding the situation. And then that leads me into the ride home. We got to the station in New York 30 minutes early for our 8:00 PM bus trip back. To our relief, we saw the bus at the station waiting there for us. Once we started, we were even delighted to find out we'd be getting home early, around 10:50 PM. That's where my satisfaction for the trip back ends. We were informed by the first bus driver that they will be stitching out with another bus driver shortly into the trip. This was no problem but it became a problem when the second bus driver was about 50 minutes late! At this point in the day we are more than ready to be home but our trip got delayed. Our original ETA was 11:20 PM and our actual time of arrival was 11:55 PM. We were lucky enough that our driver, my husband, was understanding about the switch up so late in the night. I plan to leave an honest Yelp review about my dissatisfaction if nothing can be resolved of this. Their response email: Hello Maria, We're very sorry that our bus was delayed. My friend and I tried to go from Durham to Washington D.C. via a Megabus. First the bus was delayed 2 hours. We were notified via email, which is perfectly acceptable. When the revised time rolled around, the bus was not there. About a dozen passengers waited in 95F heat in the sun for more than an hour. Calls to customer service resulted in "We don't know where the bus is" and "No we can't refund your tickets over the phone." This was only after staying on hold for 15-20 min at a time. After waiting for two hours, my friend and I called a friend and got a ride to my car and we ended up driving to D.C. Megabus, you should be called Negabus. Negative review. I would give 0 stars if Yelp let me. read more

Most of the reviews posted on Yelp for Megabus are NEGATIVE because folks tend to want to "vent" more than go out of their way to "praise" so I always take that into consideration. I use Megabus a lot from Philly to NYC because I like the convenience of getting on the bus in downtown Philly near the Liberty Bell. It's closer for me than 30th St and has a bus shelter in case of rain. This week I made my first trip from Philly to Washington, DC. Bought ticket early so it was $6.00 down and $10 back. Good price. The buses to DC only pick up at 30th St so I had to take a cab to get there but still cheap. Bus (7:50 am) left exactly on time and was 80% full. I'm used to the double-decker megabus - which I like for leg room - but both buses on my round trip will single level ones. Ride was smooth with a 15 minute stop at the "Baltimore" stop. NOTE: This is a shopping center about 15 north of the Harbor Tunnel and NOT convenient if you want to actually VISIT Baltimore. We arrived in DC ON TIME. As others may have noted, they moved the stop in DC about 5 months ago. I needed to be near the Convention Center and thought it was there when I booked. It is NOT. It is in a large parking lot about 9 blocks from the CC and 5 blocks from Union Station. They have small covered area which holds maybe 5 people. And NO Bathrooms within 4-5 blocks. Be prepared. So this is really the MAIN reason I might not use MB for DC next time. Coming home I was on the 5:15pm bus. I arrived at 4:30 and one person in line./ By 5:00 the bus was there waiting and we left EXACTLY at 5:15 with - maybe 15 people on the bus. This was a Monday in July. We arrived within 5 minutes of scheduled arrival. So, MB still is my method to NYC but will look at other options - Greyhound Advance would have been $12.00 more RT. - for DC read more

I recently rode back from NY to DC on Megabus. This updated review was averaged between me and my boyfriend. Pros - For 2 people, the price was $22.50. Awesome price if you like to plan ahead and buy your tickets in advance. - We arrived one hour early and was able to take the 3:30pm bus. They usually charge a fee to change your time but the guy told us not to worry about it. So I guess sometimes they enforce the rules and sometimes they don't. Cons - Leg room was uncomfortable for my 6'2" boyfriend - Seems to be a bumpier ride - Hot bus - The guy behind us was the loudest mouth breather ever. I seriously thought he was snoring for 4 hours. Nope. Wide awake. Also, fellow passengers? I think some of you need to invest in a good set of noise-cancelling earbuds or headphones. Some good brands are Sennheiser, AudioTechnica, Etymotic, and Klipsch. And I suppose if you're a sucker for marketing, Beats by Dr. Dre (seriously, go with the other brands). Beyonce will sound a lot better, and you won't kill your hearing by blasting her songs through those crappy Skullcandy earbuds. Trust. read more

My ticket from Washington, DC to Richmond, VA was only $3.50 (one way), which is pretty damn awesome. I can understand that a budget bus line would skimp on most things to maintain a profit, but I still would like some shelter from the cold and wind at 6am on a 28 degree day. The one bizarre element of the experience? When I plugged my smartphone into the outlet, the thing went crazy. I thought it was starting to die - until I unplugged it and it began working fine again. Take from it what you will. All in all: worth it if you can find a cheap ticket, but don't expect luxury. read more

Took roundtrip trip DC to Charlotte. You get a little more than you pay for. For starters, you load your own luggage. I had no issue but others on my bus did. Our bus driver did not have much of a personality but she got us every where on time. The little more that you get for your money is the wifi and power plugs at each seat on the bus and the 30 min stop to eat at a truck stop. I was not expecting a stop for us to get something to eat. My only complaint is the lack of leg room and the small seats. If you know the bus is full, try and get in the middle of the lone so you can pick who want to sit next too. If you get on first, you don't know who might sit with you (I look for someone who is sleeping and listening to music). I will definitely use them again. It's cheaper than driving and I can read or surf the Internet. read more

I was extremely disappointed in Megabus. We were picked up in a charter bus that had no sign of Megabus on it anywhere. The bus had no charging stations or on board WiFi available. This would have been fine if it was not advertised as if it did. I had work to finish on the bus, but was unable to do so with no WiFi. I called customer service to complain and I was told 3x in a scripted conversation "we only make a reasonable effort" to provide those things. No where on the website does it say "reasonable effort". It says these items would be included in the price. Customer service and experience were poor. read more
