My friends and I were 5 minutes late to our "reservation" and gave the hostess a heads up about it. This sauce is excellent! But it's much different than the Le Relais de l'Entrecote restaurant in Paris. I think their sauce was heavy in tarragon because it was mostly green not brown. However, this has a wonderful rich taste that includes (I thinkonly guessing) chicken livers, red wine, cream, butter, some tarragon, onion and a touch of garlic. Wow! I had been waiting to try Medium Rare ever since the original review came out in the Washington Post and our Friday night dinner did not disappoint! The menu of course only revolves around a single option- steak. If you're only going to do one thing you've got to do it right and they sure do. The steak is perfectly cooked and smothered in the perfect creamy steak sauce that combines the flavors of a rich steak sauce and Dijon mustard. The fries are exactly how you'd expect to eat steak frites in France. Even the salad wowed with the perfect house dressing that managed to keep my dad, who loves heavy dressing, and my mom, who loves light dressing, both cleaning their plates. The beverage list is longer than the food options and I can't wait to go back and do it all over again! read more

When the mimosa I ordered was poured, I was told, "Just so you know, a whole bunch of pulp just landed in your glass- so you can either just drink it, or use your spoon to fish it out." I guess he meant the spoon I had stirred my coffee with? Service in general was extremely haphazard. I ordered the benedict, which was not only not as described, but looked like wet dog food (again, not hyperbole). I was actually surprised that they would present the food that way- totally unappetizing. The meaty slop, which was supposed to be "cubed steak" was room temperature, and underneath it was a soggy piece of bread (the same bread from the bread basket). Medium Rare is my favorite steak place in the DC area. It is ridiculously affordable-basically $20 per person for bread, salad, and two servings of steak frite. The food is delicious. I have never had a bad meal here, or at the location in NW DC. The desserts are terrific too, so save room if you can. I highly recommend the sundae, chocolate cake, and key lime pie. Tonight I dined with my grandparents, and the staff took such excellent care of us. They made sure to give us a quieter table near the window so my grandfather would be away from some extra noise and could hear better. It was so thoughtful; we had the best time. What a fun concept. Look no further to understand that there is no selection on the menu. Don't bring your vegetarian friends here. They will be hungry. Here's what you get for a fixed price: really delicious crusty bread with butter, a house salad with a Dijon vinaigrette, and a plate of steak with fries and their secret sauce on top. Then, 10 minutes later, you get a second plate of the steak with the fries. Don't be surprised when they come back to your table. Simple, tasty, great sauce even though I am not a steak sauce person. If one really specializes in something, it better be good. Jack of all trades, master of none makes sense, but one trade and not a master... not really? Anyways, the husband and I went here for brunch because we heard some great things about Medium Rare, and we both prefer that to be the temperature of our steaks as well. The brunch menu is simple - Unlimited/bottomless drinks - pick either mimosa, bloody mary, coffee, or orange juice. My husband cannot drink alcohol, so he got the coffee, and I got the bloody mary. For bottomless, it wasn't bad. The coffee was good too. Choose a small starter, such as yogurt with dried fruit, fruit salad, green salad. The husband got the green salad and I got the fruit salad. Both were good. Very standard, and they try to make the presentation look better than the product, as the fruit salad was served in a wine glass. Choose your entrée - the husband got the steak frites and I got the steak and eggs. We both got the same steak, cooked medium rare. The steak itself had more of a peppery flavor, and the sauce they have definitely made it taste good. Without it, it'd just be chewy and semi-bland. It was still a bit chewy for most pieces we got, but oh well... The steak frites had steak and fries, and the steak n eggs had steak, eggs (either scrambled or poached (I chose poached)), and fries. It seemed to be the better "worth it" brunch entrée compared to the 2. They also had some other ones, such as some kind benedict or sausage, but we just heard so many great things about their steak frites. The price was ~$25 a person, which sounds great for bottomless drinks, steak, etc. If the steak had better texture and tasted better, I'd definitely bump up the # of stars here. read more

Don't go here on a Saturday night if you want an enjoyable experience. Even at 6:15 they were so crowded we had to huddle by the host stand waiting for our (reserved) table. Our server never came back to refill water or see if we needed anything. Food runners delivered our good like robots. It was so loud we could barely talk with each other. By the time we left there were easily 30 crowded near tables and in the tiny bar area, making it so claustrophobic I wanted to escape. Review for brunch only. Their brunch is a great deal- $25 for bottomless Mimosas/Bloody Marys/coffee/etc. It was not crowded around 11:30, and we had no problem getting a table. Only about six choices for brunch, which still took me awhile to decide. I had the steak Eggs Benedict. Poached egg on an English muffin with steak pieces and a hollandaise-like sauce. Steak was cooked well and not chewy at all. Also served with fries. The brunch special includes a choice of yogurt parfait, fruit salad, or green salad as an app. I had the green salad and really enjoyed it- good dressing. We got some of the "special sauce" of dinner fame to try with the fries, and that was unique and very good. I also had a bite of my friend's French toast, and that was very good- dense but also crispy on the outside almost like it was fried- I would probably get that next time. Overall, a good brunch experience (although they did give us skim milk with our coffee which was weird, but replaced it after we asked...). I would go there again. read more

We had reservations and arrived on time and were told we needed to wait even though there were several tables open. We witnessed several groups leave after they waited for over an hour past their reservation time. Two guests were screaming at the host and the manager was no where to be found. The host was very nice but clearly overwhelmed. We were sat 30 minutes past our reservation time, it took another 15 minutes for a server to even acknowledge us. We were trying to flag staff members down, a manager saw us and completely ignored us. The staff was really nice but clearly drowning with the volume of business. We were at our table for an hour and a half and the manager was standing at the bar talking to bar guests and watching tv the entire time. Not once did we see him try to help his staff who, again, were drowning. His mask was also under his chin the entire time, which is a violation of Montgomery County's mask mandate. There's something to be said for small menus. I appreciate a place that does a few things, and does them well. You go to Medium Rare for a set meal that includes bread, salad, fries, and culotte steak with a sauce I can only assume is secreted by angels. If someone in your party wants pasta, or sandwiches, or seafood, or whatever, go somewhere else. Or better yet, ditch them and go here anyway; who needs friends like that? The steak itself is actually not why I like Medium Rare. It's good, but a culotte is just never going to compete with a ribeye as far as I'm concerned. But don't worry, the sauce is delicious, and all of the other items are simple but perfectly done. It's a pretty solid deal at $20. I like the ambience too; it hits that sweet spot where it feels slightly upscale but not pretentious. We went here today to meet up with my aunt and celebrate my daughter's 12th birthday. We had a horrible experience and we will never return. We initially used OpenTable to get a reservation for outdoor seating, but when we arrived there was no outdoor seating and they offered us to either wait for 20 minutes or sit inside. So we sat inside because we didn't want to be difficult and we just want to enjoy each other's company. We were seated at 1:11 PM, and our server Justin came over at 1:15 PM. He took our drink orders and said he would be back with our drinks and bread. We got nothing at our table until 1:40 PM. Meanwhile the table that sat down next to us after we arrived already had drinks bread and had ordered from their server. After I got up to request our server come by our table, he had a really bad attitude with us as if he was doing us a favor to come and service. While I live by the motto that you don't know what's going on in their life so treat them with kindness, when you're in the customer service business there's only so much I'm willing to take. I have been a waitress and bartender before so there is a certain level of bullshit I'm willing to take and this was not it. After he brought salads and basically threw them on the table, I decided to go speak with a manager. The manager was at the bar mixing drinks, and while I am sympathetic because brunch can be busy and I have been there before this was no excuse. While I tried to explain the situation to her, Justin tried to fight with me multiple times like we were siblings. I'm not your damn sibling Justin, I am a customer at an establishment that you work at to provide service, not argue with. I was just trying to have a good afternoon with family and celebrate my daughter's birthday, but that did not happen. Bottom line was bad food, horrible drinks, and even worse service. We will not return. EVER. On top of that we were there for my daughter's birthday, and they didn't even offer her anything special for her birthday or say happy birthday to her. I'm trying to remember how I ended up at Medium Rare. I seem to end up at a lot of places by accident. Oh yeah, because I'm a degenerate I tried to walk into Woodmont Grill on either a Friday or Saturday night with no reservation and it was like an hour wait lol. My girlfriend and i just started walking until we saw something that looked appealing. I had heard some good things about Medium Rare, knew they served steak but didn't know anything else. I was not aware of the prix fixe menu but I was not disappointed. The menu included artisan rustic bread, mixed green salad, and TWO servings of steak frites. The big surprise was that second serving of steak frites lol. I was sitting there digesting discussing the meal with my girlfriend when the waiter came to the table with a giant pan and stared serving us more steak, frites, and their special sauce. The food was good and the experience is fun too. To be honest I much prefer the steak frites at Mon Ami Gabi but Medium Rare is a different experience. Much more casual, less stuffy. This is a difficult place to review because I have a love/hate relationship with it. The French toast is amazing! It's probably the best I've ever had. Similarly, the steak and frites are also amazing! However, everything is overpriced for what you get. Brunch is upwards of $30 and dinner $40-50. Yes, the food is good, but it's not the quality you would expect for the money. I've given it three stars based on these thoughts. Had several friends/colleagues say the Medium Rare in the Cleveland Park was good but since I live closer to Bethesda, I tried the Bethesda location. We got the signature steak entree. The bread was good, the salad was just ok, fries were way too salty (so had to re-order with no salt), but the steak was good, especially considering the extra serving of steak and the price point. The server however was not on point. I would say the restaurant was only a third full. The server didnt check up on us so we had to get up twice to go find him. We even had to get up to go get our check. A bit disappointed in that. Think I'll try the Cleveland Park location as I've heard good things about their service. read more

We figured that if they only serve one thing, they probably do it really well. We were right. Food was delicious! Bread was standard but used more so as a vehicle for delicious butter. The salad was amazing. And the steak was cooked to perfection, with gravy and fries just as good. The place's only downfall is where it gets you money-wise: $20 for that menu is a great deal. But the wine is expensive and the desserts to share add up (they were delicious too, by the way). Overall, a great place for a budget steak dinner any night of the week! My wife and I have eaten here about 5 times this year. We have enjoyed it each time. They have been very very accommodating each time. Even last night the manager Vanessa stopped by to see if we were OK with a large party that was about to sit down. I usually eat my steaks medium rare but I have this cut of steak medium rare +. The meat is seasoned well with salt and pepper. But what sets the meal off is the peppercorn like sauce they have. I put the sauce on my fries as well as the steak. I don't do salads but my wife liked it. The hearth like bread is tasty and warm. I even use the bread to sop up the remaining sauce on my plate. That sauce is EXCELLENT! The selection of libations is adequate. As I read earlier the wines selection is OK nothing to write home about. The deserts are good. Warm apple pie, rich chocolate cake are my two favorites. Service is prompt and attentive. Overall a good dining experience. If you are coming here looking for Mortons or Ruth's then you missed the sign on the door. They do one thing and one thing only. I was excited to try Medium Rare for my birthday. My friend and I ordered our food to be delivered and we especially wanted dessert since we were celebrating. The food arrived very fast but it was missing the dessert. I called the restaurant and was given the run around. I just wanted the cake delivered. The manager NEVER returned my call and the hostess who picked up the phone could have easily fixed this situation. I called a 2nd time and still no cake.
