Happy new year. It's 2023 (for the sake of context, I met Chris in 2012.) He took me through the standard 10 session Rolfing regimen, which I found to be remarkably therapeutic. I had expected some pain in his bodywork, but there was none. He merely eliminated the tension and tightness in my fascia between my muscles--all over my body. I had a work-related accident after seeing Chris and went to other specialists for an ACL repair and did not continue with Chris for rehab. Consequently, nine or 10 years later, I began to have trouble with the same side of my body that I had injured. I had incredible tightness in my hamstrings, my quads, my knee, and I was having trouble with my feet. I had even developed a hammer toe. I went to see Chris to help me with my achilles pain. I had tried to resolve it myself but it was stubborn.  I didn't want to give up my walking and exercise regime and sought Chris out. He has a whole body approach. Chris was able to retrain me in many areas. I am right handed and therefore right dominant in much of my movements. Chris is a life saver!!! I came to him in awful shape, with awful posture and a ton of knee and hip pain with the goal of running my first half marathon in three weeks. I honestly do not know where to begin. It's been about 4 months now that I have been seeing Chris regularly and he has really changed my life. I have had chronic hip, lower back pain and sciatica for over 20 years. The MRI and X-Rays were always clear and no doctor could figure out my pain. The first time I word the word ROLFing I was in the Faroe Islands for what I am told is the first destination wedding ever held there in July 2019. Being able to attend the wedding was somewhat of a miracle in and of itself given what I had been through the previous few months. What had started out as seemingly just tight hamstring soreness a year earlier had morphed into debilitating sciatic leg pain that threatened my career and led to all matter of failed interventions including Physical therapy, Chiropractic adjustments and exercises, massage therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, inversion table traction, personal training sessions, epidural injections, and finally, multiple back surgeries. While the first microdiscectomy appeared to offer some relief and the surgeon indicated he removed calcified disc material which was unlikely to heal on its own, some of the sciatic pain remained. Next, the surgery site became infected and created a tear on my dura wall creating massive CSF leak. I needed two more surgeries to repair the leak and clear the infection. Hospitalized for over a week. And a PICC line for six weeks. It was the darkest time of my life. By the time July rolled around, I had made it through the worst of it but was beginning to feel like it was all for nothing as my sciatic pain still remained. Sometimes I even got stuck in my hotel room bed out in the Faroes. I was willing to try almost anything to gain my life back. Well, Chris brought it back. Over the past several months Chris has helped me identify multiple small issues about how I use my body that have built up over time to cause painful symptoms. If I could give Chris six stars I would. I came to him with severe back pain Which I had tried everything possible to rectify naturally medicated surgically you name it. Before Optima Structural Integration, I was experiencing excruciating pain in my lower back. I was injured at work in 2008, and found that I had both herniated and bulging discs, as well as grade 1 Spodylosthesis in my lower back. After I sustained the lower back injury at work in my mid 30s, it made me think about my own body soberly. In other words, I realized that I wasn't invincible, and it caused me to adjust the way I moved at work, after years of physical therapy. After I received my diagnosis, I went through various treatments, including disc decompression therapy, chiropractor adjustments, electric shock therapy, deep tissue massage and core strengthening excercises. The physicians also had me take ibuprophen, muscle relaxers and pain killers daily. None of these treatments or medications brought any noticeable lasting lower back pain relief. I found out about Chris through my internet research about treatment for my back. We searched both Google and Yelp, and when my wife and I read up about structural integration, we felt that it offered a more natural, and sustainable rehabilitation for people with injuries like mine. The thing that really caught my attention were the reviews of others who have had similar issues with lower back pain and the fact that they were able to find more lasting back pain relief through a deep tissue massage therapy called, "rolfing" while other treatments didn't help them. I wasn't really sure what kind of massage it would be when I had my first appointment. I have had deep tissue massages in the past, but SI was different than what I had experienced in the past. When I received deep tissue massage before, it was concentrated around the area of the back injury, whereas structural integration concetrates on the function of the body as a whole, working on other muscle groups that I have used in order to continue to work with my back injury. In other words, I had wrongly adjusted the way that my body functions throughout the work day, favoring my left side and putting unnecessary stress on other parts of my body because of overcompensation. My experience with the 10- series (so far) has been good. I have noticed a positive difference at both work and home after treatments and have been doing my best to form better habits throughout the week. Before SI I would favor my left side in order to alleviate back pain. I am learning that this hasn't helped me, and in fact, I need to stop these old habits. I feel that my SI treatments with Chris have opened my eyes more as to how my body is supposed to function. I have really tried so many treatments and medications in the past to try and manage back pain. I was prescribed Vicodin, Fexeril and Ibuprophen, none of which brought me any lasting or sustainable back pain relief. I feel that rather than "putting a bandaid on large wound," this treatment is going to the root of the back pain that I have experienced for years. SI has helped at work and outside of work as well. After having treatment on the weekend, I have noticed an improvement in overall flexibility and the ability to work longer hours than before. I just went through a a six week period where 7 major life catastrophes hit and I ended up in the ER. The ER doctor's did a lot of tests and concluded it wasn't a heart attack, or a stroke, they dismissed the idea it could be a problem in my neck and ssid it was highly unlikely to be stress related and sent me home. I had  vertigo, serious tingling sensations in my arms and legs extreme tension in my neck and back of my head, blurry vision, pain in my left arm, tight/tense/ rigid chest and shoulders. His hands on work was very helpful but he also gave me homework. He taught me how to breath and use my body to change the tension in my chest and neck. After 1 session my arm pain was gone after 2 sessions I had no more tingling in my arms and legs. The third session we did a lot of posture and breathing work between that and the homework my chest and shoulders were relaxed and movable again. Now after 4 sessions and really following the homework he gave me the only symptom I still have is I wake up with the neck tension some days but it's getting better and less frequent. I was lucky to have met Chris 15 years ago after a MCL (knee) injury from playing soccer. I was taking 800mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day just to be able to work.  I was planning on knee surgery. Chris is Amazing! I came to him after many chiropractors in my life told me to check Rolfing out. I get massages and bodywork very regularly but for the past year I've been dealing with occasional numbness in my fingers from thoracic outlet syndrome. I took my son for a session due to my son suffering a lower back injury in his Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. I tried traditional pain therapy ice, ibuprofen, rest but my son was still in pain. Chris's rolfing series is not an instantaneous, quick fix but he was right about the body slowly restructuring and the effects being long-lasting. My hip pain is nearly gone and my biggest improvement has been in my recovery. There were plenty of days where I had a very difficult time getting out of bed after tough training sessions the day before. Those days seem to be behind me. I highly recommend rolfing and I highly recommend Chris. You will be hard pressed to find someone else with as much knowledge and passion for his craft. Get rid of the PAIN !! I have had seeing chiropractors and massage therapists for the past 30 years for my neck, lower back and hip issues. After seeing them I would be better for a week, however the results were never long-lasting. I highly recommend Chris! I didn't have any particular problem when I first went to see him, but I wanted to see how he could help my body have better posture and be healthier. It was a great session! Note: this isn't your typical spa-ish pampering, relaxing massage (though I love those too!). Chris does deep, therapeutic work and I felt every fiber of my muscles really being worked over. His work was intense, but not painful to me and when our session was over, I got up feeling like I was standing tall and my whole body felt lighter! I came here recommended by a friend to be checked out for my shoulder. I had so much pain that I could reach forward without making a cringe. I met up with Chris and right away he knew what wrong with my shoulder and enlightened me about this new form of therapy in which you use your mind to focus on your body to help enable to trust whichever side of the body that's not dominant more. In my case it was my left shoulder. After his work in just his assessment I felt immediate results by doing the stretches, positions, and training my self mentally to trust that side of the body more and then the pain was gone after a few days of working on it. I came to Chris with some mild to moderate back pain and tightness, stemming from 2 minor car accidents and some other injuries spanning the last 6 years. Before him, I had seen chiropractors, and physical therapist and had some success but there were some areas that still needed help. I saw Chris 11 times and over the course of that time my back pain is all gone, and the chiropractor I had been currently seeing, she noticed how much more relaxed my back was when I began treatments with him. Chris's methods were different from other body workers I've seen, he doesn't always address the area that is actually hurting or tight, but that area comes out feeling relief. I also found it really helpful that Chris offered new perspectives and insights on pain; once I changed how I viewed it and the different areas it can stem from, it changed how I felt it. I am a definite advocate for rolfing now, because it feels like he got to the root of the issue instead of just jamming his elbow in where it hurts. Chris really knows what he is doing. I hurt my back working out and was in quite some pain; it hurt simply getting in and out of my car as well as walking. I found him on Yelp and read some of the fantastic reviews. I was looking for a massage to help relieve the pain, not for relaxation. Since he specializes in pain management and I needed an emergency same appointment, I was so fortunate he had availability that worked with my schedule. Response to my inquiry was quick and easy. After a little bit of paperwork and some assessment of my body alignment (actually misalignment), he worked his magic. With just a few initial movements and pressure massages, I started feeling some pain relief. After the full session, the pain was lessened by about 70-80%. He did set the expectation I was still going to feel some of the pain but to give it a little bit of time. Since I'm no longer a young spring chicken, I knew I had to give my back sometime to heal properly. It has now been a week and a half and I'm 90% back to normal. My doctor recommended Chris to me when I complained of not being able to take as deep of breaths as I'd like. I was a little doubtful that what I assumed was just massage would be able to help, but I've seen him for about 4 sessions now and I've been quite surprised. He does some magic combination of massage (or is it something else?) and actually being able to verbalize not what's WRONG with the way you're holding/carrying your body but what might feel more right. Which is REALLY powerful for me- yeah, I know I slouch but he was able to describe the alternative in a way that I hadn't heard before. He's done this in a few different ways. Since seeing him I feel like my lungs have doubled in size- I'm no longer taking breaths just in the front of my body but using my back too, somehow. My posture has improved a TON. And last week he did something to my neck and the back of my head that spoke SO MUCH to some mild but chronic discomfort that I've grown really used to in my neck! It was insanely relaxing- it was as though suddenly my head was easy to hold up instead of my having to use a ton of effort. Hard to describe.
