I'm about 4 weeks post-op from carpal tunnel surgery and initially planned to see a PT, but due to scheduling delays (3-4 weeks out), I was dealing with pain and stiffness at the base of my palm from built-up scar tissue. I found Dr. Asturias through Yelp and I'm so glad I did! He clearly has deep expertise in breaking down scar tissue to promote healing. Over the past 4-5 weeks, I've had 7-8 sessions with him. Each one starts with wrist adjustments and stretching, followed by Graston therapy to break up scar tissue and improve circulation, and ends with light therapy to accelerate healing. I won't lie--each session is painful (feels like torture at times!), but I see noticeable results within a day or two. When I first saw him, I couldn't even push press a 10lb dumbbell or squat because I couldn't bend my wrist back. Also, I was feeling immense pain at the base of the palm with any contact. After just a few sessions, I was pressing my pre-surgery weight and squatting again without pain. Dr. Asturias is incredibly skilled, thorough, and down to earth--super easy to talk to and makes the whole process efficient. My review is long overdue. I experienced incredible healing through the ShockWave (SoftWave) treatment offered at SportsPlus. I broke my ankle in 2019 and had issues with the healing and residual pain even after over 1 year of PT (graston scraping). Neck pain, hip replacement surgery rehab, and general stiffness. I came in for chiropractic care because of a stubbon neck kink. I've seen Richard for about a month and it's been much more than chiropractic for my neck. It feels more like rehab for my whole body. I absolutely love leaving their office because I always feel better. I have Kaiser and am allotted 30 visits with a copay of $15 per visit. I will be using all my visits and wish I had 30 more. Really not knowing what I was looking for in a chiropractor, I figured if I didn't like my experience, I'd find someone else. That being said, I highly recommend Dr. Asturias and SportsPlus. I've had three appointments so far, and I'm very happy with my progress. I fact, I've had lower back pain for years... not being able to stand up straight for up to five minutes after getting out of bed. And after my first visit and a very strong and relieving adjustment on my lower back and SI joints, I was able to get out of bed every morning without any lower back pain. With his experience, Dr. Asturias pinpointed the issue quickly! Going up to my upper back and neck, it's taking a few sessions to get things moving right again but I feel improvement in my comfort level and range of motion after each session. I came in limping and left walking like a normal person! Thank you Dr. Asturias! The full story: Two+ months ago, while running, I sprained my ankle and broke the 5th metatarsal on my left foot. While the fractures healed well, I was still having trouble with ankle mobility, balance, etc. Furthermore, my second toe suddenly started to hurt so much when I walked that I had to limp around due to the pain, which also prevented me from doing my rehab PT. I stayed off my feet a few more days, but the pain did not subside. I was pretty discouraged and pretty cranky about the whole foot fiasco. Referred by my friends at Pleasanton Fleet Feet, I sought care from Dr. Asturias. His office is conveniently located, plenty of parking nearby and is clean and pleasant. His staff are all helpful and very professional. Following a comprehensive series of questions and a careful physical exam, he took several actions with my bad foot (he referred to it kindly as my "healing foot") and leg: manipulation, deep tissue massage, more work on the tissue with a special tool, and application of Class IV laser on the trouble spots. He then ushered me into the exercise area and carefully showed me several physical therapy exercises to do at home, making sure that I understood proper technique and was doing them correctly. He is extremely knowledgeable/excellent about explaining the anatomy, bio-mechanics and the Why behind what is going on with my "healing" foot. (I'm a curious person so that works well for me.) By the time I left his office, my foot actually felt significantly better and while doing some errands afterwards, I noticed that I was not limping anymore and the pain had subsided substantially. I have needed chiropractic care my whole life since I was in high school. Most of them just adjust my back and use tens units and lazer. I have had chronic low back right hip pain. My back finally said enough and made me unable to move for 2 months. A massage therapist referred me to Dr Richard. Dr Richard gave me exercises that work and also did a lot of physio therapy and core exercises that I have not had explained to me before. "tall spine tight core" All I can say is try him. I made my appointment with Dr. Richard Asturias. Went in with skepticism to see if this method will heal my knee and back pain with proper posture adjustment. I've gone to physical therapy before but not much help to the root cause. The first visit was mainly for assessment, minor adjustment and some Q&A. To my surprise, I felt better aligned after that one session. For the next session, I was getting some good coaching strengthening exercises. The only thing that I did not like is the push adjustment. It caused a big bruise on the side of my thigh. Based on the phone video that I took for the exercises, I noticed that the doctor is wearing a HOKA brand shoes. So I went to get me a pair. That shoes and daily walking for 30 minutes are the answer to my recovery. Overall I appreciate Dr. Richard's willingness to answer all my questions. I am 5' 9", moderately overweight and fairly active physically. I workout in a gym 5 days a week, bike or hike 1/2 days a week. I used to run a lot a decade ago and busted my knee and ankle and had to give it up. I have been to multiple PT sessions and tried various different things in the past. I have visted a Chiropractor once, but on the first visit, they showed me a 20 minute video of how all I could get paralyzed. I never got a treatment and never went back. At my gym, I stupidly competed against a fitter 72 year old and dead lifted a weight I should not have and my lower back, which used to bother me in the past immediately acted up. I am currently preparing for a backpacking trip in late Sep and I have been hiking with 35 lbs on my back, so I wanted to make sure I don't end up crippling myself. Dr. Richard Asturias was referred to me by my colleague, who is a bicyclist and a racer. My colleague mentioned that Dr. Asturias himself is an avid bicyclist and knows his stuff. My first visit was an hour long. Richard loves his work and enjoys talking about how the body functions and why we get hurt. Thankfully, there was no video talking about paralyzing myself. He explained how to achieve optimal strength and do the fun stuff we like without injury, we need to have two things; better mobility and increased core strength. For mobility, on my first visit, Richard did a couple of adjustments. He explained what makes the popping sound (it is air and not bones) and set my expectations right. He then spent 20 minutes showing me core strengthening and stretching exercises. I went to my gym and I noticed that I was moving a lot more freely, as if someone had oiled my joints. I was surprised. I used some of the core strengthening techniques and every exercise felt different. My squats had a lot more power. My curls felt the way they should - on my biceps. Just about every exercise I did had an edge to them. After my second visit, I noticed that my feet were a lot straighter. Almost all my life, my feet were splayed out. PTs told me that my hip abductor muscles were not strong. No amount of training fixed the problem. After my second visit, I thought I was walking straighter. I then went on a 8 mile hike on Rancho San Antonio trail with my backpack. Usually at the end of such hikes, my knees would be very painful. This time, my knees were fine, but my calves were on fire. Richard explained in my third visit that since he adjusted my spine, my hip is now relaxed and more mobile. That freed up the legs to straighten, which meant that the legs did their job as they are supposed to instead of transfering it all to my knees. The calves were being used the way they are supposed to and since they are not used to this, they hurt. No wonder when I ran with these feet I busted my knees and ankle. I had mild back pain at the gym and so I have had couple more adjustments with Richard and I feel better each time. I have learned the proper way to stretch, use a roller and advanced core strengthening exercises in the process. I wish I had known Richard 10 years ago. I've never been to a chiropractor before today. My lower back has been hurting for years, since I was a teenager. But it just never seemed worth doing anything about. The pain usually goes away in a week, give or take. And I've been an endurance runner (though my short mileage these days may make that term laughable) for most of my life. But I'm getting up there in age now, and for the last 11 days straight, my lower back on my right side has been hurting non-stop, with the pain starting to spread to the right side of my butt, and also down the back of my thigh. Tomorrow I leave for a 16 trip, most of which will be hiking a section of the PCT. Admittedly, one of the shortest sections of it, but still, it's a daily hike and I was concerned about the pain getting worse due to the daily trekking. Luckily, SportsPlus had a cancellation, so I booked the appointment, went early, filled out the paperwork, and waited for just a few minutes for the previous patient to leave. Dr. Richard Asturias saw me after the kind receptionist took my information. After asking me several questions, and doing some tests, he let me know that my issue was largely a muscular issue, and not a nerve issue or herniated disk issue. He was honest in stating that without an x-ray or MRI, there's no way he could be certain, but his experience told him that the tests he did do revealed likely muscle issues, and maybe joint issues. Apparently, I've lost some range of motion. There isn't much motion. he ran several more tests, twisting my joints, testing reflexes, etc. and also running me through exercises I could do. All the while, he explained what was going on, what he was testing for, what things he was looking for, what he was ruling out with each test, ultimately, what he believed was going on. He had me try some exercises to see if things changed as well, and I genuinely felt less pain. The strong consistent ache plus shooting pains were both significantly reduced. Hard to believe how much better I feel, and glad to have DC Asturias work with me today, especially as it was a same day appointment, the day before a long trip. read more
