One of the worst companies in this great state and that is not a lie. Their customer service is horrible, their tech support is horrible and they are liars to top it all off. Last fall I found a promotional price on their website for their fastest internet speed. I called and confirmed with the local sales rep the deal and verified that even though I was current customer and still in the middle of a contract that I could upgrade. He said yes so I agreed. Got a new modem and the internet speed was outrageously fast. Then comes the bill three weeks later and I was charged more than double what I agreed to. Here comes the fun part. I call customer service and they flat out tell me that they have never heard of such a promotion. Even though in my account notes they can clearly see what the sales rep said and sold me and the guy even read them back to me. They refused to honor the quoted price. So after getting extremely livid I finally told them to just switch me back to what I was on before because I wasn't going to pay that much. He told me that the plan I was on before was not available anymore and they would have to put me into the plan most comparable...WHICH WAS $10 MORE A MONTH THAN WHAT I WAS PAYING FOR THE SAME THING!!!!!!!!!! So after all of that I ended up right back where I started at yet was paying $10 more a month. They are a giant scam but unfortunately they have a huge monopoly on high speed internet here in central Iowa. They are a necessary evil but just be forewarned that they will screw you over any chance they get. read more

My cable and Internet went out for over a week after calling for the 4th time in 2 days after 300 min on the cell phone a Representative tried to up-sale me to a business account saying that I would still have service. Even though I had told the representative that a construction worker accidental cut my line she still insisted I would still have service and said i should upgrade. hmmmmmm. my suggestion get DSL and a Dish! read more

I'm surprised to see all the negative reviews, I definitely see where all the negative comments are coming from and completely agree, but it does not tell the whole story. I have had Mediacom for years, since I moved to the Des Moines area, because I was told their service for internet was the best in town. Although I have never been with another provider I would support this comment because my internet is always fast and there may have been only one or two times in the past year when the service was down. I also have my cable from this company and have had little issues, they were able to repair any issues I did have when they arose, which was rare. Quality of the viewing experience is very good, only a small handful of times where there is an issue, but quickly disappears . Now for the negative points others have mentioned, they are most likely true when it comes to renewing or changing your plan. It is huge hassle and it seems like they are pulling charges out of thin air for services. Most of the time any promotional prices you see are not honored by the company due to it not being offered in your specific area. For customers, as long as you are okay with your current plan, do not look for their deals, it is a hassle. Another negative point, their service appointments are a long wait, you will probably be waiting up to a week to get someone out to fix something if it is a hardware issue. Having moved here 2 weeks ago from out of state, I can easily say this is the worst Internet provider I've ever experienced in 32+ years of life. First off let's just say that there are many people that work for this company that are wonderful people and they deserve all the kudos in the world. The problem isn't the employees as much as it is the company and how it is operated. We had a very bad storm last week in which our services with this company were out for 48 hours. It is understandable that with a bad storm utilities and services may be out for an undetermined amount of time. I have tried to reach out to the company various ways. If you call their main customer service line you are told there is an outage in the area and they are receiving a high volume of calls. You then reach a menu that is only automated and cannot get to a person. You are then given the option of texting. The first time I texted it took four hours for someone to answer my text. I was lucky enough to chat to a nice woman in a chat window on the final day of the outage. Needless to say; I was promised different things by different people and the only person that came through for me was the nice woman I chatted with. The reason I am writing this is because it is ridiculous for this company to think that a measly $18 is going to sustain me for 48 hours of non-service. Let's just say for instance that you make $25 an hour and you cannot remote in to your work. You have lost quite a bit of money in wages. I understand that this is considered a natural disaster. I understand that we are in the middle of Covid. This is a slap in the face to your customers who have been loyal to you. Your fiber optic network should be buried underground and not affected by the weather in Iowa. I get the issue of lines coming Into houses and into businesses that are outside and susceptible to these Highwinds. Iowa is in the middle of tornado alley and this should have been a measure that was taken with the company to provide service. So here we sit your faithful customers trying to get to you by chat, text, phone calls, emails and what we are receiving in return is nothing. Nothing but words with no intention behind them. I believe this will teach a lot of us a lesson about the type of services we may need to use from now on to ensure we are able to work from home. They can not be bothered to set your service up, except M-F 8-4. So if you work, you either need to take the day off, or no dice. The woman on the phone suggested I have my landlord sit in my house for a 4 hour period to wait for the installer. Before I move again, I will be sure this is not my cable provider. Don't sign up with this company if you have any other options! I've dealt with Verizon, Comcast and Cox cable and hands-down Mediacom is the worst cable/internet company provider by far! They changed their name to Xtreme and that stands for "extremely" bad. Their customer service is awful. On top of that, they charge almost twice as much as any other company. When you call up their number and finally get a person they're consistantly abrupt, rude, defensive and unhelpful. I've been a customer for almost 6 years and they don't give me any breaks on price even though I have had problems with the Internet going out on a regular basis. Mediacom is a joke! I have been trying to get my services fixed for months... They say they are gonna send out a tech (to change modem again for the second or third time in 2 months) appointment was supposed to be here between 5-7 didn't even get a call from them till 8 then the tech didn't even show up, apparently according to escalation department the tech cancelled the work order instead! Udderly rediculous. Call and call they transfer you around and around and don't even get the problem fixed! Think it's about time to contact the Media and let them investigate and do their story AGAIN because apparently nobody knows how to solve the problems or they just don't care about their customers. I started with mediacom a little over a year ago and constant issues. Signal super spotty, drops my calls, meetings etc. They swap one old modem for another and when not better tell you to go buy your own. This last round they supposedly reset and somehow managed to *replace my network name and password with a completely different user's info*. When I asked how this could possibly happen they told me it can be a byproduct of their customer service when their screen doesn't refresh properly... apparently that imprints somebody else's data on your connection!? We seriously have had them for a few years now pay a large amount for 1gig which would be fine but they have been out multiple times and no fix we are having ongoing uploads under 1 mbps.i work from home and can't work with that. Mediacom is the only non satellite service in my area. I made an appointment and of course they are not calling the "best" number for the technician to call. In addition I need a bucket truck because the tech cannot reach the connection point and no one can connect me to the local office to check on that. So as in the past I will have to wait and wait and wait through multiple appointments to get a bucket truck out there. As customer service has told me, they have really big ladders. Of course the techs don't want to reach out beyond an arms length to get it. Internet service is spotty and sometimes non-existent. Have had technician come out twice and they tweak one thing but it doesn't ever help much. Recently asked for another tech visit as we have been out of internet for 3 days and counting. Support made the appointment for the exact time I asked her not to. Also, was told there was an outage in the area on Sunday, then told that an outage actually never occurred when I talked to support again on Tuesday. Moved into a townhome after our house sold faster than we could buy another one. The only option for internet and cable was Mediacom. My husband scheduled an appt. for 3 receivers + TVO. An install guy came out & said he only had 1 receiver and no order for TVO. He came into our home with his nasty-arse work boots, no mask, no gloves...nothing. (COVID-19). My hubby called Mediacom to see about the other receivers and TVO. They sent out 2 more techs the next morning who came in without any protection or sanitary measures. They hooked up the other (2) receivers but no TVO service. My husband called Mediacom again (3rd time) & they said they would mail us a "box" for TVO and yet another tech would have to come out to program it. Oh....and wait for it...our bill would be MORE than we were told initially. And we have to wait 2 more weeks to get the TVO options. In the meantime, we get to watch a handful of crappy channels. YAY. :( This company SUCKS. We're only here temporarily until we find a new house, so there's that. But, when we do move again we will NEVER, EVER, EVER have Mediacom again. Horrible service! TERRIBLE customer service!!!!! There should be a rating of zero stars because they don't even deserve one star. Basically I've been out of the country for over 13 years while serving in the military and this is the first time I've tried to get internet service since 1998 in the US. Yes, it's been a long time! I found Mediacom is one of two servers that provide to the area that I live in. This evening, I gave them a call and the lady on the other end sounded old and disgruntled. I just tried to deal with and answer her questions. At one point, she asked me if I minded if the phone conversation was recorded and I said "yes". She then became irate stating that they couldn't do business with me if I didn't have the conversation recorded. I told her that I'm a disabled Veteran with PTSD and I just didn't feel like the stress of having the conversation recorded. As the conversation went on, she became more irate. I then asked her why do they give the customers an option to have the conversation recorded when in reality the customers don't have a choice? I eventually had to give in and agree for the conversation to be recorded. From there, the conversation didn't get any better. The disgruntled old lady then explained the services available. I then asked if they had any military/veteran discounts. She abruptly stated no. I went on to say thanks for your nonsupport. She then tried to explain what a great company they are and how they help Veterans, blah, blah, blah. She said that they give to some charity that gives shoes to children in need. I asked her how does that help vets and she hung up!!! She hung up!!! I called back and some other lady answered. I explained what had just occurred. She asked if I wanted to talk with the nasty old woman again and I said absolutely not. She then transferred me to "Kevin" who was basically a pompous idiot. As soon as he got on the phone he asked nothing about the situation that had just occurred between me and the nasty old woman. He went directly into trying to force me into a 2 year contract. It sounded as though he had me on a speaker phone and I could hear the laughing and remarks of other employees in the background. It was just very unprofessional. In all honesty, I was not trying to be difficult. I was just asking simple questions. If I have to pay for a service, I would like to be fully aware of the integrity of the company. Unfortunately, Mediacom doesn't have any. I ended up with CentryLink who has faster internet for the same price and no 2 year contact. They also provide military discounts!!! My new service has been a mess - mostly on the billing side. Paid with CC when they set up the service. Received 1st bill and signed up for auto pay immediately. I guess it it didn't pull for the first payment. 2nd bill showed past due amount and new amount but said on the bill - will be paid by autopay. The next morning after autopay, my internet is shut off. Called and talked to Brandy. She could not explain why it wasn't paid. Took the payment over the phone and got my internet back. I now get my next bill and there are 2 payments for the full amount. Mediacom actually took the auto-pay the day before they killed my service and then Brandy took it again the day they shut off my service. Now I have a huge credit with them. They also charged me for a service call (but later took it off when I protested). The tech came in and said "wow, that modem is really old and won't work well". It had been installed my Mediacom about 4 weeks prior to his visit. He said "you are way better off getting your own equipment, this is junk". At least the service works. Today at my apt building install tech did an install for someone and disconnected my cable while I was watching TV and using internet. On the way out I told him I lost service and he needs to go back and connect me. He told me not his fault and call tech support. Called and told 10 days before they can get there and it was not there fault. Very dissatisfied with them will be filing a complaint with the BBB on this. I have so many problems with this company starting the very first day. The installer came by and had to finish up so quick because he had to pick up child. I actually had to call to verify I had the service. A few months later my services were out. I called and was told it was a local outage. By the 5th day of having no internet, no phone, and no cable I called to say this was unacceptable. They found a " contracted employee" had turned my services off in error, they were at the wrong address! Additionally over the last 16 months I've had to have someone come out 3 different times because of problems. I only hope Yelp grants me enough space to list all the ways that Mediacom is a horror show. I despise Mediacom with a white hot fury that I normally reserve for child molesters and terrorists. It's no surprise that MC was voted the most hated company in the US and is dead last in Consumer Reports latest ratings. How did those in charge of choosing the cable monopoly for the DM area ever get talked into picking Mediacom? Whoever they were, I hope somebody else picks out their clothes. Now for the sordid details... Where do I begin? How about the internet speed that doesn't seem as fast as what we pay for and, even worse, Mediacom internet "service" is completely unreliable. I do so enjoy watching the little spinner thing on my computer go round and round and round and round. Of course, that is when it isn't down completely. Also, the modem they bless you with is from about a decade ago and it's a gem. Their cable TV offerings are a ripoff. Their channel groupings make no sense and are designed to entice you to pay for groups of several channels you don't want in order to get 1 or 2 you do want. The TV equipment is also horribly primitive! The nineties called and they want their remotes back. Ever try an advanced search on a Mediacom remote? It's an exercise in futility. Then there is their customer service, or I should say, lack of customer service. They make it a 50-step process that somehow rarely works to access your account or get assistance online, although they promote that option. So, you have to call their less-than-helpful and often crabby customer service people only to find that they usually can't help you over the phone so you have to wait up to a week to get a tech person to your house. Add to this lack of helpfulness, there is only one Mediacom location in the Des Moines area and it's downtown. We haven't been there yet, but I bet it has a moat around it to keep pesky customers away. If we decide to drive all the way down there to, oh say, exchange our crappy remote for a new crappy remote, we either drive all the way there or pay them $25 for the privilege of having them mail us a new crappy remote. I have heard that Mediacom's contract with some areas is up next year. How do we go about starting a petition drive to persuade city councils to kick Mediacom to the curb and bring in a new cable company... any cable company? We have lived in 4 states and been in Iowa for the last 9 years. This company has been horrible to deal with. Every year I have to call and threaten to cancel just to get my bill a bit cheaper. Well this year I've been told they no longer care, you may cancel if you wish but they will not get your bill cheaper anymore. I guess I don't need TV then. If I could give negative stars, i would. For 3 months i have been going around and around with mediacom charging for channels that are not working. They bully and try to wear you down. I have had a service call scheduled for 8-12 and then get a call from the tech to tell me he can't make it at 5pm. I try to reschedule and get blasted that if I want available after 5pm then I wasnt available all day. I have patiently awaited call backs that never come. I have set up new service over 3 times and for some reason they dont have record of it. I believe the customer service reps are either lazy or incompetent. They dont follow through and straight up lie about what they promise to do. I have been offered credits that dont end up making it to my bill. And I call to discuss and no one has record and they offer to listen to tape calls and get back to you in 24 hours. It has been a week since that call. They then charged me $250 to get my services hooked back up again. What a joke! They couldn't get someone out to fix my internet for 3 days! 3 DAYS! And when the technician came to fix the internet he didn't seem to know what he was doing and was here for almost 3 hours. Super annoyed with that. This has absolutely been the worst internet "service" I've ever had, and that is really saying something because my prior internet service was middle-of-nowhere garbage with outages galore. At least in that case, the price reflected this; not so with Mediacom! They conned me from the start, telling me that I would have 0 installation fees. Lo and behold, what do I see ony first bill? A $99 installation fee! So I was outright lied to from the start. After trying for days (yes, days) of trying and failing to get through to a real human via customer service, I accepted I was screwed and just dealt with it, as there are no other viable options for internet in my area and having service was a requirement as my children are doing remote learning. Then again, at least once a month, there are lengthy outages that interfere with their class time. These can exceed hours in some cases. Want an explanation? Not gonna happen. Ohhh, and then there is their "top of the line" modem that is such garbage, I cannot even connect my rudimentary security cameras to it. All this for the lovely price of $70 a month!! I could go on, but I think my point is made. We use double the amount of data they provide. They say oh you can upgrade. No we can't we have the plan we due because of our budget and that is what fits into our budget. Internet barely ever worked had to call them once a week to hit my box so my modem and router would start communications because their maintenance weekly took out net and cable. Customer service has never been so poor and their lack of communication and clearity will leave you in a tight spot more than once garunteed.
