Meat and Co is a creative sandwich shop in New Haven's upscale East Rock Market Food Hall. If you notice the sign, you'll see they've rotated the lower case "a" in "Meat" so it's upside down. Think of it as a culinary warning that they don't do things the normal way. I've had two sandwiches from Meat and Co. on two separate visits in 2025. The first was the Haute Tuna Melt. The tuna salad itself was good. It has some hot pepper and chive flavor. The tuna sandwich was on a panini-pressed ciabatta roll. I prefer some type of grilled sliced bread, which I think is more common, for a tuna melt. But that's fine. The biggest miss for me was the cheese. The American Cheese was not at all melted. So it's really just a tuna fish sandwich with American Cheese, Lettuce and Tomato. Good for what it was, but it wasn't a Tuna Melt. The second was The Rick Reuben. It must be more "Rick" than "Reuben". because it is the least "Reuben" Reuben sandwich I've ever had. It had pastrami, which is acceptable for a Reuben. That was about it. Instead of kraut, they had a mild red cabbage slaw. Instead of Swiss, they had cheddar. Instead of grilled rye bread, it was on a long panini-pressed pretzel roll. Admittedly, I didn't pay careful attention to the menu description because Reubens usually fall into one of a small number of types, and I like them all. Although, the online menu I saw did not reference the pretzel roll. This sandwich was too far away from any accepted form of Reuben to be called a Reuben. If it had been called a Pretzel Pastrami Melt, which is far more accurate, I wouldn't have ordered it. It was fine for it was. The pastrami was average though. Given how much I like the other East Rock Market vendors, I'm unlikely to return. If you go, pay close attention to the menu and maybe ask questions. 3.25 Stars read more

I was excited to find out that there was a panini shop near me and I want on 1/2/26 a Friday night at 6 pm and the person working there seems like he did not want to work! He was in his phone the whole time. I asked if it was a panini and he said "no, ciabatta". I ordered a Voodoo chicken which was supposed to be spicy but it was disappointing with no flavor . My husband ordered a steak and cheese and the steak was cheap cut mostly gristly. Our paninis were not toasted, COPD AND HARD BREAD and I'm not sure why as they have the equipment to do it. We also ordered fries but the person refused to make them and said " I don't have any ready ". Okay but can you get some ready? He was extremely lazy and didn't want to work. I very much enjoy the meat at Meat. It's a great quick bite, late night snack, filling dinner. It's a choose your adventure kind of treat. I've been hyped to try this place for a while since I love a good sandwich. The location is small and hidden but easy enough to find. The sandwiches were easy to order online and ready on time. The sandwiches themselves were pretty good. The steak sandwich was very sparse on the steak but it was quite tasty. The chicken sandwich was fine, but the chicken wasn't too flavorful. The idea of this place is to have a no frills but unique sandwich experience. It is an offshoot of 116 Crown. This was my second visit. I brought along a couple of friends. Two of us shared a couple of sandwiches; The Revenge of Mr. Jeremy Fisher smoked trout, pea tendrils, pickled radish, ladybird dressing Uncle Orie (cubano) #hotfire walden hill ham, brie, tomato, garlic bread The sandwiches tastes pretty good but for $10 they need to be much better. In today's market you need to have a whole grain bread. We have great bakeries in New Haven so there's no excuse. The garlic bread with the Uncle Orie wasn't very garlicky. Additionally, we wanted the special on the board which was a smoked whitefish but upon ordering were told it was last week's special and they were out. This was on a Tuesday and they said the specials go Wednesday to Wednesday. Lastly, no diet soda and out of chips. The person making my the sandwiches was the manager. Such a perfect lunch place--we think it's the best sandwich in New Haven. Wish it was just a bit closer to the med campus, though it makes a nice once-in-a-while treat... We tend to stick with the beef sandwiches here, especially the God Forbid (though I've been curious to try the Bluto, which pairs spicy chicken and honey mustard ). Love the juicy + flavorful meat here, and the perfectly grilled / slightly crunchy bread. The God Forbid has roast beef and liverwurst along with a sweet onion jam. The sweetness of the liver and jam are perfect together. All the sandwiches are pressed to grill until a nice crust develops and cheese melts and crisps at the ends. Not greasy, and a good amount of salt (perfect for me, might be a touch high for others). Altogether, Meat & Co makes a high end-style sandwich at a very fair price for the quality (~$10). It's kind of small and casual (stool seating), but we haven't ever had a problem getting a seat. Service is fast. I sometimes forget but there's a nice lunch special on Monday, plus--though I've never tried it--absolutely perfect (as in hearty af) late night specials Sat/Sun (8 PM - 3 AM). My experience at Meat & Co was decidedly subpar. I called ahead and ordered the Rick Reuben and was promptly told they were out of the red cabbage slaw topping - on an normal weekday at lunchtime. Ok fine, I said, it's just cabbage. Hopefully the sandwich still tastes good. Even with one fewer ingredient, though, it took the employees ages to assemble a simple sandwich. There were only 2 people in the store total, but the workers seemed unmotivated and sometimes confused. The sandwich ingredients bar seemed disorganized, and the panini press looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. If GHeav/Good Nature Market can maintain a clean and well-organized sandwich counter, then you can too, Meat & Co - especially since it's your entire business. I had called ahead with my order 10 minutes in advance but still waited another 15 minutes in the store, which was especially annoying since I was catching a Metro-North train right afterward. This was my first time coming to Meat & Co and I'm hoping it won't be my last! Ended up coming here on Saturday night when my friend suggested coming here. The place itself is very small and kind of tucked away. The menu here is pretty awesome and gives you a nice variety along with some cool names like the "Cypress Hill" and the "Rick Reuben". I had to order "The Bluto" which was a spicy fried chicken sandwich with honey mustard in between some buttermilk biscuits. I really enjoyed the sandwich even though I wasn't completely sold on the biscuits (just didn't win me over). The chicken itself was juicy and tasted fantastic. The Person working was very rude and short tempered, grumpily half assed answered two questions, the online posted hours are INCORRECT (which they are aware of and haven't fixed we drove 30 mins to try it "the best sandwhiches in the state" sunday and they were closed ), i heard employees of the building talking about how even they don't know the hours, the cafeteria setting is sort of dismal, the Reuben has absolutely no mention of blazing hot mayo with peppers on the menu m, my 60 year old father choked on how hot it was. Chicken Ceasar salad wrap had brown wilted lettuce and unripe tomatoes, in it and either dark meat or old chicken in it ( i couldn't tell). Cost us 30$ dollars for two sandwhiches that we tossed. For the most part, I agree with Cathy. I loved the play on name, so I went with the Rick Reuben. with Chips + Drink it came to $15.50. I think that's the most i've dropped on a sandwich lunch combo, ever. For $10+ i was expecting a rueben to rival the stack of meat I would get a place such as Katz or Carnegie Deli. Nope, What arrived was a mini-me clone of those places. i was lucky to get 5 oz of meat, on a pretzel roll no bigger than the palm of my hand. While it WAS insanely delicious, I left hungry and looking for something else to eat, and I assure you that's never happened at Vito's (check them out the next block over, you can get enough to feed 4 people for the price of 1 sandwich here). So the ingredients are organic and local, but the hippie culture doesn't impress me when their draining my wallet. A treasure of New Haven! When you tell me that we're going to a sandwich shop, I think of cold cut sandwiches with cold cheese... not a huge fan. But Meat & Co is one of those sandwich shops that are on a completely different tier. The shop is small with not much seating (some outdoor seating), but people are flocking to this place. They offer a limited selection of sandwiches, but they all sound awesome. The Benny Frank is a delicious combination of Fig preserve, turkey, cheese and bacon (if you so choose). Im attending Gateway community college this upcoming semester and my girlfriend had mentioned this place to me. I went there and ordered the God-forbid. This Liverwurst and roast beef sandwich was delightful. It had caramelized onions, balsamic red onion jam, young cheddar and sesame and coriander. The balsamic red onion jam was exquisite. When you think of a sandwich, this was just out of this world. Imagine flavor exploding down each section of your tongue with each bite. That is exactly what this small sandwich shop delivers. The meat was terrific in quality, extremely tender and perfectly cooked. The toppings were perfect, the bread was pressed to perfection as well, not burnt but also not mushy. Also as a bonus i came here on monday and there was a lunchbox special so they call it, and it came with a soda, a small pasta salad and two raspberry cookies! Overall this small hole in the wall restaurant was clean, the staff was super friendly and the food was a treat. Pictures coming up my next time here! Sandwiches: Sometimes out of this world, almost always very good, very occasionally a bit underwhelming. Could work on consistency of prep and presentation; ingredients are generally beyond expectations though. 4.5 stars because 9 times out of 10 they are really very good. Price is fair (especially with the Monday lunch deal) since the sandwiches are huge, and have unique store-made ingredients. Location: Excellent, easy to access by transit or biking. Close to hundreds of other nice restaurants and places to go. Cool outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Definitely a 5. Service: A little hands off, and as others have pointed out it can be really quite slow at times. Try to come right when it opens or later, when it's not busy. I think the sandwiches are better then too. Sometimes they run out of things, but usually friendly about it. I'll go with a 3 but please keep in mind that it's a counter, not trying to be a sit down restaurant. Ambiance: Lighting and interior is cool but basic. May be I caught Meat & Co on an off-day, but wow, my D. Wayne Johnson sandwich was very disappointing. Yelp, why hath thou failed me?! Read below for why that is: Firstly, the simplest issue was that the organic tomatoes were out of season for my sandwich, so they were substituted--not a big deal if this was the only issue. Secondly, the salad cream actually hindered the flavor of the sandwich. It could be that I got leftover salad cream (or may be a substitute again? ha), but the taste was really bland and it made the sandwich taste weird. It tasted like off-flavor mayo--it had a similar mouthfeel, but again, that taste--I'm somewhat scarred by it. It completely ruined the sandwich and conflicted with every other flavor. Thirdly, the only employee, who was handling the register, orders, and food preparation seemed out of it. He was a nice guy, but he wasn't sociable and since I was there without other patrons, it made the small room setting, that is Meat & Co, awkward. This hurt the ambience, which again, is tight, and sandwich preparation takes some time. Also, the air in the room smelled terribly of smoke--seems like inadequate ventilation, even though it sounded like the vent hood was on. I do give the employee credit for taking off one glove to handle money and then replacing it, when getting back to the food. Unfortunately, after having a few bites of my sandwich, the employee also realized that he forgot to add the bacon to my sandwich. I got to witness firsthand the moral conundrum of someone seriously mulling over if he should inform me or play it off. As a serendipitous social psychology experiment, this was intriguing, but also disconcerting--fortunately, he chose to let me know after a bit of time. Although overdone, the bacon truly was the shining moment of the sandwich by slightly off-setting the incredibly unpleasant taste and texture of the salad cream. Overall, for the price of $10, the small (size was another issue) "organic" (but substituted) sandwich is a gimmick off-season. It appears Meat & Co has been around a few years, but I think some complacency has set in. Very disappointed--please rectify the sandwich quality/ingredient situation and I will gladly retry and edit my review! Just a side-note suggestion/thought: Meat & Co take a look at Cochon Butcher in New Orleans. It's a very similar sandwich concept (which does benefit from in-house meats), but execution, sandwich innovation, and ambience are exceptional and something to learn from! read more

The sandwiches at Meat & Co. are all simultaneously a departure from the norm and familiar. At present I have sampled the Rick Reuben, The Opposition, Steak & Cheese, and two of the specials (an iberico ham and pineapple sandwich as well as an out of this world meatloaf sandwich). These guys all pack the flavor and provide a decent meal. Unfortunately I still gotta knock them down a peg as a few of the sandwiches have come with bone dry meat (a cardinal sin!). Even still the food is not to be missed. When these folks are on, which is more often than not, they are really on. I still have fevered dreams about that delicious meatloaf special... On top of the unique menu the space is also great. Bar seating and a friendly staff make for a nice lunch if you have the time to sit. The staff get major points in my book for enthusiasm which goes a long way for me. If you're excited about the food you're serving, so am I. I have to make a specific note about their monday special which nets you a sandwich, soup, chips, and a drink for $10 (about the cost of a sandwich normally). This is a fantastic deal and should really get you in the door if you're on the fence about checking the place out. On the whole Meat & Co. manages to find its own space among an already crowded sandwich market. John Ginnetti is already a well known staple in the restaurant industry here in New Haven and for those who frequent his mixology spot 116 Crown, you know this guy has a passion for what he does for a living. And that passion definitely shines through at Meat & Co, his newest sandwich shop creation where his innovative and creative ability is now applied to the simple concept of sammich making. The space is small and only has one panini press, but he's gone out of his way to permanently section off the parking spaces outside this spot to provide some al fresco dining for those looking to enjoy their gourmet sandwich in the urban jungle that is downtown New Haven. There is also some bar seating inside, but while the weather is warm enough I highly recommend you snag a seat under one of the red Campari umbrellas and take your time to savor every bite of your flavorful and delicious sandwich. For my first visit I got the PLT, their take on a BLT where the pig product is not bacon, but a house made porchetta. Garnished with arugula, tomato confit and paprika aoili on an artisan roll, this is pretty much the opposite of your ordinary $5 Boar's head deli sandwich. What makes this sandwich special and justifies the $10 price tag is the meticulous care and high quality that goes into every single ingredient in every single sandwich. The theme here is local and fresh, so the arugula probably comes from their rooftop garden and the tomato confit is made fresh from only the highest, freshest local ingredients. The paprika aoili is hand made and even the bread is of high quality and locally sourced and not the type of mass produced roll you find with pretty much every sandwich you get. They grill the meats on the panini press, while hand assembling each sandwich to order, and then grill the completed masterpiece to create a nice crispy outer edge. You're not going to get a gluttonous, overstuffed Jewish deli sandwich here, but what you will get is an epicurean gourmet sandwich that you will compare all other sandwiches to. Along the lines of their nothing-but-the-best theme here, even the sodas they serve are special. All served in traditional glass bottles, even the Coke is of the variety that is made with real sugar instead of the fake high fructose corn syrup. I am torn. On one hand, I love the name, concept, and attention to detail. I'm fond of the always clever, occasionally hilarious names for the sandwiches, but then again, do I really want to tell you to bring $10+ to a sandwich joint? Here's the good news: everything in your sandwich will be handmade or locally sourced, bread included. You will be happy eating this locally sourced sandwich because it's melty and unique and if you're smart like me you'll order the thing that sounds the coolest. The "God Forbid" is a roast beef, liverwurst, balsamic red onion, etc. honker that definitely had me smiling on my solo date and drawing sympathetic looks from couples. Go away, couples. I'm on a date, too, with my tummy. Here's the bad news: for three of these sandwiches, you could've bought yourself a panini press and slabbed on the ingredients yourself. Aioli makes most everything taste "artisan," and the grill marks will be there, too. The staff here is still figuring out their jive and my sandwich took a suspiciously long time to make. Exotic meats on the street (sort of). I am proud to say that I have happily devoured every sandwich on the menu (except the veggie one) and every damn one of them has been excellent. Meat & Co. is well trodden review territory, I don't have much to add that's new other than my humble opinion: if you love the art of the sandwich and you find that you couldn't bear to live in a meatless world, then you will, in all likelihood, fall in love with meat & co. Sandwich after sandwich, meat & co has produced meaty perfection. I don't care what Alex S. says (hi Alex) I have never experienced anything other than choice, succulent cuts of meat in one of these sandwiches. Over the top prose aside, there are some things you should know about Meat & Co. 1. Seating is limited. 2. Most (almost all) sandwiches contain meat (go figure). 3. They close early on most weekdays but make up for it by staying open later on Fri-Sat. 4. If you aren't up for a sandwich then find a different place to eat. 5. I'm a huge fan of 116 Crown's food and drink, so I had to naturally try this immediately. Been there 3 times so far, and am satisfied, though not fully impressed. The space is a great design. Minimalist and tasteful. It's a bit hipster, and would fit right in at Portland or Williamsburg. The sandwiches are great from an ingredient combination standpoint. The names are clever and creative. The drink selection is small, but high quality. Areas of improvement? Speed, for one. For the demand, I really think they could stand to have at least one more press. Every time I've gone here, I've had to feed the meter. I guess I need to invest more in parking. The other area is just overall QC and portion. One time, my sandwich spent too much time in the press and the bread was over-toasted and the contents very dry. Also, for the price spent, please abide by the venue name. The contents of all my sandwiches were great, but utterly skimpy for the prices paid. I think to all the great area deli's and sandwich shops that are much more generous for less money (Zoi's) and I find it hard to go here regularly.
