    El Guapo Sub

I placed my order online, and it was ready for me by the time I got there. I went with the El Guapo. It was phenomenal! I also ordered a side of fries with Cajun seasoning, also very good. I'm not a huge fan of french fries, but I enjoyed them a great deal and finished them. It's a small establishment, but there are some outside tables and ample street parking. I was greeted immediately. The gentleman behind the counter was very personable. The El Guapo was absolutely amazing. The creamy Gouda cheese mixed with the aïoli paired perfectly. The Frito accents on top of the sandwich added a nice texture and crunch. I ordered mine without lettuce, personal preference. The caramelized onions melted into the sandwich along with the cheese. The steak was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. I actually had to go back to the menu to see if it had bacon on it because parts of the steak had crispy edges but in a good way. The sandwich was so good. I was almost tempted to go back today, but this is a food that I'm going to have to enjoy sporadically because it's easy to overindulge. This was my first time trying Munchies and it's far from my last.

I've tried a lot of places, and honestly, this spot has the best steak and cheese I've ever had. Nothing else even comes close. You can taste the effort and pride they put into their food like every bite is on point. And shoutout to the cook... she knows exactly how to fire up that grill and deliver food cooked to perfection.

I'm a big fan of Food Best Of Lists, which is kind of ironic, because I don't really believe you can reasonably call some food the best. There are far too many places to try, and even your one visit to a place, may be unreliable for a variety of reasons. So I tend to talk about my favorite places, or places that you need to try before you can declare a best at something. After trying Munchies for the first time this weekend, I can say that the Munchies' El Guapo steak and cheese sub, is one of my favorite sandwiches from the past few years, and that you need to visit Munchies, before you can declare a Best CT Place for Cheesesteaks. Munchies is a small sub shop on State Street in New Haven that has no inside eating. Their focus seems to be on steak (and steak substitutes) and cheese subs, and Southern Fried Chicken sub varieties, but they also have specials. In warm weather, you can sit outside at one of a few tables. Otherwise, you're getting takeout. The owner Drew was working the grill when I was there. He was a personable guy who obviously cares about creating great food and great food in general. Meeting Drew definitely added to the experience. The El Guapo has steak, cheese, Gouda dip, cherry pepper aioli, caramelized onions and chili Frito's. It was exceptional. A great mix of flavors and textures. The steak was high quality and well cooked. The sub roll was excellent. Plenty of steak and toppings. One of my fav steak and cheeses in CT, and one of my fav CT sandwiches in recent years. I plan to return to Munchies to explore more of the menu. Five Stars

These are gentrified sandwich's that are so delicious. If they have a special try it because it's probably amazing. I've tried most of their menu and the El Guapo and Chuck Norris are my favs. The smashed crispy potatoes are so so good when they're fresh. It's pricy but worth it.

This place is small, unapologetic, and full of character. Decorative firewood stacked with intention, walls filled with wine corks, and #10 tomato cans repurposed as pizza stands. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot. Excellent pizza. Super friendly staff

One 6 Three is an unusual name - it's a small and cozy spot with few tables and bar seating, set in a residential neighborhood. We tried the gluten free crust (available only in 12") American margherita pie and added mushrooms in half of it. The wood fired crust was well done, I really liked it. Lots of garlic, yum. However, the tomatoes on it were raw and that didn't feel very good. Also, there were no condiments offered on the side- like oregano- is that normal in a pizza place? Maybe I need to try more pizza places :)

If you…read morenotice the sign, you'll see they've rotated the lower case "a" in "Meat" so it's upside down. Think of it as a culinary warning that they don't do things the normal way. I've had two sandwiches from Meat and Co. on two separate visits in 2025. The first was the Haute Tuna Melt. The tuna salad itself was good. It has some hot pepper and chive flavor. The tuna sandwich was on a panini-pressed ciabatta roll. I prefer some type of grilled sliced bread, which I think is more common, for a tuna melt. But that's fine. The biggest miss for me was the cheese. The American Cheese was not at all melted. So it's really just a tuna fish sandwich with American Cheese, Lettuce and Tomato. Good for what it was, but it wasn't a Tuna Melt. The second was The Rick Reuben. It must be more "Rick" than "Reuben". because it is the least "Reuben" Reuben sandwich I've ever had. It had pastrami, which is acceptable for a Reuben. That was about it. Instead of kraut, they had a mild red cabbage slaw. Instead of Swiss, they had cheddar. Instead of grilled rye bread, it was on a long panini-pressed pretzel roll. Admittedly, I didn't pay careful attention to the menu description because Reubens usually fall into one of a small number of types, and I like them all. Although, the online menu I saw did not reference the pretzel roll. This sandwich was too far away from any accepted form of Reuben to be called a Reuben. If it had been called a Pretzel Pastrami Melt, which is far more accurate, I wouldn't have ordered it. It was fine for it was. The pastrami was average though. Given how much I like the other East Rock Market vendors, I'm unlikely to return. If you go, pay close attention to the menu and maybe ask questions. 3.25 Stars
