I placed my order online, and it was ready for me by the time I got there. I went with the El Guapo. It was phenomenal! I also ordered a side of fries with Cajun seasoning, also very good. I'm not a huge fan of french fries, but I enjoyed them a great deal and finished them. It's a small establishment, but there are some outside tables and ample street parking. I was greeted immediately. The gentleman behind the counter was very personable. The El Guapo was absolutely amazing. The creamy Gouda cheese mixed with the aïoli paired perfectly. The Frito accents on top of the sandwich added a nice texture and crunch. I ordered mine without lettuce, personal preference. The caramelized onions melted into the sandwich along with the cheese. The steak was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. I actually had to go back to the menu to see if it had bacon on it because parts of the steak had crispy edges but in a good way. The sandwich was so good. I was almost tempted to go back today, but this is a food that I'm going to have to enjoy sporadically because it's easy to overindulge. I'm a big fan of Food Best Of Lists, which is kind of ironic, because I don't really believe you can reasonably call some food the best. There are far too many places to try, and even your one visit to a place, may be unreliable for a variety of reasons. So I tend to talk about my favorite places, or places that you need to try before you can declare a best at something. After trying Munchies for the first time this weekend, I can say that the Munchies' El Guapo steak and cheese sub, is one of my favorite sandwiches from the past few years, and that you need to visit Munchies, before you can declare a Best CT Place for Cheesesteaks. Munchies is a small sub shop on State Street in New Haven that has no inside eating. Their focus seems to be on steak (and steak substitutes) and cheese subs, and Southern Fried Chicken sub varieties, but they also have specials. In warm weather, you can sit outside at one of a few tables. Otherwise, you're getting takeout. The owner Drew was working the grill when I was there. He was a personable guy who obviously cares about creating great food and great food in general. Meeting Drew definitely added to the experience. The El Guapo has steak, cheese, Gouda dip, cherry pepper aioli, caramelized onions and chili Frito's. It was exceptional. A great mix of flavors and textures. The steak was high quality and well cooked. The sub roll was excellent. Plenty of steak and toppings. One of my fav steak and cheeses in CT, and one of my fav CT sandwiches in recent years. These are gentrified sandwich's that are so delicious. If they have a special try it because it's probably amazing. I've tried most of their menu and the El Guapo and Chuck Norris are my favs. The smashed crispy potatoes are so so good when they're fresh. It's pricy but worth it. read more

I ordered the jerk chicken sandwich and caveman fries. The fries were pipping hot and crunchy. The sandwich is fresh and hot as well. I had to wait an additional 30 mins for the food to be ready. The issue was there was no jerk flavor in the sandwich what so ever. I kept getting a strong ketchup test. The food was tasty. It's just not the flavor it is supposed to be. I may go back to try a different sandwich but skip the jerk chicken one. read more

This place takes you to Flavortown! Not the cheapest, nor the fastest, but the best. Limited but unique menu that they execute extremely well. My fav is the Jerk Chicken Chopped Cheese. It's a fantastic lunch or dinner treat. Super walkable/ bikeable from East Rock neighborhood. Was in and out of New Haven area for nearly a year & lucked out seeing this sandwich shop featured on Guy Fieri's "Best Bite in Town" show. This was no lie. I tried three of the steak sandwiches and two of the chicken Philly style sandwiches. The only one I didn't try was the chopped beef. All were great. Note that a third of one of these sandwiches will fill you up. They were almost the size of my forearm. Also had friends come along & we unanimously felt these were as good as sandwiches get. I rarely get drinks when ordering food because they're nothing special and kind of a rip. But don't miss Ralph & Charlie's options, especially one with cucumber. Had never seen these before nor since. Do not miss out on the fries, especially with the cheese sauce-I'd be happy with those alone. Finally, I always get the birthday cake for later-it is called Munchies after all. Ambience? No indoor seating. There is a picnic table ( I'd eat there even in snow) and I've also seen people eating while parked in their cars. Every time I'd been there it's a two person operation, so call in advance if you're in a hurry. Everything is made to order & that guy is a perfectionist. I absolutely recommend this place and it makes me wish I lived in that area, though I'd probably cook a lot less frequently. read more

This is probably one of my top 5 places in New Haven. There's no dine-in - it's more of a pick up location, but if you really can't wait to eat your food, there's a table outside. There's a parking lot across the street, but I usually just walk here. Food is always solid and it's hard to go wrong with any of the subs. Yes, the prices are a bit steep for a sandwich (and for New Haven), but the portions are massive and they are really, really good. I still have dreams about the apple slaw in the Chick Norris (which is a crowd favorite, according to the owner). One of the things that I like about this place is that the sandwich combinations are very creative - you definitely can't get these flavors at a different sandwich shop. In addition to the standard menu, he usually has two "special" subs that rotates (not sure if it rotates daily or weekly) and offers different desserts. I tried the cosmic brownie, which was surprisingly very good. The fries are also solid here too - we typically get the cheese fries, but the regular fries are also great (dusted with cajun seasoning). The wait is never long either - we typically get our food within 10-15 minutes and the owner is the nicest guy ever. So far, my boyfriend and I tried three of the sandwiches, but we're looking forward to trying the entire menu in the future. read more

We planned our day off around stopping here. We ordered the Chopped Cheese & Classic Chicken. Both grinders were huge, packed with meat, not just toppings. The Southern Fried chicken in the Classic Chicken is phenomenal. Alot of shops use frozen chicken strips, but not here. This place is a hidden gem. It was an extra 20 minutes and I was told the reason it was delayed was because they walk in traffic and telephone orders. Man oh man, I really enjoyed my chopped cheese sandwich. First thing, this is a very descent sized sandwich. The meat was welled seasoned and the bread was toasted. I was able to place my order right before the lunchtime rush and it appears this establishment could use another person on the grill. However, I didn't wait long to receive my order. This was the only specialty sandwich I've ever had here and I will most certainly be back to try another. My tip for anyone thinking about ordering is to checkout the restaurant's Instagram account before they appear to sellout out of food and/or be closed at various times. BUT we went to pick up takeout (on a busy state street with no parking), food was ready when promised on the order online feature and it was still warm when we got it home. I got the chick norris sub which was made with fried chicken tenders and slaw and my boyfriend got the steak and cheese sub with hot cherry pepper aioli, it also had chili cheese Fritos on it. We both liked our subs a lot! I had leftovers bc the sub was so long. Such an interesting menu and the subs are very original. Tons of diff sauces. I also loved the sub bread which is so important. I read about Munchies in an article in the Daily Nutmeg. It sounded cool but the hook was from a bit of history. The owner cooked as Gastronomique, an awesome, hidden, in the know only, take out place on High Street from back in the day. If Munchies had even similar quality, it would be a treat - and it was! After much debate I ordered a Canadian Tux - a truffled cheesesteak sandwich, shoestring fries and a Foxon Park lemon line - to eat outside. Three words: Explosion of Flavor. The Truffle flavor imbued the perfectly cooked meat in which the white american cheese has softened to just before liquid. The carmelized onions and honey bacon jam gave this awesome sweet flavor. I was in heaven. And the roll was perfect too! The fries were perfectly cooked. I didn't take it back home, I ate on the single picnic bench outside. To be clear, the truffle flavor is strong and was perfect for me, YMMV. I need to work my way through the rest of the menu. Next stop: El Guapo - steak and cheese with cherry pepper aioli, caramelized onions, smoked gouda dip and chili fritos. I strongly encourage that you look at the menu. So I actually discovered Munchies on UBER Eats - loved the cheese steak I got so I decided to go check the place out (it's about 4-5 minutes from my apartment!). It's definitely a take out spot - it's very small but it's situated right behind a sort of courtyard with a few outdoor picnic tables on a fun part of State Street. It's very much like a food truck actually - I was happy I stopped in and chatted with who I'm guessing is the owner - they have an epic rewards program and the food is just phenomenal! I have some family in south Jersey so I'm not stranger to authentic Philly steaks - I have to say, Munchies is servin up the best cheese steaks I have, personally, had the pleasure of eating outside of Philadelphia. I am thoroughly impressed. First off, this is one of those hole in the wall places that you are lucky to hear about. Pretty much take out/sidewalk dining only. But don't let that dissuade you from trying this place out. The gentleman working there was friendly, and very willing to accommodate any changes. The menu has some interesting combinations, I'll admit a few I might have been apprehensive about trying. But after trying a few sandwiches and some of the bacon cheese fries, I'll trust them I'm knowing their stuff. Flavors were fantastic and the ingredients were very well sourced based on the flavor and texture of it all. Stopped in for lunch today, my second visit: Munchies rocks! I had the Woke AF, honestly the second half was even better for dinner. The sub is a beautiful plant lunch on a day you are craving a big meaty sub but want to walk the walk. I agree with another reviewer that it was a little strong on the sour, but I had the second half for dinner and the flavors were perfectly blended by then. Somehow the fantastic grinder roll wasn't soggy. Last week I had the Canadian Tux and it was incredible, a flavor bomb of a sub. I'll order anything that says truffle and yes it had good truffle flavor but the cherry on top was the bacon jam which added a sweetness to the sandwich that had me remembering it days later. I gave it a week and went back. This menu has me thinking when I'll go back and what I'll have next. It makes you want to keep ticking some boxes off, there is an addictive nature to this place. The service is great, they're not bored talking to you about the subs, they are there to meet your cravings and they show it in their friendliness. They are fast and it's totally Covid safe. I love that really only one person or couple can fit inside at a time, you are the only one in there in front of the plexiglass so you won't be nervous about people crowding around you. Benches in the courtyard outside make a convenient place to wait or have lunch, or you can do as I did and take your sub to nearby Edgerton Park if it's a nice day. read more

tl;dr: The fries are fine, the Woke AF was way too sour and the filling made my the sandwich fall apart, which is shame, because the bread was delicious. I don't recommend the Woke AF, but would probably try to Veganize a standard sandwich to see. This spot sits where Latin Roots used to be (I legit never knew if that place was open). Munchies is much busier! It is quite literally standing room only, and strictly take out. They churn out sandwiches like madmen and they seem really busy. They were nice to me and attentive. It was weird to pronounce the woke af in person, but about 5 minutes later I had my sandwich. Once I got home I was greeted with a lovely grinder that was housing a filling literally oozing with vegan nacho sauce. It made the bottom of the grinder soggy after a while. The veganization of a Philly cheesesteak was enough, but then they added pickles and fritos and made it way too sour. This is something I would have thought would be delicious after a late night out or under the influence of certain substances (you know the ones) but for dinner it was too much for me. The fries are a healthy portion (7 oz for $4.50). They are thinner than standard shoestrings but they were fine. I read on their IG that you can make any sandwich vegetarian by subbing it with seitan. The seitan itself isn't terrible but it's definitely on the spongier side. It seems house made (the sponginess reminds me of seitan I have made in the past), but I did peep the Duncan Hines frosting next to the sprinkles for their birthday cake. Their menu has the vegan symbol for anything that is vegan, and their IG features specials you may not find on the delivery apps. I'm also going to soapbox and say that if you want to really support small businesses during this time, please call them directly and avoid delivery apps, because 3rd party apps take 30% of the cut, and in this economy that is a travesty. That is the reason I walked in, and I got a solid feel for the place. All in all, it was alright. I would not go out of my way to eat here. read more
