It was a hot day, but after work the patio was out of the sun, so we opted for a table outside. The patio is cute. She definitely knew what she was talking about and was able to tell us if something was going to be super sweet, and which drinks were more popular. Also, after she seated us and gave us the menu she gave us a few minutes and came back with waters and little samples of lavender lemonade, which was really good! I ordered the rosemary gin fizz, and my friend ordered one of the zero proof mocktails. She was warned it would be sweet, and she said it was definitely sweet for her taste. I was told my gin fizz was a little sweet as well, but I didn't find it to be overly sweet. I thought it was really nicely balanced, and wasn't excessive on any of the individual flavors. MDRD is the kind of place that makes a statement from the moment you walk in. High above Grand Rapids on the 27th floor of the Amway Grand Plaza, the restaurant's modern design and panoramic views set the tone. It feels like dining in a modern spot in New York or Downtown LA, but with the kind of warmth and authenticity that keeps it grounded. The branding of MDRD alone--bold, clean, and contemporary--caught my eye, and the experience more than delivered. The food isn't just about technique; it's about flavor. Each dish is carefully constructed, yet approachable, taking classic Spanish elements and giving them a modern twist. The Iberico pork belly was rich and tender, with a deep glaze that had just the right amount of sweetness to complement the smoky apple and bright citrus foam. It felt indulgent but balanced, not heavy. The Ora King salmon crudo was refreshing, with the delicate fish enhanced by the light acidity of preserved lemon and the crispness of pickled kohlrabi. It's the kind of dish that makes you pause and savor every bite. The croquetas de jamón were like the best comfort food you've ever had: crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, with the nutty tang of manchego cheese adding depth. Meanwhile, the pulpo a la gallega was a standout--perfectly grilled octopus with a smoky, charred flavor that paired beautifully with the smooth potatoes and the subtle brininess of squid ink vinaigrette. The patatas bravas, with the addition of caviar, turned a simple dish into something decadent without feeling over the top. What really sets MDRD apart is the overall experience. The service is attentive without being overbearing, the atmosphere is stylish but never stuffy, and the food hits that sweet spot between innovative and familiar. It's the kind of place you leave already planning your next visit. MDRD confidently puts Grand Rapids on the map for modern fine dining. It's not just a restaurant--it's a destination. If you're looking for a place that can rival anything on the Las Vegas Strip or in Los Angeles, this is it. read more

On a recent visit to MDRD to commemorate a significant career milestone, my previous perceptions of the establishment underwent a profound transformation. The meticulous attention to detail in both presentation and the elucidation of dishes was commendable. A minor misadventure led us astray, but the ever-attentive hostess, Amore, swiftly intervened, guiding us to the correct floor. Emily further elevated our experience by courteously inquiring about the nature of our visit, adding a personal touch. Our server, Sheryl, showcased an extensive knowledge of the menu. Her recommendations were not just apt but enlightening, as she delved deep into the ingredients, ensuring we fully appreciated the culinary journey ahead. Each dish was a testament to MDRD's culinary prowess, with the salmon appetizer particularly evoking the finesse of Michelin-starred establishments. The freshness of every ingredient was palpable. The fish, a testament to their culinary skill, was cooked to perfection. Efficiency was evident in the promptness of service, reminiscent of a seamless ensemble where each member played a pivotal role. In conclusion, MDRD wasn't merely a dining experience; it was a celebration in itself. I am genuinely looking forward to our next visit, and wholeheartedly extend my gratitude for the exceptional service rendered. read more

Cafe Mamo is truly one of the most special restaurants in Grand Rapids…read more A small, local, farm-to-table bistro with a weekly rotating menu run by a husband and wife? Am I in Grand Rapids or Europe?? The premise alone is enough to get people in the door, but the execution is what will make customers return time after time. The ambiance is perfect. Feels like a cross between your grandma's cottage, a cozy breakfast nook, and a Michelin star restaurant. The staff was lovely and attentive. You can tell that they put their heart and soul into curating a five star experience for their guests. And the food? Great. Not blow-your-hair-back, but it was great. We started with the shishito peppers, hit with a quick sauté and some parm and aioli. They were really just peppers, fresh and delicious in their own right but nothing spectacular. Our entrees were the pork ribs and the (some type of pasta filled with cheese whose name alludes me). The ribs were good, but the flavors were foreign to me. Black olives and ribs is a new combo, and while it wasn't for me, it was still great to try a new thing. The pasta was the star of the show, it felt like that scene in Ratatoullie when Anton Ego eats the ratatoullie and is transported back to his childhood. The ice cream was BOMB. House made cantaloupe ice cream?? I'm not a dessert guy and this knocked my socks off. I'd go again just for this. And the cocktails were lovely as well. I got a martini with olive oil, which was literally vodka with three drops of olive oil and some Maldon salt. Simple yet perfectly executed. My fiancée got a sort of gimlet which was also superb. Overall, Cafe Mamo reminded me that dining at an establishment is an experience, and that experience is influenced by more than the food. The service, atmosphere, cocktails and desserts were all truly top notch. While the food was a bit of a miss for me, I respect the rotating menu and the fact that even the best artists can't produce straight bangers 100% of the time. I will certainly be returning to this establishment, as I am in full support of everything that this place stands for and will vote with my dollar every chance I get!
