Hands down the best food and drinks in downtown GR. The atmosphere is elegant and the waiters are extremely knowledgeable. Tip, try to get a reservation during sunset, it's worth it. But on the pricey side, with entrees between 40-80$, or more. read more

We went here for a Saturday night date night and were very pleasantly surprised by how outstanding the food was. Parking is easy enough at the Amway Grand ramp parking across the street (50% validation is provided by MDRD). The entrance is odd - what seems like a private elevator from the lobby area (complete with host station) actually stops on all the hotel floors and host guests may jump on and off during the ride. Anyway, after a short elevator ride up to the 27th floor you're greeted by staff and shown to the table. Some truly great views out over the Grand River and surrounding area. It was derby day and they had Mint Julip's as a special drink on the menu - one of the best I've ever tried. As for the food, it was fantastic - just outstanding. We had 5 or 6 tapas plates (Patatas Bravas and the Lamb Chops being the ones that stick out the most to me) and all of them were fantastic. And the portion sizes are huge! $11 for a huge plate of Patatas and $18 for 4 lamb chops is ridiculously cheap. We would have been full from the first 3 tapas but we wanted to try a bunch of things so ended up ordering *way to much food*. We also shared the Pollo Asado entree after all of the tapas, which was also amazing. The skin was so crispy, it had a huge crunch when eating it. Desserts were works of art - beautiful to look at, but when compared to the rest of the meal they were somewhat disappointing. They were by no means bad - but I'd probably skip dessert next time and instead get more Patatas. Overall, this is now one of my favorite restaurants in GR. Looking forward to going again. read more

What an amazing experience, a wonderful tribute to the tapas style of dining with incredible food, drinks and desserts that defy description but I will certainly try my best. The mini confectionary masterpieces are best described as the perfect end to an amazing dining experience. I will attempt to describe "El Limon" a dessert that mirrors its name, it is an intricately crafted white chocolate mousse enrobed in a white chocolate shell that rests carefully on a bed of toasted merengue and lime caviar in the shape of small tapioca balls. The flavor is unique and reminds me of summer and beautiful Spanish sunset. Next up is the piece de resistance the "Arbol de Caramelo" a very unique dessert that is unbelievably beautiful. A chocolate tree that is topped with a pink canopy of hand spun sugar and real edible flowers. The entire tree is "rooted" on a dark chocolate soufflé and surrounded by red petals of freeze dried strawberries that mimic petals falling from the tree. The entire dessert is amazing to look at and just as enjoyable to devour with friends. An amazing dining experience that should not be missed. A special shout-out to the master mixologist Jeremy for his incredible descriptions and impeccable service. Provecho! read more

We came here for our anniversary. We made reservations for 8:45pm but checked in at 7 and they had a table ready so they were able to seat us early. The ambiance here is amazing! You are on the top floor of the amway and you have full views of the city. It's pretty dimly lit for a romantic ambiance with several booths or tables by the windows. We knew coming in we were going to order more food than we could eat but so many things looked good and we wanted to try it all. You start off with complimentary olives that are marinated in and oil and they are pretty awesome if you like olives. We also got some of their cocktails which were amazing. The lamb chops were so tender and had a great flavor. The patatas bravas were cubes so they were so crispy and crunchy but also with a soft potato center. The shrimp in garlic sauce was my favorite thing there. So salty and garlicky and tender. Their paella was a miss for me. My husband really liked it but the shrimp was pretty flavorless, the chicken was super tender but also lacked flavor, the sausage was very salty and the overall flavor to me was just very bland. That being said, I LOVE paella so maybe I'm too critical. My husband did enjoy it. For dessert we got the raspberry sorbet and dark chocolate with cake out in a beautiful design! The "food show" here is amazing! All their food comes out perfectly plated and gorgeous. You also get complimentary chocolates with your bill. For sure will be back. This place was unlike all others in GR for the view alone. read more

We were lucky to snag a seat at the bar on our last night in Grand Rapids, and next time we're in town we'll be sure to make a reservation so we can dine here again. MDRD is a top-notch experience with delicious drinks, unique and flavorful dishes, and a gorgeous atmosphere. We were seated at the end of the bar where Justin was busily slinging cocktails all night long, and it was so fun to watch him work. My husband and I love making cocktails at home and we enjoyed chatting him up about food, drinks and travels throughout the evening. Justin also took excellent care of us with top level service and incredible drinks - we enjoyed several and all were boozy, well balanced and delicious. The tapas portions are far bigger than what we're used to! The octopus dish felt like a full entree potion. We ordered six tapas, and not a single one disappointed. Several reviews here said that the food was just "ordinary", and I couldn't disagree more. The flavors were complex, unique, and unexpected (and we've dined at many excellent tapas restaurants nationwide). My favorites were the beef tartare and the cold soup dish, but truly everything was impeccable. Sad that we were so full we had to leave some food on the plates! For dessert apparently we weren't THAT full), we split the Limon and even though we were stuffed, I probably would have happily eaten one all on my own. Light and refreshing and perfect. Lastly, I appreciate that gluten-free options were clearly labeled and that they offered two gluten free desserts (that weren't just ice cream). At the end of the meal, we were given two lovely chocolates and glasses of sherry to finish the meal. By far, MDRD was our favorite experience in Grand Rapids and is a must-visit for an excellent meal in the downtown area! read more

Overpriced, pretentious food with horrible service for the price. Waiting 10-15 minutes to even get water, was told first round of drinks would be comped due to delay and was not. I can't speak of the food I went in later at night on a whim and the hostess managed to squeeze us in the last few seats in the house at the bar. Bartender was nice, drink menu was interesting and I had a few cocktails I enjoyed. Mainly the 5 stars for atmosphere and view. It's so pretty and the hostess encouraged us to check out the big windows to really see the city. Cool spot I highly recommend. read more

This is a expensive place..as such you expect 5 stars on every aspect..Saturday we went to celebrate a birthday..we were placed in a row of tables across from the bar...they have tables jammed in here..our waiter was excellent however the table next to ours had a waiter that constantly got in between the tables...the close tables put his butt 2 inches from my food...then he painfully described the entire menu with me not able to eat due his butt basically right next to my food...didn't eat my dinner and tbh was kinda grossed out..it is still a nice place but DO NOT ACCEPT a table in that crappy row...to the management??? take out a table asap read more

Went to MDRD for a birthday celebration and it was absolutely amazing. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, exceptional service, and amazing food & drink, MDRD is for you! We had so much fun and I will definitely be coming back soon. Loved every minute of my experience here. It's on the 27th floor, so the view is great. The menu has options for everyone (had someone gluten free, dairy free, and vegetarian) and the drinks were incredible. The best part was certainly the dessert! Thank you, I'll be back! read more

Everything about this place is over-rated. The cuisine is NOT Spanish, but rather Spanish "inspired", meaning that it is largely regular Midwestern food made with some Spanish ingredients. The atmosphere: Being on the 27th floor, you would expect things to center around the view. But unless you are sitting next to the dirty windows, there isn't one. Whoever designed this place completely blocked the view of the outside from 98% of the interior. Mainly with the bar, which is ultimately what MDRD is...a bar. There are some tables to sit down to dinner, and some bird perch looking things where they hang people up like art on the wall to eat and drink, but the bulk of the entire space is taken up by the bar, which sits directly in front of most of the windows. The clientele appears to be gullible people like myself, middle aged businessmen, and high dollar hookers. read more

Love this newer upscale restaurant in Grand Rapids!! I went here with a girlfriend to catch up after not seeing each other for a while... and it was such a lovely get together! Here are some of the main things I'd like to say... -You NEED to make reservations in advance! We ate here early on a weekday, and we had to wait at least 3 weeks to get in. So, if you're trying to get a weekend reservation... be prepared to wait a little while! You can make a reservation on Open Table. -The interior design concept is STUNNING. I love the golds, emerald greens, and royal blues... honestly one of the most beautiful restaurants in Grand Rapids. And obviously... you can't forget about the amazing view! It's almost a 360 degree view of all of Grand Rapids! -The service was impeccable. Our server was so attentive without being TOO attentive. He was so kind and very helpful with the menu. I also thought it was a nice touch that each staff member there had matching shirts! I've never really seen that at a restaurant before. -The food... everything we ate was SO YUMMY. We started off with a tapas plate, the shrimp... and it was delightful! Loved the flavoring, and it was actually a good portion size. I had the chicken for my main course, and it was delicious! Again... very good sizing with the portion. And the best for last... DESSERT. Would highly recommend either the chocolate dessert or the lemon dessert. Not only are they fantastic tasting, but they are so aesthetically please. Both desserts were honestly pieces of art... you almost don't want to eat them! The chocolate dessert looks like a cherry blossom tree, and the lemon dessert looks like a legit lemon. SO COOL. -My only piece of advice? Add some complimentary bread service. For an upscale and higher priced restaurant... I 100% think this should be included. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion! :) read more

Stopped in for after dinner drinks and dessert and the desserts were out of this world! The presentation and plating were the best I've seen. You can tell they used quality ingredients and made these bad boys with love and care. While the menu price may seem steep it is totally worth it. We split these two amongst 4 people and all left satisfied. Drinks were average but the view of the sunset over GRs west side was worth the price of admission. read more

I'd definitely recommend making a reservation on open table a few weeks in advance for this lively, trendy place! It was PACKED with working professionals, and friends catching up over drinks! it's actually pronounced Madrid - and definitely has a Spanish twist to it. The modern colorful decor with brass accents is beautiful and perfect for photos. It can be difficult to find, but the hostess stand is located right next to the entrance for the Wolfgang puck restaurant in the new, west tower of the Amway hotel. We received excellent service on both occasions. The service was prompt, and our waitress and bartender were very knowledgeable. I also had the pleasure of speaking with the manager, Abigail, and she couldn't have been more gracious! The place was bustling but everything was running smoothly. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented. We loved the shrimp, the paella, cheeseboard, and many of the appetizers. For dessert, don't overlook "El Limon" which was a delicious mousse in the shape of a lemon! with a lemon marmalade. This is a great place to try some unique food, as it was a very adventurous experience. They have some of the best cocktails I've had in Grand Rapids. Plus, you cannot beat the view! So fun for special occasions. I'll be back! read more

Best meal I've had in Grand Rapids. twice. Phenomenal presentation, true attention is made to ever detail. Our server was wonderful!

This is one of those rare places who go an extra mile to satisfy their guests. Its a gem of GR! One day prior to my anniversary, I had reserved a table for two through open table and later had called them to request for a table with a view. They didn't have any available so I agreed to a high table. Well, upon reaching there, the hostess readily recognized me from my name and pleasantly surprised me saying she had actually arranged for a window table for us! And boy, it was directly facing the sun set! The place is nice and vibrant, decor is reasonably upscale and being at the 27th floor of the Amway Grand Plaza hotel, the panoramic views are terrific! As for the food, dont miss the incredible Pulpo a La Gallega... grilled octopus on a bed of squid ink. Their collection of cocktails and wines are quite good to go with their impressive offerings of tapas. As for the main course, we had ordered the Paella Mixta and it was pretty good too. The dessert "El Limon" was one of the highlights of our evening and was a piece of art to be honest! Its a white chocolate mousse shaped like a fresh lemon and tastes delicious! I'll definitely come back at the next opportunity and bring all the friends to whom I've been bragging about finding this place! Keep up the great work you guys! read more

Wow wow wow!! Can I rate this place 6/5 stars? Haha, in all seriousness though, I had an amazing experience here tonight. We made a reservation for two on opentable. Found the restaurant in the Amway hotel. You're greeted by the host downstairs and they lead you to the elevator to get to the 27th floor! Once you've reached that floor they already have the door open for you welcoming you into the restaurant. I'm pretty sure my mouth was wide open (under my mask) because I have never been in a restaurant so beautifully decorated. I couldn't even begin to tell you how epic the view was from up there on the 27th floor. You're going to just have to see for yourself :) Once the host seated us we found ourselves in a cute little booth with a view of the river and city. We were immediately helped by our amazing server for some water. Soon after she returned we ordered drinks and a bunch of tapas. I really liked the Salmón con trufa. Which was cold-smoked salmon, puff pastry, truffle, honey, and crema. Seriously such a delicious combination of flavors and textures. I'm still dreaming of that filling inside the puff pastry. My favorite dessert was the Árbol de caramelo! Which is a dark chocolate soufflé, strawberry sugar, and spun sugar. It was so pretty it was hard to break into and eat. But believe me it was incredible. One thing I also want to mention was how accommodating the staff was. Everyone was so helpful and polite. Our server was honestly so amazing and gave us some great advice on items to order :) I will recommend this place to anyone I know. Forever. I feel like this was one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Thank you Madrid. read more

Polite staff and stunning views of the city up top. Would recommend dressing up (smart casual?) when dining here, though it's not required. Enjoyed the personal touch the staff gave us with their anniversary wishes and a hand-written post card. As for the food, it was decent, though I expected a bit more for the class of this restaurant. The bramble drink was neat, especially with the singed rosemary pinned to the rim. The salad was served room temp; I think it would be better served cold. The salmon pastries were delectable, however. The petite steak was strong on flavor and the accompanying veggies were fine except for the sour tasting mushrooms. The paella was tasty and generous in portion though overcooked; the rice was crusted. The lemon dessert is structurally unique, but too tart for my personal taste. Overall, nice experience. read more

The four of us went to MDRD to celebrate two birthdays and a wedding anniversary (56 yrs.!) The ambiance is impressive; an elegant setting with a bird's eye panoramic view of downtown GR. There isn't a bad table in the house. The well-trained waitstaff is very attentive, but not obtrusive. We sampled some Tapas: croquettes, grilled octopus and tortillas, with the latter our favorite, and an honorable mention for the pulpo. We then decided to share the larger Paella Mixta. At $94.00, our expectations were high. The dish (pan) arrived with a split lobster (minus the tail) on a bed of rice. One expends a lot of energy grappling with the lobster shells with little reward for one's efforts. We were underwhelmed with both the portion size of the Paella and the flavor. Looking back, we all would have preferred more mixture in the "mixta". Adding a few clams, one or two prawns, some more chicken and chorizo would certainly upgrade this dish. After scraping the paella pan clean, I was reminded of an old Peggy Lee song from years ago: "Is That All There Is" ? Considering our hefty dinner tab, I was hoping that management might proffer a celebratory, shareable dessert. No such luck. Not even a celebratory Cupcake ! read more

Let me start with wow, Madrid has definitely surpassed my expectations. Every food item that I order was well balanced and they didn't skimp out on the alcoholic beverages. Haha. Every dish that was served was so beautiful, almost too beautiful to eat. Our server, Marissa, was amazing! She was helpful and also gave us great recommendations (we loved all of them, btw). We were seated right by the window overlooking the Grand River, which was immaculate! I really liked the atmosphere, clean and chic. Music taste was also good. I did not feel like I was eating in Grand Rapids. Lol. I will most likely be returning for more tapas for sure! Chef's kiss* read more

We had a great meal here while in GR this summer. Staff was exceeding friendly and helpful. Props to whoever makes that happen. Overall, the mushroom soup, potato and scallop tapas and the chocolate tree dessert were amazing. Our main dishes (both fish options) were okay but not stellar. If I returned I would just get a bunch of the tapas instead. The view is great. I would try to time it with sunset next time because I be that looks awesome. The ambience is fantastic too. We went to Cygnus a loooong time ago, and this was probably a much needed revitalizing of this space. We'd love to go back! read more

I had waited a long time to check out MDRD. Was it worth the wait? Well, Sort of. The seating available was only in the cocktail lounge or the bar. After explaining I don't usually drink, they sat me on a couch with a small table and a light. I still needed a phone light to read the menu as it was extremely dark in that area. I asked for an iced tea and was told they didn't have any. I asked for a Diet Coke and was told they didn't have that either. I was shocked that there weren't any non-alcoholic offerings. Hesitatingly, I ordered a lemon drop, extra sweet with Tito's. It was fine but not extra sweet, more of a bitter. Next was the tortilla de MDRD. For the most part, this was good, however I don't understand the dabs of a mayonnaise-like substance on the sides and top. I removed it from the tortilla. Next course was the paella. This is the bad part. I was so hopeful that the heavens would open with this entree. The chorizo was literally burnt and the rice was so overdone, it stuck to the sides of the pan that it was served in. The burnt taste of the chorizo ruined the dish along with the multiple sprigs of herbs to cover the plate up--probably hoping that I wouldn't see the burnt entree. The dessert was delicious.....but was still bummed about the entree when I left. read more

My boyfriend and I came here for our two year anniversary last week. We were really excited to try this place after seeing lots of hype, so we made a reservation. First, the hostess was not very welcoming. It was not like the typical "welcome in!" vibe I'm used to at most places. We waited for about 10 minutes (we were a little bit early) before they suggested we sit at the bar while we waited. That was fine with me so we each ordered a drink. I really liked the bar tenders working and they made some fantastic drinks. I know it's probably hard to clean windows 27 stories up, but the windows were disgustingly dirty. The view was very nice though. We waited for 45 minutes after our reservation time before we got sat, which was pretty ridiculous. We waited for an hour at the bar to get sat with no one apologizing for the wait. We got a nice table though. They need to do some serious revamping on their servers. Ours was a nice girl, but I expected more professionalism from her. I thought she kept it much too casual, didn't tell us an specials, and didn't check up on us very often. The food was very good though. It was expensive but worth it. We got the black cod and the ribeye steak. Overall, the food was great, but I was not very impressed with the staff so I probably won't be back. You'd be better off going for a nice dinner at Leo's for probably half the price and much better service. read more

What a cool spot to try! The view is incredible and the drinks are crafty. Pricey small plates but definitely worth a try. The shrimp was out of this world. Could be a one and done for dinner but would definitely go back for drinks. read more

The new decor was really cool. They also provided a very safe and pleasant experience regarding their safety measures they put in place in regards to covid. The drinks were good and the food presentation was excellent. The only reason I knock it down to 4 stars is because some of the food left me wanting a little bit more in the taste department. The best dish I had was their COCHINILLO ASADO, but the PULPO A LA GALLEGA was a bit underwhelming. Overall though, a great experience and would absolutely go again in the future! read more

We always have a great experience here. Last night was especially on point. Our server Faith was incredible. Very attentive, and kind. Came here for a special night dinner. They draw a little hand drawn card celebrating with you and many of the tables had these. Started with a cocktail it was impeccable and very strong! The server was quite knowledgeable about the wine list. The food is Spanish, but not so much so that an American palate can't handle it - not every dish will include salted fish or olives etc. I do think this makes it a little bit more bland some times. Ordering the meat and cheese plate for example will lean more heavily on things that are more easily available in America. Still, very good! The presentation on all the dishes is very nice or unique. Agree with others who say the portions are fairly large. Our server suggested 3 tapas per person, but I think as a lady I was more of a 2 tapas. Most of all though I think you come here for the view of the sunset as you eat dinner which all the tables face. For optimal timing for this in the summer, especially in a weekend, you may need reservations timed a couple weeks in advance. read more
