My husband ordered the top sirloin med rare with a subtle chimichurri salsa flavor. I had the pork chop with a sauerkraut glaze; it was a bit spicy for me but delicious nonetheless. We love going to McPhee's when we visit the area, so we went back once again. I love the halibut, but when it's not in season they use salmon which I was really upset about - but I loved it just as much and the leftovers the next day cold were amazing!!! Had our Cal Poly grad dinner here. Easy reservation, plenty of spots. Walked in and the ambiance was welcoming. Good steakhouse menu. Our server was very friendly and efficient. Each table receives bread baskets with an assortment of pickled veggies; very good. We had the garlic bread and an heirloom tomato and burrata for starters. Had the porterhouse for 2, ribeye, the excellent double cut pork chop, and one salmon entree. Meat was cooked to order, well-seasoned with a nice char. Glasses were filled and plates cleared quickly. Another stand out were the mashed potatoes which were perfect. I got the porterhouse special which was $120 and came with au gratin potatoes and vegetables, very delicious! We had a big birthday dinner at McPhees and we were very impressed by the service. Our waitress was very friendly and everything was efficient. The ambiance of the restaurant is so nice. Low lights, quiet music, very relaxing. Because we called ahead to schedule our party, we had a nice private room tucked away from the rest of the restaurant. The food was overall good. The garlic feta dip starter was INCREDIBLE. I could've devoured all of it. I had duck for my main dish and it wasn't my favorite, but it was fine. We would definitely return! read more

New Years Eve dinner was excellent. Haven't been here for quite some time so we decide to treat ourselves to the best steakhouse in the Central Coast. It did not disappoint. The filet was cooked perfectly to a medium and the sauce was very flavorful. The bread was delicious but that ended up being a problem when I couldn't finish my steak. Had to take it home. McPhee's specializes in taste bud tingling wood-grilled steaks, seafood and other gourmet offerings. We ordered the Macadamia Nut and Panko Crusted King Salmon and their Aged Ribeye "Double R Ranch" as our entrées. The King salmon was delicate yet firm and flavorful. Expertly prepared, it was served with plain rice and Asian slaw. It has been a popular staple on the menu for years. Served with a large goat cheese & corn stuffed poblano chile, and jalapeño cheese mashed potatoes, the 14 oz. ribeye was served covered with 3 salsas. I was a bit disappointed as I ordered with the salsas on the side. Smothering the steak with acidity does not improve its flavor, it hinders it. This was our first time experiencing Mcphees. We had several friends recommend it for the quality and service. The food was good, but the service was very disappointing. Food items were forgotten and server was not very accommodating or attentive. After forgetting about us, she was very rude when I had to flag her down to come and assist us. Just a quick update. I almost gave McPhee's a four. I made reservations and I asked for a booth and we got that. But then we sat and no server etc. came by for 10+ minutes. So the hostess came by and my husband asked her who's our server. We found out somebody called in sick and I guess the information did not get passed down to the right people to cover us. So Leslie stepped in. She was excellent friendly got us water, bread and a relish tray. I asked for a taste of the Albarino and she brought it to me and it was very good so I got a glass. My husband got an 805 but it was different and he liked it. We both had the halibut as it just came back on the menu. It was a generous piece with some rice and slaw. We ordered food from a fund raiser for a local school. 4 dinners totaled $100. Picked up last week and 4 of us ate them. Conclusion. The tiny ribs had ok flavor but honestly I'll never buy baby back rubs again. They are just too tiny. I felt like I'm eating a tiny dogs ribs or something. The garlic bread had no garlic flavor, pieces of bread were flattened and tiny. The red cabbage salad had an awful bitter flavor that none of us could eat. The plain quartered sliced roasted potato . Had no seasoning and without butter or something it was like eating a plan baked potato Idk why they didn't include some good chile beans. But it wasn't part of the meal. Disappointing the second time around. We were staying in Templeton and wanted a nice dinner out, we had 7 people plus baby. We raved about this place to our friends... turned out it's just ok now. There's no more 750ml Austin Hope wine anymore... dang it. Only the magnum. So We got one of the recs from our server and turned out the wine was not good. Our bad, should have chosen our selves. Then we got the tempura shrimps to share. It was huge and tasty but not worth the $. I got a Caesar salad as well. For entrees I got the rack of NZ lamb, my husband got the ribs. His ribs were pretty cold and my lamb was warm at most. Nothing seemed to be hot. Even my other friend's dishes. I think maybe the party size was too big? There were multiple other large parties too. for years I wanted to try Mr Phees a thy had a solod name ... So last week I was in the area and invited a fried to dinner.,, For context I have been a professional trained Chef.. with some experience... and was looking for a classic simple country steak house in cattlle country. SThey They sat me by the kitchen, no matter, I used to cook.... Service was wonderful and the server was fery helpful. No complaints The meny was tather small and seemed to follow a westerm theme. More properly a south West theme. . As I read the menu it became apparent that almost everything was served with som sortf of chili... in it or saused with chilis. I tead like a Mexican restraunt might.... Wow, Glancing at the Kitchen I notice all the girller and line were hispanic. Fine by me. they are outstanding cooks. I selected a filet med rare, and asked that the horseradish demiglais be omitted ( demiglaise is a very smooth rich sauce bases on fine wine and many many reductions to taste buttery and rich....pare it wiht accidic horse raddish is a total oppsite).... like putting chili in your lemon merangue pie........) It just don't go.!!!!....What in Gods name were they thinking.... They substitites a Herbal sauce I thought on th side .. but they sauced it. The herbal was a mix of peppers and chili !! and quite Hot. Iscraped i off I wished I could have tried it .... first My nexr suprise was the meat.... I know good meat. They advertised Snake River Ranch. for oher stteaks ... which it the TOP meat sulpplier to the finest places Like Puck and Keller, frenchLaundry./ Per Se etc This was no Snake River beef It was done med... slightly fron Med rare... big deal but that what you get on a grill.. Not the end of my life. However the texture of the beef was almost non existant.. like eating a crab cake. it was grainy ! looked lije it had been needled a lot ( a techi cooks do wit a machine where hynderdes of needles literaly tear up and tissue making it ultra tender. Either that of they severely marinated in in acids for a very long time. Either way it has the texture of a hamburger, if that. Almost any flavor was wiped out buy the chili s used in either marinade or the herbal chili sauce. The filet was so modified either by tools or chemicals that it was the worst I have ever had.... and add the chili. I was very sad.... I would hate to think its was because of sub standard meat. ..... but in reality, one ot those 3 had to happen to my steak. and at $52 a pop? To my chagrin the potato cake. too... was soloaded with chilis too.... The only thing not spiced with chili was the veg. I did ny best to eatt it but could only finish a portion,,, and none off tthe side... Everything on the table has or had chili in some way OK, the culnary trend in the west is chili and hot spice.. I can dig it.. and I get that the kitchen staff is inclined to live hot spicy food. My only complainnt is that this cilli obsession to the whole menu is reall making Mc Phees be more of a" mexican restraunt with a wine list" and serves creme brule. If you crave american classic steak house or even Rancher style..... You wont be all that happy with a Mexican Steakhouse..... I hope they change because not everyone can eat highly spiced food.... It's been about 4-5 years since our last visit to McPhee's. I think we went once post-COVID, and to be honest, it didn't quite hit the mark that time--but we decided to give it another shot, and I'm glad we did. Coming from the LA area, I really appreciate the small-town charm and welcoming atmosphere they've got going here. It feels like a true family-owned steakhouse, and when we went in January, it felt like we were the only out-of-towners in the place. We ordered half a rack of ribs for the kiddo, and my wife and I shared the porterhouse. The ribs were solid, but the porterhouse? Incredible. I haven't had one that good in years--probably not since the last time we were here back in 2019. McPhee's easily ranks as one of the best steakhouses on the Central Coast. I wish I knew more about the history of the building, which this wonderful resto has now become. Our friendly server told us she only started working there for a few months but did share what she has heard through the grapevine. LOL! I won't share that here in my review, so you'll just have to go check this place out if you wanna know! ;)) We had a wonderful dining experience here! The bread service came out right away, and we enjoyed the plate of pickled veggies! Their portions are massive but most of all, delicious! Ordered the BB'Q Pork Baby-back Ribs, which was super tender and saucy...yum! The hubz and sis both ordered the American Prime Kobe Burger, which was juicy and overflowing with goodness! The special that night was a Bone-in NY Steak, which our buddy ordered and enjoyed (medium rare) and cooked perfectly (thanks, chef!). For dessert, the Key lime pie (special), June's famous crème brûlée, and Vanilla bean ice cream sundae surely did not disappoint! All in all, we left there with happy hearts and full bellies! But my sister and I weren't super hungry so the bus girl took our plates to box up to take home. Unfortunately, she never brought them back and when I asked they were gone. Huh??? We live in Paso but have wanted to venture out. I've never really seen what Templeton nearby offers, but I did an RSVP from the ratings of my fellow Yelpers, thanks y'all! Well, I'm really glad I listened/read. You would never know that going east of the freeway a few blocks is like a cute and charming western town filled with all kinds of eateries and small shops (bookmarked for the future trips). Perhaps, McPhee's Grill is Templeton's finest offering. With its own parking lot in the back and surrounding left and right sides, you walk inside and greeted with great hospitality. My party of 4 were seated right away in the backroom. All the space is really nice, but I really like this room. We treated ourselves to a bottle of Cab from Austin Hope 2022 ($72, 1 liter bottle), and it was perfection. The breadbasket had 4 types, and went well with our first glass. We all loved our food, but perhaps mine was the well- presented, the Double-cut Pork-Chop (ancho chile-apricot jam glazed) w/baby zucchini and amazing sweet potato fries ($39, 5.0 stars) -- HUGE, a spectacle. The tortilla soup had great flavors but was lite on the chunks of chicken. Wine list was weak given this is wine country. Service was good. Located in the heart of the Central CA wine country, this steak house has something to fulfill the pickiest of eaters. Everything from the breads, salads, steaks, and seafood are excellent, in fact beyond excellent. The servers are very attentive and polite, just making your dining experience all the better. There's nothing better than being appreciated by the staff that you're taking the time to dine there. The dining room is well decorated and dimly lit for those wanting a romantic meal.
