This was my favorite restaurant of the trip! Beautiful water views, gorgeous lights at night, top notch service, and great food. We had a large party for my birthday and the server did a great job of making sure we had everything we could need, including a constant supply of libations. We loved our server, he was awesome and helped make our night. Lots of gf designations on the menu made it easy for me to order, and I was super excited to get to have the crab bisque! It was delicious and I could have just had another helping of that and been satisfied. We also had the crab artichoke dip, which was very good, and shared a filet that was perfectly prepared. The drinks were super cute too, I now have quite the collection of piggies. The only let down was the dessert, we ordered the creme brulee, but it was not bruleed.. just creme. A solid performance from the fine dining venue at Roche Harbor Resort THE ROSES: Probably the best thing about McMillin's is the service. From the hostess to the servers, McM's works very hard to ensure customer satisfaction. The staff is professional and gracious. The cuisine rises to its price point. Particularly noteworthy is their expertise at preparing seafood (which is a good thing because the Pacific Northwest is renowned for its seafood). Between my wife and I, our dinner had crab, oysters, scallops, prawns, salmon, and sablefish. All were prepared perfectly - nothing over- or under-cooked (of course the oysters, which were from the bay next door, which were raw and perfectly shucked. We mentioned it was our wedding anniversary, and our thoughtful server passed word of this to the people doing the nightly 'retirement of the colors' ceremony, where the MC mentioned it. That was a real treat. THE THORNS: It's partly because the resort caters to an upscale yachting crowd (which can be a bit boisterous after a few drinks), but the dining room can be a bit loud, particularly if you're seated in the back where the ceiling is lower. Try to avoid a table in this area. Another rather weird hiccup was they forgot to include the salmon that was supposed to be part of my seafood pasta entree. There were plenty of scallops and prawns and some crab, so I honestly didn't mind, because I'm actually indifferent to salmon. I did mention this to the server, and she brought out a small plate of perfectly prepared salmon in sauce. I was actually rather full by then, but the salmon did make for a perfect omelette filling the next day! THE VERDICT: The dinner was not cheap, but very good value for money. As resort area restaurants go, McMillin's Dining Room is actually better than one would normally expect. I heartily recommend this restaurant. read more

We come back to Mcmillans every year, and this year it has improved. The prime rib is always the standout. Additionally, the kids menu has improved, with more options and some additional options if you ask. Their bread is terrific, and the drinks are back to what they were a few years ago, really really good. The only disappointment was the salmon. It came with a grapefruit sauce that really did not taste like anything. Unfortunately, it is farmed salmon, and it is mealy. I would not order it again. So, go here for the prime rib and the drinks. Avoid the salmon until they change the preparation and the fish, which they have branded as "Ora." read more

I have spent zero time in Puget Sound since 1981, when a tiny coffee roaster with a cool, green mermaid logo was starting up near the printing business of an acquaintance. But my Dad had, plus a brother who had a Skipper's license to sail, and earned a Motor Trawler Qualification during COVID. The world has changed. When I was a boy, this harbor was the site of a failed lime company, a decrepit hotel, and a handful of hardy islanders. Now it is slick, buffed up, capitalized and modernized. Since my home harbor is in Arizona, I call it "Sedona of the Sound." It is May 14, 2026. We are on The Sound for a number of reasons. A sister's birthday, a brother's love of vacation adventure and other family business. He booked us into McMillin's this evening. My devoted followers, my dozen readers, my fans; on this journey I've touched on farm to table a bit. Our McMillin's dinner was farm to table squared. The Pacific Northwest is a part of our planet wealthy beyond understanding. The Native People of the region displayed their wealth, and generosity, with the Potlatch tradition; products of the sacred earth given away. Social status determined by how much a family or clan gifted to others. The natural wealth remaining operates on a different model, we all know well. Some of the gifts from Mother Earth have changed, the bounty remains. When a group of talented, dedicated humans prepare the highest quality of earth's bounty, a delicious, and for Sweet D and me, a rare, dining experience lay dead ahead. With a harbor view to our port side. Our appetizers were oysters and calamari. The best tasting oysters I've ever eaten, sweet from the sea. Oysters farmed and grown in an inlet a mile up the road. The buttermilk marinated, sliced and breaded squid caught nearby. No deliciously breaded tiny tough rings and curly tentacles. These were sliced, breaded, tender "Calamari fries" delighting all at our table. Superb cocktails,vexcellent Athletic NA pale ale. My favorite NA is Clausthaler, this is a finish line tie. My friend Lal Fernando drinks Clausthaler to keep his kidneys healthy. He related to me the elected leaders of the Baha'i Faith in Israel drink it for Their Health at some meetings. Beet salad, House Specialty bleu cheese salad. In my mind the average beet brings "earthy" to mind. McMillin's does not serve average beets. We definitely had Bassano, and likely Sweet Beets ringing our delicate stack of mixed greens, with balsamic sprinkles. Beautiful, fresh, sweet, healthy. My brother had the bleu cheese Specialty. Again, the lovely greens dressed in a mild bleu cheese, nice on the palate. Main courses: Prime rib, salmon, Okanogan Valley Wagyu beef. Asparagus vegetable side. Prime Rib, another House Specialty from an Okanagon Valley Ranch. You have three choices: Roasted, seared or blackened on 700 degree cast iron. If you know the Okanogan Valley, even emasculated bulls relish the skies, weather, perfect pastures and towering peaks. Prime rib regular roasted, medium rare, tasting of sweet grass, perfect seasons and pure mountain snowmelt and Pacific rains. Wagyu - Japanese feeding style, well marbled beef is eaten rare or mediym rare for maximum flavor. My tradition has become medium well to well done. Our shared 8 ounce cut had good flavor and tenderness. The United States Pacific Coast until 1935 was likely the planet's most productive wild salmon fishery. McMillin's will serve the region's best Salmon, cooking it perfectly. My sister sang praises. There is no fish like native fish fresh from it's native waters. It is THE fish to eat. Washington State produces a large percentage of Our Nation's asparagus. McMillin's asparagus, robust, highest quality Northwest asparagus, tender, sweet, with mild post-asparagus dining effects. Our dessert was Creme brulee, four fresh raspberries on top. Happy Birthday Sis. A thin, crackling brulee over a soft, slightly sweet custard. Berries quartered so all could have a bite of rasberry and brulee. I had my standard dessert cup of coffee. This is not my style of dining. My brother arranged this very special dinner because this was onr of the final times three of we five children gathered together in unity and harmony to close out generational family tasks. Mostly good food, excellent service, and beautiful views of Roche Harbor. For appetizers the crab cakes were huge and full of delicious crab meat, Caesar salad was a decent portion with a nice tang that I appreciated, and the crab bisque was okay but we wished there was more crab flavor and that the crab meat wasn't chewy. My father-in-law really enjoyed his prime rib, and from overhearing neighboring tables it was a hit everywhere. Salmon was cooked well but was disappointing because it was ora salmon and not Copper River. The special was a black cod that was also cooked perfectly but lacked a strong miso flavor that I would expect. Also really enjoyed our cocktails, my manhattan was strong, my wife's spritzer and my daughter's pomegranate ginger mocktail were refreshing. Overall the food was good but overpriced, about what you'd expect for a tourist destination. Have to give a shout out to the service here, it's top notch. This place is fabulous! I came here with a group of 6 in Memorial Day weekend and we did have to wait about 45 mins for a table, but it was worth the wait! We started with 3 apps, tuna poke wonton nachos, calamari, and truffle fries. It's hard to pick a favorite because they were all outstanding! The fries were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside in the best of ways, and the sauce was delicious! The tuna in the nachos was delicious, fresh, soft, and with the wontons and toppings it made a perfect bite. Let's talk about the Calamari though... please order this. Everyone. Now. lol It is hands down the best calamari I have ever eaten. Every single bite was perfectly tender and the sauce and garnishes brought the perfect fresh flavor to a fried dish. 10/10 I want to go back for more as I'm writing this from back home in Seattle. We had a range of other food, we all shared a Caesar salad that was phenomenal and it was HUGE, it fed 6 of us! I got the wagyu cooked to a perfect medium (order the horseradish sauce on the side with this, trust me!) my husband got the crab mac and cheese which was generous with the crab meat, although a small portion all together if you were to order just that. A couple beef dips were order at the table and enjoyed. And another pasta dish with cavatappi noodles and sausage and garlic bread which was a giant serving and delicious. Drinks were great and service is friendly! I do wish our waitress checked in more, but it was super busy so understandable. IMO McMillan's is the best place to go for fine dining on San Juan Island. We have tried them all multiple times and they seem to be the most consistent with the most consistent service. Every meal I've had there in the last couple years have been worth the money. (and that's saying a lot as it's extremely expensive for working stiffs like us!) Some of our favorite dishes are the salmon, the prime rib, and the seafood Pappardelle. (My person fav!!) The bread is so good It's hard not to fill up on it! I also highly recommend that blue cheese salad, we've been getting it for years and it's just perfect. They also have an extensive wine list but rarely get a bottle as it really adds to the tab. The staffing and service are above and beyond the call of duty! In the winters, they have 20% off for locals on Thursday nights. That's our favorite time to come. Enjoy! read more

The rack of lamb was my personal favorite but the prime rib was quite good as well! They also have a great wine selection! I love all the Longshadows selections! It's expensive, but it's worth it because it's high quality. The environment: This restaurant actually has a lot of history, as our waitress explained to us. The restaurant also has quiet classical music playing in the background and a beautiful view of the harbor if you happen to be sitting next to a window. We had a perfect experience at McMillin's. It was a cold Wednesday night, so the restaurant was not busy. I had a reservation to be safe anyway. Our server was charming and attentive. We started with Oysters from the local oyster farm that were small (as they should be), served with both a house-made mignonette and cocktail sauce that were great accents. Next, we split a Caesar that had bacon and fire-roasted cherry tomatoes, with a strong anchovy flavor, which my husband prefers in his Caesar dressing. For entrees, I ordered a seafood pappardelle with lemon cream sauce that was wonderful. It was rich, had a variety of fish and shellfish and not a ton of noodles (thank goodness), so I didn't feel too full from the dish. My hubby had 12 oz. prime rib with sautéed mushrooms and a baked potato. Their 'steakhouse butter' for the potato has herbs, spices, chopped bacon and cheese, so it's just a big, fluffy scoop of decadent topping. The prime rib was seasoned beautifully, with whipped horseradish cream. The mushrooms made a perfect accompaniment to the steak. Finally, we finished with a butterscotch pot de crème. Sooooooo yummy. I think most tables in the restaurant have a spectacular view of the harbor. This restaurant and surrounding environment feels like a cross between quaint, picturesque Americana and a Hallmark movie. I'm so glad I made the trek from town and then through the hotel grounds to find the entrance. It was worth it! This place was completely full and they only had one bartender making all the drinks for the entire restaurant, but she handled it like a pro. Came here for our dad's 65th birthday attempting to show him how much we loved him and win his affection. I was recommended this place by a friend who hadn't been in years but said it was the best restaurant. I might argue with her a little on that. They sat us in the back, which is fine but I made reservations 6 weeks in advanced noting it was a special birthday (60 was during COVID we're celebrating now) hoping to get a window seat. My fault for not blatantly asking for one. It was dark and did not have a good view. Our server comes over, while she was nice, she was not happy. Not sure I saw her smile once. I don't necessarily blame her, I've dealt with tourists all day too once but maybe a grin? Again, I'm being picky it's my dad's birthday. I mention the birthday thing to her - did you know it's my dad's birthday btw? No response. Cool maybe she didn't hear me.. awkward. Food comes, it's fine. Crab cakes - meh. Blue cheese salad - two thumbs up. Steak - I'd order it again. At the end of the meal we order the apple pie. It comes out with a candle. Hooray she heard me! The apple pie was the best thing we ate all night. Omg so crumbly, so flavorful. Made up for everything else. Would I recommend? Maybe? Options are limited over there. If you're looking for fine dining on the island, here is a must stop! My girlfriend and I ate here for my birthday dinner, and we were more than pleased. The ambiance is lovely, service excellent, and food perfect. We had the Dungeness crab bisque which was very good, it had a lovely tomato and crab taste. We also had the oysters, which were some of the best I've ever had. Sourced from the islands, and so fresh and delicate. $24 for 6. For entrees my girlfriend had the miso Chilean sea bass which melted in your mouth, and they absolutely nailed the marinade. Just so delicious. I had the scallop pappardelle which was very good - rich without being heavy and the lemon, capers, and tomatoes add just enough brightness. I couldn't recommend this place enough and will definitely be coming back when we're back on the island :) so glad we found this place! For the quality at that price we think it's well worth it. read more

We had an exceptional dinner here in mid October. First of all, it's classically beautiful inside with tiered tables so each table has a stunning view of the harbor and marina. The service was exquisite--friendly, professional, and sincere. She also gave us a few tips for our next day hike on Stuart Island (she was absolutely right about Turn Point Lighthouse). The food was outstanding--beginning with the crispy Brussels sprouts. Perfection ( if only my mother had prepared Brussels sprouts this way, I would have been a fan decades ago). My autumn salad was delicious--the pecans added crunch and girth. My husband's prime rib was remarkable and managed to feed him for two more dinners on the boat. I can't praise McMillan's enough. It's one of the best restaurants I've enjoyed in a long time. When we're back in Roche Harbor next year, we'll return hungry. read more

I don't know why this restaurant wasn't on everybody's lips when we asked where to get a great meal while on Friday Harbor. The marina location is lovely even at night. The staff have been friendly and welcoming. The food has delighted. While on the spendy side for those of us with limited discretionary cash, it's worthy of a splurge for those with budgets. If you go during the day, you'll be around a lot of people milling around. Evenings in Autumn and Winter are a calmer experience. If time allows, definitely give a visit. read more

A long-time visitor warned us "it's not what it used to be..." Not having a history to draw from, I can only speak of my first experience. And I feel good about sharing five stars for setting, service, menu and ingredients. Their signature prime rib was excellent. One of our group ordered the blackened version.... wonderful! My halibut was well sourced, firm in texture, and well presented. Drinks, both alcoholic and otherwise, fit in perfectly. And the early evening light on the harbor was beautiful. We went with the oysters which came with a tasty vinaigrette and a cocktail sauce. All so good! My partner had the dungeness crab bisque. Which was also amazing! We shared a delicious and refreshing spring salad. For dinner I had the tenderloin steak and lobster hash. It was so delicious and decadent. The tenderloin was cooked spot on to medium rare, the hash had a butter on top and was amazing! My girlfriend had the scallops which also was full of flavor. When we arrived our table was ready. the wait staff was beyond wonderful. They were prompt, pleasant and efficient. We couldn't have had better service. We all ordered different entrees. The restaurant is overlooking the bay in Roche Harbor, I don't think it could have been more picturesque in the night sky and shimmering lights. Very over priced and they have the gumption to add a service charge to boot. Will not be going there again. Best king salmon ive ever had. The vegetables had amazing flavor also and it was a beautiful presentation. My husband said it was one of the best steaks he had eaten. Expensive yes, but you get what you pay for which is quality. I would recommend going at sunset and getting a window view if possible. They do the flag ceremony at sunset and its fun to watch. The food also came out very quickly and our waiter was very nice and quick with service. I even forgot my camera after we left and our waiter came running outside to catch us, and he had to run a ways because we were already by the tunnel with the plants. This is a tourist trap and here is why. The oysters on the halfshell were great, however, the $57 "dry aged rib eye" not so much. It was overcooked, had no flavor, previously frozen, and definitely not dry aged. The side of "local" mushrooms not fresh either. Of note, every second interaction with the server was an attempt to upsell...."do you want to get a salad or soup while you wait in between your appetizer and the steak..." and same routine around dessert, coffee, liquors you name it. The martini was fine but hard to tell if it was made with the advertised brand vodka or generic well. No beer on tap; the beer can served warmer than the table water. I picked this place for location and ambiance and gave it a chance despite the low rating....but Yelp was right once again. read more

My husband ordered what he thought was a special and it came out as prime rib (he's not a fatty steak guy) they were nice enough to exchange it but it was another fatty steak they exchanged for. The flavor was fine but he didn't eat half of it. The burger flavor was good but the meat was chewy. I wouldn't order it again. The dessert was delicious. The crème brûlée came with a vanilla, lavender, and espresso. The lavender was surprisingly good and perfect portion to not be overwhelming.
