First of all, we walked in to find a vacuum sitting in the middle of the lobby with the cord strung out all over. There was a lady with a walker in front of us waiting to order, along with several older people. I kept watching to make sure someone didn't trip and fall. Hello, lawsuit waiting to happen but I digress. On to the food... My husband and I both ordered a swiss mushroom Runza. The best I can ascertain is whoever created the Runza said "hey, let's take a hot pocket but make it really sh*tty!". It might have been the worst sandwich I've ever eaten. The bread was soggy and the filling had a super weird taste. I will say, the fries and onion rings with the French onion dip were pretty good, so there's that at least. I'm afraid this meal will make me Runza to the bathroom all night. Yikes.

As we were driving home to Iowa after a long roadtrip out west, we started to get a little hungry…read more If you have ever driven across western Nebraska on Interstate-80, you also know that your options are limited until you get closer to population centers of the state like Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha. When we saw the Wendy's sign on I-80, we thought "ok... let's gas up, grab a quick bite to eat, and get back on the road for the last few hours to get home." So, we decided to eat at Wendy's in Ogallala, NE. What a mistake that was! We entered Wendy's, which was empty except for a few diners at the tables, and we approached the counter (see the photos). You would have thought we were invisible, because everyone just kept doing what they were doing behind the counter and in the kitchen talking with no interest in the customers waiting in the lobby to order food. After about 5 minutes of literally standing right in front of them and not even a "hello", a young kid in the baseball cap tells us that they are kiosk-order only. What?? Why didn't you say that when we walked in? So, we ordered at their kiosk (which is a terrible customer experience at all fast-food restaurants by the way). And we wait. As we are standing there for nearly 10 minutes, we observe a manager that looked like she was up all night on meth (I'm serious), coughing into her arm (picture bending your arm and holding it about 6 - 8 inches away from your mouth, then coughing!) while preparing food. Another employee had an issue with the cash register, which we did not understand the need for if you're insisting on people using a credit card at the kiosk. So the manager walks away from the food with her rubber gloves on, helps the employee at the register (touching it again, WITH the gloves on), then returns to the food that she was handling without changing gloves. I ordered a Dave's Single with Cheese and a junior french fries; pretty standard stuff for a normal Wendy's, but a last... this is NOT a normal Wendy's (or is it??). Ten minutes later, after we tell them that they can just refund our money so we can get the hell out of there, they finally produce our orders. I opened the bag to find a barely wrapped burger that was on a room temp bun and tasted like it was sitting there for hours. The fries were not hot or tasted fresh at all. Look at the other reviews of this Wendy's. I completely agree with the suggestion that #Wendys corporate needs to get involved with this place and clean it up in every way! The QSR business has a lot of competition now, and if Wendy's tolerates this type of service, they are going to see some tough times ahead.

As we traveled from Wyoming back toward Illinois at the end of our six-week national parks road…read moretrip, we stopped in Nebraska for our second to last overnight break before getting home. After weeks of hiking, driving, unpacking, repacking, and surviving on road snacks and caffeine, we decided to have dinner at Tres Margaritas. The restaurant itself is very cute and colorful, with lots of traditional Mexican décor and bright painted chairs that give the place a lively atmosphere. We arrived pretty early, around 5 PM, thinking it would be quiet, but the place filled up surprisingly fast. It definitely seems to be a very popular local spot. The food was actually very good for a road-trip dinner stop. We shared a large steak taco salad that was absolutely enormous and honestly could have fed two hungry hikers without any problem. It came loaded with carne asada, avocado, beans, tortilla chips, and very fresh ingredients. Definitely the highlight of the meal. I also had a margarita, while my husband ordered an Arnold Palmer, and both were good. Now, the funniest part of the evening was honestly the service. Our server, Daniel, was polite and friendly, but for reasons we never fully understood, he addressed only me during the entire dinner. Since I speak Spanish, he kept calling me "señora" and speaking directly to me while almost completely ignoring my husband's existence. Not in a rude way exactly, just... very specifically focused on me. He would take the order looking at me. Bring the food looking at me. Ask questions looking at me. Meanwhile my husband was sitting right there like some kind of invisible travel ghost. At one point my husband joked, "I guess I disappeared and nobody told me." Honestly, it became more amusing than anything else, and we spent most of dinner quietly laughing about the strange dynamic. The only slightly annoying part was that the check arrived before we were asked whether we wanted dessert, which seems to be becoming a recurring theme on this trip. Overall though, the food was fresh, satisfying, and generous, the atmosphere was lively and colorful, and it was a pleasant stop at the tail end of a very long journey. After six weeks on the road, sometimes a giant taco salad and an unintentionally hilarious dinner experience are exactly the kind of memories that stick with you.

Wow, was that a process and I was woefully patient. I watched, patiently as a junior associate mishandled my order over and over and over and over again. Many times the order was incorrect. It was as if, we were both going through training discovering the nuances of their menu ordering system. All while a senior employee was watching from nearby and just prodding her to keep going despite the many hiccups. It was awful. If the manager had just stepped up, I could have had my order and been out of there in 20 minutes flat. What should have been a quick order took far too long to assess and then the wait and having to re-check the order after it was prepared. We went over that order 4-5 times and yet in the bag a few items were incorrect. I left some 40 minutes later. Thankfully the food was decent and breakfast hit the spot.
