Decided to come for ice cream one day since I heard good things and I was very impressed with the place. Food: the ice cream here was absolutely delicious. The ice cream wasn't extremely sweet, but it was very flavorful, and they offered two or three dozen different flavors, most of them I've never seen before. I ended up getting a cinnamon bun ice cream, which was to die for. Aesthetic: the place has a nice old school parlor feel with some 50s-inspired decor. Very inviting. Service: I had the pleasure of working with meet Paul and Mariellen who were both very nice and caring. They were extremely attentive and helped out a lot. read more

I stopped here after dinner for a quick treat. There are so many flavors! I don't think I have ever seen any ice cream parlor with as many flavors as McCool's. Having said that though, the flavors are all variations of classic flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, coffee, or fruit, with add-ins. I tried the Chocolate Moose Tracks (chocolate ice cream, fudge, and mini-peanut butter cups) and it was pretty good. I do wish there were more creative or modern flavors though (1 star off). McCool's has a wide variety of flavors sure to satisfy anyone, as well as toppings, shakes, and sorbets! My friends and I came in here with a check no other store would take and they took it, and the cashier was really friendly and accommodating as well! McCool's also had Christmas decorations, lights, and a mini Christmas tree as well, and the interior is warm and welcoming. Would definitely recommend for any ice cream enjoyers! read more

Soft serve was so good! I did the twist with a wafer cone. The small is more like a medium/large so if you're not a big ice cream eater the small is pretty big. The soft serve can be coated with butterscotch or fudge.... go for it.! If you like flavored ice cream there's tons of unique flavors. Lots of tables can fit about 25ppl comfortably. Bathroom available, great place over all. Service was okay, wasn't really greeted although it wasn't busy. No smiling. Eat in or take out! Have a great visit! There is an ice cream flavor for everyone. The staff are friendly although to pay, the person who serves you goes to the cash register, rather than there being separate cashier. I had the Salted Banana Foster in a small cup and my friend had twist soft serve in a cone. The Salted Banana Foster was banana flavored and delicious with salted caramel in the ice cream. The twist was a mix of chocolate and vanilla. The size of the small is more like a medium and the soft serve was pilled up on the cone, so much that we needed an extra cup to put the ice cream that was falling in. I was only in Madison for 24hrs but this place was definitely a highlight that I will visit again. read more

And they're very generous with their toppings. The complimentary water cooler for customers must be a life-saver in the summer months. Seating is a little limited, and if you're walking from the front of the store to the back of the line be prepared to suck in your stomach. However, once you get your ice cream, Madison offers plenty of benches on the sidewalks. I also learned from comparing purchases with my friends that when you want a cone, but may not lick fast enough to keep up with the melting treat, getting a cone coated with chocolate and sprinkles will help dam the flow! read more

McCool's had a great selection of unique flavors. There were so many combinations/flavors that I haven't seen before and weren't crazy. These were just delicious concoctions. I'm a creature of habit and usually stick to my coffee ice cream but I tried their oatmeal cookie and it was mmhmm good! I tried my friend's chocolate ice cream and with just one bite I could tell that this was the good stuff. I'm not a huge chocolate ice cream fan but this was so rich and creamy it won me over. This seems like a popular spot with the locals. There's a good amount of seating for the size of the shop and most of the tables were taken. So...ice cream is ice cream. And Hershey's ice cream (which is what McCool's serves) is definitely very good. The ice cream in the freezer is always fresh, and never gummy or gross. The sizes are EXTREMELY generous, so make sure to use caution when ordering! They make one heck of a milkshake/malt, too. Their frozen yogurt is supposedly delicious (I haven't tried it myself), but it is extremely popular. The staff is very nice, helpful, and quick! If I could give this place two separate ratings, the ice cream would be average and the staff would be lousy. I work in downtown Madison and so Mc Cool's is one of two ice cream shops within walking distance to grab a quick snack during work. The other being Carvel so Mc Cool's is somewhat of a lesser of two evils. They serve Hershey's ice cream. Frankly, any ice cream shop that doesn't make their own ice cream isn't worth going to in my opinion. There are a couple of decent flavors but nothing superb. The one item that my co-workers and I like are their frozen yogurt blend-ins. I don't know if the fro-yo is homemade or not, it probably isn't. They blend any kind of topping into the yogurt and it comes out in a soft serve consistency. It's ok. The staff here is by far the worst aspect. I don't think I've ever seen any of them smile. This is especially true of the older males who work there. They just seem like the last thing they want to be doing is working in an ice cream parlor helping people. There was one instance where one of my friends wanted a blend-in and the young lady helping her was trying to explain that the machine was not working properly. One of the older men came up and asked her what the problem was, she explained, and he just kind of shrugged his shoulders and made a face as if to "Oh well, I don't care." Did not even offer an "I'm sorry" or even a look on his face that suggested he was sorry. In fact it was just the opposite. All in all, I will probably continue to go here when I'm jonesing for some ice cream on a hot day but really, it's only out of convenience. Very good Hershey's ice cream. Better than average selection of flavors. They have a few sorbets and low fat / low sugar options as well. Slightly high price point, but not unreasonable. There is a decent amount of seating, both inside and outside of the parlor. It is a little tight inside, a point that's exacerbated when it's more crowded. My disappointment was with the service. I did not appreciate my server copping an attitude when I asked if they were in fact known for their milkshake. She denied that was the case, but did reluctantly admit the establishment had won a top prize for that very item several years ago. When I'd asked what flavor, I was met with another run-around. To further insult me, my server then made disparaging comments about my inquiry when my back was turned, which was met with guffaws from the staff. A simple note to all teenagers: unlike vision, hearing is not impaired by the direction of one's head. For shame. I thought I'd take a ride over there as I'd had dinner in Summit and thought I'd treat my family to something new. First and last time I'll be there. I'd rather take my business to Frozen In Time in Livingston. A slightly lesser selection--also Hershey's ice cream--is more than made up for by a far friendlier staff, not to mention a lower price point. read more

Funny. I just raved about King Kone Creamery in Hershey, PA and how I would love a place like this in my local area. BING! It's here and so glad I found the place. Where have I been? I told the server it's our first time here and he looked at us with raised eyebrows like I had 2 heads. It's contradicting where I see a banner plastered to top of the ice cream case that said smile in every scoop. He wasn't smiling when he scooped ice cream for us but nevertheless, I found my ICE CREAM HAVEN shop that serves Hershey's ice cream with so many original flavors like Cappucino crunch, Smores, and Red velvet cake. They also have 32 soft serve frozen yogurt flavors and a Barista for you caffeine junkies. The back of the ice cream shop is where the line begins. There's a back door and parking in the back. around 9 p.m in the summer, this place is packed. The place is clean and plenty of seating in a nostalgic ice cream parlor that serves extraordinary ice cream treats. read more
