Great little neighborhood pub that is probably overlooked by their flashier competitors up on Lancaster Avenue. I've never been disappointed with my food here, and you like pub fare you're sure to find something on the menu that will hit the spot. The brisket grilled cheese was phenomenal (though more meat than cheese) and their roast pork rivals anything you'll find in the city. They have a wide variety of options on tap too. I've been to McCloskeys a few times recently, and while I've heard great things about them...I've yet to experience it. I ordered the roast beef sandwich with fries...my friend ordered muscles and the ham sandwich special. The muscles arrived cold. Not warm, not tepid...just cold. They were sent back for a trip in the microwave which is a place that shellfish should never journey too...if you want them to remain tender. When I ordered, I asked about a few items and was assured that "people love the roast beef". Now I've had "French Dip" style roast beef before at other restaurants, and when done right...it's a memorable experience. Crusty toasted torpedo style roll brimming with thinly sliced hot beef...provolone cheese melted over the top and down the sides...served with a side of au jus dipping sauce, that you would want to slurp down a soup bowl full. But this...was not that! The sandwich arrived on a hamburger style bun...the meat was piled "adequately" in the center but sloped off considerably as it headed for the edge of the bun. There was no need to worry about meat falling out as I took a bite...as none of it protruded past the buns edge. The cheese was there...a single uninspired round slice covered the cold and somewhat soggy bottom of the bun... and wasn't melted...at all! I suspect that the kitchen assumed that the meat would melt the cheese...but the meat would have to be hot for that to happen. In this sandwich...the closer you got to the middle of the "meat mound"...the colder it got. And little did I know when asked if I wanted provolone on the sandwich...that it would be an additional charge. Now for my fries. They weren't hot...they weren't even warm...they were "ice cold"! I sent them back light heartedly joking that there must be a door open in the kitchen (it was a cold evening) and the server returned shortly with hot fresh ones...minus the pickles that were on my plate. This goes to show that fries can reach the table...hot. The hot ham and cheese sandwich "special", served on a pretzel bun, wasn't hot...and wasn't special. I saw no melted cheese...only thin dry slices of ham, stiff as roofing shingles, protruded from the roll. There was no mustard...no sauce...no "something special" to make the "special", special... just stiff little sad ham planks...wondering where they went wrong On both recent visits...the service has been "spotty". (I know that cell service in the pub isn't spotty, because on my first visit...both servers had their heads buried in their phones). It doesn't seem like there's a real system in place for insuring that the customers receive "attentive" service. To their credit...they did remove the muscles from the check without us asking...but I never got a feeling that the next party to walk through the door...would have a better experience. When you find a good local pub with great food...it's like going to eat at grandmas house. You know that you'll always leave feeling warm, wanted, and fed really well. And you'll be excited by the thought of a return visit. I'm still looking. read more

I always get the same sandwich whenever I eat here. The blackened chicken with blue cheese and French fries on the side. I've had salad here as well but I prefer their sandwiches. Service is always prompt. Most of the time I've visited, the bar is full or there's a good amount of people sitting at tables. So it's a popular spot in Ardmore. Parking is limited to the street but they do have parking lots close by. read more

First time here, it's an old haunt of my wife, an Ardmore native. She hadn't been in maybe 15 years, walks in, & sees the bartender she knew, Marty. So cute. He was great as was the service generally. Food came out hot, fresh & fast. All plates were completely cleaned. Chicken parm with linguine (my son inhaled it), fabulous Italian wedding soup, the best potato skins ever, loved the red onion & shockingly delicious wings. We are customers of McCloskey's for 25+ years; we'll come back. But tonight's service was atypical, frustrating, and highly avoidable...if the owners and managers would train their team and right-size their kitchen to manage their nearly doubled seating capacity with their outdoor dining area. Several of the lowlights of the meal: waited 30+ minutes to receive our drinks, food runners carried water cups and food plates against their dirty shirts and then served them to us, entree Caesar salad with salmon served with appetizer without other entrees. We received app and requested entree salad be served with other entrees; we observed that salad was placed on shelf in bar area while we waited another 15+ minutes for remaining entrees. When served, salad was not tossed with dressing. Food runner was sure to let us know she thought we were rude when we brought to her attention that how she served us was subpar, at best. When bill came, not a single item was removed from the bill in consideration of the overwhelmingly poor service. We paid full tab and tipped 20+% in cash...not because of great service but because the servers, bartender, food runners and kitchen staff were only partially responsible for the failures of the night. This was overwhelmingly a failure of owners, leaders, managers who seemed more interested in profit over customer service. read more

It was a one and done for me. Obviously a go to place for many other people but my experience was not great. Cauliflower appetizer was heavily breaded, not recognizable as cauliflower - looked like balls instead of actual pieces of cauliflower, I was overpriced coming in at a cost that was more than my sandwich (entree).. My Caprese sandwich, which I thought would be served cold, came out more like a Panini and used thick bread. Nothing light about this meal. And it seemed like my sandwich order got lost in the kitchen or something because I had to switch to her to go order after waiting a half an hour. One thought was that the kitchen was backed up because of the large outdoor seating area that was being well-used on a nice evening; No point in having extra seating outside if your kitchen is unable to keep up with the demand. All staff was very nice and waitress was apologetic and was going to investigate what happened in the kitchen after I left. Sandwich was taken off my bill since I had to get to a concert nearby. There are plenty of other options that are walkable in the neighborhood so I would not repeat this experience. Your experience may be different, so maybe be worth a try. read more

I came here for a meetup. I had zero expectations and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of food choices from burger to pasta. The wide range of beer and other drinks was also good. Mostly, I was surprised by how the caprese salad was. By far one of the best salads I've had from a restaurant. We ordered burgers and it was cooked perfectly . I hate sitting at the bar, you get to see the good the bad and the ugly. What I witnessed was the ugly. The bartender, who's name was Marty was totally gross. Eating behind the bar while working hand to mouth, coughing into his hand, sometimes not covering his mouth while coughing. Serving glassware where he put his fingers on the lips of the glasses where people are putting their mouths. He never washed his hands in the hour that I observed him working .This was just gross. Their weinershnitzel put me in a coma, and the workers here are good people. It was very, very greasy but paired excellently with the capers, sauce and pasta. My gf got the caprese salad and it was the perfect compliment- as fresh as can be to wash that grease away. Some dumb old lady walked out drunk and the bartender chased her down and stopped her from going off and getting a DUI or worse. They legitimately care about patrons unlike many other bars. I feel conflicted sharing not the best experience.. perhaps one day I'd give a try again but it would be after very careful thought. Grew up around here, so much has changed, just wanted a cold bar, not rowdy and a bite of food. Seemed attractive and cute, reviews not awful, walked in and could hear of the internal challenges and that is something you should do privately. Ordered me a beer, perused the menu. Received my beer, took a sip and immediately thought it was hot. Then thought, maybe I'm just hot, it's hot out and I've had a long day. Sitting there still over hearing the conversation involving staffing, I witnessed a young man exit the kitchen and enter the restroom with a large pot in hand. Thought hmm, wonder where that pot is going as he returned to the kitchen. Kind bartender asked if I would like another and despite what I just saw, I said sure, but a cold one. Turns out warm beer was a known issue. From that point I wasn't sure my experience would get any better. My beer was comped and off I went. They must have run out to Arby's for the beef, Although Arby's would have been better. Gelatinous, snappy and extremely salty extremely processed beef. Wings and Chicken Parm were cooked in oil so old they come to the table nearly black. Great staff! Really good food and reasonably priced drinks. My friend and I were in the area and were starving so we found McCloskey's. Spoke to Marty on the phone and he was friendly and saved a table for us until we walked over. Although we were sitting outside, we were right under the heater. It seems weird to give a bar 5 stars but this is much more than a bar. I came in here for some bar food on a week night and got so much more than that! The place was packed so that should tell you something. This is a legit restaurant with great food. Every entree that went by my table looked and smelled amazing. I got the shepherd's pie which was huge and the best I've ever had. The interior of McCloskey's was really well done so kudos to whoever did it! It has such a warm inviting feel. When the weather is nice, they can open up the entire front and so you can sit inside and enjoy all that fresh air. ..wonderful! Live music, especially the jazz is a welcome edition. We started out with potato skins which came out with 4 half slices, one more burnt than others but other than that a good portion of fillings in each, with bacon, red onions and cheese. The cheese part was bland and could have used a sharp cheddar instead. I ordered the onion burger which came with cheddar and onion rings and a side of fries. The burger was cooked perfectly at medium with a nice char. The burger is huge! Took the other half home. My hubby had the Patty melt which was not a traditional melt. First let me say that my family and I love this place. We have been eating here once a week for over 20 years and obviously enjoy it very much. We also want to give a shout-out to Kim - the best bartender on the Main Line. On the negative side, however, I recently wanted a glass of wine and found that the wine on the drink menu may never be updated. In fact, a look behind the bar quickly shows that none of the visible bottles of wine are listed on the menu. it would seem easy enough to update the wine menu. Otherwise, we hope that McCloskey's keeps doing what they been doing for so long. read more

I been coming here for years. I see a disturbing trend. I will just comment on the most recent. Beef stew. Bowl 14.99. Served in a shallow plate. 2 tiny pieces of beef. 1 small potato. Couple carrots. 30 peas. 85% gravy. It tasted fine. But the serving size was not good. They took it off the bill. I paid for it anyway and left my usual large tip. I never want any thing for free. I just want what I paid for. I hope the next guy that orders it will actually get substance. read more

Another great experience at McCloskey's before going to the Ardmore Music Hall. Great service as always. Our waiter knew just when to check on us and make sure we had drinks when needed. The shepherds pie was amazing and just the right size. Their martinis are always poured just as ordered. The atmosphere is cozy but can get loud just because of the size of the establishment.
