Just walked out of this location, and will probably be my last. I am a huge aquatic hobbyist I have a 250 gallon successful Cichlid tank and a well-established reef tank and about to build another reef tank for my office space. I've been here a few times, some bad and some good experiences. I've been all over Houston searching for aquarium shops and this location happens to be the closest to me so I try to shop here but compared to everywhere else their prices are really high, the cleanliness is very low. But what gets me the most is the attitude of the owner. He does not care about customers. I simply asked the owner about a price on used equipment. Would not budge on price. Then he commented out loud "This is why I don't dick with the pricing, it's never enough". They only had one of my fish bagged and after that I had them put the rest of the fish back and I was just gonna take the one that was bagged and I got out of there. I have had other encounters with the owner being incredibly rude and had quite the attitude toward customers but I brushed it off but this time I've had enough. Fish Gallery is right up the road. If you want sub-par products with no guarantee then this is the place to go. Apparently they expect to stay in business based solely on luck. Here is the scenario, I purchased fish for my brother in law and after following all specified instructions presented by a lady named Tiffany, two of the fish purchased died four hours later. I immediately left a message, and contacted set business the following day. After being told there are no returns I asked the same lady known as Tiffany to have the owner contact me. Three days later and no response other than, it says it on the receipt, you can understand why this business is not the best choice. Keep in mind that PetSmart has cheaper prices for most of the fishes they carry. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. Hopefully this business will eventually realize that Service is what keeps a business going not strict guidelines. I decided that after the persons review below to explain a bit more. It was stated that after arrival home, that I must leave the fish in the tank for a min of Thirty min. From this point I am to take a total of ten minutes of slowly transferring liquid from the tank to each respective bag. My husband and I visited this store for the first time last week to buy a goldfish. We knew this place had really horrid reviews before going in, but we decided to go ahead and visit anyway since we weren't planning on buying any rare tropical fish, which is what we've observed the customers who had written bad reviews had purchased. We got there a little before 5:30PM, which is one hour before they closed on that particular day. Goodness gracious, I thought we had just entered a drug house and were about to get stabbed to death. It's dark, musty, and the floor's wet and dirty. The two girls at the cash register were nice though. They smiled when we entered, asked us if we were looking for anything in particular, then showed us to the back where they kept the goldfish tanks. We passed a fish on the way with a painful looking ulcer, and the one in the tank next to it had a massive growth protruding from one of its gills. It was so sad. I saw some other tanks that looked over crowded, and a few that could use a water change. I didn't see any dead fish though! Thank goodness. I was super glad when I saw that the goldfish tanks looked well maintained. Those fish were pretty active, and they looked relatively healthy. The girl that showed us to the tanks started to get a little overbearing though... she began badgering us about choosing a fish [even though we'd only been there for two minutes max], and I noticed that she was very short with the other customers in the store. I also happened to notice that the neckline of her shirt got lower and lower every time she would approach us. I know my husband's very attractive, but geez lady, have you no class? Ugh. He only has eyes for me, thank you very much. Anyway, we finally settle on a fish, and she just kind of scoops it out and tosses it in the bag, drenching me with fish water in the process and traumatizing my new pet. She offers me a half-hearted apology then disappears to the front to ring us up. Turns out our new fish is $14. That's about triple the price for a fancy goldfish at any other pet store we've been to. But we like the fish we've chosen so we pay and head out the door. We barely even make it to the car [which is parked right by the store entrance by the way] when those two girls come out, lock up, and drive off. Like, they left before we did! And it was only 5:45PM! They should've been open for another 45 minutes. So I give this place two stars. If they provided a better environment for their fish, had better customer service, and didn't flirt with my husband and creeped him out, then we'd be golden and I would've rated them five stars. Oh and the fish we bought there looks very happy and healthy. Glad we could provide a good home for her :D read more

We have an established saltwater aquarium and have had no problems with fish bought elsewhere. My husband likes fish r us because of the selection. Problem is the fish we buy tend to die very quickly after he purchases them. We had not bought any fish from them for a very long time but my husband decided to go there with our son for whatever reason. He bought a tang, a blenny and a sea urchin. The tang has ick and we separated him and now there are tiny worms floating in our aquarium. If all my fish die because of this stores sick fish, not that they would do anything for us, but I will be very upset. He spent over a 100 bucks on the new fish and had to buy a new filter for our small aquarium that we luckily had already to use as a hospital tank. I am always disappointed in our purchases there. read more

Recently purchased an Oscar from them and the person that waited on us told us that Oscar lay on the bottom. She stirred them up and we could not tell which one was laying on the bottom. This was exactly a week ago and since they do not guarantee their livestock, we will find another store. The fish is laying on it's side in the yard now. We should have never bought a fish from that tank. read more

We usually purchase fish from a place in Spring, but while we were driving we saw Fish R Us, which is much closer to us so we decided to give them a shot. This is the second time we have purchased fish from them. The first time we purchased a red severum and a green skat. When we took them home we noticed that the green skat kept putting up his dorsal fin to protect himself from the other fish. After I did some research on him I found out he is a brackish water fish. I called to make sure that would be ok in our fresh water tank and the owner said yes. A couple days later, he died. The second time we went last weekend, we were looking around for some fish for our cichlid tank. We spoke with one of the girls that worked there. We told her what type of fish we had including our biggest fish, the 6.5 inch chocolate cichlid. We asked her about some fish we liked and she told us they wouldn't be a good fit for our tank, and showed us her favorite fish, a Mono, which are about an inch. We liked them and couldn't decide between those, or a bigger blinker eye fish, and she told us that both would be a good fit for our tank. We were concerned about the size difference and she told us that they would be too fast to catch so they would be fine in our tank. We got 3 for $40 and change, and purchased some food and went home. We put them in the tank, and about 5 hours later we were watching tv and I heard one of the fish jump out of the water. I look over and it turned out they had caught one of the monos and was eating their face off. We quickly got the other two and put them in our other tank where we have 10 silver dollars. Within the next 4 days the other 2 had died, not from getting picked on or attacked, but just died. Turned out they are also brackish fish. I contacted the owner and he got mad at me saying we should have known better not to put a 1 inch fish in with our 6.5 inch fish. I said we had questioned that and the girl told us it would be fine. He said he doubted that happened and he doubted she went around with us tank by tank to answer all our questions because they usually had a lot of people on Saturday and don't have time to do that. I told him that we have 3 tanks, and while we are knowledgeable about fish,we know more about community fish than cichlids and still rely on the people that work at the stores to guide our decisions. He said any good fish owner knows not to put small fish in with big fish and he would recommend that we not get any more fish for our tank since we didn't know that. He was very rude, and implied that we were lying about that the girl suggested the Mono's for our tank and that she went around the store with us looking for a good fit. I told him he lost a customer, he said that was fine. We will continue driving 30 minutes to the fish store we started with when we moved here. We have 2 community tanks (which the owner said silver dollars are not community fish, but looking it up, they are indeed a large community fish) and have had community tanks for over 15 years, and have had our cichlid tank for over 2 years now. Out of the 5 fish we purchased at Fish R Us, we have 1 left. We will not return to Fish R Us. read more

I'm a fan of rainbow fish, and Fish R Us recently had golden rainbow fish in stock. I've looked for this particular fish for quite some time now. The price was just as expected, not above or below the rate I've seen online. The owner assisted me throughout the purchase process, and made sure I was set up for success at home, providing instruction regarding the diet he'd been feeding the fish. All of the fish were healthy, went through a two week quarantine beautifully, and have joined a school of rainbow fish in my 60 gallon aquarium. I highly recommend. read more

Only reason they get one star is because there is nothing less. Horrible experience with our first saltwater tank. They said everything was good to go when we brought in a water sample. Completely wrong. We lost 450$ worth of fish. Next problem, they sold us a pump that was not made for a saltwater tank for $270 which is about $160 higher than everywhere else I have looked since. i went in a month ago and spent a few hundred dollars on supplies for my koi pond. The lady there was very polite and everything went well. Today I went there to buy a floating log for the turtles in my pond. The owner pointed out the different wood selection and specifically the brazilian wood (floating wood) section to me and I spent $42 on the largest piece they had(It was the only descent looking piece out of the 4 they had). I went home and it sank straight to the bottom of the pond. I brought the piece back and the owner said I could exchange it for another piece which I would have gladly done if they had a suitable piece that floated. The owner refused to credit back my card and would only grant me store credit. While I was there an old couple came in with a dead angel fish and held up a receipt showing that they had purchased a couple of hundred dollars worth of fish. They asked for another angel fish and the owner told them that he was all out. The owner then proceeded to argue with them about how much they had paid for it even though they were showing him the purchase price on the receipt. I would never go back there. The owner is a liar and would rather screw people out of a few bucks instead of keeping the customers happy for repeat business. I ended up getting a $37 container of food while listening to him complain about how he hated his work. It's not my fault he hates his chosen career. I came into the store at 5 minutes before closing on Saturday, right away when I walked in I was told hurry and look because we close in 5 minutes. Well, after rushing to look I then asked the man working if a salt water snowflake eel would be okay in my aquarium already stocked with damsels, he stated it would be fine and that the eel's don't bother the fish. I told him I was new to salt water and that this was my first time there...I guess he felt the need to take advantage of me since I came in right before closing and held them up. Not 5 minutes after putting the eel in my tank he killed my blue damsel! I didn't know what to do with him so I left him in there, the next day he took a chunk out of another damsel. I researched them online and it clearly states that they will eat fish and should be kept alone. I called the store first thing when they opened today to see if they would take the eel back and refund my money and they said no but they would take him back for free. I'm sure they would! That would put them at a $20 profit for him! I am very upset about the loss of my fish and being misinformed just to make a buck. It's unethical to take advantage of someone just because they say they are new to something. It is very hard to find stores that carry healthy salt water fish, but I can guarantee that I will NOT go back to this store! I will also make sure I tell everyone I know that own's fish not to waste their money at this business. read more

I have a SPS dominated mixed reef tank and have been in the hobby for 10+ years. I recently bought a bicolor blenny from this shop and after quarantine added it to my sps dominated mixed reef. the blenny immediately started to nip at my corals and after only two days had compleatly striped my milli and tenuis of all their polyps, of course that is no fault of the store, just bad luck on my part. However, when i attempted to return the fish they would not refund my money(understandable) and refused to give me store credit(dick move). They said they would however take the blenny back(makes me wonder how many people had already bought this same fish and brought it back). Anyways, I always quarantine my fish and for good reason, while at this shop i noticed that almost all of their saltwater fish had ich or were in the same tank as other fish(tangs) that had ich. Having a "reef" tank, i am always interested in corals and was delighted to find that they had a few frag tanks with various corals, however i found that they were neglected and full of caulerpa and aiptasia and the only piece i was interested in was actually encrusted onto the rack so i was unable to purchase it. All in all, if you're serious about your tank and the well being of the inhabitants i would steer clear of this place or you will likely end up with a tank full of aiptasia, caulerpa and ich. I posted a similar review on their facebook page and the owner responded in a very rude arrogant manner, he implied that i was just an idiot and that i didn't know what i was talking about. This shop is immoral, unethical, disgusting and the owner is know it all jerk that takes advantage of people just to stay in business. STAY AWAY read more
