Our farmhouse kitchen!
Diane C.

Our remodeled kitchen came out even more spectacular than I was hoping - it's beautiful! From the professionalism of our project manager Eric, to the impressive craftsmanship of the various work crews, this was a wonderful experience and worth every penny. If you need any work done in your home - call MBK and be sure to ask for Eric and his team!

Drywall sprayed over walls that is not affected

The WORKMANSHIP was MEDIOCRE! Joey was our first contact and he sold us their service well, but was pretty much out of the picture once the contract was signed. Jeremiah was the contractor (we were told by a couple of their subcontractors that he's not even a contractor) that they assigned to do our kitchen remodel. The oversight was non existent as Jeremiah was hardly around to supervise the subcontractors. The nightmare with this remodel started when CalRock, the subcontractor that they hired was to square a previous arched frame. The previous arched frame was torn down and CalRock was to square it, but on the first attempt to frame it, they build an arch frame exactly what was just torn down. Of course it needed to be torn down. It took 5 attempts for them to get it right as their measurements were wrong each time until their 5th attempt with my husband supervising. Again, not sure if Jeremiah told them what needed to be done and given them the measurements. Also, CalRock did the drywall which feels and look like stucco. They had to get into my closet and in the laundry room to get into electrical wirings, so it also meant more drywall getting torn down and rebuild. They had drywall sprayed all over the walls, ceilings, doors and on the floor which they never bothered to clean or wipe down. My husband and I had to clean it up. They tried to fix the drywall, but they kept sending these 2 young kids (they looked under 18) who apparently did not know what they were doing to fix their own mistake. They used Hoang to do the painting. They painted on a Saturday and Jeremiah was going to be out of town. I told Jeremiah that I would supervise the painters and was told by Jeremiah, "they don't need to be supervised," so I didn't. I wished I did supervise! Hoang painters did not do any type of cleaning or prepping before they painted. They painted over debris and thick dust from the demo and from the drywall and never bothered to wipe anything down before painting. When we pointed it out that they painted over tile debris on the butler's shelves and on the window sills, they told us that it was the framing/drywall subcontractors to do the prepping and cleaning. After all the fiasco with those 2 subcontractors, Jeremiah also told us, "they are not my subcontractors, it''s Joey's.". They used Luma for the custom cabinets. There were visible black spots on the wood cabinets and we were told that it was "wood variations." I asked a woodworker who happened to be doing another work at our house what the black spots were and was told that the black spots were mold stains. The cabinets seams also were not caulked and there are visible spaces. The countertop people also used caulking that when I wiped down the counter at the seams, the caulking was not hard and was coming out like dried glue. When we pointed it out, the counter person was rude and said he used the right caulk. We also pointed out that the caulking at the tile seams were cracking in less than a month and his reply was that the crack was from all the other job that the other workers were doing. Other things in this job, materials such as pull baskets, shelves, finishing of crown molding put in without prior approval. Towards the end of the remodel, they replaced Jeremiah with Mike. Mike asked me and my husband, "how much can I pay you to not put a yelp review?" Mike also told us that Jeremiah had another job that was "going sideways." We were told by Joey when he was selling us their service and by Mike when he was trying to fix the mess that we will have a "perfect kitchen." Very far from "perfect" or acceptable workmanship from my expectation. We decided to cut our losses and end MBK service rather than having them come back and have them fix their substandard work as they made things worse every time they came back! Would not recommend this company even to my worse enemy!

Before...

We just finished our 7th job with Joey Dahan, the owner of MBK ... which was to complete our main bathroom. As you can see, it's exquisite: the quality, attention to detail, the overall design ... what's not to like? Since we started working with Joey 7 years ago, he and his crew have (literally) remodeled our entire house, a project at a time; the kitchen, both bathrooms, living room, dining room, main bedroom, two offices (my wife and I both work from home), and a den. The first thing Joey always does is to ask what ideas we have, then he works with us to achieve our vision. But he's also a top-notch designer, and incorporates some things we never thought of. For instance, my office had a standard 8-foot ceiling, but after he was finished, it has a soaring ceiling that slants upwards to 15-feet. He literally raised the roof! We then took that idea into the bedroom and raised the roof there. What an amazing transformation. We were knocked out, and so is everyone who sees it! But honestly, the incredible quality of his work aside, the best thing about working with Joey is ... you get to work with Joey! He's a total mensch (Yiddish word for "a man of integrity and honor"). I can't think of a better description, or a better person to trust with your home. Of course MBK handles all the technical details at the highest level of quality, that's what a remodel company should do. But we've never met a nicer, kinder, more caring person in the business than Joey. And he's become a good friend. Why would you possibly want to work with anyone else?

The work was on time, with what's up work meetings and excellent communications with my associates as the project proceeded. Best of all when there were problems Shelly helped fix everything including a day long final punch list inspection where every single detail was taken care of perfectly to my exacting satisfaction. Like any major…read moreproject, we started by reaching out to a couple of vendors to get quotes, that's where we met Alon, the project manager for Lumina Builders. What immediately stood out to us was that he had ideas and solutions to address our pain points and make enhancements, we wouldn't have ever considered, and didn't just wait for us to tell him how we wanted things. He created a vision for us in that first quote visit. The other contractor we spoke to didn't provide any ideas just asked us how we wanted it. It was a very easy decision to go with Alon and Lumina Builders. Our project was estimated to take 2-3 months and ultimately took two and a half months to complete. We designed a brand new kitchen, addressing all of our concerns and adding a few recommendations from Alon to streamline some areas. They ripped everything out aside from the flooring and walls. We got brand new custom cabinets, custom lighting, and new countertops. Our fridge was moved to a new, more accessible area. Our sink was shifted down to align with the stove for continuity sake (never realized how much I hated it being in a corner previously). We had a new little cabinet built in our little breakfast nook area and we had an appliance garage built to house everything that took up counter space. Everything is so much brighter and more open and, even though we know the demensions are roughly the same, it feels so much wider. We are ecstatic with how everything came out. Alon is a genius. He was responsive to us throughout the project, checking in weekly to see how things were going, giving us peace of mind throughout this process, as first time remodelers. We were indecisive about the primary cabinet color (I was very worried we'd be stuck with something we didn't really like) but he worked with the cabinet makes to give us several samples to choose from. He was very patient with us. We LOVE how everything turned out! We'll definitely be using Lumina Builders for all of our future projects.

We went with Forever Builders, who also did some demo for us when we first moved in. Among other things, we 1) stripped and replaced the floor, 2) demoed the built-in tub and replaced it with a soaking tub, 3) replaced the vanity countertops, 4) installed a chandelier and sconces, and 5) installed a custom shower door. Steve was our project manager for the entire project, which took 3-4 weeks. We are so incredibly pleased with the result, and just as happy with the service and professionalism we received from Steve and his team. Steve managed every aspect of this complex project flawlessly, stopped by frequently to check progress and QC each phase of work, and was consistently responsive and professional. He took my calls on nights and weekends, and I always felt taken care of and valued as an important customer--such a rare occurrence these days. The craftsmanship was flawless too. I am a detail-oriented person and tend to demand perfection, and Forever Builders exceeded my expectations. As a bonus, they also installed a floating vanity for me in a secondary bathroom, as a complimentary part of the project. Since then, I have also asked Steve and Forever Builders to patch up a huge portion of ceiling drywall at my mom's house that was screwed up by another company, and they did an amazing job with that as well. You will not find a more consistently exceptional company. I'm a customer for life.

We hired them to do an addition on our home in BayHo in late 2022 (you've probably seen it on their socials) Our first project manager Nathan was horrible. He never communicated and when he did he'd ensure something would get done, only for it to never materialize. Thankfully we were assigned to Ben when I said I was just cancelling the project all together. The company pushed us hard to hire their "engineer/architect" and BOY was that a mistake. The plans were horrific, the project was delayed and it wasn't until I reported him to the licensing authority and threatened litigation that he responded to the city's request for changes. We found out later that multiple requests we'd made for the plans (pocket doors, arched doorways, etc) were never included and thus couldn't be included without starting over. At this point our project was already delayed over three months. Once work did begin we were hopeful but the project was wrought with issues. One being a MASSIVE leak during construction into the current structure of our home. We had a newborn baby and were forced to move into a tiny part of our home during this. The entire side of the house was left open and exposed for weeks which was incredibly unsafe. The project ended up being completed and almost immediately had issues (not to mention a number of frustrating things during the build I don't even have space to discuss). Grout was disintegrating, cracks were forming all along the drywall, we'd notice issues with the flooring and tiling in the bathroom. Then during the storm in San Diego in 2023 the ENTIRE addition began to leak. Water was POURING in at every point it joined the existing structure. It's now been a month and still the damage hasn't been repaired. Work was supposed to begin 9/26 after two random men I'd never met showed up and walked into my bedroom through an exteriowithout knocking (on 9/22) to "check it out." At 1pm after contacting Dor (owner) and Ben (old project manager) we were told they'd "come tomorrow." So the entire day we took off to be here to supervise the moving of our very expensive light colored furniture I was point have every bit of communication from this company so please spare me the gaslighting response. Then- in early 2025 our sliding door began leaking. We contacted them and they said it was just a "caulking issue." They came and put silicone all around the door and left it at that. They didn't repaint or fix any of the interior damage from the leak. At the end of 2025 our drain in the shower stopped working. A plumber found no obstruction but said the drain wasn't installed properly, so we have to leave the drain cover off to use the shower. Absent tearing the shower out, there's no fix. Fast forward to today- what do you know? Another leak! This time, during the most recent rain, water began coming in where the addition meets the living room. No way I trust them to be honest, so I hired a licensed roofer. He came out and said where the addition meets the original home wasn't actually sealed (and assumed a roofer didn't actually do the work). They apparently put silicone gel down where the two roofs meet, instead of firing the roof and melting it together. We'll be seeking reimbursement for this repair or eventually filing a claim in small claims court. If it gets to that I'll probably be asking to have all the shoddy work repaired. I could never in good conscience recommend this company now. I'm disgusted by the lack of communication and poor workmanship. I honestly don't even trust them to repair their work at this point.

Review Update (2026)…read more I am updating my original 5-star review from a few years ago. At the time, we were very happy with our kitchen remodel and the overall experience working with Creative Design & Build. The project turned out beautifully, which is why I originally left such a positive review. Over the years, however, I noticed that one section of the flooring felt slightly soft when walking on it. At first, it did not seem serious, so we continued to live with it. Recently, the problem became worse and a section of the floor began to noticeably sink when stepped on and eventually a few edges of the flooring broke. At that point, I became concerned that it could become a safety issue. Because we still had plenty of spare flooring boards left over from the project, I attempted to replace the affected board myself. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the new board to fit correctly due to the locking system, and I could not restore the original board either. I then contacted Creative Design & Build for assistance. One reason I reached out was because our original project manager, Oded, had told us that if we ever had any issues, we should contact the company. I left a voicemail and later received a return call from a staff member. After I explained the situation, she said she would check with management and get back to me. A few days later, I received a text message stating that the warranty had expired and that no repairs would be covered. This was disappointing because I had never been informed that there was a four-year warranty period, nor was I able to find any reference to such a limitation in our contract. When I asked for details regarding the warranty and whether they could recommend someone to repair the issue, I did not receive any further response. There were two other issues relating to electrical and plumbing, however we decided to live with that until we had a major problem we needed fixing. I still appreciate the work that was done on our remodel years ago, and our kitchen remains a space we enjoy. However, I have been disappointed by the lack of follow-up and support when a problem arose. My advice to future customers is to make sure all warranty terms, coverage details, and expiration dates are clearly documented and understood before signing a contract.
