Honestly, ignore all poor reviews because Mazatlan has been top tier Mexican food for soooo long. Their salsa is best I've had (spent many years in Portland, Eugene, and currently live in Seattle) hands down. My go to is chicken enchiladas which is always a safe bet. Carne asada is also great. Truly do not think the overall stars accurately represent how good Mazatlan is. You don't go for the service, you go for the food! read more

We love Mazatlan restaurants! Not sure if this one is part of the chain from our side of the Cascades, but it was very delicious meal! Came in after enjoying the Penelton Round up We were hungry and thirsty!! We got great service!! Our drinks were brought right away. As was our chips/ salsa. The chips were good. Not warm, but good. The salsa was nicely flavored, with big fresh chunks of onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. The only downside is the tiny cups they serve it in. The michalada was tasty- no complaints there!! The burrito was mostly all rice, 2 little bites of chicken, and not much bean in It either. Also there was a strange bitter taste to the whole burrito. read more

I ordered delivery through an online service. I'm always a little apprehensive about ordering from a place I haven't seen and the 3 stars wasn't comforting, either. Still, I didn't feel like going out and having Taco Bell delivered didn't make sense. (I avoid most national chains and like to support local). So......tried a shredded beef chimichanga with a taco, rice and beans. I got chicken!! Okay, before I started to eat I was going to give a 3 for the error. But, having finished the meal, I felt it was a 4 because the food was very delicious. Only other thing was the chips (not homemade) were served with just two little cups of salsa. This is a very nicely decorated restaurant that has a pretty good menu, but it fell just a bit short on food and service. We were seated quickly and chips with salsa were brought to the table. The salsa was very good with a nice bite and flavor. Our server took our order, and, just really had no personality at all. The food came out and my chicken mole was sweet and spicy as advertised in the menu. My wife's fajitas, though, also had a sweet flavor which is not what we expected from that dish. Amazing food and service! They're always busy, so be ready for a little bit of a wait. We have been satisfied with everything we have tried on the menu. They're able to modify dishes to accommodate dietary needs such as non-dairy, vegetarian, etc. Favorite dishes are the tacos al carbon, arroz con pollo, and deluxe burrito manadero. Be sure to order some chips and salsa to take home! A 16oz cup of salsa is only $3 and a grocery bag size of chips is only $3! read more

I'm very surprised. I used to go to this place a lot back in the day but haven't for a while. I went this evening and to my surprise the service was less than acceptable and the food and drink quality was very poor. We also felt very rushed to be done by staff. They never came to check on us and while we were still eating the waiter asked if we needed a box and brought our ticket way too soon. Literally they turned off the light above us before we were done eating. They weren't closing for another 45 min. We left our money on the table and left with not tip given. As we were walking out no one said thanks and they turned off all the lights right behind us. Very poor service and no good food...we won't be back unless we hear they change things!! read more

Can't say I would eat here again. Reviews are accurate. The two ladies working have zero personality. My husband asked which of two dishes was better & she looked annoyed & shrugged her shoulders. Food is a 1 star in my opinion. Ground beef tacos were very cafeteria style. Fajitas do have a very sweet flavor (maybe bbq or brown sugar?) The chips & salsa were the highlight. You get what you pay for, it was very inexpensive. The restaurant is cute & looks like it would be authentic. The only male waiter whom brought our food & drink refills was great! Should have heeded the advice from previous Yelpers as they were spot on. The waitress (probably the owner's wife) seemed as though she would rather have been at the dentist... flat, unexcited, I watched her walk away from a table while the customers were still speaking to her. Service speed was fine and she did actually offer to refill our salsa. The best part about the food was the price, $5 for a lunch combo plate is great deal. Other than the rice however, everything they served was Old El Paso straight from the can. Absolutely nothing homemade, authentic, or containing character. I guess on the plus side, that makes it pretty hard to mess up. What they do do right is the decor and signage. Lots of color and well done graphics shows that they are skilled in at least one area. Although the lunch experience wasn't horrible, I likely won't patronize this establishment again. We loved the restaurant's decorations and overall feel; the male waiter was friendly; the drinks and food were served timely; the orchata & margarita were VERY tasty; and the food was decent (he was happier with the high quality ground beef in his meal than I was with the vegetarian burrito.) Interestingly, though, we were not checked on once during our meal, and he was offered a refill on his margarita AFTER I was already packing items in the to go boxes. We had dinner here the other night while going through town. The atmosphere is nice-- Lots of Mexican tile and folk crafts decorate the walls, booths, tables, etc. I had carne asada, which was excellent. It was skirt steak (arrachera), as it should be, and it was very tasty. The rice and bean sides were also tasty. My dining partner had a burrito, and he really liked it. My margarita was very okay-- Tequila and sweet/sour. Not home made. Too bad. I would come back for the food and friendly (quick service). I had a losing session of poker at the Wildhorse Casino. I wanted to leave the property, not eat dinner on the premises. So I asked the dealer if he could recommend a good Mexican restaurant. He suggested this place. I was not disappointed. I ordered the carne asada with a Bohemia beer. I received my beer, icy cold, promptly, with a bowl of crisp tortilla chips and surprising spicy salsa. I ate too much of it. They brought my carne asada. A huge portion of skirt stake, well grilled, refried beans with cheese, dirty rice, two large grilled jalapenos that were especially spicy, and a covered plate of four steamed corn tortillas. Everything was well presented, tasty, hot, and just what I needed. They even left me a pitcher of water -- knowing I guess that I like lots of water with dinner. Lunches were $7 or less, many $5, and very large portions. Try the chicken chimichanga. My friend said the enchilada verde sauce was not so great. I've been visiting Pendleton regularly for work the past few months. I've been to Mazatlan twice. The first time was fabulous. The food was fabulous, the margaritas were spectacular. It was a 5-star experience. The second time was pretty mediocre. The margarita was warm-ish and weak. The food was just "ok". The homemade salsa that comes with the chips in the beginning are great. I have always eaten at Mazatlan when I make it to Pendleton and the place was packed. Unfortunately it was the worst service and food I have ever had there. The waitress could not seem to understand how I wanted my tickets seperated, she breezed through the orders and we had to almost butt in to be allowed to order a drink which was then forgotten and we had to flag her down to ask for it. One of the people in my party never did get the coffee they ordered. The food was not good at all, it was flavorless, the portions were small and it wasn't even that hot. Staff is friendly, plenty of parking, located in a convenient location, and most of the time the food is great! The quality of the food varies dramatically. Often forgetting key ingredients and serving stale food. The restaurant is so loud. It must be the acoustics of the building. Forget calling in to order dinner, you'll have to scream to be heard, which results regularly in confusion and wrong orders. Note to management: move your phone out of the dining area! read more

Mazatlan seemed to be fairly clean. I asked for guacamole without tomatoes and peppers, which our waiter did serve fairly soon. The service was poor. Our waiter didn't check back until I was almost finished with my dinner. I ordered #1 (one enchilada and two tacos) Chicken. I was served two chicken enchiladas and two beef tacos. When I explained to the waiter, he said "oh", and very soon brought me chicken tacos. The table of 4 next to us complained they had been there an hour and had not received their food. Probably the worst mexican restaurant in town. It was super busy the night we were there, a Thursday night but the service was awful. My husband had to ask multiple times to refill his soda; servers seemed to wander around the restaurant without looking to assist anyone. The food was mediocre at best. I get to Pendleton once a year but my husband always remembers how good the food was at this Mexican restaurant. It was recommended by a friend in La Grande. The portion of food was quite a bit, always good and it is very reasonable. I had to laugh at 2 of the YELP reviews I found because I'm pretty sure I got the same waitress they did since their description of her fit the bill. She served us well but if I asked an out of the ordinary question, she would not even answer me leaving me wondering what to do next. Otherwise, she provided excellent service without a smile or thank you. I am guessing that it is a language or cultural barrier. We finally did get a reaction from her when we said goodbye and thank you. She seemed surprise and replied with a friendly goodbye. read more

Pendleton has a weirdly disappointing Mexican restaurant selection. Of the few we have, this is my favorite. It's not very authentic but they have a great selection (I rarely see fish tacos at this sort of establishment, but they've got them and they're good!), decent salsa, and the food is tasty. If you're driving down I-84, I recommend you go to Hermiston, or El Eraderro in Stanfield. If you want something authentic and aren't set on a sit-down restaurant, go to the food truck on the south side of the Boardman exit (by Subway), their burritos are the real deal. read more
