I came here early on a Friday morning to grab some pastries that I've heard so much about! The girl behind the counter was incredibly friendly and I told her it was my first time in so she gave me the run down of how everything worked in terms of special items, etc. I landed on 2 chocolate croissants, 1 blueberry brioche danish, 1 butter croissant, a banana puff pastry (weekly special), and an orange and cranberry scone. I will say I came in specifically for the chocolate croissant. While it was very good, it was still slightly dry. The scone, butter croissant and the bananas foster puff pastry were phenomenal. The blueberry brioche danish missed the mark. It was far too dense. I walked away with a London fog as well which was delicious! Will return for sure, but it's a bit out of the way, so I hope they put a location in Chesapeake! read more

Wednesday 8/14/2024 I first visited this spot last year in July to get the cinnamon rolls but by the time I arrrived they were all sold out. This time I made sure to get up early so I could finally try it. The service was kind and helpful. I got the cinnamon bun $5 and the choclate crinkle $2.95. - The cinnamon bun was pretty good: it was soft and the ingredients were balanced well. I did expect it to be a bit bigger based on price tag and previous yelp photos I had seen but I'd say it's still worth it. - The chocolate crinkle was recommended by the worker so I got it and it ended up being alright but I've had many better. All in all, my experience at mays parlor was solid and I would definitely recommend that cinnamon bun if you are ever in the mood for one. read more

I rarely find myself in Norfolk, but as luck would have it, I had to run an errand in the area last week. It'd been a while since my last visit to the Oceanfront location and I'd never been to this one, so it was a prime opportunity to indulge in May's delights. I'd not had my caffeine fix for the day, so we started with a couple of lattes, perfect for the chilly weather day. The hubs and I had a couple of sandwiches for lunch - he the Ham & Brie and I the Turkey Bacon Pesto. He enjoyed his sandwich. As for me? I wanted to have 10 of mine; it was so damn good. It had the perfect balance of all the ingredients. I swear I could eat that sandwich every day and never get sick of it. Of course, we couldn't leave without a box of goodies that included a cruffin (I HAD to have) and a few other sweets from the cases. It wasn't an obscene amount, but it took a few days to eat it all, nonetheless. The standout for me was the s'mores cheesecake. It was light yet rich in flavor, which is a bonus for me since I'm not a fan of super heavy desserts these days. The service was super friendly and attentive. I happened to be in Downtown Norfolk last week and had tried to go to The Bakehouse Chelsea but they were not open at the time, so I realized that May's Parlor was now in Norfolk and decided to head there. This location is so cute, though I was not able to enjoy it at this time as I had to get back to work. I got a Blueberry Brioche danish and Baklava Cruffin. I would have bought all the pastries if I could, they all looked so good. The Blueberry Brioche danish is my favorite. So soft and all the blueberry on it was sweet and delish as always. The Baklava cruffin intrigued me so I had to get this. It had Honeycomb candy on top and was filled with a Pistachio flavored cream. This was really good as I love pistachio and that cream was everything. I'm not sure if it reminded me of Baklava but I am not complaining as it was unique and flavorful. So excited to have May's in Norfolk now! We popped in for breakfast on a Thursday morning. Our table got a couple of different sandwiches (including the BEC which happens to be one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches of all time!), a cinnamon bun, a chocolate almond Croissant, and a couple of Cranberry Limeades. Everything was delicious! The cinnamon buns are a little flakey and Croissant like on the outside but with a soft doughy center like a traditional cinnamon roll. Their menu is slightly more limited on lunch selections as they don't have a full kitchen, but the breakfast offerings are all available, from quiche to sandwiches to pastries and coffee. Finally got to try it. Everything we ordered was delicious! We love chocolate so we fell in love with their strawberry dipped chocolate pie & almond chocolate croissant! The real chocolate's richness was truly addicting. I always get disappointed when chocolate tastes light and sugary. So these were nothing like that. We also got their soft, dense, but not too salty spinach and artichoke quiche. Very filling and satisfying! Also got the corned beef danish. We were skeptical at first because it looked a bit dried up but it tasted delicious & quite moist. The only one that I personally was not a fan of was the Irish cream cruffin but hubby liked it. I've been to the May's Parlor at the oceanfront but this morning was my first time checking out the Norfolk location. I was pleasantly surprised to find parking close by. The building was also easy to spot from the street. There is a pastry case FULL of goodness when you walk in the door. They take pastry orders there and drink orders a little further down at the register. I chose a twice-baked almond croissant, pain au chocolat, and blueberry brioche danish. I also ordered a drip coffee with cream and sugar. The pastries tasted as good as they looked. Both croissants were flaky and you could see the lovely lamination in the crust. The almond filling tasted a bit different than I expected but still good. I warmed up the pain au chocolat in my microwave for about 15 seconds and the chocolate got warm and melty and perfect. My husband enjoyed the danish! I'm taking off one star because the coffee was just not very yummy. It's hard to find a coffee place with great pastries but this one has the opposite problem. Finally! Waited for a friend to try this newest location of May's in Norfolk. Huge longtime fan of May's and happy to see such success and expansion into this cute part of Norfolk for Racheal. Plenty of available parking as it shares a lot with Mermaid Winery and several other commercial stores. So I love the location because you can come for a weekend or week day and park, shop, eat, walk around and enjoy this part of Norfolk. I recognized some familiar faces inside from the beachfront and saw nearly all of the same menu and great items. Some of the specials and other items are only going to be available at the beachfront. So if you are a long-time person used to going there, some things are a bit different but the basics and major stuff you'll still be able to get here. Same great taste. It's larger inside with a tiny bit more seating and tables the cute lemon decor is the same and the color scheme remains on theme. My friend and I chose a few baked goodies, of course, some cookies to go for my husband, and the quiche and veggie breakfast sandwich served on that amazing everything brioche bun. Adorable! I had no clue that a May's Parlor was in Ghent until I saw it pop up on my instagram feed. I immediately went the next day. No wonder I didn't know it was here, it's definitely tucked back in a shopping center between W 22nd and 23rd St. There was plenty of parking, but we had walked the dog so no need. Food- 5/5 hands down. We order the Quiche of the day, pain au chocolate, BEC, and two drinks (iced coffee and hot chai). Two major stars were the BEC and pain au chocolate. BEC had bacon, egg frittata, and a white cheddar with a garlic aioli on the best brioche I've had in a long time. They were very busy at 10:30am when we arrived, so the staff seemed slightly overwhelmed but handled it fairly well. The inside was adorable, only about 5 tables indoors and another 6 outside. But it was well decorated, and smelled SO GOOD. Happy Norfolk finally has an amazing pastry shop that isn't a pain to park/ walk to! Thank you! read more

May's Parlor is now in Norfolk! I am so thankful for this because it shaves off a good 10-15 minutes from my drive! I have been to their location by the ocean front only once and it's a bit of a drive for me. The drive is definitely worth it, but this makes it that much easier to make a trip to pick up some of their delicious treats! I've been meaning to check out this new location but time has gotten away from me (how is it almost Thanksgiving?!). Yesterday, I saw a pic of their chocolate ganache cruffin flash before my eyes on my phone screen and you best believe I ran there today. That is just the push I needed to make the trip and check out the new location! I LOVE croissants and I LOVE chocolate ganache so you don't need to tell me twice! - Parking - It's located in a center of shops, so there is parking, but limited (and tight!) - Vibe - The interior is similar to its sister location with bright pastel colors and the lemon wallpaper. - Noms - My haul included: + chocolate ganache cruffins: ugh, HEAVEN! The middle is filled with custard and the cruffin is shaped like a muffin with the top dipped in chocolate ganache. So good! The cruffin part was airy, lots of layers and the custard was so good and the layer of chocolate ganache just added that extra decadence. +cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting - this is hearty and a generous size + blueberry scone - this one is a bit harder than I'm used to, but delicious nonetheless. I LOVE scone too! +blueberry danish - also delicious with blueberry middle, crumb topping and dusted with icing sugar - peanut butter mousse bar - I'm saving this one for later and haven't had a bite yet, but if the other items are any indication, it will be good! I hope my husband doesn't get to it first.... Just a note: - Cruffin flavors, in this case, chocolate ganache, is only available this week. Hence, my hauling butt there today so I could snag some! I think they do this with most cruffin flavors. They change up the flavors to keep you guessing! - I've had their pie packs at the VB location and inquired about it today, but the staff informed me that that is a special thing for PI day and only available for pre-order. If I remember correctly, last time, at the VB location, I just bought a pie with one slice of each, but paid regular price for each slice, no discount was offered since it wasn't pre-ordered. Getting a pie with different flavors is the way to go and the pie slices are not small, so look out for their pie pre-order opportunities. - They also have outdoor seating - they have 3 locations: 1 by ocean front in VB, a commercial kitchen in VB that I believe serves as their main working space and sometimes can be the pick up location for pre-orders and now the one in Norfolk! Love seeing businesses expand! Overall, they offer damn good homemade goods with touch of sophistication. Their treats are quite generous in size and the quality and the details of their craft is top notch! Definitely one of my top fave bakeries in the area! I've never not liked anything there. I had to write a review for the Norfolk location finally! I usually go to the OG location, but I actually love this newer one as it's by my house and has about the same items/it not exactly the same hahah. I love love LOVE this place. It's always so clean, neat, and very friendly! They have an amazing assortment of pastries and lunch items! Today I got the Christmas weekly item which is Grinch croissants that are "ROAST BEAST", which are roast beef filled croissant Christmas trees lathered in garlic butter. I am so obsessed and wish I would have gotten more. This place is very easy to go in and get a quick bite. They have a few sit down tables where you can enjoy right there as well. It fits a decent amount of people going in for a quick bite! I can't say how much I love Mays Parlor and enjoy how well they pay attention to detail with their food. After months of salivating over Instagram photos of their indulgent cruffins and delicate macaroons, I had to satisfy my sweet tooth. To celebrate the 12 days of Christmas, May's was offering 50% off everything in their pastry case during select hours (12-2) the day I went. My lucky day! The case was lined with beautifully crafted pastries, breads, muffins, and quiches, as well as full-sized cakes and other goodies available for take-home (perfect for entertaining!). If you're in the mood for something savory, the menu boasts a handful of heart breakfast sandwiches and a plethora of coffee, tea, and other refreshments. My husband and I opted for a plain croissant, everything croissant, and apple crumble scone. If it wasn't so chilly outside, we would have opted to enjoy our pastries at one of their patio tables. The new Norfolk location of May's Parlor, an artisan bakery cafe that originated in Virginia Beach, became open for business three weeks ago on the date of July 2nd. It is tucked away in the back of the Palace Shops and Station on 22nd Street and is next door to 350 Grace, a highly rated southern restaurant. It took over the former site of Just Cupcakes, which closed earlier this year. The original Virginia Beach location opened on Pacific Avenue at the Oceanfront in July of 2017. It is owned by Racheal Browning, a Chesapeake native who became trained as a French pastry chef in New York City. Her journey led her back to the area to open May's Parlor. The interior is brimming with natural light and soft pastel color schemes that are easy on the eyes. There are four indoor tables with seating enough for 12 customers. Additional seating is available from outdoor patio areas in the front and by the side of the building. The Norfolk location does not have an actual kitchen at this time. Lunch items are only available from a grab and go refrigerator. Their baked goods are prepared at their wholesale production facility on Holland Road in Virginia Beach. Two overhead menus are erected high above and behind their counter. One is for their Breakfast Bites, and the other is for their Drinks, which includes their Coffees and Teas. I have enjoyed the following from their overhead menus to date: QUICHE DU JOUR: I was given two choices and went with their Spinach and Artichoke Quiche. It delivered an elegantly light and fluffy texture. The flavors of the spinach and artichoke were truly sublime. I've never enjoyed a better quiche. My Rating: 5 Stars. SMOKED SALMON SANDWICH: Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Capers, and Red Onion on an Everything Croissant. The combination of flavors and textures provided a pleasant and filling breakfast bite. The smokiness of the salmon came through nicely. The croissant was crunchy and tasty. A few more capers and red onions would have been desired. My Rating: 4 Stars. CHIA PARFAIT: This is a creative combination of house made granola, berry compote, blueberries, strawberries, and chia seeds immersed in plain Greek yogurt. All the flavors came through nicely. If I could tweak the recipe a bit, it would be to toast the granola just a little less. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. FRESH MINT LEMONADE: This has been my beverage of choice so far. Light and refreshing, it has hit the spot nicely during these hot summer days. A stronger taste of mint would be desired, perhaps with the addition of a fresh mint leaf. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. I have enjoyed the following from their display case: BLUEBERRY BRIOCHE DANISH: This was an awesome and filling pastry with a texture that melted in my mouth while oozing with flavor. The blueberry filling was truly orgasmic. My Rating: 5 Stars. S'MORES BAR: This was an eye popping treat that was topped with an amazing marshmallow goodness, beautifully swirled and layered over a light, elegant, and decadently delicious chocolate mousse filling. My Rating 5 Stars. CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY MOUSSE TARTLET: This one is my favorite to date. Its construction was an artistic masterpiece and a thing of beauty. The strawberries played well with the chocolate mousse, which again was decadently delicious. My Rating: 5-Plus Stars. The new Norfolk location is still a work in progress and fine tuning its operation. New items and special additions can be expected in the near future. A friend of mine who is a culinary arts instructor highly recommends their Chicken Pot Pie, which I will be sure to try during a future visit. Their Apple Pie also comes highly recommended, which is a seasonal item that becomes available in the fall. The new Norfolk location has scored well enough with my palate so far to earn an enthusiastic 5-star rating. Enjoy the patio tables out front or indoor seating. I've been to May's once before to the VB location! This one is just what the area needs. From the deliciously fresh pastry options, coffee and tea, breakfast, and lunch options you really can't go wrong either way. I'd recommend the orange chocolate chip scone! The iced mocha's are also a good. There really are so many options to choose from. My pup even enjoyed the patio. The service was welcoming and friendly. The ambiance is chill as well. Both of which were delicious and unlike something you'd find elsewhere. We took home our pastries and the almond croissant was delicious and had a filling. I would say I was largely disappointed by the blueberry scone as it was, although dark in color, baked to perfection but then coated with a very sugary glaze, and not accompanied by any traditional accoutrements such as jam and clotted cream. A great place for baked goods! We tried May's Parlor on our way home from dance one day! There are so many great options! We got two bacon and egg sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, a cake pop, and a blueberry scone! Everything was delicious, however the scone wasn't what I was expecting so probably my least favorite of the bunch! The service was excellent and very streamlined which is great because there was always a line! However, inside the restaurant is small and not too easy to maneuver in or out of the door. So happy for the delicious Oceanfront's May's Parlor to come to Norfolk! The parlor is very cutely decorated and has a sunny ambience. The pastries and assorted offerings of the day are attractively laid out for you to feast your eyes on as you walk in. They have many options from treats to light lunches and brunch fare. I had a drip coffee when I went and it was great! I will try fancier coffee next visit. We had the quiche of the day (bacon, cheddar and chive) which was SO FLUFFY. I am not sure how they get quiche that fluffy and light. The flavors were just right and the flavors worked well together. My pastry was the twice baked chocolate and almond croissant. The twice baked makes it just a little crunchy to contrast with the soft almond filling. It was perfect, not too sweet but just sweet enough. The almond croissant my partner got was equally delicious. Attentive staff were going around to check tables and clear dishes as needed when no one was in line, keeping the parlor tidy. The only thing I could comment on was the table was a bit shaky and it caused us to spill our coffee a few times. Other than that, I cannot wait to come back again!
