Second time this week I've ordered from this restaurant. It was even more delicious this time around. I purposely got way too much food so I could meal prep for the next several days. Check out this picture. This is some of the best takeout I've had since we moved here five years ago. Nice job, guys!

Amazing take-out from Maya's kitchen today. We ordered by phone and arrived just before it was done so had a few minutes to check out the restaurant space. It's a counter order arrangement, but with several comfortable looking tables, including a couple of nice window spots. I would definitely plan to eat in in the future. For entrees we had beef and okra stew, goat, and jerk chicken. All were great, with the jerk chicken both wonderfully flavored and tender, the goat well balanced and the stew the perfect level of spicy. We each got two sides, with various combinations of plantains, collard greens, and beans. The collard greens were especially excellent, cooked to the right level of tender and well seasoned. They were out of a few things so if you are craving something very specific maybe call ahead, but it's all good so you really can't go wrong. If ordering the same again, I might get the rice or fufu with the stew next time, and I definitely want to try the Jamaican rum cake.

Had the Goat for lunch, delicious! Excellent sauce with chunks of meat, some still on the bone - enhanced flavor. Collards and a very cheesy Mac added to the meal. Each order prepared for you, may want to call ahead, took about 10 minutes, but worth the wait. Meals come with 2 sides. A lower cost lunch choice ( ask for it) comes with a choice of rice as side. Small bar and 4 tables offer comfortable seating options. I'm ready to try other dishes.

Mayas kitchen was delicious! The spicy rice had heat, but just the right amount. The jerk chicken fell off the bone! Lastly, the collard greens made this southern girl happy- perfectly cooked and seasoned.

Maya's Kitchen opened recently in Downtown Manchester, in the former Queen City Cupcakes (they moved a few doors away) on Elm Street. This cozy eatery serves up African Caribbean cuisine offering a variety of meat entrees served with sides including oxtail stew, jerk chicken, baked chicken, curry chicken, BBQ ribs, cow's feet, spicy okra beef stew, and goat meat. The prices here (in 2023) are in the $15.99 to $24.99 plus tax range. There are a few tables and counter seating and they offer eat in and takeout. I stopped by Maya's Kitchen for takeout. I ordered the Spicy Okra Beef Stew ($19.99 plus tax) served with two side choices (I chose spicy rice and macaroni & cheese). I enjoyed my takeout dinner outside on a nice day. The portion of food was just right. The okra beef stew was pretty spicy tasting as billed with soft okra and soft tender pieces of stewed beef. The homemade macaroni & cheese was rich and filling. Overall, the food I had was excellent and spicy tasting. I would definitely get this spicy okra beef stew again, but I would try the other things on the menu too such as the baked chicken and BBQ ribs with collard greens and baked beans.

SO good! I stopped by for takeout while in town for work. The jerk chicken, Mac n cheese, and collards were served hot and delicious. The chicken was fall off the bone and flavorful. So much food, I couldn't finish it all. Delicious soul food that made my stomach warm and cozy.

Why has no one talked about this place?!! Are the Manchester folks gate keeping?! This has to be the best Caribbean oxtail I have ever had!!

Went in for dinner and the inside is very cozy ! The food was very delicious. The beef stew was so tender in the okra beef stew and the jerk chicken was flavorful. Collard greens were good and you can tell it was made with love and care. The woman inside was very friendly also!

I tend to do this when trying new places so I can figure out what I like, so I am use to waiting a bit. The food was really good and flavorful. The oxtails were so tender and the plantains so sweet. I was really excited about going back and I told a lot of people about this place. Unfortunately, it has been downhill every since. First they are never open on time. I have gone +40 mins after opening and the door was locked. I could see a woman unloading food but she did not acknowledge me. I have called +2 hours after opening and no answer. When I did finally manage to get ahold of someone, the food was cold and they changed the plantain style. Now they use large plantains that are not sweet. They are just dry and flavorless. I was ok with this since the portion size was still good and the other food still had good flavor. The last straw was when I ordered my food in person and I told guy #1 exactly what I wanted. I even got extra oxtail gravy for the rice. I waited about 15 mins for my food and I watched guy #1 finish packing my food. Well guy #2 was obviously upset with the amount of food guy #1 made for me so he made a scene. Even though he was speaking another language I could tell he was talking about me since he kept gesturing to me. They put my original food in a storage cabinet and guy #2 proceeded to remake my food. He put 1 oxtail, no gravy, and added a small amount of sides. This took another 10 mins. I was amazed at what I was watching. Guy #2 hands me the new food and smiles at me. Like I didn't just witnessed what happened. I try to support small places like this especially in this region but after that experience... I will likely never go back. I suggest you order your food ahead of time and avoid the wait and subpar service. Happy Hunting Yelpers!

We arrived a little less than an hour before closing time but we were still happily served. Let me be clear, this is a Ugandan restaurant. Okay, moving on. Our food came out, steaming hot and fresh- nothing seemed like it was reheated (try eating reheated posho y'all). We stayed long after the restaurant was closed to finish our food which really gave me the real homey Ugandan vibes. There were also a bunch of Ugandan uncles in the corner just chatting it up the entire time which was fun. Also, there's a store with Ugandan products, raw frozen cassava/matooke, bitenge, and some other Ugandan staples like Royco, Blueband, Majaani, etc!

I can see from the reviews that some people are expecting a smooth assembly line operation like you might expect if you were eating at a cafeteria in Den Bosch in the Netherlands--which I've done. This ain't that. But bring your patience and adaptability and a smile and you'll be rewarded with a hearty country meal East African style. If you want anything spicy ask for it. In the 3rd world in my experience my Anglo looks meant they leave out the spiciness unless you ask otherwise. The vibe is like a Ugandan version of a British village pub full of locals socializing. If you want to meet every Ugandan expat in the Boston area, come on by. But while most of the people were Ugandan we obvious non-Ugandans were greeted with open arms. We asked them to just bring us dinner, and so they did. One interesting thing was the Indian influence--Uganda had had a large Indian community there until Idi Amin appropriated everything they had and kicked them out of the country. I guess some? many? have returned since Idi Amin was kicked out himself. So among the more obviously indigenous chicken stew and cooked plantains as a major starch was samosas and chapatis, much as you'd expect to find in an Indian restaurant. Portions were so big I got two and a half additional meals out of it. I've tried a lot of cuisines--I live in the SF Bay Area which is one of the most multicultural places on Earth--so for me this wasn't all that exotic. Ethiopian food is a lot moreso and a lot hotter, for example. So someone who's only mildly adventurous should do fine here. Actually Cajun cooking from Louisiana is more exotic, frankly. And hotter. And there's nothing on Karubu's menu like that Gulf Cajun fave "Bucket of Mud Bugs" (crawfish). Both my wife and our local friend who dined with us enjoyed our meal, and I look forward to returning on our next trip to Greater Boston. Interestingly both one of our Uber drivers and the night clerk at our hotel were Ugandan and familiar with Karibu and very pleased that we planned to dine there. A lot of the infrastructure people we deal with as we travel are really very interesting people if you talk with them and don't just treat them like they're invisible. And it can make your travels more interesting than just going somewhere and doing the standard tourist things.

The portions are generous and the food is wonderfully spicy. The restaurant is very loud as they play music on a sizable PA system in a relatively small space. I would not recommend eating in for anyone with auditory sensory processing differences. That said, if you're going to eat here, pay cash or go somewhere else. In our last visit (October 2024), my credit card was triple billed for our meal. The staff told us that it was a problem with Square. Cool. I've dealt with Square. Square can be a pain, I get it. Sadly, that was the start of the problem, not its resolution. The receipt they sent me was a completely different order (literally nothing we ordered was on the receipt, the the receipt was for almost twice the cost of our meal). The staff said they'd fix it. Cool. We'll wait. However, after waiting 20 minutes or so for this to be resolved, the staff told us that they were unwilling to wait on hold any longer and that they would follow up the next day. I never got a call. Two days later, I called to follow up as the charges had only been partially reversed. When I called the number staff gave me for follow up, they told me my refund was processed. Looking at my credit card statement, it most definitely was not. They refunded a partial and seemingly random amount, leaving them still having overcharged me by more than $60. The staff person I spoke to, who assured me that they would be available on Monday, said they were too busy to talk and would call me back. They did not call me back. The staff person I have been in contact with has been consistently argumentative. I have consistently been made to feel that I am the problem and am an inconvenience for insisting on accurate, timely correction of the charges. I don't care how good the fried plantains are (and they're really good), they're not worth this much headache. I'll not be going back.

My food was ready to go in about 15 minutes. The boxed dinner had a dense balled cornmeal (slight salt flavor) served with fried croaker fish with bones with shredded onion, and pepper on the side and hot & mild sauces on the side. The hot flaky fish needed to be carefully deboned before enjoying. The sauces were great with my food and with the Banku, the dinner was filling to eat.
