We were in the vicinity of this establishment for other reasons, but we were hungry and decided to give it a try. It was pretty busy on this early Sunday afternoon, with some folks attracted to the NFL games shown on the wide-screen TV. Nonetheless, there was a good table available for us. Service was excellent from the time we entered. We ordered the Sunday special: Eggs Benedict, which we split. It was very good. Our waiter was very friendly! DH gambled a dollar at a gaming machine, but no luck. (It would have been my mom's 107th birthday, and this is something I know DH enjoys doing. I told him to make a deposit, since I lighted a candle at a downtown church). Probably it's the gambling and alcohol sales keeping the food prices low. First time at Maxwell's. Went to try their Chicago style Beef sandwich. I grew up in Chicago and have had many a Carm's beef sandwiches in my day. Sorry, but this rendition of a Carm's beef sandwitch didn't come close. The ambiance of the place is interesting and the wait staff are very good, with the exception of the waiter taking our order. The homemade fries, which are usually a plus, were oily and tasted like the grease hadn't been changed in a while. The service was about what you'd expect at a pub--adequate, but nothing noteworthy. Having lived in the area for awhile, we finally decided to check it out. It's your local neighborhood bar that looks to be managed by a family. The food here is pretty inexpensive and actually good...well at least the stuffed we ordered. We ordered a chicken fried steak, Reuben sandwich and cheese fries. The chicken fried steak was cooked appropriately and tasted good. The Reuben was not bad, the sourkraut was a bit strong, and the cheese fries were good (assuming that you like the cheese sauce) The service could be faster, but the place was kinda busy and they only had two people working and also making drinks. One word: Scary. At first entrance it looked ok. Lots of specials and a diverse menu. 3 minutes in a gentleman came for the drink orders and came back quickly with the drinks. Then it fell apart. He said he would be back for our order.... never happened. While we waited for him a couple of really rough looking fella's came from the back area, one carrying a big black duffle bag. Not something you see everyday. The booth behind my wife was filled with 3 men and one women. They were deep in comparisons to what cable channels you get in prison. They were at capacity, I get that and my family couldn't come in. How were we supposed to know if there isn't a sign? They would usually tell us upon entering right? Wrong, they literally just shooed us away with no context AFTER WE ORDERED. I had to ask why were we refused? They said our party of 5 was too big and they were at capacity. Sure, many are super Trumpy anti vaxxers, but many more are methed out, and try to fight everyone, for absurd, trashy drama. Well, had to go in here today after I found out it was a 30 minute wait at Toshi's. I was not impressed with thier food at all. My DH ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and I ordered the potato skins which were gross! They were too full of grease and they did not taste good. DH ordred a salad too which was also did not taste good the lettuce was wilted etc. Overall, the food value was poor, the drink however was not and I was quite pleased with that. I had a Monopolova on the rocks with a lemon.. was decent. That is always what I order. I wasn't happy to eat lunch here for sure. I don't mind drinks here or just bellying up to the bar, but food is marginal at best. I was glad they had IPA tap for the DH, some of the places we have been visting lately haven't been to keen on the beer scene. Like I said for drinks only and I'll be back. This used to be our favorite restaurant. Since Walt retired the atmosphere just isnt the same. Recently my husband and I went in and two new waitresses were doing their best, it was busy My complaint is how my husband was treated when the waitress came over and said his card declined We knew it was not true, because he just used his card at the cash machine and we are not worried about our balance. Its how she suddenly started treating him. Instead of even making an attempt at being tactful, she said, your card declined and I need another form of payment. My husband said thats not possible, something just went wrong, try again. She abruptly said, no it declined come look. In which case he got up and walked over forgetting his mask in the stress of the situation. The other waitress walks up and admonishes him for not having his mask, loudly and with much contempt says I WILL GET YOU ONE. shoot, its 5 feet to our table. You know, this could of been handled with finesse and respect. Totally wrong to make repeat customers made to feel like dirtbags. Really angered about this and will LOUDLY tell everyone. First time there last night. Very impressed. Service was great . Food was amazing. Cheap!!!!! My husband had an Italian sandwich I think it was meatball. He said it was so good, and he's kinda picky. The fries were obviously hand made by them YUM! I had the California steak sandwich with a side salad. It literally melted in my mouth. The salad was perfect as well. The sandwiches are huge, saved half for today and it was still delicious. My husband saved half his too. Parking is plenty. Bar is really small, but hey that's ok. She wiped our table down and sat us at one of two empty tables and took our drink orders. Drinks came out very promptly! We sat for about 5-10 mins before our waiter came up and took our order. We ordered the pretzels with cheese for an app and they came out fast and hot and were absolutely delish. I think they make the cheese sauce in house cause it was def not canned nacho cheese that you usually get with those things. We also ordered burgers, and though I can't remember which ones we got, they were both really good and the house made fries were EXCELLENT. I noticed other reviews talking about the regulars at the bar, and yes, there are obviously a lot of regulars, but we were not treated any differently then they were. Worst service ever!!!!! 23 Min just to get a beer!!! The "other table" got served 3 times by the same server working with us while we waited for our first round. We never saw a menu, as we were going to try something to eat, asked for bill and after waiting 15 more minuets ended up leaving some cash on the table and walking out. Person said yes as long as dog was a service dog. We arrived, ordered food and drink only to be met w/ manager who asked for our papers on the dog certifying he was a service dog. We do not carry the papers w/ us, nor did we have the dogs jacket that day. "Manager" said the dog was not allowed on the patio w/o us producing papers. 1: Very unprofessional of "manager". 2: Is it even legal to ask for proof of service animal? 3. Have not been back since. 4. Will NOT go back. Even if legal to ask for service animal documentation. read more

My boyfriend, my dog, and I came to eat on the patio. When we sat out there for 20 minutes without anyone coming out to help us I decided to go in. When I told the tall heavyset lady with the brown curly hair at the bar, she looked at me like I was an idiot and very rudely told me dogs weren't allowed on the property regardless if it was my therapy dog or not. I'm not sure if she just thought that therapy dog was a made up thing but if so, that's pretty ignorant. I have high anxiety and my dog makes it so I can actually go out in public without panicking. There's no need to try to make me feel dumb in front of all of her other customers that were all sitting there listening.
